We are proud to announce that FSD Africa is now a member of the Extreme Heat Resilience Alliance (EHRA), joining over 30 global EHRA partners. The EHRA was formed in August 2020 by the Atlantic Councils Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center in response to the growing threat from climate-related extreme heat events, particularly in cities. With Arsht-Rocks support, EHRA has assembled a diverse group of experts to increase collective and individual resilience to extreme heat through education, policy, finance, and implementation solutions for one billion people around the globe, aiming to reduce the negative health and economic impact of extreme urban heat on vulnerable people. Africa is particularly vulnerable to extreme heat. It is the hottest continent on earth, holding many heat-related records. The continent has the hottest extended region year-round, the areas with the hottest summer climate, the highest sunshine duration, and more. According to the UN IPCC, mean annual ...
Extreme heat is a prolonged period of very hot weather, which may include high humidity. In Massachusetts, a heat wave is usually defined as a period of three or more consecutive days above 90 °F.. Why Prepare?. Extreme heat can be dangerous and even life-threatening if proper precautions are not taken. In extreme heat and high humidity, the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature.. Most heat-related illnesses occur because the victim has been over-exposed to heat or has over-exercised for his or her age and physical condition. Although anyone can suffer from a heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others. Those at greater risk include older adults, young children and those who are sick or overweight. To reduce the risks of extreme heat conditions, take the proper safety precautions to protect yourself and your family.. ...
Among the challenges for rural communities and health services in Australia, climate change and increasing extreme heat are emerging as additional stressors. Effective public health responses to extreme heat require an understanding of the impact on health and well-being, and the risk or protective factors within communities. This study draws on lived experiences to explore these issues in eleven rural and remote communities across South Australia, framing these within a socio-ecological model. Semi-structured interviews with health service providers (n = 13), and a thematic analysis of these data, has identified particular challenges for rural communities and their health services during extreme heat. The findings draw attention to the social impacts of extreme heat in rural communities, the protective factors (independence, social support, education, community safety), and challenges for adaptation (vulnerabilities, infrastructure, community demographics, housing and local industries). With
Several studies have investigated the association between asthma exacerbations and exposures to ambient temperature and precipitation. However, limited data exists regarding how extreme events, projected to grow in frequency, intensity, and duration in the future in response to our changing climate, will impact the risk of hospitalization for asthma. The objective of our study was to quantify the association between frequency of extreme heat and precipitation events and increased risk of hospitalization for asthma in Maryland between 2000 and 2012. We used a time-stratified case-crossover design to examine the association between exposure to extreme heat and precipitation events and risk of hospitalization for asthma (ICD-9 code 493, n = 115,923). Occurrence of extreme heat events in Maryland increased the risk of same day hospitalization for asthma (lag 0) by 3 % (Odds Ratio (OR): 1.03, 95 % Confidence Interval (CI): 1.00, 1.07), with a considerably higher risk observed for extreme heat events ...
Extreme heat stress during the crop reproductive period can be critical for crop productivity. Projected changes in the frequency and severity of extreme climatic events are expected to negatively impact crop yields and global food production. This study applies the global crop model PEGASUS to quantify, for the first time at the global scale, impacts of extreme heat stress on maize, spring wheat and soybean yields resulting from 72 climate change scenarios for the 21st century. Our results project maize to face progressively worse impacts under a range of RCPs but spring wheat and soybean to improve globally through to the 2080s due to CO2 fertilization effects, even though parts of the tropic and sub-tropic regions could face substantial yield declines. We find extreme heat stress at anthesis (HSA) by the 2080s (relative to the 1980s) under RCP 8.5, taking into account CO2 fertilization effects, could double global losses of maize yield (ΔY = −12.8 ± 6.7% versus − 7.0 ± 5.3% without ...
Both corn and soybean are susceptible to extreme heat (and water) stress during early vegetative stages as well as later critical growth stages (pollination for corn and flowering for soybean). Extreme heat stress can reduce plant photosynthetic and transpiration efficiencies and negatively impact plant root development, which collectively can negatively impact yield. The

