BURBANO, R.R. et al. Cytogenetic description of breast fibroadenomas: alterations related solely to proliferation?. Braz J Med Biol Res [online]. 2001, vol.34, n.8, pp.1003-1006. ISSN 1414-431X. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0100-879X2001000800005.. Twelve breast fibroadenomas were analyzed cytogenetically and only four were found to have clonal alterations. The presence of chromosomal alterations in fibroadenomas must be the consequence of the proliferating process and must not be related to the etiology of this type of lesion. In contrast, the few fibroadenomas that exhibit chromosomal alterations are likely to be those presenting a risk of neoplastic transformation. Clonal numerical alterations involved chromosomes 8, 18, 19, and 21. Of the chromosomal alterations found in the present study, only monosomy of chromosomes 19 and 21 has been reported in breast fibroadenomas. The loss of chromosome 21 was the most frequent alteration found in our sample. The study of benign proliferations and their ...
Fibroadenomas, are benign breast tumours characterized by an admixture of stromal and epithelial tissue. Breasts are made of lobules (milk producing glands) and ducts (tubes that carry the milk to the nipple). These are surrounded by glandular, fibrous and fatty tissues. Fibroadenomas develop from the lobules. The glandular tissue and ducts grow over the lobule to form a solid lump. Since both fibroadenomas, and breast lumps as a sign of breast cancer can appear similar, it is recommended to perform ultrasound analyses and possibly tissue sampling with subsequent histopathologic analysis in order to make a proper diagnosis. Unlike typical lumps from breast cancer, fibroadenomas are easy to move, with clearly defined edges. Fibroadenomas are sometimes called breast mice or a breast mouse owing to their high mobility in the breast. The typical case is the presence of a painless, firm, solitary, mobile, slowly growing lump in the breast of a woman of child-bearing years. In the male breast, ...
I used the EchoPulse to treat 11 patients during a clinical trial at the American Hospital of Paris from January to October 2012. The results from this technique are encouraging with a 60% volume reduction of fibroadenoma in an average period of 6 months. EchoPulse could represent an interesting alternative to classical surgery adds Dr Marc Abehsera from the medical imaging service at the American Hospital of Paris.. A clinical trial on 40 patients has shown the efficiency and the excellent tolerance of echotherapy for this type of pathology. To this day, 48 fibroadenomas have been treated in 3 French centers (Lille Jeanne de Flandres Hospital, the Valenciennes Hospital and the American Hospital of Paris) and one center in Bulgaria (the University Hospital of Sofia), with significant volume reductions accompanied by the resolution of symptoms. ...

Mammary-like anogenital fibroadenomas are rare entities within the wide spectrum of female genital pathology. Our paper provides an up-to-date review, by systematization of the concepts and controversies, from the origin to the development and the diagnosis of the lesion. The theories pertaining to its histogenesis incorporate its debated origin of ectopic mammary-derived lesions, of cutaneous apocrine, eccrine, sebaceous, and mammary-like anogenital glands. Although rare, both clinicians and pathologists should consider this lesion type within the differential diagnosis of anogenital pathology, regardless of the womans age, and pathological confirmation is mandatory to exclude the possibility of other tumours, including malignancy. Immunohistochemistry may represent a useful tool in tumor characterisation and in differential diagnosis.

