We analyzed nucleotide variation in rbcL (the gene encoding the large subunit of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) from 99 genera of leptosporangiate ferns representing 31 of the 33 extant families. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred using three methods: neighbor joining, maximum parsimony, and maximum likelihood. All three methods resulted in optimal trees that were similar. Within the context of those taxa examined, these trees suggest that: 1) Polypodiaceae, Grammitidaceae and Pleurosoriopsis form a monophyletic group that is most derived among indusiate ferns; 2) Davallia is closely related to the Polypodiaceae; 3) Tectaria is related to Oleandraceae rather than to other members of Dryopteridaceae; 4) Rumohra and Elaphoglossum are closely related; 5) Dryopteridaceae are polyphyletic; 6) a monophyletic group consists of Polypodiaceae, Grammitidaceae, Davalliaceae, Oleandraceae, Nephrolepidaceae, Lomariopsidaceae, Dryopteridaceae, Thelypteridaceae, Blechnaceae, Aspleniaceae, and

To understand water flow in tracheary elements, hydraulic conductances per unit length were measured and then compared with theoretical values calculated from xylem anatomical measurements using the Hagen -Poiseuille relation for nine species of pteridophytes, including Psilotum and eight species of ferns. In ferns the water potential gradients were essentially constant from the root tips to the distal portion of the leaf rachises, although somewhat larger gradients were found from the petiolule onward. Using Radix imperatoriae (the root of masterwort) as an example, we describe an efficient approach for the isolation, identification and evaluation of bioactive plant components on an analytical scale. The extraction of Radix imperatoriae with ethyl acetate was enhanced by the application of ultrasound oscillations. This rhizome extract was applied to three pathogenic bacteria ( Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus) to determine its antimicrobial activity. Disk diffusion was utilized to determine susceptibility. The extract components were separated using a series of chromatography approaches (semi-preparative RP-HPLC, or RP-HPLC on an analytical scale), followed by testing. This study describes the phenology of sporophytes of the fern Dryopteris filix-mas in relation to whole plant development. Sterile and fertile potted sporophytes were set out at an exposed site and the seasonal development of the fronds was measured from the commencement of unfolding, through the phase of increasing length, up to discoloration. The physiological activity of the fronds was determined by measuring photosynthetic gas exchange. The fronds of sterile sporophytes unfolded in April, about a week earlier than those of fertile plants, but the colour had already begun to turn in September and their life span was 1-2 months shorter. However, between mid-June and the end of August the sterile sporophytes put out several sets of new fronds: these overwintered without changing color and were still photosynthetically active in the following spring. This research consortium sponsored by a large grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific research (NWO) brings together many of the excellent research groups in the Netherlands with a research programme on the foundations of language. A night after Fijis men clinched back-to-back Olympic golds, the Pacific island nations womens team shocked Canada 26-12. Fiji piled on 21 points before the 2016 bronze medalists could respond.
VNTR polymorphism of AFLP loci D17S5 and APOB was analyzed in 100 unrelated individuals residing in the Basque Country by PCR amplification and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Population parameters were estimated to validate these loci as routine markers in human identification. Thus, although both loci showed extensive polymorphism (with gene diversities of approximately 80% for both systems) and although concordance with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and linkage equilibrium was observed, comparisons with other populations displayed significant differences. Moreover, further analysis of neutral parameters limits this validation to Dl 7S5 because APOB displays excesses of both the total number of alleles and the number of rare alleles; possible reasons for this discrepancy (presence of deleterious alleles, bottleneck effect, admixture, complexity of APOB polymorphism) are discussed.
In August 1860, Robert OHara Burke led an expedition of men, including William John Wills as surveyor, out of Melbourne. Their aim was to be the first people to cross the continent from south to north. Burke and Wills planned to open up a route that would connect the newly invented telegraph line to Europe, via Java. They wanted to investigate a possible route for a railway line and discover if there was an inland sea. Three months after setting out, Burke and Wills set up a base camp in Coopers Creek and were running out of food. They were offered nardoo by the local Aborigines and gladly accepted it. It satisfied their appetite and soon after, they began to prepare their own nardoo, grinding it up and mixing it with water to make a thin paste, as they had seen the local people do. Despite eating up to four or five pounds a day between us, as Wills notes in his journal, the two explorers grew weaker and thinner and developed symptoms such as shaking legs and a gradually slowing pulse.