The following article was written by Jennifer Ronk as a complimentary piece to her interview on Houston Public Media.. According to the US Centers for Disease Control, heat waves are the leading cause of extreme weather-related deaths in the US, and the number is rising. Heat-related deaths are also typically highest in urban counties. Often there is an assumption that these deaths only happen in northern cities that are not as well equipped to manage extreme heat, but in 2011, 46 people died from heat-related illness in Texas. More than any other state that year. As temperatures increase, Houston is interesting because it is in a very hot and humid part of the county, but also has a rapidly growing population. As cities develop, trees and vegetated areas are reduced, natural surfaces are paved, and buildings constructed. Together these changes produce the urban heat island effect. Research suggests cities are often of 6 to 8ºF hotter than rural areas. This can be particularly challenging in ...
Extreme heat events (EHEs) are becoming more intense, more frequent and longer lasting in the 21st century. These events can disproportionately impact the health of low-income, minority, and urban populations. To better understand heat-related intervention strategies used by four U.S. cities, we conducted 73 semi-structured interviews with government and non-governmental organization leaders representing public health, general social services, emergency management, meteorology, and the environmental planning sectors in Detroit, MI; New York City, NY; Philadelphia, PA and Phoenix, AZ-cities selected for their diverse demographics, climates, and climate adaptation strategies. We identified activities these leaders used to reduce the harmful effects of heat for residents in their city, as well as the obstacles they faced and the approaches they used to evaluate these efforts. Local leaders provided a description of how local context (e.g., climate, governance and city structure) impacted heat preparedness.

Spokane WA is supposed to hit the triple digits this weekend and I am a little worried about the last of my spring vegetables? I have hoop houses over my raised beds and will be covering them with burlap shade cloth before the heat strikes, any other tips would be greatly appreciated!. ~JJ. While a cactus will thrive in extreme heat, some plants struggle. Im so not looking forward to the heat, but there are a few measures I take to make sure my veggies dont fry. First, I am extra vigilant about watering. In extreme heat, watering is the key. Sometimes people freak about the heat and over water, which is so harmful! Just make sure the soil stays moist, not soggy {soaker hoses are your best friend in the heat!}. Also, mist plants frequently in the afternoon. Next, the row or plant cover idea to help give some much needed shade is great. But you have to be careful not to trap heat in. Try using an ...

Sunday, August 6th was Austins 30th 100° day so far in 2017.. From Climate Central:. This week we look at how the frequency of extreme heat is projected to increase by the middle and the end of the century. The number of these very hot days is expected to increase sharply as the world further warms from the buildup of greenhouse gases. What may initially appear to be a small increase in the average temperature has a large impact on these extremes. As an entire distribution of daily high temperatures shifts slightly warmer, those rare days with extreme heat become much more numerous.. With the concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide continuing to climb, the frequency of extreme heat will likely increase. This will continue to be the case well into the future, as carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for centuries. Long-term trends caused by increasing greenhouse gases take time to settle in and are always intertwined with shorter-term weather variations. This is true in ...

Taking precautions to beat the heat? You may not realize that your childs prescription medications need protecting as well. As you seek cool, shady spots while on vacation, or at home, dont leave your medicines behind in the car, say experts at The Montreal Childrens Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Most medications need to be stored in a controlled room temperature, between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, says Patricia Vandecruys, Site Coordinator of the Pharmacy Department at The Montreal Childrens Hospital. Many prescription drugs are very sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, and their potency and effectiveness can be altered if they are exposed to extreme heat.. Egg on a sidewalk analogy. The increase in the CO2 concentration of the atmosphere does not compensate the negative effect of greenhouse gas-induced climate change on trees: The more extreme drought and heat become, the less do trees profit from the increased supply with carbon dioxide in terms of carbon metabolism and water use efficiency. This finding was obtained by researchers of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) when studying Aleppo pines. Their study is reported in New Phytologist (DOI: 10.1111/nph.16471).

