To understand the term "ideal feminine", we need to understand what femininity is. "It embodies a constellation of meanings, it generally refers to the attributes, behaviors, interests, mannerisms, appearances, roles, and expectations that we have come to associate with being female during the socialization processes. Gender role socialization relies on modeling and reinforcement - girls and women learn and internalize socially expected and acceptable feminine traits and behaviors and are rewarded for gender-appropriate behavior." [61] The Psychology of Women Quarterly also mentions that there are numerous psychological problems that are related to femininity among women and adolescent girls. The social construct of femininity has adverse effects on women. What is lacking in current research of femininity is "a tool that allows for understanding womens subjective femininity experiences and assessing their relationships to womens psychological health."[61] What was later developed was the ...
Hence, changes in human behavioral patterns may be associated with prenatal exposure to estrogenic substances such as diethylstilbestrol (DES).. This paper reviews relevant studies from a series of laboratories and finds that no clear-cut differences can be demonstrated to date between unexposed and DES-exposed women in gender-related behavior, although the physical and psychological impact of the problems associated with exposure to DES are well documented.. If both prenatal and postnatal influences such as social, economic, and environmental factors are taken into consideration, individual variation is more apparent than differences in gender-related behavior between unexposed and DES-exposed women.. In summary, gender-related behavior is determined by a complex array of interacting factors, and prenatal influences are only one of many developmental events. More studies are needed using larger populations with carefully controlled selection criteria to suggest a direct role of prenatal DES ...

Do you remember when Lady Gaga did her drag king thing on the Video Music Awards? Her king persona (Joe something?) was a stripped down folk-rocker. No frills music for a no frills rocker in a no frills gender. I think theres something there worth deconstructing.. In our present system of gender, when drawing the lines between femininity and masculinity, weve positioned the latter as being the natural, stripped down, down-to-earth, nice and simple, no-frills, no-frivolity concept. We like to imagine that the masculine is just pragmatic and to the point, lacking in any unnecessary aesthetic considerations. We imagine it to be efficient and direct. Conversely, the feminine is believed to be artifice, an elaborate costume, all just poses and aesthetics and frivolous dalliance, wholly lacking in any pragmatic value. Its an ornament, rather than a tool, and is anything but direct, instead regarded as endlessly complex, subtle, mysterious and intuitive. Full of uncanny, inscrutable excesses like ...
You may already know Heather Gabel, the Detroit based artist behind hundreds of t-shirts and logos for bands like Alkaline Trio, Green Day, and Garbage. Experienced in many mediums, Gabel is also an accomplished collage artist, combining xerox copies with painting, watercolor paper, and photography into her work with a feminine edge. Finding a magic in things past, Gabel aims to capture a timelessness in her work, where femininity, she says, is a result of her personal reverence for the strength that she correlates with women.. "The woman of the past is much more attractive to me in her more solemn and stoic state, like the calm surface of still water concealing unknown depths and endless possibilities, theres a mystery there that todays general depiction of vacant smiling women lacks for me. I also revel in breathing new lives into these women, now deceased, putting them in a context that they surely wouldnt ever have imagined," Gabel explained.. ...
Do muscles have gender, or are they, on the contrary, ungendered human meat? Other than the few muscles associated with their sexual organs, men and women have the same muscles. Does this make muscles neuter, or perhaps neutral? Is there some "difference" between the biceps of a male and those of a female other than, possibly, that of size? If a womans biceps, or quadriceps, are bigger than a mans, are hers more masculine than his? In the eyes of most beholders, the more muscle a woman has, the more "masculine" she is. The same, of course, is true for men: the more muscle a man has, the more masculine he is too. Bodybuilding in a sense is a sport dedicated to wiping out "femininity," insofar as femininity has for centuries connoted softness, passivity, non-aggressivity, and physical weakness. Eradicating femininity just may be the purpose of both male and female bodybuilders. Even so, for men to wage war on femininity, whether their own or somebody elses, is nothing new. For women, however, ...