Professor, 4Assosciate professor, Dept. of Pathology, Malla Reddy Institute of Medical Sciences, Suraram, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.. Abstract:. Fibroadenomas are the most common benign breast tumors in young women. Infarction is rarely observed in fibroadenomas and when present, it is usually associated with pregnancy or lactation. Spontaneous infarction is an uncommon complication of fibro adenoma of the breast. Although infarction following fine needle aspiration (FNA) has been reported in the literature, infarction encountering on first time aspiration is very rare. Lack of knowledge of this entity may lead to a false diagnosis of inflammatory lesion like mastitis and carcinoma on cytology smears. In young patients with breast lumps, if the aspirated material is necrotic, the probable diagnosis of spontaneous infarction should always be kept in mind. Viable ...
Fibroadenomas are smooth, well-rounded solid lumps of tissue that sometimes develop outside the milk ducts (the tiny tubes in the breast that carry milk). They are particularly common in young women.. They are sometimes described as breast mice because they can easily move around within the breast.. Fibroadenomas can disappear on their own, but they sometimes remain and grow larger, particularly during pregnancy. They dont usually resolve after your period.. Its not clear what causes fibroadenomas, but it is thought they may occur because of an abnormal response to the hormone oestrogen. This is because they are common in women who havent been through the menopause and postmenopausal women who are having hormone replacement therapy (HRT).. ...

Some are fibroadenomas (a fibroadenoma is also called a breast mouse). These are firm breast lumps made up of fibrous and glandular tissue. Fibroadenomas are more common in younger women and may become tender in the days before a menstrual period, or grow bigger during pregnancy. They dont necessarily need treatment, especially if a needle biopsy shows them to be benign (more on biopsies later) although they can be surgically removed if theyre large ...

Nithiazide was tested for carcinogenicity in one experiment in mice and in one experiment in rats by administration in the diet. It increased the incidence of hepatocellular carcinomas and adenomas in male mice. In female rats, it increased the incidences of fibroadenomas and cystadenomas of the skin, subcutaneous tissue and mammary gland (significant only if individual incidences for each site were combined) and the incidence of endometrial stromal polyps of the uterus.. No data were available to assess the mutagenic or teratogenic effects of nithiazide in experimental systems. ...
Although breast phyllodes tumors are rare, there is no effective therapy other than surgery. Little is known about their tumor biology. A malignant phyllodes tumor contains heterologous stromal elements, and can transform into rhabdomyosarcoma, liposarcoma and osteosarcoma. These versatile properties prompted us to explore their possible relationship to mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and to search for the presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in phyllodes tumors. Paraffin sections of malignant phyllodes tumors were examined for various markers by immunohistochemical staining. Xenografts of human primary phyllodes tumors were established by injecting freshly isolated tumor cells into the mammary fat pad of non-obese diabetic-severe combined immunodeficient (NOD-SCID) mice. To search for CSCs, xenografted tumor cells were sorted into various subpopulations by flow cytometry and examined for their in vitro mammosphere forming capacity, in vivo tumorigenicity in NOD-SCID mice and their ability to undergo
Fibroadenomas are the commonest benign breast tumours. Prior to vacuum-assisted large-volume biopsy, surgical excision was the only therapeutic option available. Our unit introduced Mammotome (Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Cincinnati, OH, USA) in January 2006, with Mammotome excision offered from September 2006 (for lesions 25 mm or less). We reviewed the change in practice with the advent of Mammotome.. Patients with histological diagnosis of fibroadenoma throughout 2006 and 2007 were identified. The radiology and histology were reviewed.. A total of 355 fibroadenomas were diagnosed in 333 patients: 252 presented symptomatically, 81 were screen-detected.. Thirty-five diagnostic Mammotomes were performed (33 had been nondiagnostic on needle-core biopsy, two had radiology/pathology discordance). Definitive diagnosis was consequently made in 34 cases. One patient with nondiagnostic Mammotome had subsequent surgical biopsy of benign fibroadenoma.. Seventy patients underwent excision. Fifteen were ...
Lumps in a woman are often caused by fibrocystic changes, fibroadenomas, and cysts.. Fibrocystic changes can occur in either or both breasts. These changes occur in many women (especially during the reproductive years) and are considered a normal variation of breast tissue. Having fibrocystic breasts does not increase your risk for breast cancer. It does, however, make it more difficult to interpret lumps that you or your doctor find on exam. Many women feel tenderness in addition to the lumps and bumps associated with fibrocystic breasts.. Fibroadenomas are non-cancerous lumps that feel rubbery and are easily moveable within the breast tissue. Like fibrocystic changes, they occur most often during the reproductive years. Usually, they are not tender and, except in rare cases, do not become cancerous later. A doctor may feel fairly certain from an exam that a particular lump is a fibroadenoma. The only way to be sure, however, is to remove or biopsy them.. Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that often ...

