En coup de sabre is a type of linear scleroderma characterized by a linear band of atrophy and a furrow in the skin that occurs in the frontal or frontoparietal scalp. Multiple lesions of en coup de sabre may coexist in a single patient, with one report suggesting that the lesions followed Blaschko lines . Unlike skin in localized morphea, skin in linear scleroderma may be fixed to underlying tissue. Calcinosis may rarely occur. Cutaneous changes accompanying the facial hemiatrophy associated with the Parry-Romberg syndrome may be similar to those found in en coup de sabre . Serologic abnormalities may include anti-nuclear antibodies, anti-single-stranded DNA antibodies, and rheumatoid factor. Eosinophilia may be present and may correlate with disease activity. A polyclonal IgG and IgM hypergammaglobulinemia may also be present and is found more often with severe cases and with clinical progression ...

Parry-Romberg Syndrome (PRS) is an uncommon disorder characterized by a slowly and acquired progressive atrophy involving skin, soft tissue, cartilage, and bony structures. Accompanying atrophies of the other parts of the body are rarely reported. We report an extremely unusual case with PRS associated with contralateral lower extremity atrophy.
In 1933, DDMS was first described in a case series by Dyke, Davidoff and Mason. The condition was described as skull radiographic changes resulting from cerebral hemiatrophy [1]. Cerebral hemiatrophy in early life can result in compensatory ipsilateral changes characterised by calvarian thickening, hyper-pneumatisation of the sinuses and elevation of the orbit. Clinically, affected patients present in early childhood with contralateral hemiparesis, facial asymmetry, seizure and mental retardation ...
Seminal description was made by Klawans in 1981 (Neurology) with hemiatrophy beginning in childhood and hemiParkinsons beginning in early adulthood (before 45). The hemiatrophy may be unnoticed. Symptoms usually begin ipsilateral to the hemiplegia but may spread to the other side. The condition may progress slowly and respond variably to levodopa. This series of 30 patients is the largest to date published. Patients may present initially with dystonia, that is often action induced and may involve the leg or arm only, induced by walking, running, or writing. There was no right or left sided predominance. Patients could present however, with early morning dystonia, tremor, bradykinesia, or gait imbalance. Patients often had scapular winging, raised shoulder , unequal leg length, brisk reflexes and extensor plantars. Occassionally patients had problems in pregnancy or early development especially walking. Scoliosis was common. MRI findings include asymmetric lateral ventricles, volume loss, ...
Background: Mixed vascular nevus (or nevus vascularis mixtus) represents an admixture of cutaneous vascular malformations of the telangiectatic type and angiospastic spots of nevus anemicus. It can occur as an purely cutaneous trait or as a hallmark of a neurocutaneous phenotype (mixed vascular nevus syndrome) characterised by the combination of: (I) paired vascular (telangiectatic and anemic) twin nevi and brain abnormalities of the Dyke-Davidoff-Masson type (i.e., crossed cerebral/cerebellar hemiatrophy with hypoplasia of the ipsilateral cerebral vessels and homolateral hypertrophy of the skull and sinuses (hyperpneumatisation) with contralateral hemispheric hypertrophy); or (II) paired vascular twin nevi and brain malformations of the Dyke-Davidoff-Masson type in association with systemic abnormalities consisting in facial asymmetry, skeletal anomalies (i.e., Legg-Calvé-Perthes-like disease) and disorders of autoimmunity (i.e., diabetes, thyroiditis). In 2014, Happle proposed to name the ...

N2 - The process of aging is the result of subcutaneous loss of volume, in addition to vertical tissue descent. Surgeons are therefore emphasizing soft tissue augmentation to achieve a natural, rejuvenated appearance in patients. Autologous fat grafting is now a commonly performed aesthetic procedure. Autologous fat grafting is a challenging procedure, due to the fragile characteristic of adipose tissue. Viability of transplanted fat is a main consideration when fat grafting is performed. Poor fat viability produces an inadequate result and thus can be considered as a complication of this procedure. Many studies have demonstrated that fat longevity is dependent upon handling and preparation of fat. This article outlines the history of autologous fat grafting. The technique of fat grafting is described, along with review of the ...

Case description: A 59 year old female with acute myeloid leukemia M7 variant presented with one week of progressive facial, head, and neck lesions preceded by a small right thigh macular lesion that had developed into a larger papulo-pustular lesion. Subsequently, a number of similar papular lesions erupted across her forehead and grew into painful nodulo-pustular lesions. Associated right sided periorbital edema prompted her hospitalization. She has a history of recurrent upper respiratory infections, pulmonary aspergillosis, staphylococcus epidermidis vertebral osteomyelitis, diabetes mellitus, and genital herpes. For AML, she had received two remission induction cycles of idarubicin/cytarabine, then high dose ara-C five months prior to admission. For persistent neutropenia, she required daily granulocyte-colony stimulating factor. Other medications included carvedilol, lisinopril, gabapentin, lorazepam, oxycodone, and valacyclovir. Admission vital signs were unremarkable. Examination revealed