Symmetry and masculinity in human faces have been proposed to be cues to the quality of the owner. Accordingly, symmetry is generally found attractive in male and female faces, and femininity is attractive in female faces. Womens preferences for male facial masculinity vary in ways that may maximize genetic benefits to womens offspring. Here we examine same- and opposite-sex preferences for both traits (Study 1) and intercorrelations between preferences for symmetry and sexual dimorphism in faces (Study 1 and Study 2) using computer-manipulated faces. For symmetry, we found that male and female judges preferred symmetric faces more when judging faces of the opposite-sex than when judging same-sex faces. A similar pattern was seen for sexual dimorphism (i.e., women preferred more masculine male faces than men did), but women also showed stronger preferences for femininity in female faces than men reported. This suggests that women are more concerned with female femininity than are men. We also ...
In this essay I study two novellas by Anne Charlotte Leffler, "En bal i societeten" and "I krig med samhället". In order to do this, I use some of the differences between male and female writing that Ingeborg Nordin Hennel discusses in her study "Ämnar kanske fröken publicera något?": Kvinnligt och manligt i 1880-talets novellistik. For the analysis of "I krig med samhället" I also use the text "Stabat mater" by Julia Kristeva. Anne Charlotte Leffler describes femininity both as a shortcoming and as a possibility in her authorship. In this essay I focus on femininity as a shortcoming. In my opinion "shortcoming" is not the proper description. I have therefore introduced the term "novella of disillusionment" to describe the novellas. My idea is that the female protagonist through disillusionment comes to the understanding of the double standards and limiting conventions of women. This is the insight that underlies femininity as a possibility.. I want to show how the two novellas lead to ...
During the coming months or during menstruation, time may be the most difficult to treat organ of femininity. The following should be noted carefully how complete and properly care for the organ of femininity while menstruating. How to care the first one deals with dressing, frequently change pads at least three times a day, mainly two to six days during menstruation. Time is running out, a rather thin pads wear it better than you replace the bandage once a day because of fluid that accommodated very little. You should use anti-bacterial bandage, because when the menstruation is the bacteria are easily spread. Stop discharging liquid cleaners or soaps containing perfumes femininity, because this also triggers the growth of bacteria. While urinating, make sure your female organs clean and dry after that use anti-bacterial wipes and more advisable to wear dry wipes ...
The inherent femininity of Muslim women who wear the hijab is thus a theme to be explored, as is the seeming "foreignness" of the hijab. Are there ways to make non-Muslim Americans understand the hijab as essentially American? Are there ways to argue for femininity within the framework of Islamic modesty, in a way that non-Muslims can understand?. As for Muslim men, much of nativist fear is rooted in the idea of Muslim men as forced into sexual sublimation, that is, unable to view female flesh or act on their lust outside of marriage. Nativists perceive Muslim mens modesty in this regard as a threat. Can peacetime dialogue change this conception? Is there a way that male chastity can be explained for its voluntariness, and perhaps even for its inherent masculinity?. Often, cross-cultural dialogue revolves around generalities, focusing on the minutiae of religious history and ritual or varying cultural practices. Broad-based, but deeply probing, discussions on notions of masculinity and ...
Washington D.C. is the capital of the U.S and a truly amazing place to visit. With its wealth of museums, exhibits, and history, it is a vacation spot that should not be missed. Getting around the city is made easy with an abundance of different options available from public transport to bus tours. Here are four ways to get around while visiting this beautiful city. Car service. Booking a chauffeured car service is a great alternative to hiring a car. Whether its a Dulles car service straight from the airport to your accommodation or a trip from your hotel for a night at the theatre, it is an extremely comfortable and luxurious way to get there.. Metrorail. With 91 stations dotted around the city, the Metrorail is D.C.s underground service. It is open from 5 am and closes at midnight every weekday making it a great way to travel. Although you can buy individual tickets, purchasing a SmarTrip card is a good idea. Its a travel money card that credit can be added to at any time. It can also be ...
