Asteroid hyalosis is a degenerative condition of the eye involving small white opacities in the vitreous humor. It is known to occur in humans, dogs, cats, horses, and chinchillas. Clinically, these opacities are quite refractile, giving the appearance of stars (or asteroids) shining in the night sky-except that ocular asteroids are often quite mobile. Ocular asteroids must be distinguished from the more common typical vitreous floaters, which are usually fibrillar or cellular condensates. The cause of asteroid hyalosis is unknown, but it has been associated with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and, in certain animals, tumors of the ciliary body. In dogs, asteroid hyalosis is considered to be an age related change. The asteroid bodies are made up of hydroxylapatite, which in turn consists of calcium and phosphates or phospholipids. While asteroid hyalosis does not usually severely affect vision, the floating opacities can be quite annoying, and may interfere significantly ...
The researcher, Frederick W. Fraunfelder, M.D., assistant professor of ophthalmology in the OHSU School of Medicine and the OHSU Casey Eye Institute, found side effects ranging from dry eye to retinal hemorrhages and transient visual loss. Most of the side effects were associated with higher doses and topical application. While none of the reported cases caused permanent damage, many could have if the patient had not discontinued use of the product. "A large segment of the population uses herbal medicines and nutritional supplements, many times without the treating physician s knowledge," said Fraunfelder, who also is director of the National Registry of Drug-Induced Ocular Side Effects based at the Casey Eye Institute. "These products can cause ocular side effects and clinicians need to recognize these adverse events ...

The results may help target specific groups within the community.. Few studies have investigated the relation between KAP and age related eye disease.11-13 The results of the current study indicated that the majority of people had correct knowledge of one or more of the three eye conditions specified; however, this was mainly attributable to respondents providing a lay description of cataract-that is, "a film over the eye". There were serious deficiencies in respondent knowledge of both glaucoma ...

The conjunctiva are the mucus membranes that cover the inside of a dogs eyelids, both sides of the third eyelid and some parts of the eyeball itself. Conjunctivitis and Pink Eye are interchangeable terms that simply mean inflammation of the conjunctiva. The symptoms of conjunctivitis include reddened and swollen conjunctiva, eye drainage, and discomfort.. Conjunctivitis is more of a symptom of a disease, not a disease itself. Many conditions in dogs cause conjunctivitis, including physical irritation (like dust or inward growing eyelashes), infections (bacterial and viral) and allergic reactions.. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Sterile saline eye washes can be used to flush irritants from the eye. Bacterial eye infections are usually resolved when treated with the appropriate prescribed antibiotic eye drop or ointment. The chances of catching pink eye from your dog is very low, but it makes perfect sense to wash your hands thorough after applying your dogs eye medications. Make an ...

Ocular images play an essential role in ophthalmological diagnoses. Having an imbalanced dataset is an inevitable issue in automated ocular diseases diagnosis; the scarcity of positive samples always tends to result in the misdiagnosis of severe patients during the classification task. Exploring an effective computer-aided diagnostic method to deal with imbalanced ophthalmological dataset is crucial. In this paper, we develop an effective cost-sensitive deep residual convolutional neural network (CS-ResCNN) classifier to diagnose ophthalmic diseases using retro-illumination images. First, the regions of interest (crystalline lens) are automatically identified via twice-applied Canny detection and Hough transformation. Then, the localized zones are fed into the CS-ResCNN to extract high-level features for subsequent use in automatic diagnosis. Second, the impacts of cost factors on the CS-ResCNN are further analyzed using a grid-search procedure to verify that our proposed system is robust and efficient.

