We returned to the ship for a quick lunch while Plancius sailed to our next landing site at Grave Cove. Commersons dolphins came alongside the ship and frolicked in the waves by the gangway as we ate. After a short Zodiac ride we arrived at Grave Cove, where small colonies of Gentoo penguins and a couple of Magellanic penguins were waiting for us on the beach. After a wet landing in crystal clear water we met Marie-Paul, a Falklands resident who, with her partner, owns Grave Cove and the surrounding area. Marie-Paul kindly led us on a short walk across open grassy fields to a large Gentoo penguin colony on the other side of the island - the largest Gentoo colony in the Falkland Islands. The colony extended all the way to the beach, and this is where most of us spent the rest of the afternoon. The beach was incredibly exposed and atmospheric, with sea salt in the air and a breeze whipping whitecaps off the swell. Here we each found a spot to be still and watch or photograph the penguins
The economy was formerly based on agriculture, mainly sheep farming, but today fishing contributes the bulk of economic activity. In 1987, the government began selling fishing licenses to foreign trawlers operating within the Falkland Islands exclusive fishing zone. These license fees total more than $40 million per year, which help support the islands health, education, and welfare system. Squid accounts for 75% of the fish taken. Dairy farming supports domestic consumption; crops furnish winter fodder. Exports feature shipments of high-grade wool to the UK and the sale of postage stamps and coins. The islands are now self-financing except for defense. The British Geological Survey announced a 200-mile oil exploration zone around the islands in 1993, and early seismic surveys suggest substantial reserves capable of producing 500,000 barrels per day; to date, no exploitable site has been identified. An agreement between Argentina and the UK in 1995 seeks to defuse licensing and sovereignty ...
Our first landing of the day, and indeed of the trip, was Carcass Island, owned and operated by Rob and Lorraine McGill. The island sits in the northwest of the Falkland Islands Archipelago. Getting off the ship proved a little challenging as there was a big swell at the gangway bouncing the zodiacs up and down. Yet we all mastered our first attempts of getting into the zodiacs for the shuttle ride ashore. The staff told us that this would be great training for the destinations ahead. Most of us decided to head off on a long hike from Dyke Bay to Leopard Beach and then along to the settlement, while the rest of us were transported straight to the settlement in order to explore the surroundings at a more leisurely pace.

In 1823, the Buenos Aires government granted land on East Falkland to Jorge Pacheco, a businessman from Buenos Aires who owed money to the merchant Luis Vernet.[27] A first expedition travelled to the islands the following year, arriving on the East Falkland on 2 February 1824. This was deemed as "a failure" by author Mary Cawkell:[7]:31 "A week after arrival in February 1824, Areguati sent a despairing letter to Pacheco."[11]:47 Its leader was Pablo Areguatí, who brought with him 25 gauchos. Ten days later Areguatí wrote that the colony was perishing because the horses they had brought were too weak to be used, thus they could not capture wild cattle and their only other means of subsistence was wild rabbits. On 7 June, Areguatí left the islands, taking with him 17 gauchos. On 24 July, the remaining eight gauchos were rescued by the Susannah Anne, a British sealer. After the failure, Pacheco agreed to sell his share[of what?] to Vernet.[27]. A second attempt, in 1826, sanctioned by the ...

Eudyptes chrysolophus breeds in at least 258 colonies at c. 55 breeding sites (Crossin et al. 2013), including southern Chile, the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), South Georgia (Georgia del Sur) and the South Sandwich Islands (Islas Sandwich del Sur), the South Orkney and South Shetland Islands, Bouvet Island (to Norway), Prince Edward and Marion Islands (South Africa), Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands (French Southern Territories), Heard and McDonald Islands (to Australia) and very locally on the Antarctic Peninsula.. Important populations exist at Isles Crozet (2.2 million pairs, including 1 million on Iles des Pingouins), Kerguelen (1.8 million pairs), Heard Island (1 million pairs), South Georgia (1 million pairs) and Marion Island (290,000 pairs). The population in the Patagonian Shelf region is estimated at 25,000 breeding pairs (Oehler et al. 2008, Kirkwood et al. 2007, Crossin et al. 2013). The Falkland Islands (Malvinas) population is estimated at no more than 1000 individuals (Stanworth ...

