Reading Time: 3 minutes. Viability (a babys ability to survive outside the womb if born prematurely), has had a huge impact on the abortion debate. The gestational age of viability is the point at which many elected officials who advocate for abortion will concede that abortion should cease to be a legal option. Consequently, 21 states maintain abortion laws prohibiting the killing of a preborn child who has reached the age of viability. Until recently, 24 weeks gestation was accepted across the board as the age at which doctors would intervene to save a child born prematurely. But, according to the New York Times, new research suggests that more doctors should intervene to assist babies born as early as 22 weeks.. The ability of a very premature child to survive hinges heavily on the development of his lungs. Some doctors reject the notion that a child faces good enough odds of survival prior to 24 weeks, so they simply will not intervene for a baby born earlier. However, physicians have ...

Prior to Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton, there was no such concept as a post-viability abortion. Abortion was, by definition, the death, either natural or inflicted, of a pre-viable fetus. The closest practice to what we know as late abortion was the destructive operation, performed to remove a fetus who had died during obstructed labor. The destructive operation is sometimes still used in areas that lack the medical facilities to perform safe Cesarean sections,[2][3] but elsewhere it has been supplanted.[4] With Roe and Doe, the Supreme Court declared that there was a Constitutional right to an "abortion" even past fetal viability. US abortionists thus were limited in scope only by their own willingness to destroy fetal life. It was only after the Planned Parenthood vs. Casey decision that states were permitted to limit post-viability abortions. Many still do not have, or do not enforce, laws that Casey had established as enforceable. In the immediate post-Roe era, abortions past the midpoint ...
Pregnant rats and rabbits were treated with paricalcitol by once-daily intravenous (IV) injection during the period of organogenesis (in rats, from gestation day (GD) 6 to 17; in rabbits, from GD 6 to 18). Rats were dosed at 0, 0.3, 1.0 or 3.0 mcg/kg/day and rabbits at 0, 0.03, 0.1 or 0.3 mcg/kg/day, representing up to 2 or 0.5 times, respectively, the maximum recommended human dose (MRHD) of 0.24 mcg/kg, based on body surface area (mg/m2). Slightly decreased fetal viability was observed in both studies at the highest doses representing 2 and 0.5 times, respectively, the MRHD in the presence of maternal toxicity (decreased body weight and food consumption). Pregnant rats were administered paricalcitol by IV injection three times per week at doses of 0, 0.3, 3.0 or 20.0 mcg/kg/day throughout gestation, parturition and lactation (GD 6 to lactation day (LD) 20) representing exposures up to 13 times the MHRD. A small increase in stillbirths and pup deaths from parturition to LD 4 were observed at ...

According to the U.S. District Court of Southern Indianas document on the outcome, Pratt ruled in the petitioners favor to place a preliminary injunction on the law while the organization pursues litigation challenging the constitutionality of three of its provisions: forbidding abortion based solely on a fetus sex, race or disability; requiring abortion providers to inform clients of this law; and requiring the remains of an aborted fetus to be buried or cremated.. In the document, Pratt states that the stay was granted because "PPINK is likely to succeed on the merits of its challenge to the anti-discrimination provisions because they directly contravene the principal established in Roe v. Wade … that a state may not prohibit a woman from making the ultimate decision to have an abortion prior to fetal viability.. "Similarly, the information dissemination provision is likely unconstitutional as it requires abortion providers to convey almost certainly false information to their ...
One of the most important things to do before planning an event or presentation is to come up with goals. Why are you putting on this presentation in the first place? Once you establish clear goals, you want to accomplish them right? Research shows that you are twice as likely to accomplish your goals by using visual aids.. According to Professor Albert Mehrabian, 55% of the information we take in is visual while only 7% is text. Believe it or not, we are 50% more likely to retain a visual message after 3 days compared to bullet points where we only remember about 10% of the message portrayed. Remember the old adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" - the same idea holds true for presentations. Keep that in mind the next time you are preparing slides.. Brigitte posted recently on U.K.s bid to lower the gestational age limit on abortion from 24 to 20 weeks in light of improved outcomes for extremely premature infants. An accompanying piece to the Telegraphs article featured a toddler born at 23 weeks gestation and his mother commenting on the proposed revised guidelines.. Now, I want to be very careful in critiquing an effort that would no doubt reduce the number of abortions performed. That being said, my area of specialty in bioethics is neonatal ethics. Ive seen enough infants born at 23 weeks gestation to last me a lifetime and while I support making every reasonable effort to support them medically while they grow enough lung and brain tissue to make it in the big wide world, Im not sure I understand why abortion should be prevented with more gusto when it targets a viable fetus. My objection is philosophical: abortion cannot be half-right or half-wrong. Either the fetus is human or its not. You have to take the life of a viable fetus ...

These illustrations are computer generated maps of the overlap between how an organization describes itself (to donors) and how storytellers describe the organization or some relevant social problem.

WOW -- what a great article! Using story word maps we can now do gap analyses showing the differences (or similarities) between the stories an organization tells about itself and the stories a community, customers, or the press share about it. This is so cool!

As this article demonstrates with the organizations they analyzed, you can clearly see where the intersections a, where the gaps are, and where the missed opportunities are. The author uses visual word maps to show us the results. The fact that the results are visual is fabulous! And easy to grasp/Interpret.

Oh, I cant wait to start playing with this. It doesnt appear as if there are easy tools yet to do this, so generating the word maps will take time and effort. But I think well worth it.