Luckily, its not hard to treat most cases of dry eyes. You can offset the degree of dryness by buying a humidifier. If that doesnt work, you can administer eye drops throughout the day. You can take a dry eye test to determine whether you need treatment. A doctor can correct the problem by plugging tear ducts to reduce drainage. Serologic studies indicate a past CMV infection in approximately 50% of the adult population in urban areas of the United States and Europe (41) and close to 100% in the male homosexual population. CMV disease affecting the eye, however, ...
Eye redness can often be a minor issue that is caused by the inflammation or irritation of blood vessels near the eyes surface. This can be caused by an irritant, lack of sleep, or allergies. If the redness in your eyes is linked to some type of traumatic injury, you should see a doctor. Typical treatments for this condition are eye drops to help lubricate the eye, resting your eyes, or taking medication to treat your allergies. Eye redness can also be a warning sign for conjunctivitis, pink eye, or sun damage. These conditions should receive medical treatment from a licensed professional ...
Source: Canine Genetics and Epidemiology. Author: Cathryn S Mellersh - [email protected] Inherited forms of eye disease are arguably the best described and best characterized of all inherited diseases in the dog, at both the clinical and molecular level and at the time of writing 29 different mutations have been documented in the scientific literature that are associated with an inherited ocular disorder in the dog. The dog has already played an important role in the identification of genes that are important for ocular development and function as well as emerging therapies for inherited blindness in humans. Similarities in disease phenotype and eye structure and function between dog and man, together with the increasingly sophisticated genetic tools that are available for the dog, mean that the dog is likely to play an ever increasing role in both our understanding of the normal functioning of the eye and in our ability to treat inherited eye disorders. This review summarises the ...

Patients suffering from chronic eye condition called uveitis may now have an alternative approach better than the conventional treatment. According to a new research, an immune based drug called Humira has shown promise against eye inflammation and can potentially improve the way eye inflammation has been treated today.. Dont Miss the CES 2018 Highlights. "Patients may have many unwanted side effects when taking steroids long-term, as many uveitis patients do," said lead researcher Dr. Glenn Jaffe from Duke University. "The goal of these studies was to determine whether there was an alternative that could replace or minimize the use of steroids. The studies also looked at whether an alternative would be better tolerated or more effective, yet still safe.". Uveitis is a form of eye inflammation that affects the middle layer of the tissue in eye wall. The symptoms fot the disease may include eye redness, pain and blurred vision and can range from mild to severe. The symptoms often come suddenly ...

People with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing eye problems that can lead to vision loss and blindness. Diabetic eye problems include diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and glaucoma. In fact, diabetes is actually the leading cause of blindness in the United States.. Diabetic eye problems often develop without any noticeable vision loss or pain. This means the eye might already be significantly damaged by the time people notice any symptoms. For this reason, it is important for people with diabetes to have their eyes examined at least once a year. Early detection of diabetic eye disease can help prevent permanent damage.. Diabetic eye problems develop from high blood sugar levels, which can damage blood vessels in the eye. More than 40 percent of people with diabetes will develop some form of diabetic eye disease. The risk of diabetic eye problems can be reduced through regular diabetic eye exams and by controlling blood sugar levels through a healthy diet and regular exercise.. ...
Inflammatory eye disease (uveitis) can develop as a complication in children who have juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Children and adults who have JIA can develop cataracts, glaucoma, corneal degeneration (band keratopathy), or vision loss.. The incidence of eye disease is 2 to 34 out of 100 children who have JIA.footnote 1 It is most common in oligoarticular and RF-negative polyarticular forms of the disease. Eye disease associated with JIA often has no symptoms, although blurred vision may be an early sign. To prevent eye problems from progressing to the point that vision loss occurs, regular eye examinations by an ophthalmologist are very important for children who have JIA. Eye disease develops in about 30 out of 100 children who have oligoarticular JIA, particularly children who have a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) test result.footnote 2. Early detection and treatment of inflammatory eye disease gives a child the best chance of a good outcome. Discuss the appropriate examination ...
We report 13 cases of ophthalmic complications resulting from dengue infection in Singapore. We performed a retrospective analysis of a series of 13 patients with dengue fever who had visual impairment. Investigations included Humphrey automated visual field analyzer, Amsler charting, fundus fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography. Twenty-two eyes of 13 patients were affected. The mean age of patients was 31.7 years. Visual acuity varied from 20/25 to counting fingers only. Twelve patients (92.3%) noted central vision impairment. Onset of visual impairment coincided with the nadir of serum thrombocytopenia. Ophthalmologic findings include macular edema and blot hemorrhages (10), cotton wool spots (1), retinal vasculitis (4), exudative retinal detachment (2), and anterior uveitis (1). All patients recovered visual acuity to 20/30 or better with residual central scotoma by 12 weeks. These new complications suggest a widening spectrum of ophthalmic complications in dengue infection.
Purpose. To describe new details of epiretinal cell proliferation in flat-mounted internal limiting membrane (ILM) specimens. Methods. One hundred and nineteen ILM specimens were removed en-bloc with epiretinal membranes (ERMs) from 79 eyes with macular pucker (MP) and 40 eyes with vitreomacular traction syndrome (VMTS). Intraoperatively, posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) was assessed as complete or incomplete. Whole specimens were flat-mounted on glass slides, and processed for interference and phase contrast microscopy, cell viability assay, and immunocytochemistry. Results. Mean cell viability percentage was higher in MP than in VMTS. Two cell distribution patterns were found. Anti-CD163 labeling presented predominantly in MP with complete PVD. CD45 expression was similar in all groups of diagnosis. Anti-GFAP labeling was found in MP irrespective of the extent of PVD. Alpha-SMA labeling mainly presented in MP with incomplete PVD and in VMTS. Simultaneous antibody labeling included ...
Assessment of eye irritation hazard has long been a core requirement in any chemical legislation. Nevertheless, publications focussing on the eye damaging potential of nanomaterials are scarce. Traditionally, eye irritation testing was performed using rabbits. The OECD Test Guideline 437 Bovine Corneal Opacity and Permeability (BCOP) test method allows determining severely irritating substances without animals, and the recently adopted OECD Test Guideline 492 Reconstructed human cornea-like epithelium test method allows identifying chemicals that neither induce eye irritation nor serious eye damage. For substances applicable to these tests, huge progress has been made in replacing animal testing. The in vitro eye irritation potential of 20 nanosized and 3 non-nanosized materials was investigated in a 2-tier EpiOcular™ Eye Irritation Test (EpiOcular™-EIT) and BCOP testing strategy including histopathology of the bovine corneas. Furthermore, applicability of the testing strategy for nanomaterials was