At temperatures above 35 degrees the human bodys ability to cool itself reduces, making it a common benchmark temperature for occupational health and safety experts, academic and government researchers. Combined with 70% humidity, conditions over 35 degrees are considered extremely dangerous by government agencies such as the US Government National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The number of days over 35 degrees per year in Rockhampton has nearly doubled from an average of 18.1 days per year in the mid-20th century to 31.6 days per year in the last five. Mid-20th century levels will more than triple to a projected 70 days over 35 by 2070. Combined with the humidity of Rockhamptons summer, more days are seeing dangerous heat levels.. Other clues about the role of temperature in the transmission of viruses can be drawn from epidemiological studies that have demonstrated the seasonality of influenza infection. Winter has consistently been the most common season when influenza peaks. Factors explored include seasonal host health, viral evolution, indoor heating, air travel, crowding (Lofgren, 2007). Lowen et al. used the guinea pig model to show that cold and dry temperatures favored transmission of influenza. Influenza infected guinea pigs had a much longer duration of peak shedding of virus at 5 C (41 F) than at 20 C (68 F). However, if temperature were an absolute predictor of infectivity we would not see viral outbreaks in the tropics which we absolutely do. Newly emerging viruses causing zoonotic disease have behaved in a less seasonably predictable way which may be due to persistent shedding in animal reservoirs (Dowell, 2004). More studies are needed to determine to what extent SARS-CoV-2 viral transmission is impacted ...
Extreme heat events pose a risk to the health of all individuals, especially the elderly and the chronically ill, and are associated with an increased demand for healthcare services. In order to address this problem, policy makers need information about temperatures above which mortality and morbidity of the exposed population is likely to increase, where the vulnerable groups in the community are located, and how the risks from extreme heat events are likely to change in the future. This study identified threshold temperatures for all Australian capital cities, developed a spatial index of population vulnerability, and used climate model output to predict changes in the number of days exceeding temperature thresholds in the future, as well as changes in risk related to changes in urban density and an ageing population. The study has shown that daily maximum and minimum temperatures from the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts can be used to calculate temperature thresholds for heat alert days. The ...

This case study addresses the climate impacts risks and vulnerabilities related to extreme weather events, including increasing experiences of extreme heat days, multiple instances of extreme rainfall and flooding, and significant impacts from the ice storm that hit southern Ontario in 2013. The ice storm left 20,000 homes without power, and many bus routes inaccessible for days. Brampton is also situated in one of Canadas tornado pathways. When investigating the Citys response to these events, a significant gap in outreach to vulnerable populations was found. Public information about ice storm response was delivered through social media, but a large segment of the population was not reached. The City found that there was no direct method of wellness checks, and volunteer agencies were frequently overwhelmed. During extreme heat days, the City opened eight cooling centers located in community centers, but their usage was limited. These findings led the City to the realization that vulnerable ...

During Arizonas hottest months, the National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) issue weather alerts to notify the public when unusually hot weather is expected. These alerts are intended to raise the publics awareness to prevent heat illness and death from occurring and mitigate financial impacts. When the NWS issues an alert, it should serve as a signal that on that day outdoor activities are not business as usual.. Studies have shown that our bodies have a greater ability to tolerate heat as the summer wears on. For example, a temperature of 105 degrees in May will seem hot, whereas the same temperature in June or July will not seem as hot because our bodies have acclimated to the heat. Hence, there is not one single, constant temperature used by the NWS WFO Phoenix to determine when an alert will be issued.. If significantly hot weather is forecast, the NWS will issue an Excessive Heat Watch generally three to seven days in advance. An Excessive Heat Watch is a way to ...

Science also tells us that some regions and population groups will be hit harder than others. While there will be no real winners in a warming climate, it is clear that the biggest losers will be the poorest and most vulnerable. Exceeding the 1.5°C global warming limit would lead to the low-income nations experiencing the greatest local climate changes. Among developing countries, the bottom 40% of income earners are projected to suffer 70% higher income losses than the average population.. The tropical regions, where much of the developing countries are located, will be at the forefront of these changes. An additional half a degree increase in global mean temperature would mean that the tropics will undergo strongest increase in warming relative to natural variability, as shown in a study led by Climate Analytics scientists.. Even at 2ºC warming, the summers there could turn into one continuous heatwave. Two analyses led by Climate Analytics experts show that combining this extreme heat with ...

