Using a xenotransplantation system in which immortalized nontumorigenic human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B cells) are grown in deepithelialized rat tracheas that are subcutaneously transplanted into athymic nude mice, we exposed BEAS-2B cells either to cigarette smoke condensate or to the tobacco-specific N-nitrosamine 4-(methylnitrosamine)-1- (3-pyridyl)-1-butanone. After 6 mo the carcinogen-exposed BEAS-2B cells were neoplastically transformed to invasive adenocarcinomas. Cell lines obtained from xenografts exposed in vivo to chemicals exhibited several features typical of malignant lung cancer cells, such as increased in vivo invasiveness that correlated well with enhanced type IV collagenolytic activity, resistance to serum-induced growth inhibition, and increased expression of transforming growth factor ? and its cellular-membrane receptor. Invasiveness, similar to that seen after exposure to phorbol esters, was also detected after in vitro exposure of BEAS-2B cells to cigarette ...

VILIP-1 (visinin-like protein 1) is downregulated in various human squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). In a mouse skin SCC model VILIP-1 expression is reduced in aggressive tumor cells, accompanied by reduced cAMP levels. Overexpression of VILIP-1 in aggressive SCC cells led to enhanced cAMP production, in turn causing a reduction in invasive properties. Moreover, in primary neurons and neuronal tumor lines VILIP-1 enhanced cGMP signaling. Here, we set out to determine whether and how cAMP and cGMP signaling contribute to the VILIP-1 effect on enhanced SCC model cell migration, and thus most likely invasiveness in vivo. We found stronger increase in cGMP levels in aggressive, VILIP-1-negative SCC cells following stimulation of guanylyl cyclases NPR-A and -B with the natriuretic peptides ANP and CNP, respectively. Incubation with ANP or 8Br-cGMP to increase cGMP levels further enhanced the migration capacity of aggressive cells, whereas cell adhesion was unaffected. Increased cGMP was caused by ...

The use and killing of dogs by medical students and shelter workers in the United States provides insight into the experience of veterinary students who sometimes face similar situations. Although ostensibly two very different kinds of settings, there are features of the medical school and animal shelter experiences that, when combined, likely approximate what veterinary students contend with when they face terminal surgeries or labs that use dogs. Like veterinary education, medical education often includes the use and destruction of dogs as learning tools. A major difference, however, is that medical students are seeking to improve the health and welfare of humans rather than animals. Over half of American medical schools use living dogs to illustrate basic physiology principles, after which the dogs are killed. Pressure has mounted in recent years for medical schools to discontinue the use of dogs as teaching tools. To date, approximately one third of all American medical schools have ...

Should manufacturers be held to a higher standard than those which have been proven to be ineffective?. The following paper is an interesting read related to that topic. . .. The Case for a Strong Regulatory Compliance Defense. Richard C. Ausness, University of Kentucky, College of Law, 1996, Law Faculty Publications. Here are some excerpts:. The regulatory compliance defense is another concept that can limit tort liability. In its strong version, the regulatory compliance defense provides that a product is not defective if it meets applicable regulatory standards or requirements. However, very few jurisdictions recognize regulatory compliance as a complete defense to tort liability. Instead, most courts allow juries to take compliance with regulatory standards into account, but steadfastly refuse to treat federal safety standards as anything more than minimum standards. 12″ [p. 1212]. When I discussed a cloud options for PLM yesterday in my article, I mentioned that a very significant opportunity comes in ability to share and collaborate on the product related content (drawings, models, bills) when using cloud models. This option comes as a pathway for those companies and people that have a concern to store overall product IP on cloud storage.. So, latest feature introduced by Google Docs- Shared Folders is the best example of cloud based technology to implement collaboration approach. Actually, I think PLM vendors need to take a very careful look on such capabilities of Google Docs. I do see an option when many of the smaller customers will be able to use Share Folders in their current configuration to facilitate document exchange and collaboration with suppliers and across the enterprise.. ...
This Office product will reach end of support on October 10, 2017. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see , Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.. Topic Last Modified: 2016-11-14. The 2007 Microsoft Office system is available in many languages. In an international setting, you can deploy multiple language versions of Office in a single installation process. Setup combines a language-neutral core product with one or more language-specific packages to create a complete product. On the source media, language-specific packages are organized into separate folders. Each folder name has a language tag appended to it, in the form ll-cc, that identifies the language and culture. For example, U.S. English language folders are identified by the folder name extension en-us. The language tags help you identify the folders you need to copy to your network installation point.. The language folders included in a fully localized version of a 2007 ...
