A comparative study was performed to evaluate best practice culture media and enrichment broths for recovering Salmonella species from human stool samples. A total of 1297 human stools were collected and processed in this study. Evaluation of agar media was carried out by direct plating (DP), 1096 stool samples were inoculated on Modified Semisolid Rappaport-Vassiliadis (MSRV), Xylose-Lysine-Deoxycolate (XLD), MacConkey (MAC), and Hektoen Enteric (HE) agars. Evaluation of enrichment broths were carried out by enrichment all 1297 stool samples in Selenite broth (SB), Rappaport-Vassiliadis (RV) broth, and Buffered Peptone Water (BPW), followed by plating on MSRV, MAC, and HE agars. A total of 102 Salmonella-positive stools by DP, 85.3% (87/102) were recovered utilizing MSRV while recovery from XLD, MAC, and HE agars were 34.3% (35/102), 34.3% (35/102), and 29.4% (30/102) respectively. A total 299/1297 stools samples were Salmonella-positive on at least one plating medium after enrichment procedure were 77
Faecal bile acid excretion and intestinal transit time were studied in 18 children with inflammatory bowel disease in clinical remission and with normal stools: 16 with ulcerative colitis, two with Crohns colitis, mean age 14 years (range 10-17 years). Five healthy children, mean age 12.4 years (range 10-17 years), were studied as control subjects. Most patients were taking sulphasalazine, but none were taking steroids. Transit time was determined by carmine and did not differ between groups. Faeces were collected for 72 hours, and faecal water was prepared by centrifugation of faeces at 15,000 x g for two hours. Bile acids in total faeces and faecal water were studied using capillary gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Faecal excretion of total bile acids, unconjugated bile acids, and glycine and taurine conjugates were significantly increased in patients as was faecal water excretion of total bile acids, particularly the taurine conjugates and cholic and chenodeoxycholic acids. Community-acquired urinary tract infection (CA-UTI) could be caused by endogenous or exogenous routes. To show this relationship, we investigated molecular fingerprints and genotypes of paired Enterococcus faecalis isolated from the urine of symptomatic patients and their fecal samples. Out of the studied patients, 63 pairs of E. faecalis isolates were obtained simultaneously from their urine and feces samples. All the strains were sensitive to vancomycin, linezolid, nitrofurantoin, and daptomycin (MIC value: ≤ 4 µg/ml), while resistance to tetracycline (urine: 88.9%; stool: 76.2%) and minocycline (urine: 87.3%, stool: 71.4%) was detected in most of them. The most common detected virulence genes were included efbA, ace, and gelE. RAPD-PCR and PFGE analyses showed the same patterns of molecular fingerprints between paired of the isolates in 26.9% and 15.8% of the patients, respectively. Similarity of E. faecalis strains between the urine and feces samples confirmed the occurrence of endogenous

Our results indicate a steady decline in calprotectin concentration in the first 6 days after stool collection in samples kept at room temperature. A similar slope was seen in stool extracts kept at room temperature, while the stability of calprotectin was preserved in samples stored in a refrigerator at 4°C. We did not test the superiority of one ELISA kit over another. For that, we would have needed to perform a multitude of tests. The decline in calprotectin concentration over time was observed regardless of the ELISA kit used, which makes inadvertently smoothening of the curve unlikely.. Literature on calprotectin stability under various preservation conditions is scarce. A Swedish group observed a decline in calprotectin when stool samples were stored at room temperature for 7 days but claimed that the concentration remained unchanged in the first 3 days after collection.4 A Spanish group claimed that calprotectin remained stable in stool extracts stored at room temperature for 4 days,5 as ...