Objective: To study expressions of matrix metalloproteinase-13 (PCNA) in triple negative (ER-, PR-, HER2-) breast cancers and evaluate their clinical significance.. Methods: The immunohistochemistry SP method was used to evaluate the expressions of PCNA in 32 cases of triple negative breast cancers, 24 cases of HR breast cancer (ER+/PR+, HER-2-), 12 cases of HER2 breast cancer (ER-, PR-, HER2+) and 12 cases of breast fibroadenoma and their correlations to clinicopathologic features were analyzed.. Results: The expressions of PCNA were significantly higher in the triple negative breast cancers than in breast fibroadenoma and HR breast cancers (P,0.05). Furthermore, the expression of PCNA was significantly higher in the triple negative breast cancers than in HER2 breast cancers (P ,0.05). In the triple negative breast cancers, PCNA expression was associated with axillary lymph node metastasis and TNM stage (P ,0.05), but it was not correlated with patients age (P ,0.05). Phyllodes tumors are lumps in the breast made of glandular and connective tissue. The main characteristic of phyllodes tumors is an overgrowth of connective tissue. The tumor can often be felt upon breast examination and may or may not be painful. Phyllodes tumors are usually benign but occasionally may be identified as potentially malignant. They can appear at any age but are most commonly found in women in their 30s or 40s.. ...

RESULTS: Blood LPO level was similar in breast cancer patients and benign tumour patients (2.01±0.46 nmol/ml vs. 1.92±0.39 nmol/ml, respectively; p>0.05). In cancer patients, MDA+4-HDA increased on the first postoperative day, i.e. from 2.01±0.46 nmol/ml to 2.58±0.98 nmol/ml (p=0.0001). In women with benign breast tumour, LPO did not relate to the histological finding (p=0.8915). In the breast cancer group, preoperative LPO did not correlate with age, tumour volume and number of metastatic lymph nodes. Level of MDA+4-HDA was similar in stages I/II (2.03±0.46 nmol/ml) compared to stages III/IV (1.69±0.26 nmol/ml, p=0.1521). Consequently, levels of MDA+4-HDA did not relate to disease stage (p=0.1364 ...
I went to Joys office and we started chatting. She started scanning and while doing mentioned that shed had a scare in January and that she had a lump removed. When she found the lump, it was obvious. It was dark, ominous, and irregular. She mentioned if it were her, she would just have it taken out. And, looking back in retrospect, this is about the time that she became less chatty and more focused on her work. I looked at the screen (now granted Im not the average patient) and said, Huh, what percentage of the time do fibroadenomas have irregular borders? to which she replied plainly, They dont ...