What kind of a scientist are you? Not important where it comes from? Even if masculinization/feminization are not involved? One cannot talk about more masculine or more feminine features unless one shows that greater masculinization or greater feminization is involved, respectively, which is something that you have been unable to show to back up your idiosyncratic notions.. No, I have not argued for the greater masculinization of East Asiatic women. I have simply disputed your assertion of their greater femininity. What is this talk about "Europiform Sinids"? All East Asian populations are strikingly different from Europeans. Besides, by your reasoning, even the "Europiform Sinids" have to be assigned greater femininity compared to European women. For the umpteenth time, I have to point out that the flattest mid-faces are found among the East Asiatic people whom you classify as most masculine (Sinids/Tungids) among East Asians.. Dont accuse me of not distinguishing between different East ...
Im always a little hesitant to weigh in on the questions for femmes, simply because while Im a feminine type of girl and that femininity is definitely deliberate in some ways, Im bisexual and I guess I tend to hear "femme" as a primarily lesbian label in my head. But, this ones interesting (they all are) so here goes.. - I shave my underarms and legs, and very occasionally my forearms. I wax my eyebrows and pluck them between waxes, and I shave my pubic hair. I shave because I love the way smooth skin feels, and because theres something almost exposed and vulnerable about a hairless body, which is very sexy to me.. - I think I started shaving when I was twelve, and as I got older I started to question why I was doing it and stopped for a while, but I found I felt less like me when I let the hair grow. These visual markers of femininity are so much a part of my identity, I dislike letting go of them. And theres a -ritual- to it all that I love. My whole family is full of anxiety issues, and ...

Thought 2: I assume one of the better arguments for separate womens sports is that, in many sports, women would not be able to compete at the highest level, and we want our little girls to have role models that look like them. Why these role models have to be doing something in which the best men in the world vastly outperform the best women in the world is a bit unclear -- perhaps a better option would be to introduce more competitions in which the top competitors are female, or at least biologically could be (for example, Im completely guessing here, but it seems likely that most of the top shooters in the world are men, but that this is more a function of culture than of natural abilities ...
This two-year master thesis in Library and information science, explores how femininity is created within the librarian profession year 1900-1930 in Sweden. By using three Swedish female librarians as case studies I study how female librarians responded to norms for women within the profession. I also ask if the librarians were able to break these norms or if the standards for women formed how the librarian profession was shaped. The thesis has a queer theoretical framework and uses hermeneutic methodology together with Judith But-lers performativity theory and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivaks deconstruktivism. Queer theory and hermeneutic methodology can be used on historical sources to gain new perspectives and still be aware of the ideals and norms that existed within the historical period. I use "woman" and "femininity" as socially constructed gender categories that changes according to the context they are created within and in relation to.My main source material consists of articles and letters ...
Several indicated my suffering must be due to weight gain or a self-care problem. Others suggested it was psychosomatic. Even a couple of close friends chastised me for talking about "period problems"-all this, despite my emphasizing that a) I no longer had a period due to years of hormonal suppression, and b) I was still in serious pain EVERY day, not just a few days out of the month. Gradually I learned to keep my struggles to myself.. COUNTLESS WOMEN SUFFER IN SILENCE. In the course of pouring over endless pages on the Internet looking for some, any relief, I saw hundreds, thousands of stories just like mine. Women who were putting on a brave face, attempting to work, tend to husbands and children (for those with endo who were lucky enough to have kids) meanwhile struggling privately with torturous symptoms.. Finally, on New Years Eve of 2012, at a point of desperation, I made a bold decision. I would have specialized excision surgery. My online research showed it had helped many women, even ...

Several weeks ago, before the onset of "social distancing," students in my graduate seminar on Queer Feminist Cinema watched Chantal Akermans Les Rendez-vous dAnna (France/Belgium/Germany, 1978). The film begins in the German city of Essen, where Anna Silver (Aurore Clément)-a young filmmaker-arrives to introduce her work at a small movie theatre. But, the reason for Annas trip to Germany is merely incidental or autobiographical; we dont attend the screenings and we hear no details about her work. Les Rendez-vous dAnna, instead, shows us Annas artists tour as a series of connections (and misconnections) with strangers, family, and lovers in Germany, Belgium, and France. These others all want Anna to take on their disappointments and to somehow patch them, cure their malaise. The first encounter, Heinrich (Helmut Griem), whose father "died at Stalingrad" and whose wife left him "for a Turk," serves as a portrait of deflated, post-war Germany. In fact, the film functions as a tour of ...
