The detection of bacterial-specific volatile metabolites may be a valuable tool to predict infection. Here we applied a real-time mass spectrometric technique to investigate differences in volatile metabolic profiles of oral bacteria that cause periodontitis. We coupled a secondary electrospray ionization (SESI) source to a commercial high-resolution mass spectrometer to interrogate the headspace from bacterial cultures and human saliva. We identified 120 potential markers characteristic for periodontal pathogens Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (n = 13), Porphyromonas gingivalis (n = 70), Tanerella forsythia (n = 30) and Treponema denticola (n = 7) in in vitro cultures. However, the anti-TNT antibody may adsorb non-specifically on the polymer surface by an electrostatic interaction because MES is negatively charged. Therefore, a mixed monomer with MES and diethylaminoethylmethacrylate (DEAEM), which has a tertiary amino group and is positively charged, was prepared to obtain electroneutrality for suppressing the nonspecific adsorption. The detection of TNT was performed by inhibition assay using the polymer surface. The agencies responsible for public security need powerful and sensitive tools to detect warfare agents and explosives. Volatile signature detection is one of the fastest and easiest ways to achieve this task. However, explosive chemicals have low volatility making their detection challenging. In this research, we developed and evaluated fast chromatographic methods to improve the characterization of volatile signatures from explosives samples. The headspace of explosives was sampled with solid phase micro-extraction fiber (SPME). Following this step, classical gas chromatography (GC) and comprehensive two-dimensional GC (GC×GC) were used for analysis. A fast GC approach allows the elution temperature of each analyte to be decreased, resulting in decreased thermal degradation of sensitive compounds (e.g., nitro explosives). Similarly, the proposal increases the annual amount of high explosives used in open-air detonations from 1,000 pounds per year to 7,500 pounds per year, a more than 7-fold increase. The detonations would occur on a flat, outdoor "firing table" measuring more than 7,000 square feet. The huge open-air tests employ no air pollution control technology. Abstract: Very recently, the gravitational-wave (GW) event GW170817 was discovered to be associated with the short gamma-ray burst (GRB) 170817A. Multi-wavelength follow-up observations were carried out, and X-ray, optical, and radio counterparts to GW170817 were detected. The observations undoubtedly indicate that GRB 170817A originates from a binary neutron star merger. However, the GRB falls into the low-luminosity class that could have a higher statistical occurrence rate and detection probability than the normal (high-luminosity) class. This implies the possibility that GRB 170817A is intrinsically powerful, but we are off-axis and only observe its side emission. In this Letter, we provide a timely modeling of the multi-wavelength afterglow emission from this GRB and the associated kilonova signal from the merger ejecta, under the assumption of a structured jet, a two-component jet, and an intrinsically less-energetic quasi-isotropic fireball, respectively. We present analytic flux prescriptions for broad-band spectra of self-absorbed and optically thin synchrotron radiation from gamma-ray burst afterglows, based on 1D relativistic hydrodynamic simulations. By treating the evolution of critical spectrum parameters as a power-law break between the ultrarelativistic and non-relativistic asymptotic solutions, we generalize the prescriptions to any observer time. Our aim is to provide a set of formulas that constitutes a useful tool for accurate fitting of model parameters to observational data, regardless of the dynamical phase of the outflow. The applicability range is not confined to gamma-ray burst afterglows, but includes all spherical outflows (also jets before the jet-break) that produce synchrotron radiation as they adiabatically decelerate in a cold, power-law medium. This picture book provides a brief but interesting and well-illustrated account of Alfred Nobels adult life. I never realized that the man that invented dynamite was also the man behind the Nobel Prizes for achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and for peace. While I wish that Wargin had chosen to discuss Nobels youth, the information presented about his inventions and scientific discoveries fascinated me. It also surprised me that Nobels own brother died in an explosion in one of his workshops researching nitroglycerin. Zachary Pullens action filled illustrations show the bearded Nobel at various points in his busy life and a couple illustrations show rough schematics of two of Nobels inventions, the blasting cap and dynamite. Maybe those children that read the book will be inspired to achieve great things in their own lives. Wargin certainly hopes so. Defeat in the early years of the war led to many problems. The level of care available in the field was affected by the disruption attendant on defeat and rapid retreat. In no theatre of the war, however, did the medical services suffer a complete collapse. The planning of medical arrangements left much to be desired, as in Norway and Malaya, but there was no need for commissions of inquiry, such as those which followed the campaigns in Gallipoli and Mesopotamia during World War One. The most frequent injury sustained by U.S. service members deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan is mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), or concussion, by far most often caused by blast waves from improvised explosive devices or other explosive ordnance. TBI from all causes gives rise to chronic neuroendocrine disorders with an estimated prevalence of 25-50%. The current study expands upon our earlier finding that chronic pituitary gland dysfunction occurs with a similarly high frequency after blast-related concussions. We measured circulating hormone levels and accessed demographic and testing data from two groups of male veterans with hazardous duty experience in Iraq or Afghanistan. Veterans in the mTBI group had experienced one or more blast-related concussions. Members of the deployment control (DC) group encountered similar deployment conditions but had no history of blast-related mTBI. Twelve of 39 (31%) of the mTBI participants and three of 20 (15%) veterans in the DC group screened positive for one or