Early-stage primary breast tumors are treated surgically. The selection of lumpectomy, modified radical mastectomy, or another approach is balanced against the patients desire for breast conservation, the need for tumor-free margins in resected tissue, and the patients age, hormone receptor status, and other factors. Adjuvant radiation therapy decreases local recurrences, particularly for those who select lumpectomy. Adjuvant hormonal therapy and/or chemotherapy are added, depending on presence and number of involved nodes, hormone receptor status, and other factors. Treatment of metastatic disease includes surgery to remove the primary lesion and combination chemotherapy. Fibroadenomas are common, benign tumors of the breast that can either present as a palpable mass or a mammographic abnormality. These benign tumors have been frequently surgically excised to rule out a malignancy ...
PT is a rare disease that is classified into benign, borderline, and high grade malignant tumors. The distinction among these three subgroups is based on the combination of histological characteristics of the tumors and also it is predictive of the probable clinical course (4).. The epithelial component of PT may show changes ranging from hyperplasia to invasive carcinoma. Sawyer et al. showed hyperplasia in the epithelial component of PT in 60%, and a moderate to strong overexpression of cyclin D1 in 46% of cases (5). Cyclin D1 is frequently overexpressed in breast cancer and DCIS (6, 7) but not in atypical ductal hyperplasia and other benign breast diseases. So it was unexpected to find such expression in the epithelium of benign tumors (8, 9).. As it was mentioned before, the median age of occurrence of phyllodes tumor is 40 - 50 years, and also ductal carcinoma in situ arising in phyllodes tumor is a rare situation, so our patient aged 26 years old was one of the youngest cases of benign PT ...
Fibroadenomas can be expected to shrink naturally and so, most are simply monitored.[17] Monitoring fibroadenomas involves regular check-ups to make sure that the breast mass is not growing and is not potentially cancerous.[17] Check-ups involve physical examinations performed every 3-6 months and optional diagnostic imaging performed every 6-12 months for 1-2 years.[17] Generally, surgery is only recommended if the fibroadenoma gets larger or causes increased symptoms.[18] They are removed with a small margin of normal breast tissue if the preoperative clinical investigations are suggestive of the necessity of this procedure. A small amount of normal tissue must be removed in case the lesion turns out to be a phyllodes tumour on microscopic examination.[9][19]. Because needle biopsy is often a reliable diagnostic investigation, some doctors may decide not to operate to remove the lesion, and instead opt for clinical follow-up to observe the lesion over time using clinical examination and ...
To improve clinical breast imaging, a new ultrasound tomography imaging device (CURE) has been built at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. The ring array of the CURE device records ultrasound transmitted and reflected ultrasound signals simultaneously. We develop a bent-ray tomography algorithm for reconstructing the sound-speed distribution of the breast using time-of-flights of transmitted signals. We study the capability of the algorithm using a breast phantom dataset and over 190 patients data. Examples are presented to demonstrate the sound-speed reconstructions for different breast types from fatty to dense on the BI-RADS categories 1-4. Our reconstructions show that the mean sound-speed value increases from fatty to dense breasts: 1440.8 m/ s (fatty), 1451.9 m/ s (scattered), 1473.2 m/ s(heterogeneous), and 1505.25 m/ s (dense). This is an important clinical implication of our reconstruction. The mean sound speed can be used for breast density analysis. In addition, the sound-speed ...
Elastography is a method of imaging tissue stiffness. It is based on shear wave velocity information that can be mapped to create an image of the stiffness in the region of interest.. Sonoelastography is used to differentiate benign from malignant lesions since malignant lesions alter tissue elasticity.. Adding Shear Wave elastographic features to BI-RADS® feature analysis- especially in lesions scored BI-RADS® 3 and 4a- improved specificity of breast US mass assessment without loss of sensitivity.. The BI-RADS® categories are defined by the risk for a malignant lesion varying from benign BI-RADS® 2 lesions, up to a 2% malignancy rate in BI-RADS® 3 and 2- 95% in BI-RADS® 4 (4a 2-10%; 4b 10-50%; 4c 50-95%). Based on these probabilities, biopsies are recommended for BI-RADS® 4 and 5 lesions and short-term follow-up examinations for BI-RADS® 3. Consequently, up to 2% of the in Ultrasound visible breast cancers are not directly detected as such and put into the BI-RADS® 3 category. In ...

