Habitat fragmentation can promote patches of small and isolated populations, gene flow disruption between those populations, and reduction of local and total genetic variation. As a consequence, these small populations may go extinct in the long-term. The ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), originally distributed from Texas to southern Brazil and northern Argentina, has been impacted by habitat fragmentation throughout much of its range. To test whether habitat fragmentation has already induced genetic differentiation in an area where this process has been documented for a larger felid (jaguars), we analyzed molecular variation in ocelots inhabiting two Atlantic Forest fragments, Morro do Diabo (MD) and Iguaçu Region (IR). Analyses using nine microsatellites revealed mean observed and expected heterozygosity of 0.68 and 0.70, respectively. Investigations of regional genetic differentiation are essential for describing phylogeographic patterns and informing management efforts for species of conservation concern. In this context, we investigated genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships among great gray owl (Strix nebulosa) populations in western North America, which includes an allopatric range in the southern Sierra Nevada in California. Based on a total dataset consisting of 30 nuclear microsatellite DNA loci and 1938-base pairs of mitochondrial DNA, we found that Pacific Northwest sampling groups were recovered by frequency and Bayesian analyses of microsatellite data and each population sampled, except for western Canada, showed evidence of recent population bottlenecks and low effective sizes. All three of these genetically-valuable ocelots have gone on to produce offspring of their own as a result of natural breeding. The most recent kitten was born at the Santa Ana Zoo in December to Revy, the last of the three AI offspring to reproduce.. Here, we investigate the shape of the proximal and distal humeral epiphyses in extant species of the felids, based on two-dimensional landmark configurations. Geometric morphometric techniques were used to describe shape differences in the context of phylogeny, allometry and locomotion. The influence of these factors on epiphyseal shape was assessed using Principal Component Analysis, Linear Discriminant functions and multivariate regression. Phylogenetic Generalised Least Squares was used to examine the association between size or locomotion and humeral epiphyseal shape, after taking a phylogenetic error term into account. The naming of many saber-toothed species-the most famous being the genus Smilodon, or the saber-toothed cat-sounds like a bit of a macabre joke. The pearly grins of these prehistoric predators might have been the last sight of any creatures that got close enough to appreciate them.. But not all saber-toothed things were aggressively predatory. Some, like the marsupial Thylacosmilus atrox, may have occupied a different niche. As a new study published in the journal PeerJ reports, the pouched, cat-resembling creature may have been more of a scavenger, carefully slicing already-dead carcasses a few million years ago with its ferocious-looking dentition. But it wasnt the eponymous canine teeth that led to this conclusion-it was what the animal was missing.. The impact of stress related to global warming of surface waters has been studied extensively on multiple levels of biological organization. However, the impact of warming on freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae), keystone species in many of the worlds freshwater systems, is poorly understood. A next generation sequencing approach was undertaken to identify genes that were differentially expressed in response to temperature stress. Two species of mussel native to Alabama (USA), Villosa nebulosa and Villosa lienosa, were chosen for study because of the differences in habitat range and conservation status. V. nebulosa is restricted to a relatively narrow range and is of moderate conservation risk, while Villosa lienosa has a large geographic range and is currently stable.
