This study is the first of 5 studies (including DMID protocols 05-0081, 05-0082, 05-0117, and 06-0081) in a larger project aimed at evaluating the epidemiology of infections caused by the group A streptococcus (GAS) in Fiji - this larger project is called the Fiji Group A Streptococcal Project (Fiji GrASP). Fiji GrASP is in turn part of a larger program aimed at progression of a novel GAS vaccine - this program is the project entitled Global GAS Vaccine Based On The M-Protein. The three broad aims of the Fiji GrASP epidemiologic studies are to: establish the burden of disease of GAS infections in Fiji; describe the molecular epidemiology of GAS isolates in Fiji; and establish natural immunologic correlates of protection of a J8 vaccine if they exist. The Fiji GrASP epidemiologic studies are important for vaccine clinical trials in that they will gain a clear picture of the burden of GAS disease, develop ongoing surveillance and clinical endpoints for vaccine trials, collect isolates of GAS in ...
THE HIV epidemic in Fiji is not expanding through sex workers, the Integrated Behavioural and Biological Survey (IBBS) and Size Estimation of Sex Workers in Fiji: HIV Prevention Project report revealed.. The report, launched yesterday by the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, was the first large-scale quantitative research on sex workers in Fiji which aims to help understand the nature of sex work in Fiji, rates of HIV and STI infection among the sex worker community and their knowledge and behaviour around safer sex practices.. A total of 298 sex workers participated in the IBBS survey with 297 valid surveys for the behavioural survey and 293 valid biological samples for the biological component. This represented just 38 per cent of the total estimated sex worker population in Fiji.. "Just three positive cases of HIV were found suggesting sex workers are not experiencing a concentrated epidemic and that the HIV epidemic in Fiji is not expanding through sex workers," the report stated.. Nadi, the ...
Fijilive is an online newspaper and business and cultural directory in Fiji. The site is owned by the Future Group of Companies owned by Fiji entrepreneur Yashwant Gaunder. Fijilive is one of Fijis largest websites. The site rose to prominence in May 2000 during the nationalist coup orchestrated by George Speight. While communication links with the outside world were cut off by the coup plotters, Fijilive was one of the few sources of news to reach the international audience. Since 2003 the site has undergone a massive transformation with a focus on infotainment. However, it still remains a major suppler of Fiji news for an international audience. The Universal Periodic Review of Fiji comes at an important point in Fijis history. In 2014, the country held its first general elections in nearly eight years, resulting in the election of a new government of the Fiji First Party, headed by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama. Human rights concerns that persist in Fiji include severe restrictions on media freedom, clampdowns on workers rights, and torture and ill-treatment in detention.. During the UPR session, member states called for the abolishment of decrees restricting media freedom. In response to questions regarding the Media Industry Development Decree (the "Media Decree"), we deeply regret that Fiji refused to accept recommendations in this regard and simply refused to acknowledge concerns that the framework restricts the right to freedom of expression and encourages censorship.. The Media Decree imposes severe penalties on any publication deemed threatening to "public interest or order," and those convicted under the decree are ...
In a dramatic, enthralling semifinal, fans flocked to see the two favourite teams at this tournament. They did not disappoint.. New Zealand had their chances but panicked under pressure with dropped balls and forward passes when breakouts from their own line threatened proving costly, going down 14-12.. Clark Laidlaws side will now contest third place.. Vilimoni Koroi did everything he could to send New Zealand into the final, scoring one solo try and saving another will a brilliant cover tackle. Losing the influential playmaker with two minutes left to an arm injury was a major blow but Fiji deserved their victory.. The crowd traded chants of "All Blacks" and "Fiji" in an electric atmosphere but it was the Fijians, after leading 7-5 at the break, who held their nerve down the stretch.. Earlier New Zealand progressed to the semi after downing England 19-12 in a tense match, while Fiji snuck past Gordon Tietjens Samoa thanks to a last minute try.. Fiji meet South Africa, both teams unbeaten in ...
Fiji TV is the leading television broadcaster in Fiji and the Pacific region, operating the most-watched free-to-air TV stations in Fiji and PNG - Fiji One and EMTV respectively - and also SKY Pacific, the Pacifics premium DTH (Direct to Home) satellite pay TV service that was launched in 2005 to broadcast an array of channels to island countries across the Pacific.
The conservation status of this endemic gastropod is unknown. It is not included in the ESP Act (2002) or the IUCN Redlist of Threatened Species or the CITES Appendices. There is relatively little known of its ecology highlighting the urgent need for research.. Fiji freshwater invertebrate populations are particularly threatened by the fact that there are very few taxonomists available in Fiji to identify and study them. Dr. Alison Haynes, arguably Fiji’s only expert on freshwater snails has written a guide to the Freshwater Snails of the Tropical Pacific Islands, but this is not enough to ensure the survival and conservation of Fiji’s snails, particularly those that are vulnerable to the on-going changes in river systems. Deforestation, gravel dredging and the lack of experts on our freshwater invertebrates could easily see the extinction of our endemic and native species without having been documented or studied. ...
Police and Australian authorities have intercepted a consignment of methamphetamine worth more than $6.5 million.. The consignment was initially intercepted at the Los Angeles Airport last week on its way to Fiji after custom officials were suspicious of the country of origin on the packaging label.. 20 packages were found in the consignment containing a pressure cooker and further testing confirmed contents to be methamphetamines weighing over 21 kilograms.. Fiji Police along with the Australian Federal Police then allowed for the consignment to be sent through to Fiji to determine the recipient here.. When the package arrived in Fiji, it was received by two men aged 31 and 35 years.. The package was seized from them by a surveillance team of police and customs officers.. The 31 year old has been charged with Unlawful Transfer and Supply of Illicit Drugs and will be produced at the Nadi Magistrates Court today while the second suspect remains in custody.. This is the second large seizure of ...