Fibrocystic change of the breast is a non-specific term referring to several types of benign breast conditions. These are non-proliferative lesions, which include cystic and fibrous tissue formation.
Academic & Research Achievements: Rao is the first one in the country to start `cancer biology course in a university system at MSc level as early as in 1976. He demonstrated that neutron and X- ray radiation differ considerably in eliciting mammary carcinogenesis by using 32P, 60Co and 45Ca radioisotopes, and camphor and gonadotropin. His group has revealed the genotoxic, carcinogenic, embryotoxic and immunotoxic actions of arecanuts unprocessed and ripened varieties. His findings at JNU have established the epidemiological claim that tobacco smoking and chewing habits synergistically enhance the risk of oral cancer. Hyperinsulinism maintained during the phase of initiation of DMBA-induced mammary carcinogenesis reduces the incidence, but during the phase of promotion would increase the incidence of the tumors. An inhibitory effect of caffeine on the incidence of benign mammary fibroadenoma and benign mammary cysts was reported. The chemopreventive efficacy of garlic, asparagus, mace and ...

Purpose: Currently, there are no molecular biomarkers for the early detection of breast cancer. This study focused on identifying surface proteins found on circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) for detecting early-stage breast cancer.. Experimental Design: Circulating EVs, isolated from the plasma of 10 patients with breast cancer (stages I and II) and 5 healthy controls, were analyzed using LC-MS/MS. Developmental endothelial locus-1 protein (Del-1) was selected as a candidate biomarker. Two different ELISAs were used to measure Del-1 in plasma samples from healthy controls (n = 81), patients with breast cancer (n = 269), breast cancer patients after surgical resection (n = 50), patients with benign breast tumors (n = 64), and patients with noncancerous diseases (n = 98) in two cohorts.. Results: Plasma Del-1 levels were significantly higher (P , 0.0001) in patients with breast cancer than in all controls and returned to almost normal after tumor removal. The diagnostic accuracy of Del-1 was ...
Results-On sonography, all fibroadenomas presented as masses. The mean size was 30 mm. Regarding shape, there were 29 oval, 2 round, and 3 irregular masses. The margins were circumscribed in 24, indistinct in 5, microlobulated in 4, and angular in 1. Regarding echogenicity, 16 masses were hypoechoic, 16 isoechoic, and 2 complex echoic. Posterior acoustic characteristics included posterior acoustic enhancement in 22 masses (65%), posterior shadowing in 1, and no posterior acoustic features in 9; this information was not available in 2. The lesion boundary presented as an abrupt interface in 32 and an echogenic halo in 2. The orientation was parallel in 32 and nonparallel in 2. Calcifications were present in 3 cases and absent in 31. On color Doppler sonography, the masses were usually hypervascular with vessel counts of 5 or more (87%). The BI-RADS final assessment categories were 3 in 24 and 4a in 10 ...

I am hoping that it is not a recurrent phyllodes tumor that chose to pop up on my spine because that is pretty scary. I know the chances of survival regarding a recurrent and spreading phyllodes, which this would be a metastisis since it is on my spine not the same breast. I know the chances of it being another low level malginant/benign Phyllodes or the more malignant ones. None of it is real encouraging or very good. But the only way to find out is to have it removed and biopsied since you cant tell a phyllodes from a non-cancerous tumor without a biopsy. (They very frequently come up with a false negative for cancer result on needle and core biopsies.) You would think that a doctor would tell their patient, specially one with my history, that an abnormal growth (aka tumor) has appeared on their spine ...