Seattle has a warm-temperate climate.[87][88][89], [90][91] It has mild, wet winters and mild, relatively dry summers.[92][93] The city and environs are part of USDA hardiness zone 8b, with isolated coastal pockets falling under 9a.[94]. Temperature extremes are moderated by the adjacent Puget Sound, greater Pacific Ocean, and Lake Washington. Thus extreme heat waves are rare in the Seattle area, as are very cold temperatures (below about 15 °F (−9 °C)). The Seattle area is the most cloudy region of the United States, due in part to frequent storms and lows moving in from the adjacent Pacific Ocean. Despite having a reputation for frequent rain, Seattle receives less precipitation than many other U.S. cities like Chicago or New York City. However, unlike many other U.S. cities, Seattle has many more rain days, when a very light drizzle falls from the sky for many days.[95] In an average year, at least 0.01 inches (0.25 mm) of precipitation falls on 150 days, more than nearly all U.S. ...
The majority of recent heat-related deaths investigated by federal authorities involved workers whod been on the job for three days or less.
There are certain ways that you can adjust or modify your risk of asthma exacerbation during extreme weather conditions.. Please keep in mind that you should feel free to discuss any potential asthma triggers and avoidance with your physician.. Climate change is a crucial issue in Trung Huu Nguyens home country of Vietnam, particularly its coastal cities. But, says the 2017 IDRC Research Award Recipient, most of the research on climate change perceptions focuses on rural farmers and overlooks urban residents. Perceptions of climate change are important because they influence behaviours and response, and contribute to informed policy decisions, says Nguyen. Working in the coastal cities of Hoi An and Nha Trang, he found that residents not only recognized impacts of climate change such as extreme heat and flooding, but had adapted in various ways, including diversifying their income-generation activities.. As Nguyens earlier experiences and education focused on rural communities and livelihoods, his fieldwork allowed him to gain better insight into the impacts of climate change on urban residents who depend on tourism. For them, it could mean a better and longer business season, he says.. To enable residents to adapt to future ...

Dear Editor,. Ill be honest, Im scared. Its only mid July and Canada is already on track for one of the worst wildfire seasons in history. And, thats saying nothing about floods, drought and other impacts of the extreme heat were seeing this summer.. Im scared not just because climate change is clearly here, but because our government isnt acting at the pace and scale we need to meet this crisis head on.. If Justin Trudeau was serious about tackling the climate crisis, he would be acting decisively right now to put out this proverbial fire by stopping fossil fuel expansion and passing a Just Transition into law.. Canadas fossil industry is our largest source of emissions, but our government continues to support their expansion. And, they arent supporting workers. In his 2019 campaign, Trudeau promised to pass a Just Transition Act, but with another election on the horizon, nothing has happened.. We deserve better. Its been more than two years since our government declared a climate ...
What is the link between extreme temperatures and climate change?. The frequency with which extreme heat events occur is increasing. Additionally, the severity and duration of these events is also increasing. Despite the warming, record cold temperatures have been recorded during this time in certain locations. Changes in temperature can also affect local/regional weather systems. Precipitation patterns, wind and storm patterns, and food growing seasons are all dependent on weather. As a result of changing weather patterns and extreme temperatures, there is an increased risk of drought, flooding, wildfires, and storms - affecting air quality, water and food security, and insect pathogens. How do changes in temperature affect our health?. More frequent, more intense and longer-lasting heat events can create conditions that can negatively impact your health. High heat events can increase the levels of pollens and allergens in the air that can trigger asthma, and worsen pre-existing respiratory and ...
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) - Potentially record-setting heat in Wilmington today was not enough to keep some volunteers from their work. Group Workcamps volunteers from across the country have been working all week repairing homes for the needy.. Even with temperatures soaring into the triple digits, the group of teens from across the nation pushed through the heat to help out the community.. Volunteers came for Group Workcamps, an intensive one-week mission trip, to do much-needed home repairs for elderly, disabled, and low income families in our area. Finishing up their week meant working through extreme heat. It gets really hot, and its hard to stay motivated, but helping the people really helps us keep going, volunteer Sidney Tomko said.. It has been extremely hard to work because of the heat, but weve stayed hydrated, volunteer Robin Russell said. Weve had our Gatorade, and it hasnt hurt our spirit. Weve stayed focused. Its been a great week here in Wilmington.. Those receiving help ...
It was one week ago that the benchmark 10-year yield hit 1.17 percent. Now were back up to 1.32, the same yield that we saw for much of early and mid-July. End of the world? Of course not. Something to be aware of? Yes. Something else to be aware of is the latest report on climate change. Whether you believe in manmade climate change or not, plenty of people do, including investors in mortgages. World climate aside, a Nature Communications report found that in nearly every major U.S. city, people of color are more likely to live in census tracts with a more intense heat island effect. One nonprofit research group published Tree Equity scores for 150,000 neighborhoods in 486 urban areas in the U.S., which showed that nationwide, wealthier areas have 65% more tree coverage than lower-income neighborhoods overall. One way to weather the extreme heat is to stay inside and crank the air conditioning, but that can be difficult for low-income communities who are more likely to already be struggling ...
It is supposed to be scorching hot out today so TOP TAILS may adjust the walks and routes based on our current extreme weather conditions. On days with extreme heat/rain/cold/ice/snow (85 degrees F/32 degrees F) the walks may be shortened to ensure the safety of our dogs and walkers. However, due to the risks associated with walking dogs in extreme conditions, rates are not changed due to shortened walks. We will spend whatever remaining reserved time indoors playing, petting, brushing, cuddling, etc with your pets ...
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Boating in the summertime can seem like the perfect way to escape the heat, but it is important for everyone enjoying outdoor activities to be aware of sun safety. July 30, 2017. A federal judge in Houston ordered a geriatric prison in Texas to help inmates overcome extreme heat and rising summer temperatures, referencing climate change in a groundbreaking ruling this week. U.S. District Judge Keith Ellison deemed it cruel and unusual that state corrections are aware of dangerous and lethal heat risks - at least 23 men in Texas prisons have died from the heat in the last 20 years - yet have failed to impose safeguards.. ...
Animals usually have more problems in hot environments than in cold. Pigs can suffer heat prostration and die in a short period of time, even minutes, under severe conditions. Good ventilation is vital. Animals typically cool themselves by panting, which becomes inefficient in extreme heat, poor ventilation, or when dehydration causes a lack of moisture on the tongue. Panting is NOT how pigs cool off. Pigs need an area that is shaded and/or a fresh water source like a kiddie pool to cool off in. Some pigs will stay inside the poorly ventilated house outdoors because they feel safe in there, so be sure to check up on your pig often in extreme weather. If it is absolutely necessary to leave your pet in the car, even for a short time, keep the windows partially open. In the summer, the cars interior can quickly rise to over 150°F, and your pets body temperature may rise to 110°F or more, causing irreversible brain damage and/or death within minutes. It is NOT advisable to leave your pig in the ...