It then transitions to show athletes refueling with the brands new water sports cap bottle after sprinting through a wildly contrasting urban landscape. The surroundings may be different, but the pureness of FIJI Water remains the same.|/p| |p|Gregorys vast knowledge and skills in visual effects, combined with his creative vision and unique perspective, made him the perfect director for the spots, as it was essential to seamlessly depict the raindrops fast-paced journey through the different environments. MPC was tasked with building the CG water droplet that falls from the sky, reflecting and magnifying the beauty of the scenes shot in Fiji. Gregory explains the strategic process behind the shoot:
Fiji has two species of endemic frog, the ground frog Platymantis vitianus and the tree frog P. vitiensis. The ground frog, P. vitianus is the rarer of the two species and is listed as Endangered (EN B1 + 2c) under current IUCN (2002) criteria. Platymantis vitianus has been recorded from the mainland of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu and the smaller islands of Taveuni, Ovalau, Beqa, Kadavu, Gau, and Viwa in eastern Fiji. Recent severe population declines (believed to be correlated with mongoose, rat and cane toad distributions), have resulted in potential extirpation from the mainland and several other islands and today populations are only known from five islands Taveuni, Kadavu, Ovalau, Gau and Viwa.. The limited ecological data available suggests that P. vitianus lays ,50 eggs in moist situations under rotted wood on the ground or within rotted logs. The eggs are large (4-7mm diameter) and there is no tadpole stage. Little else is known about its ecology.. The distribution of Platymantis vitiensis ...