VAN DYK, M e MEYER, D. Hutchinsons sign as a marker of ocular involvement in HIV-positive patients with herpes zoster ophthalmicus. SAMJ, S. Afr. med. j. [online]. 2010, vol.100, n.3, pp.172-174. ISSN 2078-5135.. BACKGROUND: A positive Hutchinsons sign indicates an increased risk of ocular involvement in herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO). We examined the sensitivity of Hutchinsons sign as an indicator of ocular involvement in a consecutive series of patients presenting with HZO. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive observational prospective study of patients ,18 years old presenting with HZO and consenting to pre- and post-test counselling and HIV and CD4 testing. A full ophthalmological examination focused on the extent of ocular involvement, and the presence of Hutchinsons sign was confirmed by two clinicians. RESULTS: Thirty-three patients were enrolled; 29 were HIV positive, of whom 18 (62%) had not been diagnosed with HIV prior to enrolment. Of the 29 HIV-positive patients, 21 (72%) were ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Experimental ocular onchocerciasis in cynomolgus monkeys. II. Chorioretinitis elicited by intravitreal Onchocerca lienalis microfilariae. AU - Semba, Richard David. AU - Donnelly, J. J.. AU - Rockey, J. H.. AU - Lok, J. B.. AU - Sakla, A. A.. AU - Taylor, H. R.. PY - 1988. Y1 - 1988. N2 - Chorioretinitis due to onchocerciasis is a major cause of blindness, and the pathogenesis is poorly understood. We have developed an experimental model for onchocercal chorioretinitis using cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). Two normal monkeys and two monkeys which had received prior sensitization with subcutaneous injections of live Onchocerca lienalis microfilariae were given intravitreal injections of either 0, 10, 50 or 500 live microfilariae. Posterior segment changes included disc edema, venous engorgement, retinal vasculitis, intraretinal hemorrhage, and progressive retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) disturbances. Histopathological findings included perivascular infiltrates with ...
Thyroid eye disease, which is also known as Graves ophthalmopathy, affects approximately 50% of those people with Graves Disease. And while in most cases the condition isnt severe, this isnt always the case. Common symptoms include eye swelling, eye bulging (exophthalmos), and sometimes even blurriness and double vision. While steroids such as prednisone are commonly given to help with the inflammation, certain natural approaches can also benefit the patient, without them having the side effects of steroid medications. Research shows that selenium can be very effective in helping with thyroid eye disease, which Ill discuss in this post.. But why is selenium so effective in helping with thyroid eye disease? In order to better understand why selenium can help it probably is a good idea to briefly talk about the pathophysiology of thyroid eye disease. Research clearly shows that Graves ophthalmopathy isnt due to the hyperthyroidism associated with Graves Disease, but instead is due to the ...