Because many people new to diabetes are not aware of the dangers, any advice about the dangers of heat and dehydration is good for people with diabetes (please read about heat stroke in my six blogs starting here). Also people need to protect their testing equipment (meters and strips) from the extreme heat and not store them in direct sunlight as this will make them useless. Also included is the medications (pills and/or insulin) that should be stored in cool packs (Frio packs) and not left in direct exposure to the sun. Frio packs can be found through many sources - just use your search engine and enter Frio packs ...

The cause of this reportable mortality was heat stress. The peak in mortalities corresponded with extreme heat and humidity experienced in Qatar. The humidity and temperatures experienced from day 5 to day 13 and associated deck conditions, prior to arrival in Qatar is likely to have contributed to the severity of the mortality event. The highest mortality rates were in the A class wethers (69.43 kg), which were the fourth most numerous class of the sheep on board the ship making up 7.51 per cent of the consignment. There was no significant correlation of mortalities with deck position.. The departments original investigation found the sheep were prepared and transported in accordance with the Export Control (Animals) Orders and the Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL) based on the information provided to the department during the course of the original investigation. The additional material provided by Animals Australia in April 2018 revealed some breaches of ASEL relating ...
Its easy to play armchair quarterback, but it does strike me as a little strange that the vaults designers assumed the permafrost would provide permanent protection for the vault. The vault was built relatively recently in 2008. That was almost 10 years ago, but its not as if global warming and climate change were not already being widely discussed at the time.. According to The Guardian, the permafrost was suppose to provide failsafe protection, but I think we can safely assume extreme heat is not a one-off.. Flooding did not reach the interior of the vault and no seeds were lost. ...
One argued silver lining of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide levels is that plants will be better off. But a new study has found that the more extreme heat and drought brought on by climate change would cancel out most of the benefits for trees ...
While implementing these measures, healthcare providers and facilities should continue to follow the latest Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and CDPH AFLs.. Hot weather brings mosquitoes and the risk of contracting West Nile Virus. If mosquitoes are abundant, residents and clients should remain indoors in the early morning and at twilight, when mosquitoes are most active. Use repellents cautiously, especially on children and the elderly. For additional information on the use of chemical repellents, administrators or infection control practitioners should consult the CDC website at CDC - Natural Disasters and Severe Weather.. Licensing regulations require facilities to report all emergency and/or disaster-related occurrences that threaten the welfare, safety, or health of patients to the L&C Program. If the extreme heat conditions affect your facility by compromising patient health and safety and/or require an evacuation, ...
Summer is the time when one must be extra careful while driving, especially in the day time, when the sun is beating down hard and the heat is excruciating. Extreme heat conditions affect vehicles as well, especially small cars!
Salt on the ground in the winter, as well as freezing paws can be challenging for dogs during our Canadian winters. Weve got some select products to help with keeping feet and paw pads healthy during harsher weather. At our pet shop, we stock different Dog Boots, which are high-traction all-terrain dog boots to keep your dogs feet safe from hazards and unfavourable conditions. Harsh weather conditions (extreme heat or cold) can cause your cat or dog to get dry/cracked paws. To help soothe and protect paw pads we have Paw Wax, which adds moisture and creates a semi-permeable shield. We also carry Reliq Paw Spa Cream, rich formula with added botanicals and volcanic minerals to moisturize and soothe irritated dog paw pads. For senior dogs, who slide on hardwood, consider the rubber dipped socks to improve traction and mobility within the home. And note that we offer Canada-wide shipping.