Ruth: I had an interesting thought process not long ago, that I will try to share. When I do an extra chore for someone, we would consider it a chance to bless them, or a chance to serve, right? What if it was my responsibility to do that chore? Is it still a chance to serve? When I go to do the dishes every day, I consider it as one of my jobs, when really it is another opportunity to serve! Some practical ways I help out around the house are taking care of getting my father and brother ready for work. Getting their breakfast, lunch, and drinks, is something my sisters and I have done for a while now. It is such a blessing, although sometimes that line between duty and opportunity gets gray :). I have been blessed with the ability to sew and I enjoy doing it, as I can make clothes for my family when needed. The Holy Spirit nudged me awhile back that I needed to be more helpful so I have tried to do better, sometimes I will be caught up in my school or some other thing, when I realize I need to ...

Let me just share with you three reasons I love the Brilliant Life Planner.. Its Feminine. A feminine look may seem like a ridiculous reason to choose a planner. I know from experience, however, that if Im not captivated by the layout and graphics of a planner, I wont use it. And if I dont use it, its not really helping me, is it?!. More importantly, the feminine design reminds me that my mission of supporting women is worthwhile. We can be strong and educated and powerful and still retain our femininity!. But if youre not super sparkly girly (thats me), theres good news. There are SIX different covers to choose from. You can choose the one that best suits your taste.. Its Thorough. The Brilliant Life Planner is perfect for me because it encompasses both personal and professional goals. Ive used planners in the past that were two separate exercises of goal setting and forecasting and project managing. But the reality is, my personal life and my professional life are so intertwined, ...
There are of course not many upsides to a global pandemic, but one of them may be that the single biggest threat to youth wellbeing is lessened.. Founders of free-play advocacy organisation Let Grow, Lenore Skenazy and Peter Gray, point out that anxiety is an already huge problem for young people that has also been snowballing in severity and prevalence.. They attribute this trend to the increasing tendency for young people to be constantly supervised and micromanaged by their parents, to the extent that they cant build up self-confidence by choosing for themselves what to do and figuring out how to do it.. By contrast, during the coronavirus lockdown in America theyve noticed that both the ability and willingness of parents to schedule their childrens time has been massively curtailed. The result is that even when confined to their homes, kids have far more unstructured time to play, develop interests and otherwise do things on their own.. Through their work with Let Grow, Lenore and Peter ...
Eating at college often takes place in the presence of fellow students. The presence of these peers may influence food choices both through the gender of the individual, and the social setting (Allen-ODonnell et al., 2011). Social setting can be categorized as eating alone, eating with friends or strangers in a same gender group, eating with friends or strangers in an opposite gender group, or eating with friends or strangers in a mixed gender group. Gender may influence food choices through social influences, which refer to the way people act in order to convey a particular impression. This can cause people to conform their food choices to attain a societal standard (Pliner & Mann, 2004). For instance females should eat less food than males, for a smaller meal conveys femininity, while males should eat larger meals to convey masculinity. Further, culturally-defined body-image ideals, where males are to be muscular and females are to be thin, may also influence food choices (Allen-ODonnell et ...
The purpose of this study was to examine relations between womens involvment in sports and three psychological constructs: role conflict, sex-role identification, and multidimensional self-concepts. The three groups comprised female powerlifters competing in a national championship (n = 30), high school female athletes (n = 46), and high school female nonathletes (n = 46). Role conflict was not substantial except for a few specific areas related to conflicting expectations of appropriate female and athlete behavior. Both athletic groups scored substantially higher on masculinity (M) and on self-concept of physical ability than the nonathletic group, but there were no group differences on femininity (F) and few substantial differences in other areas of self-concept. Hence the results provide further support for the construct validity of androgyny and for the multidimensionality of self-concept. The major findings, that female athletes can be more M without being less F, and that female athletic ...