Any app developers out
This chapter seeks to identify the limited circumstances in which an innocent human life may be terminated in order to protect the rights of others. It investigates conflicts such as that between conjoined twins, between a pregnant woman and a viable fetus, and in the context of a hijacked plane being used as a weapon It is argued that one life may be taken to save another if there will be a net gain in human life, provided that a) the intervening action only diverts an existing threat, rather than introducing a new threat to an individuals life, and b) the intervening action does not entail an infringement of an individuals rights and thus treat him or her as a means to an end. It is also argued that a viable fetus right to life does not obligate the fetus mother to permit it to continue to use her body in order to preserve its life. ...

Thanks, Maxine! I dont think we are allowed to take any visual aids in with us - but I have made myself familiar with the axis chart and would be able to draw one up. I thought that if I can tell which area it should fall into, i.e. in example 2 above I can tell its a right axis deviation, so it must fall into that area on the pie chart, so cant be -30 but must be 150 degrees. Hoping that I am on the right track but it seems to be working with the ones I have worked through so far. Your method is the first one that really made sense to me and which is user friendly and works a treat - thanks again, I will make sure to share it around to all other desperate souls who struggle with this! :). Leesburg, VA, September 21, 2018-Use of a visual aid increased the subjective confidence of radiologists in the dose and route of medication administration in simulated patient reaction to contrast media and led to faster administration of epinephrine, according to an article in the October 2018 issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR).. Patients receiving IV contrasts can have a variety of reactions, including life-threatening anaphylaxis, although such occurrences are rare.. Researchers divided 138 attending radiologists and trainees into 21 sessions as part of a simulated contrast medium reaction program. Eleven groups received a visual aid, 10 groups did not. The visual aid provided was a 8.5 × 11 inch laminated poster placed on top of the contrast medium reaction kit.. The visual aid included clinical decision algorithms for response to the following scenarios: unresponsive, hypotensive, wheezing/bronchospasm, facial/laryngeal edema, and urticaria. Rob taught this lesson, and it was the best one Ive ever seen on repentance. First he told a story about a child that was invited to a super delicious dinner by his mom and dad. (Rob is a great story teller, but Ill do my best to convey the gist of it here.) When he came to dinner his mom said, "if you want to have dinner, you need to wash your hands." The boy said, "I dont want to wash my hands. Theyre not that dirty." The mom told him that even if they are a little dirty, he still needs to wash them. She said, "Please wash them. I have this dinner ready for you, and I will be sad to see you miss out on your favorite dinner.". …So, what would you do if this happened to you?. Our Heavenly Father has promised us a joyful life with Him if we will just repent when we make a mistake. Some things will take more time to resolve than others, but in the end the reward will be worth the effort.. Then we went through each scripture on these visual aids to show the steps of repentance. We all took ...

Rates of embryo survival in lactating dairy cows were assessed in three separate studies. Based on pregnancy diagnoses 27 to 29 days after timed inseminations, survival to days 40 to 50 or day 57, depending on the study, varied from 9 to 88% in cows that were not cycling before insemination compared to 57 to 90% in cows that were cycling. Previously anestrous cows had lower rates of survival. In one study, supplementing cows with progesterone before insemination improved embryo survival ...

The remakes pilot is quite a faithful copy of the originals, and so the instances in which the two diverge are not only glaring but telling. In the original, its Maya who insists that the murder suspect, who turns out to have an airtight alibi, must know the murderer. Sam dismisses this idea, but it turns out to be right. In the remake, its Sam who has this brainwave and Maya who doubts him. In the original, Sam calls Annie up in front of the bullpen so she can tell him why the killer didnt gag his victim. In the remake, Sam asks Annie up front so she can act as a silent visual aid while he explains to the other detectives that the killer needs to see his victims mouths because he wants to kiss them (an experience she later describes as thrilling). Perhaps most crucially, the crux of the episode, and of the entire show, is missing--Sam never has to decide whether to suppress evidence of the killers mental problems in the past in order to stop him from killing in the future. Other ...

Female reproductive performance is a critical component of sustainable pig production systems. There is abundant evidence of genetic variation in these traits among pig breeds. The aims of this study were to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting reproductive traits and to identify and characterise positional candidate gene(s) underlying the QTL. A Large White - Meishan F2 population was scanned for QTL with effects on reproductive traits. This analysis revealed 13 putative QTLs on seven different chromosomes with effects on five different traits: ovulation rate (OR), teat number (TN), prenatal survival (PS), total born alive (TBA) and litter size (LS). QTL for PS and LS on chromosome 8 were fine mapped and Secreted Phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) confirmed as a candidate gene. A genome-wide association study was performed on a diverse population of different breeds and crosses lines, for reproductive traits including LS, TBA, number of stillborn piglets, and number of mummified piglets. ...

On gestation day 18, the mice were sacrificed; the uterine contents and ovaries were examined for the number of implantation sites, number of resorptions, sex and number of viable fetuses, fetal head and body size, external abnormalities, number of dead fetuses, fetal and placental weights. One-half of the live fetuses per litter were examined for visceral malformations and the other half - for skeletal malformations. Results ...
Posters have played a major role in AIDS education. All over the world, government agencies have produced posters with a wide variety of aims and objectives. Poster campaigns vary according to the nature of the institutions which produce them, and according to local needs. Medical information and social policies change over time, while concrete experience of the epidemic varies greatly within and between different parts of the world. Thus, in the countries of northern Europe, the majority of cases of HIV (the virus that damages the immune system) and AIDS (the life-threatening conditions from which the body may then be at risk) are among gay men. In the south of Europe, most cases are among drug-users and their sexual partners.. In most countries, however, there has been a marked contrast between national, state-funded AIDS education aimed at the general public, and education produced by charities and community-based organisations targeting specific social groups. Governments of all political ...