In 1978, the company merged with the Charringtons Coke distribution company and with this they acquired the Falkland Islands Company. From 1984 to 1989 Eric Varley,[7] the ex-Labour cabinet minister was company chairman. In 1986, the group acquired Hargreaves Fuel distribution services. This marked the zenith of the companys fortunes. The group was now at its most diverse and widespread, owning subsidiaries that were totally unrelated to its core business. These included sheep farming, Dormobile camper vans, Builders merchants, Pyrometer Instrument manufacturers, vehicle sales and many others as well as industrial land across the country. From 1987 to 1991, the company sponsored Chesterfield F.C. In 1989, the company was taken over by Anglo United,[8] From 1990 to 1992, the company sponsored world class snooker tournaments In 1997, Falkland Islands Holdings subsidiary was floated off and became an independent company again.[9] The solid fuel side of the business began to shrink in the 1980s. ...
Although the maned wolf displays many fox-like characteristics, it is not closely related to foxes. It lacks the elliptical pupils found distinctively in foxes. The maned wolfs evolutionary relationship to the other members of the canid family makes it a unique animal. Electrophoretic studies did not link Chrysocyon with any of the other living canids studied. One conclusion of this study is that the maned wolf is the only species among the large South American canids that survived the late Pleistocene extinction. Fossils of the maned wolf from the Holocene and the late Pleistocene have been excavated from the Brazilian Highlands.[7]. A 2003 study on the brain anatomy of several canids placed the maned wolf together with the Falkland Islands wolf and with pseudo-foxes of the genus Pseudalopex.[8] One study based on DNA evidence showed that the extinct genus Dusicyon, comprising the Falkland Islands wolf and its mainland relative, was the most closely related species to the maned wolf in ...

Darwins zorro is a South American canid (member of the dog family) often called "Darwins fox", although it is more closely related, and shares more of a resemblance, to wolves. It bears the birthday boys name due to him describing the animals remarkable tameness on his visit to Chile on the Voyage of the Beagle; he was able to strike it dead with a geological hammer as it approached him. For most of the last two centuries, the species was treated as a subspecies of the more widespread grey zorro, or South American grey fox (L. griseus), but in the light of its clear morphological and molecular differences, the Darwins zorro was named as a species in its own right. Incidentally, the genus name Lycalopex is often referred to as Pseudalopex (although the former is the more senior name, thus it gets priority), and even Dusicyon, which is usually reserved for the now extinct Falkland zorro (D. australis), also known as the warrah or Falkland Island wolf. Darwins zorro is critically endangered, ...
The Falkland Islands Company owes its origins to a contract signed by Alexander Ross Lafone in 1846 for the right to kill and tame wild cattle in the Southern part of East Falkland. He and his brother set up business as a joint stock company in 1851 which received its Royal Charter in 1852. The ...
Cale performs the Falkland Island Suite in Holland and we get to see the bored reaction of some Dutch music critics. They tell us that Cale is over the hill. Thus encouraged, we follow Cale to Moscow where he and Eno will make a studio recording for the orchestral part to Falkland. Along the way we meet a character named Rodin, a Russian musician affected by somatomegaly or some other form of gigantism and who plays the double bass. The guys hands are so big it looks more like hes playing a cello. It was difficult for me to tell if he was once a good player that has slipped or he is just so unique that hes off in a zone by himself. Nevertheless, both Cale and Eno are impressed enough to write a chart just for him and then they spend considerable time trying to get something out of Rodin they can use on the album. Then its on to Wales where we get off-task again while Cale helps his aged mother sell the family home. Eventually we come around to Cale working with the Llandaff Cathedral School ...

The countrys population and culture were heavily shaped by immigrants from throughout Europe, with Italy and Spain providing the largest percentage of newcomers from 1860 to 1930. Up until about the mid-20th century, much of Argentinas history was dominated by periods of internal political conflict between Federalists and Unitarians and between civilian and military factions. After World War II, an era of Peronist populism and direct and indirect military interference in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976. Anti-British sentiment is prejudice, fear or hatred against the British Government, the culture or the people of the United Kingdom, or its Overseas territories usually because of British Imperial past. Anti-British feeling in Argentina stems mainly from the Falkland Islands dispute and the Falklands War in 1982 with the United Kingdom. Due to this, anti-British and anti-NATO protests and acts of vandalism do erupt. In the Indian independence movement, this sentiment was common. Anti-British sentiment, sometimes (incorrectly) described as Anglophobia, has been described as "deeply entrenched in Iranian culture", and reported to be increasingly prevalent in Iran. In July 2009, an adviser to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called Britain "worse than America" for its alleged interference in Irans post-election affairs. In the first half of the 20th century, the British Empire exerted political influence over Iran (Persia) in order to control the profits from the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. As a result, ...
This is the first time that such a wide-ranging study, in terms of geography and bird species, has been carried out in the Southern Ocean, which shows reasonably solid evidence of reverse zoonosis in the Antarctic," study author Jacob González-Solís, a researcher in the Department of Zoology and Biological Anthropology at the University of Barcelona, wrote in an email.. Birds including penguins, brown skuas, southern giant petrels and kelp gulls were found to have picked up bacteria such as campylobacter and salmonella, according to the study, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment.. The team took samples of feces from more than 600 adult seabirds in four locations - Livingston Island, Marion Island, Gough Island and the Falkland Islands - between 2008 and 2011, with three findings suggesting reverse zoonosis.. Samples showed campylobacter jejuni, a common cause of food poisoning in the United States and Europe, including genotypes that had rarely or never been found in wild ...