Hello ladies, I have one spot on my right breast that hurts when pressed. I noticed it more when I was turning over in bed the other day. I felt around for lumps and can t feel anything obvious. My husband also felt it and can t feel anything. I m not googling this time. Has anyone ever had this? Should I go to the docs? And the area that hurts is below the nipple. Right at the bottom. I m a 31 year old female btw.
Vibro-acoustography (VA) is a newly developed imaging technology that is based on low-frequency vibrations induced in the object by the radiation force of ultrasound. VA is sensitive to the dynamic characteristics of tissue. Here, we evaluate the performance of VA in identifying benign lesions and compare the results to those of mammography. An integrated mammography-VA system designed for in vivo breast imaging was tested on a group of female volunteers, age ≥ 18 years, with suspected breast lesions based on clinical examination. A set of VA scans was acquired after each corresponding mammography. Most lesions were classified as benign based on their histological results. However, in 4 cases, initial diagnosis based on clinical imaging determined that the lesions were cysts. These cysts were aspirated with needle aspiration and disappeared completely under direct ultrasound visualization. Therefore, no biopsies were performed on these cases and lesions were classified as benign based on clinical
Benign (non-cancerous) diseases of the breast are common throughout a womans life. All new breast symptoms require a full assessment and often a biopsy is required to confirm the diagnosis. Probably the most worrying symptom is a breast lump and the cause of a benign lump often depends on the age of the woman. Young women are susceptible to a type of lump called a fibroadenoma often seen in the late teens/ early twenties. They are made up of a combination of connective tissue and active breast tissue (epithelium) and are completely benign. They can be removed or left alone once diagnosed.. Very rarely, the lump is a phyllodes tumour in which the connective tissue is found to be abnormal. The majority of phyllodes tumours are benign but they can be borderline or completely malignant. Phyllodes tumours are usually found in older women and tend to grow rapidly and need to be removed with a cuff of normal tissue to reduce the risk of them returning. Women who have phyllodes tumours removed are seen ...

Rats administered doses up to 43 mg/kg/day in males and 52 mg/kg/day in females had no increases in tumor incidence, with the exception of a modest increase in the frequency of mammary gland fibroadenomas in female rats receiving doses ≥5.4 mg/kg (P,0.015). The highest doses of tamsulosin hydrochloride evaluated in the rat carcinogenicity study produced systemic exposures (AUC) in rats 3 times the exposures in men receiving the maximum therapeutic dose of 0.8 mg/day.. Mice were administered doses up to 127 mg/kg/day in males and 158 mg/kg/day in females. There were no significant tumor findings in male mice. Female mice treated for 2 years with the two highest doses of 45 and 158 mg/kg/day had statistically significant increases in the incidence of mammary gland fibroadenomas (P,0.0001) and adenocarcinomas (P,0.0075). The highest dose levels of tamsulosin hydrochloride evaluated in the mice carcinogenicity study produced systemic exposures (AUC) in mice 8 times the exposures in men receiving ...
Skin tags are harmless growths on the skin that can vary in number. They are usually the same color as your skin or slightly darker. These tiny pieces of tissue are composed of blood vessels and a type of protein fiber called collagen. They project from the surrounding skin on a thin or thick stalk. While most skin tags are small, pinhead-sized bumps, they may become as large as a grape Skin tags can develop on any part of the body, but they most commonly grow on areas of high friction or areas that are commonly rubbed, such as, neck, breasts, groin, stomach, eyelids, underarms. Males and females are equally prone to getting skin tags. However, people may be more likely to develop skin tags if they are obese, are pregnant, or have diabetes Causes--Researchers dont know exactly what causes skin tags to grow. It is believed that friction may lead to the development of skin tags. The growths commonly occur in areas where skin constantly rubs against clothing or other skin, such as near yo ...
The mammary glands, or breasts, are actually modified sebaceous glands (sweat) that are designed to secrete milk. On average, each breast weighs 200-300 g. They are composed of glandular tissue, fat, and supporting or stromal tissue. Each breast is organized into 12-25 triangular shaped lobes. Each lobe is composed of several smaller lobules. The breast lobules are linked by a collecting duct system which is responsible for the passage of milk. The spaces between the lobules are filled with fatty tissue. This intricate duct system terminates in the central portion of the breast, the areola or nipple area.. Pathologic (disease) changes may occur in any of the breast tissue. For example, the fat tissue in the breasts may actually necrose, or die, in response to trauma. Additionally, the stromal or support tissue of the breasts may give rise to fibrocystic changes, or benign solid tumors, called fibroadenomas. Breast cancer may also develop in any part of the breast.. Breast tissue responds to ...
Cystic epithelial-stromal tumors of the prostate are rare, with 82 cases reported in literature. These cases have been published under a variety of diagnoses, including phyllodes tumor and prostatic stromal proliferation of uncertain malignant potential as well as a malignant tumor called
Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease that includes numerous biological entities with specific pathological characteristics and variable biological behavior. In this study we intended to investigate the presence of telomerase activity in malignant and benign breast lesions. Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein complex. It contains three subunits: catalytic subunit of human telomerase reverse transcriptase, telomerase RNA subunit and protein subunit. Telomerase activity is present in various biological processes like aging, stem cell diseases and malignant growth. We analyzed telomerase activity in 102 breast carcinomas, 20 fibrocystic lesions, 20 fibroadenomas and 20 samples of normal beast tissue. Results obtained by TRAP assay (telomeric repeat amplification protocol) were correlated with various clinicopathologic parameters: patient age, size and histological grade of tumor, axillary lymph node status, steroid receptors, HER-2 status, Ki-67 analysis and Cathepsin D values. We also analyzed ...