The south Pacific iguanas (Brachylophus) currently have three recognized living species in Fiji. Recent surveys have uncovered more specific variation (morphological and genetic) within the genus and have better defined the geographic ranges of the named species. One of these recent discoveries is a strikingly different iguana from all other island populations in Fiji which is restricted to Gau Island of the Lomaiviti Province. Gau is the fifth largest island in Fiji and maintains excellent upland forests in the higher elevations. We describe this population from Gau Island as a new species, Brachylophus gau sp. nov., in recognition of its type locality....
SUVA, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1141 cases involving child neglect, sexual and physical abuse of children, child labour, and teenage pregnancy were recorded by the Child Services Unit in the last 10 months in Fiji.. Child Services Unit Assistant Director Ela Tukutukulevu said Friday out of the 1141 cases, 616 are females and 525 are males and that child neglect still tops the list, Fiji Broadcasting Corporations news website reported on Friday.. "So we continue to receive cases from January, now that we have come to the end of the year, the cases are received through the referrals of our partners especially the Fiji Police Force, Ministry of Education and also our medical officers and other agencies that refer the cases to us.". Tukutukulevu said 280 cases involved children between the ages of 16 to 18 and 273 cases involved children from 0-5 years old.. She said failure to report child cases is a crime and those convicted are liable to pay a fine of 5000 Fijian dollars (about 2307 U.S. ...
Seeking to go beyond global best practices in reducing environmental impacts, FIJI Water, a premium artesian bottled water company in the United States, launched a Carbon Negative campaign that would offset more greenhouse gas emissions than were released by the companys operations and products. The case examines the controversies surrounding this program as well as the programs impacts on the environment and FIJI Waters brand image. The company also faced decisions regarding how to best manage its relationship with the Fijian government, which recently dramatically raised imposed export taxes and could limit FIJI Waters access to water, its primary raw material. The case enables students to better understand the challenges of implementing an environmental strategy and of negotiating with parties that control raw materials, and invites discussion of the effectiveness of various approaches and the general lessons for the management of companies seeking to operate in an environmentally responsible
Masculinity, Gender Identity, and Fijis GLBT Community. Carlos and I have volunteered with the AIDS Task Force of Fiji (ATFF) since its inception in 1994, and we started volunteering with the Sexual Minorities Project (SMP) when it was first established under the auspices of the non-government organisation Womens Action for Change in 1998. Carlos became the coordinator of SMP, soon to be called Equal Ground Pasifik, in 2002. I have served on the SMP Core Group since 1998, and I started working for the ATFF two years ago. SMP and ATFF currently share office space in downtown Suva, Fiji.. SMP is the only organisation in the Pacific region (excluding Australia and New Zealand) working in behalf, and defending the rights, of GLBT people. SMPs core work involves battling homophobia, advocating the rights of GLBT people, providing support for this community, and upgrading the skills of GLBT people, and enhancing their self-esteem. The ATFF also works with vulnerable groups including sex workers, ...
The rural population of Fiji has little to no access to healthcare, sanitation or clean water. They are left off the brochures and fancy websites. They live a hard life, and the common necessities that make life easier are incredibly expensive; namely soap. Soap is too expensive for the rural population of Fiji to purchase, so they simply dont. And because they dont have common hygiene practices put in place, scabies has taken over all of the smaller rural islands within the entire nation.. Scabies is a burrowing mite that we would consider an annoyance; we would simply obtain antibiotics and clean ourselves with soap. The Fiji population cannot do this, therefore it has run rampant throughout each village, community and island. The main concern with scabies is that when it isnt treated, it can lead to active impetigo lesions, which will eventually produce toxins in the body. This is happening right now, as you read this…especially to babies and young children. Once the toxins have been ...

Just reading the comments from the hard nosed/racist kaivitis on this website make me shudder at the audacity and the hatred being spewed in the name of democracy. Anonymity it seems brings out the true colors in people. I have known this for a very long time that no matter how much a person of Indian decent does for the natives of this country they will always be outcasts. We can wipe your ass and feed you for the rest of your lazy lives and we will still be hated just for being Indian. Sadly this is taught to children in i-taukei homes as Rabuka disclosed in his speech at USP. I will give you an example of the average Fiji Indian. I am a 3rd generation Fiji Indian. I was born into the Muslim faith but do not practice any religion. I own a business which employes 22 people about 12 of them are i-taukei. I contribute about $1m to governments coffers every year in various payments ranging from VAT duty and Tax. I have not benefited in any way from this government and in fact i tried to get an ...
Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). The coups and a 1990 constitution that cemented native Melanesian control of Fiji, led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. A new constitution enacted in 1997 was more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a civilian-led coup in May 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil. Parliamentary elections held in August 2001 provided Fiji with a democratically elected government led by Prime Minister Laisenia QARASE. Re-elected in May 2006, QARASE was ousted in a December 2006 military coup led by Commodore Voreqe ...

