The fiber optic indicia is represented as a predetermined pattern marked on the fiber optic component and is associated with data about at least one of an optical characteristic and a product characteristic. According to a preferred embodiment, the fiber optic indicia is marked on a chamfered surface of a ferrule. The fiber optic indicia may include at least one alphanumerical character, a symbol, or combinations thereof. The method comprises establishing the predetermined pattern of the fiber optic indicia, providing a fiber optic component for marking, preparing a predetermined portion of a surface of the fiber optic component for marking, and marking the predetermined portion in accordance with the predetermined pattern of the fiber optic indicia.

In this research, the sensitivity distribution properties of a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) to ultrasonic waves were investigated employing the surface attachment method. A careful consideration was taken and examined by experimental results to explain that the distances and angles between the sensor and ultrasonic source influence not only the amplitudes, but also the initial phases, waveforms, and spectra of detected signals. Furthermore, factors, including the attachment method and the materials geometric dimensions, were also discussed. Although these results were obtained based on PS-FBG, they are also applicable to a normal FBG sensor or even an optical fiber sensor, due to the identical physical changes induced by ultrasonic waves in all three. Thus, these results are useful for applications of optical fiber sensors in non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring.

This application relates to a fibre optic cable which is adapted for use in a distributed fibre optic sensor such as a distributed acoustic sensor. The cable (201) comprises at least one optical fibre (208) and a shear thickening non-Newtonian fluid (202) disposed within the cable. The presence of a shear thickening fluid in the cable means that in response to a mechanical vibration or strain such as due to an incident acoustic wave the apparent viscosity of the non-Newtonian fluid will increase. In effect the cable will stiffen which will increase the strain on the optical fibre used for sensing, and thus increase the sensitivity of the cable to incident signals. The non-Newtonian fluid may be a dilatant material and/or a rheopectic material and may comprise comprises a plurality of particles disposed within a liquid.

We report the first experimental demonstration of a humidity insensitive polymer optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG), as well as the first FBG recorded in a TOPAS polymer optical fiber in the important low loss 850nm spectral region. For the demonstration we have fabricated FBGs with resonance wavelength around 850 nm and 1550 nm in single-mode microstructured polymer optical fibers made of TOPAS and the conventional poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Characterization of the FBGs shows that the TOPAS FBG is more than 50 times less sensitive to humidity than the conventional PMMA FBG in both wavelength regimes. This review summarizes principles and current stage of development of fiber-optic chemical sensors (FOCS) and biosensors (FOBS). Fiber optic sensor (FOS) systems use the ability of optical fibers (OF) to guide the light in the spectral range from ultraviolet (UV) (180 nm) up to middle infrared (IR) (10 μm) and modulation of guided light by the parameters of the surrounding environment of the OF core. The introduction of OF in the sensor systems has brought advantages such as measurement in flammable and explosive environments, immunity to electrical noises, miniaturization, geometrical flexibility, measurement of small sample volumes, remote sensing in inaccessible sites or harsh environments and multi-sensing. The review comprises briefly the theory of OF elaborated for sensors, techniques of fabrications and analytical results reached with fiber-optic chemical and biological sensors.

This study aims to compare the diagnostic performance of the two different endoscope-based fiber-optic Raman probe designs (i.e., bevelled and volume Raman probes) for real-time, in vivo detection of gastric dysplasia at endoscopy. To conduct the clinical comparison, a total of 1,050 in vivo tissue Raman spectra (normal: n = 864; dysplasia: n = 186) were acquired from 66 gastric patients (normal: n = 48; dysplasia: n = 18) by using bevelled Raman probe, while a total of 1,913 in vivo tissue Raman spectra (normal: n = 1,786; dysplasia: n = 127) were acquired from 98 gastric patients (normal: n = 87; dysplasia: n = 11) by using volume Raman probe. The bevelled Raman probe provides approximately twofold improvements in tissue Raman-to-autofluorescence intensity ratios as compared to the use of volume Raman probe.