The islands lie approximately 1,000 km east of the Falkland Islands and have been under British administration since 1908 except for a brief period in 1982 when Argentina occupied them. Grytviken, on South Georgia, was a 19th and early 20th century whaling station. The famed explorer Ernest SHACKLETON stopped there in 1914 en route to his ill-fated attempt to cross Antarctica on foot. He returned some 20 months later with a few companions in a small boat and arranged a successful rescue for the rest of his crew, stranded off the Antarctic Peninsula. He died in 1922 on a subsequent expedition and is buried in Grytviken. Today, the station houses scientists from the British Antarctic Survey. The islands have large bird and seal populations and, recognizing the importance of preserving the marine stocks in adjacent waters, the UK, in 1993, extended the exclusive fishing zone from 12 NM to 200 NM around each island ...

... australis was at one point the only mammal species on the Falkland Islands. These dogs fed on the birds that lived there, and there is some controversy on how they managed to be the only mammals on the islands. They may have reached the islands several thousand years ago along with the first human inhabitants, but they may have also crossed over during the last Ice Age when freezing way have created an ice bridge. Either way, they are are distinct from any other living canine-- their closest living relatives are the Maned Wolves, but they diverged some 6 million years ago ...
This bird has a wider range than the species of the foregoing and closely allied genus. It is common near Port Famine in Tierra del Fuego, and on the west coast in the thickly wooded islets of the Chonos Archipelago. I was assured by an intelligent collector that this bird is met with, though rarely, in central Chile; and Mr. Gould informs me, that he has received specimens from that country. It has found its way over to the Falkland Islands, where, instead of inhabiting forests, it frequents the coarse herbage and low bushes, which in most parts conceal the peaty surface of that island. In general appearance the Scytalopus fuscus might at first be mistaken for a Troglodytes, but in habits it is closely allied to the several species of Pteroptochos. In a skulking manner, with its little tail erect, it hops about the most entangled parts of the forests of Tierra del Fuego; but when near the outskirts, it every now and then pops out, and then quickly back again. It utters many loud and strange ...
Antarctic plankton community respiration rates were determined from in vitro changes in dissolved oxygen. Oxygen consumption rates, measured at in situ temperatures between 0 and 6°C, were found to lie in the range 0.3-3.7 μmol O2 l-1 per 24 h. Water samples were collected between East Falkland Island and South Georgia, South Atlantic Ocean, and incubated shipboard in the dark at up to 36 temperatures between -2 and 14-C. A respiration rate at each temperature was then determined and used to calculate the temperature coefficient (Q10) of Antarctic planktonic community respiration from the Arrhenius equation. Fourteen Q0 values lay in the range 1-3, with four further values ,5. This range of temperature coefficient values for community respiration is comparable to the published range of values for plankton photosynthesis. Frequency distributions of temperature coefficients for the two processes show similar modal Q105 of 2-3. Thus, this study does not lend support to the hypothesis of a ...

The History of the Romney. The Romney traces its beginning to the marshy area of Kent in England. Its origin lies with the old, established dual purpose Romney Marsh breed which was improved with Leicester blood in the nineteenth century. Often swept with harsh winds and heavy rainfall, the Kent landscape is abundant with lush forage.. These geographic and climatic conditions have led to the development of some specific characteristics in the Romney breed. These traits include hooves that are resistant to foot rot and fleeces that remain healthy in harsh weather. Due to the similar land topography and weather conditions, the Romney breed made an easy transition to New Zealand and the Falkland Islands, where it became quickly established and still remains the predominant breed.. In 1904, William Riddell and Sons of Monmouth, Oregon, imported the first Romneys to North America, where their popularity increased rapidly. The American Romney Breeders Association was founded in 1912 by Joe Wing, a ...

This morning, president Obama told the graduating class of the Air Force Academy in Colorado that "theres a new confindence in our [American] leadership around the world." That set me to wondering where those newly confident people are. Are they in Afghanistan where Obama has set a withdrawal schedule slow enough to guarantee hundreds, if not thousands, of additional American dead and wounded, while at the same time making that schedule quick enough to also guarantee that we will not accomplish the goal of destroying the Taliban? Maybe the newly confident folks are in Syria where nearly 15,000 have died at the hands of the Assad regime while American "leadership" has consisted of a few statements here and there, a few sanctions which do not really affect the Syrians all that much, and not much else. Possibly the newly confident folks are the citizens of the Falkland Islands who have voted by a margin greater than 95% to remain part of Britain only to watch Obama recognize the potential validity ...