The purpose of this study is to analyze the co-existence effect of 30 wt.% TCP-BG phases on degradation and precipitation behaviors of PLLA based composite scaffold in biological media. First, phase separation method was used to synthesize of the pure PLLA and the trinary composite scaffolds, and second they were immersed in SBF solution for 45 days. Subsequently, the degradation and precipitation characteristic were investigated by analyzing of pH value and weight changes of the immersed samples, the ability of biological products formation and the change of relative molecular weight of PLLA matrix as function of the degradation time ...
One month following graft injection, no significant difference was noted between M2-supplemented (105±7.0 mm3) and control graft volumes (72±22 mm3). By three months post-injection, M2-supplemented grafts remained stable while controls experienced further volume loss (103±8 mm3 vs. 39.4±15 mm3, p=0.015). Presence of M2 macrophages in the supplemented grafts was confirmed by flow cytometry. M2-supplemented grafts demonstrated a 157% increase in vascular density compared to controls (p,0.05). Induction of adipogenic C/EBPα gene expression was observed when M2 supernatants were added to SVF containing ASC ...

Scientific, peer-reviewed Dermatology article, indexed with MEDLINE/PubMed: Treatment Options in Facial and Nonfacial Volumization: An Introduction to Poly-L-Lactic Acid : Restoring Facial Volume: The Growing Impact of Poly-L-Lactic Acid Soft tissue augmentation is an important option in aesthetic enhancement and continues to grow in popularity for a number of reasons, including its minimally invasive nature and ability to directly nullify volume loss associated with facial ageing. Cosmetic agents that replace collagen are effective tools for addressing volume loss, and among these poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) carries great potential, acting to volumize soft tissue in a gradual, progressive, and predictable manner, and providing natural-looking restoration of lost facial volume. In the considerable time that has passed since the introduction of PLLA for soft tissue augmentation, methodology and patient selection has improved, leading to far fewer adverse events such as nodules or papules and better

Background. The effectiveness of long-term results for correction of facial rhytides with single or multiple autologous fat transplants remains controversial. Objective. This study is a retrospective review of short- and long-term results for 116 patients who underwent multiple autologous fat grafting sessions into the nasolabial and melolabial (lateral oral commissure) fold, and in some cases additional sites such as lips and glabella. Methods. Criteria for inclusion into the study included at least two treatment sessions and at least a 12-month follow-up evaluation after the last treatment received. A 14-gauge needle cannula was used to aspirate the donor fat and to inject the fat grafts. Results. For the nasolabial and melolabial folds, short-term results at 3,4 months were uniformly excellent. Gradual correction loss was noted between 5 and 8 months, with 25% of patients still rated as excellent and 40% as good. Most patients continued to show correction loss between 9 and 14 months. Only ...
N-acetylcysteine resulted in improved fat graft retention, with 46% take in NAC animals, compared to 17% in controls (p=0.027) (Figure 1). Explanted grafts from the NAC group were significantly larger (46 vs. 8 milligrams, p,0.01) and had a 133% higher mean adipocyte density on histology (p,0.0001) than controls (Figure 2). No increase in vascularity was observed on histology. FACS analysis demonstrated that NAC protected ADSCs from oxidative stress in a dose-dependent manner. Combined exposure to both NAC and hydrogen peroxide led to a 200-fold increase in ADSC proliferation, significantly higher than with either agent alone. NAC significantly decreased the differentiation of pre-adipocyte cells into adipocytes compared to control (p,0.05 ...

The transfer of autologous tissues is not a new concept but just another method as we have seen with many types of flaps using various combinations of muscle, fat and skin have been well documented. Tissue flaps come from many different locations, and are used in many different ways to accomplish the desired results. Flaps have their own blood supply, they are more resilient than skin grafts, and usually produce much better results from a cosmetic standpoint because they can provide a better match for skin tone and texture. Skin flaps are also a better choice when tissue bulk is needed to fill contour defects. The obvious advantage is to use autologus tissue versus xenografts and allografts; each having known risks of rejection and adverse events.. The literature has unequivocally demonstrated that clinical fat grafting in buttocks (a similar weight-bearing anatomic region) can be performed safely and effectively with retention rates approximating 75% up to 2 years and beyond (23-25). However, the latest developments in the procedure techniques and a new perspective on the applications of Fat Transfer, has made it easier to understand as a process and, as a result, started to capture the attention of the public and previous pessimists of the cosmetic industry, who were not keen on synthetic prostheses or volumising materials. A whole new dimension to explore. "Autologous" Fat Transfer means, very simply, moving "your own" Fat, from one location to another, in your body (its a different concept from liposuction, where your fat is ...

A days worth of gray flannel suits made him thank God for the strangely dressed woman-at first hed thought she was a guy-who threw a worn duffel bag into his welcoming trunk. As she settled into the back seat and mumbled a Cambridge address, he craned his head to get a good look at her. Where you comin from? Janice knew she looked peculiar enough to warrant speculation.