Bainimarama mounted a counter-response, one that has become a permanent feature of Fijis international stance. Fiji joined the Non-Aligned Movement and extended its diplomatic reach, setting up new embassies in South Africa, Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. At the UN, Fiji made the Pacific Small Islands Developing States group (eleven Pacific countries) an effective grouping, and in 2013 was chair of the G77, the UN grouping of 134 developing countries. Fiji grew notably closer to China, sending military officers to Beijing for training, accepting a significant amount of Chinese aid and welcoming investment in Fiji mining by Chinese companies. Fiji rolled out the red carpet for Xi Jinping when he visited Fiji in 2014, and Fiji soldiers participated in Chinas V-Day parade in 2015 ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - In vitro rearing of Perkinsiella saccharicida and the use of leaf segments to assay Fiji disease virus transmission. AU - Hughes, G. L.. AU - Allsopp, P. G.. AU - Brumbley, S. M.. AU - Johnson, K. N.. AU - O'Neill, S. L.. PY - 2008/7. Y1 - 2008/7. N2 - Fiji leaf gall (FLG) is caused by the Reovirus, Fiji disease virus (FDV), which is transmitted to sugarcane by planthoppers of the genus Perkinsiella. Low vector transmission rates and slow disease symptom development make experimentation within the FDV-Perkinsiella-sugarcane system inherently difficult. A laboratory-based technique was devised to rear the vector using sugarcane leaves as a food source. Planthoppers were reared on sugarcane leaf segments embedded in agarose enclosed within plastic containers. To provide a nondestructive assay for determination of the inoculation potential of planthoppers, FDV was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in newly infected sugarcane leaf segments ...

I dont drink FIJI Water, though Im sure its tasty. Since recently I dont drink any bottled water, actually, but thats a different story (though not entirely). But if I was a long-time consumer of FIJI Water, I can see that the emotional investment that I had made would make me more likely to dismiss claims such as Lenzers, until I saw solid proof. (By emotional investment I mean the fact that while drinking it regularly, I would expect that doing so wouldnt cause all sorts of calamities in another country, for example, and if I then had to admit to myself that I had been wrong all that time, then I would be emotionally upset - we dont like when that happens.) On the other hand, now that I dont drink it, I dont really have anything at stake, and I dont have to face the fact that I am part of the problem (that FIJI Water causes disease, climate change and other human and environmental tragedy ...

Companies that bottle and sell water make all kinds of claims about the health benefits of drinking their products. A couple of great examples are Fiji Water, from the Fiji Islands, and Evian, which hails from France.. From SF Gate.com: The Web site for Fiji Water (fijiwater.com) says the water is drawn from an artesian aquifer, located at the very edge of a primitive rainforest, hundreds of miles away from the nearest continent. That distance, it adds, is part of what makes us so much more pure and so much healthier than other bottled waters. Grace Jeon, Fiji Waters vice president of marketing, said Fiji Water has a naturally high level of silica, which she said helps strengthen your hair, skin and nails.. David Schardt, senior nutritionist at Washingtons Center for Science in the Public Interest, said it appears that Fiji Water is taking liberties with the purported health benefits of silica. Suva, Fiji - Photo by Anna Lenzer. The bus dropped me off at a deserted intersection, where a weather-beaten sign warning off would-be trespassers in English, Fijian, and Hindi rattled in the tropical wind. Once I reached the plant, the bucolic quiet gave way to the hum of machinery spitting out some 50,000 square bottles (made on the spot with plastic imported from China) per hour. The production process spreads across two factory floors, blowing, filling, capping, labeling, and shrink-wrapping 24 hours a day, five days a week. The company wont disclose its total sales; Fiji Waters vice president of corporate communications told me the estimate of 180 million bottles sold in 2006, given in a legal declaration by his boss, was wrong, but declined to provide a more solid number.. From here, the bottles are shipped to the four corners of the globe; the company-which, unlike most of its competitors, offers detailed carbon-footprint estimates on its website-insists that they travel on ships that ...

Bainimarama contradictions Speakers comments that women sometimes deserve it. By Tevita Vuibau. SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, May 26, 2016) - Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has rejected Speaker Dr Jiko Luvenis views that wives who aggravate their husbands are partially to blame for domestic violence.. He made the comments in Istanbul, Turkey, at the World Humanitarian Summit Leaders Roundtable on Women and Girls.. And while not mentioning Dr Luveni directly, Mr Bainimarama did make comments that were in stark contrast to those made by the Speaker last week.. Mr Bainimarama said his attitude and that of his Government was one of zero tolerance for violence against women.. "I simply do not accept the argument that the onus is on a woman not to provoke her partners temper. And that if she does so, that somehow justifies or excuses the treatment that is meted out to her," Mr Bainimarama said.. "It is a way of thinking that provides men with an excuse to justify the unjustifiable and women to accept ...