Taaffe, this woman doesnt look much younger than the gardener. She also comes with many good comments from her friends. The trash she threw around in her anger was trash she had already picked up. She did not run home and get her trash and bring it and throw it around. Since you nor anyone else, including me, that is commenting about this incident were there it might be a good idea to quit fanning these particular flames. Fighting fire with fire has never worked and there are always 2 sides of a story. The woman admitted to throwing HER dogs feces that she had picked up in her doggy bag at the man. So, therefore, she was picking up her dogs feces so the man had no business getting on to her for not picking up her dogs feces. If you take a moment to think, she could not have thrown a bag of feces at him if she hadnt picked it up in a bag. She admitted to throwing it and to being very frustrated and also that it was unfortunate that the bag hit him. If you go on facebook and search her name ...
Devon Herrick , NCPA. Slang words describing human feces are often used to denote products of poor quality or that have absolutely no value whatsoever. A product that is substandard is sometimes derisively referred to as crap - or worse.. Now, a company in Massachusetts is collecting fecal material into a stool bank, and to regulate feces selling the screened preparations to hospitals for $385 apiece.. The material is later injected into sick patients digestive tracts infected with Clostridium difficile. These are difficult-to-treat bacterial infections that kill an estimated 14,000 people annually.. The donated feces are obtained from healthy donors, who are paid $40 per donation. The average donation is screened and divided into four preparations, enough to treat four patients. In a clinical trial, the results from using donated fecal material were superior to using antibiotics.. Humans have a love/hate relationship with bacteria. We investigated the effect of a mixture of long-chain fructo-oligosaccharides, galacto-oligosaccharides and acidic oligosaccharides on the number and consistency of stools and on immune system biomarkers in 104 supplemented and non-supplemented subjects (aged 9-24 months) with acute diarrhea. Interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-1RA, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α and sIL-2R cytokine levels were determined. The significant decrease in number of stools and increase in stool consistency in the supplemented group was of little clinical relevance. The only significant change in pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines was decreased TNF-α levels in the supplemented group. Prebiotic supplementation during acute diarrhea episodes did not influence the clinical course.

Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an important human pathogen of worldwide importance that has been implicated in several outbreaks, and its antibiotic resistance is increasing (1, 2). The indiscriminate use of antibiotics results in the emergence of resistant bacterial strains (3), and the development of antibiotic resistance highlights the need for alternative strategies to combat pathogenic bacteria. Phages can be used as biocontrol agents against antibiotic-resistant bacteria (4).. We report the characterization of the complete genome sequence of the E. coli O157:H7 phage phiJLA23. This phage was isolated from a farm animal feces sample from the Culiacan Valley, Mexico, and showed high lytic activity on various strains of E. coli O157. To our knowledge, this is the first report of genomic sequencing of a coliphage isolated in Mexico. The phage DNA was isolated from purified phage particles by the phenol-chloroform method described by Sambrook and Russell (5) and was sequenced using the GS Junior ...
bowel lavage (500mL sennoside a+b calcium and 2L water) for colonoscopy preparation on the day before FMT. The median amount of 120 to 150g donor feces was used for FMT preparation. Donors were instructed to collect feces in a small container and to bring it to the hospital on the day of the scheduled transplant. Thus, fresh stool material was used in this study. A total of 500mL extracted fecal suspension was prepared with 500mL 0.9% NaCl using the conventional blender and divided into 50mL syringes. Filtered fecal microbiota suspension was administered into the 30 to 40cm proximal of terminal ileum of recipients through endoscopic infusion catheter inserted into the colonoscopy under anesthesia. Loperamide was given to all patients to decrease intestinal transit time and to create accurate time for colonization of donor intestinal flora 3 hours before FMT ...

A fecal analysis is a test that examines your pets stool to detect intestinal parasites, including worms (hookworms, roundworms, whipworms) and other organisms (coccidia, Giardia). It can also detect other abnormalities, such as increased numbers of bacteria in the stool. If your pet develops diarrhea, vomiting, or weight loss (clinical signs frequently associated with parasites), your veterinarian may want to perform a fecal analysis to help determine if parasites are part of the problem. However, some pets have intestinal parasites without any obvious clinical signs, so your veterinarian may recommend performing a fecal analysis during your pets regular wellness examination visits.. There is increased interest in the potential protective role of dietary Ca in the development of metabolic disorders related to the metabolic syndrome. Ca-induced intestinal precipitation of fatty acids and bile acids as well as systemic metabolic effects of Ca on adipose tissue is proposed to play a causal role. In this experiment, we have studied all these aspects to validate the suggested protective effect of Ca supplementation, independent of other dietary changes, on the development of diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance. In our diet intervention study, C57BL/6J mice were fed high-fat diets differing in Ca concentrations (50 v. 150 mmol/kg). Faecal excretion analyses showed an elevated precipitation of intestinal fatty acids (2·3-fold; P , 0·01) and bile acids (2-fold; P , 0·01) on the high-Ca diet. However, this only led to a slight reduction in fat absorption (from 98 to 95 %; P , 0·01), mainly in the distal small intestine as indicated by gene expression changes. We found no ...
Loose stools is common to all age groups from children to old age. It is frequent in smaller children who are exposed to lot of micro -organisms during play and their habit of keeping fingers in mouth . Recently, I met my friend with her 3 year old son. Her son had loose stools since 2 days but she was giving milk to the child which would increase the frequency of loose stools.
I collected 147 common musk turtles from Spring Lake, San Marcos, Hays County, Texas between April 2008 and February 2009, to examine their dietary habits based on fecal analysis. I collected 70 female and 77 male turtles from lentic and lotic areas of the lake during spring, summer, fall and winter. After voiding their digestive tract contents all turtles were returned to the point of capture. Fecal matter was sorted into five component categories: mollusks, crayfish, insects, plant matter, and other. Five items per category per sample were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, resulting in the identification of 6 types of mollusks, 1 crayfish, 13 insects, 12 plants, and 4 additional taxa. After identification samples were dried and weighed. Mollusk material was the most abundant component of fecal material, followed by crayfish. I performed 3-way ANOVA tests of fecal component categories across three independent variables: habitat, gender and season. The percent weight of ...

