Objective. Various cytokines have been implicated in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and it is known that elevations in multiple cytokines occur prior to disease onset. The objective of our study is to determine whether the cytokine profile in unaffected first-degree relatives (FDR) of patients with RA is distinct from healthy controls. Methods. The sera of patients with RA, their unaffected FDR, and healthy controls were measured for 27 cytokines using a luminex-based multiplexed immunoassay. Subjects were also tested for rheumatoid factor and 6 different anticitrullinated protein/peptide antibodies (ACPA). Discriminant analysis was performed to define the cytokine profile of the 3 study groups. Results. Fourteen patients with RA, 37 unaffected FDR, and 27 healthy controls were enrolled. The attainment of democracy in South Africa brought many previously disadvantaged families new hope and promise for enhanced entry to higher education. However, as these opportunities continue to grow, this research study asked whether these students are ready to make effective use of their expanded prospects. This qualitative study was informed by the Interactive Model of Career Decision-Making. It focused on family and community influences in tertiary educational career decision-making with special reference to black South African students' context of historical disadvantage. Family and community variables, such as socio-economic status, culture, parental influence, family composition and support, were investigated. Thematic analysis indicated strong links between family socio-economic status and student career decisions. Familial support further emerged as an important factor when students make career decisions.

Based on examples drawn from tape recordings of two middle-class, dual-career White couples with children who audiotaped their own interactions for a week, I examined how family members mediate interpersonal interaction by speaking as, to, or about pet dogs who are present in the interaction. The aim of this study was to test whether personality traits of impulsivity, sensitivity to punishment and reward, and sensation seeking were associated with adults with ADHD and to test whether these measured traits were aspects of the clinical phenotype or instead predisposing personality risk factors for ADHD. Our results suggest that high impulsivity traits, hypersensitivity to reward and susceptibility to boredom are part of the clinical phenotype of adults with ADHD, rather than personality traits harbouring an increased risk for the disorder, as unaffected first-degree relatives did not show a similar pattern of traits. Moreover, results also show that in this study adults with ADHD are not more indifferent to punishment or more sensation seekers than their relatives and controls. Aim: To assess the impact of a purpose-built, short stay paediatric ambulatory care unit (PACU) on the patient journey and perceptions of parents, staff and referrers. Methods: Multi-method evaluation, including a parent survey (n=104), patient journey mapping (n=10), staff interviews (n=10), a referrer survey (n=16), routine activity analysis, and a comparison with the A&E service (A&E parent survey: n=41). Results: Almost all parents attending PACU (94%) were satisfied with the service and significantly more likely to feel very satisfied than parents attending A&E (PACU: 51%; A&E: 31%; p=0.03). Two hundred eighty-two usable questionnaires were completed by mothers who attended elementary school parent-teacher meetings in a suburban city in North Texas. The questionnaire gathered data about family demographics, family evening meal patterns, and factors affecting meal management decisions.