Many breast lumps turn out to be caused by fibrosis and/or cysts, benign (non-cancer) changes in breast tissue that happen in many women at some time in their lives. Fibrosis is the formation of scar-like (fibrous) tissue, and cysts are fluid-filled sacs. These changes are sometimes called fibrocystic (fie-bro-SIS-tick) changes, and used to be calledfibrocystic disease. They are most often diagnosed by a doctor based on symptoms, such as breast lumps, swelling, and tenderness or pain. These symptoms tend to be worse just before a womans menstrual period is about to begin. Her breasts may feel lumpy and, sometimes, she may notice a clear or slightly cloudy nipple discharge.. These changes are most common in women of childbearing age, but they can affect women of any age. They are the most common benign condition of the breast. They may be found in different parts of the breast and in both breasts at the same time.. Many different changes can be found when fibrocystic breast tissue is looked at ...
Fibrocystic breast disease or fibroadenosis is a non-cancerous breast condition. Causes of fibrocystic breast disease or fibroadenosis include breast pain, breast lump, breast swelling.
Then writer and editor Babette Rosmond was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1971, the second wave of the Womens Liberation Movement that began in the mid-1960s was in its infancy. Still, when told by her doctor that she would need a radical mastectomy-a procedure developed by William Stewart Halsted in 1882-to remove her cancerous left breast, plus underarm lymph nodes and her chest wall muscles, Ms. Rosmond rebelled and said she wanted 3 weeks to think it over. In 3 weeks you may be dead, said her doctor.1. Second Opinion. Undeterred, Ms. Rosmond, then 49, sought a second opinion with George Crile, Jr, MD, a surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic and a pioneer in breast-conserving surgery. Seven years earlier, at the Annual Scientific Assembly of the American Academy of General Practice (later renamed the American Academy of Family Physicians), Dr. Crile told physicians that too much tissue was being removed in the surgical treatment of many women with malignant and benign breast tumors.. He cited ...
Most breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous). All women have lumpy breasts and many lumps or nodules that women find are areas of normal breast tissue which can become more prominent and lumpy just before a period
Dr. Chapa responded: Fibrocystic changes. Assuming no other symptoms, what you describe could be fibrocyctic breasts. A common issue amoung women.They are not malignant. Adequate breast support and wearing a bra at night, may provide relief of symptoms. |a href=/topics/antiinflammatory track_data={
Pain under the right breast could be referred from the organs located in the right side of the abdomen. Medical conditions associated with the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, or kidneys could be contributing factors for pain below the right breast. Test is a risk assessment tool developed by Silbiotech, Inc for patients who have been diagnosed with Atypical and other hyperplasias.
sialosyl-T antigen: a mucin-type antigen present in normal breast tissue & benign lesions; not diagnostic for malignant breast lesions
Few things can be more frightening for a woman than to be told that she has a lump in her breast, because even when these tumors are benign, they are believed to indicate an increased risk of breast
