The costs of eye-tracking technologies steadily decrease. This allows research institutions to obtain multiple eye-tracking devices. Already, several multiple eye-tracker laboratories have been established. Researchers begin to recognize the subfield of group eye-tracking. In comparison to the single-participant eye-tracking, group eye-tracking brings new technical and methodological challenges. Solutions to these challenges are far from being established within the research community. In this paper, we present the Group Studies system, which manages the infrastructure of the group eye-tracking laboratory at the User Experience and Interaction Research Center (UXI) at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. We discuss the functional and architectural characteristics of the system. Furthermore, we illustrate our infrastructure with one of our past studies. With this paper, we also publish the source code and the documentation of our system to be re-used ...

The eye movements of 24 children and 24 adults were monitored to compare how they read sentences containing plausible, implausible, and anomalous thematic relations. In the implausible condition the incongruity occurred due to the incompatibility of two objects involved in the event denoted by the main verb. In the anomalous condition the direct object of the verb was not a possible verb argument. Adults exhibited immediate disruption with the anomalous sentences as compared to the implausible sentences as indexed by longer gaze durations on the target word. Children exhibited the same pattern of effects as adults as far as the anomalous sentences were concerned, but exhibited delayed effects of implausibility. These data indicate that while children and adults are alike in their basic thematic assignment processes during reading, children may be delayed in the efficiency with which they are able to integrate pragmatic and real-world knowledge into their discourse representation.. ...

What makes the female breast attractive? The answer is subjective, of course. But studies using eye-tracking technology are providing a more objective basis for determining which breast areas are most attractive -- which may help to improve the outcomes of surgery, reports the December issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Notes and hyperlinks from day 4, the last day of ComBio 2007. On the whole, I found ComBio rather disappointing this year. It seemed much smaller than last year with far less of interest to me. The other bit of me-related news that came out of San Diego Comic Con was that SCALPED is ending with issue #60. Still feels weird to see it finally spelled out so definitely, but this has actually been the plan for quite a while now. This was my choice. We were not canceled or forced into an ending. The series will be ending just the way Ive always imagined it ending. There are a couple of smaller stories I always thought I might get to which I ultimately wont, but those were set aside in the interest of giving the series as solid a finish as possible. There wont be any more stand-alone issues. Instead well have two final big arcs to bring everything home, with Guera drawing every issue. Expect a death or two and hopefully at least a couple of surprises. And expect everyone to get the ending theyve got coming to them, good or bad. In many ways, the entire story of SCALPED will ultimately be about what happens in these last ten issues. Thanks again to everybody whos stuck with us this ...

2020 Background: Self-disgust has been associated with loneliness and mental health difficulties in clinical and non-clinical populations, but there is limited research on the role of self-disgust in loneliness and mental health outcomes in older adults. Methods: In Study 1 (N = 102; M age = 68.4 years, SD = 10.9, 68% females) we used a cross-sectional survey to explore the association between loneliness, self-disgust and mental health outcomes. In Study 2 (N = 80; M age = 68.8 years, SD = 11.4, 57% females) we used eye-tracking to investigate attentional vigilance, maintenance and avoidance in individuals with high (vs. low) self-disgust. Results: In study 1 we found that self-disgust mediated the associations of loneliness with anxiety and depressive symptoms, and in study 2 it was demonstrated that older adults with high (vs. low) self-disgust displayed attentional avoidance to their own faces, compared to the faces of unknown others, a process that may perpetuate loneliness. Limitations: The ...
The qualifications and skills obtained during master programs often hardly prepare students to conduct eye-tracking studies, to avoid potential pitfalls when using the eye-tracking equipment and to analyze the complex eye-tracking datasets. Especially in the beginning of a PhD project these challenges appear to be overwhelming. PhD students completing the course will gain an overview of research in the field of bottom-up and top-down attentional process and search in decision-making. We will give an overview on latest developments in the field, including learning and contextual biases in decision sequences and the evaluation of decision theories. From a practical perspective PhD students will get insight in the process of setting up eye-tracking experiments, conducting a first empirical study on their own and analyzing an eye-tracking dataset. PhD students will have the opportunity to use remote eye-tracking devices together with their own laptops and use the provided software to analyze their ...

Considering eye-fixation behavior is standard in reading research to investigate underlying cognitive processes. However, in numerical cognition research eye-tracking is used less often and less systematically. Nevertheless, we identified over 40 studies on this topic from the last 40 years with an increase of eye-tracking studies on numerical cognition during the last decade. Here, we review and discuss these empirical studies to evaluate the added value of eye-tracking for the investigation of number processing. Our literature review revealed that the way eye-fixation behavior is considered in numerical cognition research ranges from investigating basic perceptual aspects of processing non-symbolic and symbolic numbers, over assessing the common representational space of numbers and space, to evaluating the influence of characteristics of the base-10 place-value structure of Arabic numbers and executive control on number processing. Apart from basic results such as reading times of numbers ...
Eye-tracking aims to determine where one directs ones gaze, or, put simply, it where one looks (for instance, on a computer monitor). Because of the richness and importance of visual information in the environment and because the acuity (sharpness) of human vision rapidly falls off as one departs from the centre of the gazes focus, humans have evolved to possess a powerful (fast and effective) oculomotor system: six muscles that move the eye-ball in the eye-socket guided by groups of cells in several regions of the brain, most notably in the superior colliculus and frontal eye fields. The behaviour of the oculomotor system is characterised by two states: the gaze is either (virtually) stationary- referred to as fixation- or it is on a fast move- referred to as saccade. Since research to date has convincingly shown that no information is acquired during the eye-movement (saccade), which means we only see during the fixation, psychologists tend to be interested in the latter: the location ...
Being able to generate predictions about what is going to happen next while observing other peoples actions plays a crucial role in our daily lives. Different theoretical explanations for the underlying processes of humans action prediction abilities have been suggested. Whereas an embodied account posits that predictive gaze relies on embodied simulations in the observers motor system, other accounts do not assume a causal role of the motor system for action prediction.. The general aim of this thesis was to augment current knowledge about the functional mechanisms behind humans action prediction abilities. In particular, the present thesis outlines and tests an embodied account of action prediction. The second aim of this thesis was to extend prior action prediction studies by exploring infants online gaze during observation of social interactions.. The thesis reports 3 eye-tracking studies that were designed to measure adults and infants predictive eye movements during observation of ...
Given the increase in RT with the log of MSS, it could be proposed that Os perform a smaller set of sequential searches. Logarithmic RTs can be obtained, for example, by a process that eliminates some percentage (e.g., half) of items on each iteration. Does the display contain any of these 50 memory set items? If yes, the search can be terminated and the O can respond to the item; if not, check with 25 of the remaining memory items and continue until the item is found or you have exhausted all your items. The low revisitation rates in the eye-tracking data argue against this account. If an item was fixated, the chance that it would be refixated on that trial increased from 10% to 60% as MSS increased from one to 100 items. Although this is a significant increase, F(1.17, 15.23) = 13.54, p , 0.001, g-η2 = 0.19, items were not even fixated twice, on average, even at the highest MSS. The difference between this model of how hybrid search is accomplished and the data is particularly evident on ...

This project explores the utility of eye-tracking in the study of literary devices characteristic of both Modernist literature and the popular crime/thriller genre. Experimenters typically use simple texts of only a sentence or two rather than real literary texts. Our studies will increase scientific understanding of how authentic literary texts are read, as well as demonstrate the value of complementing theoretical claims about literary devices with empirical testing.