Laurie and Debbie say:. As women in this culture, of course we have known since we were teenagers that women are only allowed to have hair on our heads. For Debbie, deciding not to shave her legs in college was a radical decision. Laurie had a close friend who was subjected to severe and dangerous medical treatment in the late 1950s for being too hairy.. What neither of us knew was that since the 1960s, there has been a formal quantitative scale for female body hair. Mona Chalabi, writing in The Guardian, combs through this history brilliantly.. What can be dismissed as trivial is a source of deep anxiety for many women, but thats what female facial hair is; a series of contradictions. Its something thats common yet considered abnormal, natural for one gender and freakish for another. The reality isnt quite so clearcut. Merran Toerien, who wrote her PhD on the removal of female body hair, explained "biologically the boundary lines on body hair between masculinity and femininity are much more ...
This thesis investigates how students in upper secondary school solve problems and discuss physics in small groups. The study examines how gender, knowledge in physics and the image of the subject physics are constructed in the students conversation and how these processes are related to each other. The theoretical framework includes a sociocultural perspective on learning and a gender perspective that views gender as both process and discourse and focus on how femininity and masculinity are constructed in social relations. 28 students in two classes at the science program participated in the study. 8 videotaped group discussions and 15 audiotaped interviews where analysed through thematic analysis and discourse analysis according to different research questions.. The results show the complexity of a learning conversation. The character of the dialogue in the groups, the difficulties the student encounter when dealing with the tasks, and the social interaction in the groups, has a deep impact ...
Lighter of frame and finer built than their Grand Bleu de Gascogne and Grand Gascon-Saintongeois forebears, the Ariegeois hounds nevertheless have retained a great amount of the character and quality enjoyed by their parent breeds. Although the smallest and most finely-built of the "Blue mottled breeds of the Midi" (Grand Bleu de Gascogne, Grand Gascon-Saintongeois and Ariegeois), the Ariegeois is still a hound whose endurance and staying power is highly regarded by French houndsmen, and the breed must therefore immediately impress as a hound of substance. Considering the breeds hunting history, individual hounds should have moderate bone, and ample muscle. Males are heavier than females. Defects such as bull necks, out at the elbows, loaded shoulders, or a beef steer profile should not be confused with masculinity. Likewise, defects such as a shallow muzzle, poorly-formed chest, extremely narrow pelvic region, and general frailty should not be confused with femininity ...
Although she had gained considerable attention in academia for promoting the notion that masculinity and femininity are merely social "constructions" and for winning, in 1998, first prize in the annual Bad Writing contest of the journal Philosophy and Literature, it was not until a decade ago that Butler achieved national prominence as an anti-Israel agitator.. In September 2002 Harvard president Lawrence Summers had charged that "at Harvard and …universities across the country" faculty-initiated petitions were calling "for the university to single out Israel among all nations as the lone country where it is inappropriate for any part of the universitys endowment to be invested.". In August 2003 Butler, already a signatory of nearly every major anti-Israel petition, including the "divestment" one, circulating on American campuses, published a rebuttal of Summers called "No, Its Not Antisemitic" in the London Review of Books. Summers had chivalrously gone out of his way to say that "Serious ...

Recent research on sex differences in career and achievement motivation have used one dimensional definitions for the constructs. To investigate sex differences in four dimensions of career motivation, one dimension of achievement motivation, and three clusters of antecedent factors for young women and men, 212 high school graduates (112 females, 100 males), who were 3 years out of high school, completed a battery of career and achievement motivation tests. Data on background characteristics, self-concept factors, and environmental context factors were collected also. An analysis of the results indicated that females endorse a feminine sex role orientation, demonstrate more academic achievement, and are more satisfied with their current role. Males endorse a masculine sex role orientation and are more committed to an occupational career. These findings highlight information on intervention needs of use to the practitioner. (BL)
I can see by most woman here in this Blog have a natural tender feminine heart. For those who say a man is weak because he is seen crying in front of his wife or girlfriend tells me that such woman have hearts as cold as stone. If a crying man is seen crying as a weakness in front of his female companion its strictly a bias stereotype. Men tend to act that their more stronger than women emotionally because its inbred into them by the illusions of society. Women and Men humanly have identical emotions. Men just cover them up with vulnerable invisible masks and walls of defense. Everybody wears vulnerable masks. Im sure deep inside the nurturing powers of femininity within a woman knows how to make her man cry if she really tried. And sometimes to for the better of the relationship. ...