N2 - Freezing stool samples prior to DNA extraction and downstream analysis is widely used in metagenomic studies of the human microbiota but may affect the inferred community composition. In this study, DNA was extracted either directly or following freeze storage of three homogenized human fecal samples using three different extraction methods. No consistent differences were observed in DNA yields between extractions on fresh and frozen samples; however, differences were observed between extraction methods. Quantitative PCRanalysis was subsequently performed on all DNA samples using six different primer pairs targeting 16S rRNA genes of significant bacterial groups, and the community composition was evaluated by comparing specific ratios of the ...

Immunoreactive corticosterone and corticosterone metabolites (ICCM) were quantified in excreta of permanently single housed (n=10) and permanently pair housed (n=20) roosters. The pair housed roosters were separated and single housed, and ICCM were quantified in the droppings before and during 15 days after separation. There was no statistically significant difference in ICCM excretion in the droppings between the permanently single or pair housed roosters. After separation, however, the previously pair housed roosters showed a significantly transient elevated excretion of ICCM in droppings the second day after separation indicating that the separation and relocation is associated with an activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The excretion of ICCM in droppings was not correlated to the concentration of ICCM in droppings. It is thus important that excretion of ICCM be expressed as amount excreted per time unit since the total excretion is dependant on both concentration of ICCM ...

Salmonella causes a million cases of food poisoning each year and is the result of fecal matter contamination in chicken processing plants. Just handling chicken can lead to exposure to antibiotic resistant E. coli, which may result in bladder infections in women. Listeria is the third most common bacterial infection related to food and is found commonly in the meat supply. The phosphorus preservatives injected into poultry may not just be an arterial toxin, but may also increase the growth of Campylobacter bacteria. In 200 pork samples, more than 2/3 were contaminated with antibiotic resistant Yersinia. A problem with fecal matter is that it can become backed up in the colon, so keeping the colon cleansed is a major part of keeping it healthy, and gaining the benefits of a healthy colon for the rest of the body. Imagine if you will the walls of the colon lined with aging and deteriorating fecal matter. Not a pleasant thought, but a necessary one. This fecal matter contains bacteria which multiply. They in turn release toxins into the body. These toxins are poisons that can make you sick. This results in a condition called spastic colon, or irritated bowel syndrome. This irritated bowel syndrome can result in constipation, diarrhea, headache, body ache, water retention, bloating, cramping and abdominal pain and discomfort. These symptoms can be alleviated through proper cleansing of the colon. Proper colon cleansing is done through a healthy diet, high in fiber, low in fact, containing healthy foods like whole grain bread, whole grain pasta, brown rice, green leafy vegetables like spinach and ...

As often happens in our Wheat Belly conversations, we end up talking about bowel health. After all, our unwitting bowels are the primary means through which we (used to) ingest this thing that annoys, erodes, irritates, and generally wreaks havoc on our health. The gastrointestinal tract, probably more than any other organ system, is the unhappy recipient of most of wheats destructive properties. The composition of your bowel flora, the little bacterial critters populating your gastrointestinal tract and outnumbering the number of cells in the rest of your body (yes: you are mostly a bacterial organism, judging by numbers! over 2 pounds in total), are increasingly appearing to be major players in overall health. Witness, for instance, this talk of fecal transplants in which the bowel flora/stool of a slender animal is transplanted into the intestinal tract of an overweight animal-and the overweight animal loses weight. Fecal bacteriotherapy may, in fact, be entering mainstream treatment for ...