June 12, 2019. CONTACT: Officer Chuck McPhilamy. [email protected]. 770.794.5370. MARIETTA - Temperatures in Marietta spiked in the upper nineties before June first! While it has dropped a few degrees this week, we are still having an unusually hot spring with summer right around the corner. Its time for some quick reminders about pet safety and etiquette.. The City of Marietta is excited about the upcoming events that will be hosted on the square and Glover Park area. From Juneteenth, to 4th of July, art-walks, Friday night concert series and the farmers market, we are expecting thousands of visitors. Many of those visitors will be of the four-legged variety, or fur babies. The Marietta Police Department would like to share a friendly reminder about the danger to your pets when exposed to extreme heat. • When the temperature is very high, dont let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Being so close to the ground, your poochs body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. ...
What makes a good foundation plant for your home landscape? Any plant that can tolerate extreme heat, highly compact soil and a highly alkaline soil pH is a good candidate.. Plants like loropetalums, abelias, crape myrtles, hybrid hollies, maples, spiraeas and yews are suitable foundation plants because they can adapt to the extreme conditions often found around house foundations. Builders spend a lot of time making sure the soil around a homes foundation is highly compacted in order to stabilize the house. A solid, firm foundation is needed so that the underlying slab or footer walls dont settle and crack.. Ironically, this is where homeowners want to place plants. Many landscape plants need moist, well-drained soil to grow healthy roots. This is the exact opposite of whats available at a houses perimeter.. Excess water from downspouts, clogged gutters and air conditioner condensate can overwater plants. Even where the landscape is properly graded and the water appears to run away from the ...
Components for technically challenging or extreme environments require materials with unique combinations of properties-and were a known innovator and leader in meeting these challenges. For example, in medical imaging our niobium-titanium alloys are the standard for building superconducting magnets that operate at near absolute zero temperatures in MRI machines. For the aerospace industry, we produce niobium alloys that combine high formability with the strength to withstand a sustained 1500°C rocket blast. And the highly pure zirconium alloys we provide to the nuclear industry withstand extreme heat, radiation and corrosion within a reactor core. We are solving the worlds challenges through Materials Science ...

For the most part, Dean has been extremely healthy but then there are times when a persistent cough wracks his body 24/7 or when the extreme heat during a baseball game causes him to sweat more and lose more salt. Losing too much salt for Dean can lead to loss of appetite, tiredness, nausea, difficulty concentrating, weakness, dizziness, muscle cramps, headaches and dehydration (which in itself causes sputum to be thicker and increases the likelihood of infection). We combat this by giving him a ton of extra salt in foods and his favorite, using NUUN salt tabs in his water bottles. In true Dean form though, he doesnt notice the heat or complain about it, he just wants to keep playing. And while we may cringe at the constant coughing, he says, Look at my abs! Ive got a six-pack. There have been more than a few days when I look into Deans young face and wish I could take it all away and that we could all forget just what Cystic Fibrosis is but since that isnt my superpower, we do what we can ...