In todays global market, ideas about family, femininity, and reproduction are traded on as actively as any currency or stock. The connection has a history, one rooted in a conception of feminine identities invented through a science interwoven with the pursuit of empire, the accumulation of goods, and the furtherance of power. It is this history that Robin Truth Goodman exposes in her provocative analysis of literary and political representations of female infertility from the mid-nineteenth century to our day. Goodman takes Darwins studies on sterility between species as her starting point, exploring evolutionary science as the intersection of a colonial worldview based on class struggle and the pathologizing of female identities that fall outside reproductive normalcy. She then examines how Joseph Conrad constructs a vision of feminism as a product of miscegenation, how Alejo Carpentier and Mario Vargas Llosa deploy female figures of miscegenation to recast Latin American literature as ...
Lashing out at the hegemonic role of CGI related to the inception of integral reality, Baudrillard states in The Intelligence of Evil, "The computer-generated image is like this too, a digital image which is entirely fabricated, has no real referent." The philosopher further clarifies, "The ultimate violence done to the image is the violence of the computer-generated image...in the process of computer-generation the referent no longer exists and the real itself no longer has cause to come to pass, being produced immediately as Virtual Reality." Baudrillards mistrust of CGI technology adds another important nuance to his ideas concerning simulated femininity. If the final product of the enhancement process bears as little resemblance to the original image as Baudrillard claims, then the situation of the female subject is even more dire than it was when he published La Société de consommation in 1970. The philosopher poses the disconcerting question whether the ideal feminine body is nothing ...
Belly dancing, what do you think about it? Most of us have the ideal from television and/or movies that it is the dance for the not so modest woman. On the contrary, for some it is an art of expression through dance and for others it is a sensual dance that improves feminine health. It is a dance that teaches a woman to embrace her femininity. It improves your own personal self acceptance and to be comfortable in your own skin. It is one of the best ways I know personally to relieve stress. So dont be afraid!! Give it a try!!. Benefits of the dance: During the dance, the movements of hip drops, circles, figure eights, and shimmies put the joints and ligaments in the lower back and hip through a full range of gentle, repetitive motion. This movement helps increase the flow of synovial fluid (natures lubricant) in these joints. When movements are done properly, the pelvis is tipped forward, or tucked somewhat; a neutral position that can help prevent lower back problems. Belly dancing can help ...

Ghada Amer (b. 1963, Cairo, Egypt) views herself primarily as a painter, but she has worked in a variety of media producing ceramics, site-specific garden works, photographs, prints, drawings, installations, and performance pieces.. The entire construction of the "Mommy Wars" is anti-mother on both sides. One, it formulates preconceived notions regarding work, perpetuating mothering as an internal manifestation of femininity, and work/labor as masculine. Therefore, mothering is not conceived of as being analogous to labor, which is in contradiction to what the majority of indivduals know and acknowledge. Two, it places unnessessary psychological burdens on mothers who do choose or have to work as these repeated messages attempt to insinuate that while women are working their children are suffering. Three, it leaves the roles of fathers completely out of the debate and stresses the tradition that women are the bodies responsible for transfering and illuminating the moral fiber of our culture. Women remain the focus of judgment and fatherhood becomes entrenched in that stereotypical ideal which connects masculitity to financial support and neglects the father/child relationship. Four, it completely neglects homosexual ...
For women diagnosed and subsequently treated for breast cancer, concerns related to sexual health and intimacy are well documented. These concerns may be related to all aspects of breast cancer treatment, from issues related to body image as a result of surgery and/or radiation therapy to the toxic effects of chemotherapy and endocrine treatment.. Surgery on the breast and axilla can result in disfigurement for women, even if the breast is spared. Symmetry may be negatively impacted and scars that remain may serve as a constant reminder of the ...
