Play media An explosive material, also called an explosive, is a reactive substance that contains a great amount of potential energy that can produce an explosion if released suddenly, usually accompanied by the production of light, heat, sound, and pressure. An explosive charge is a measured quantity of explosive material, which may be composed of a single ingredient or a combination of two or more. The potential energy stored in an explosive material may, for example, be chemical energy, such as nitroglycerin or grain dust pressurized gas, such as a gas cylinder or aerosol can nuclear energy, such as in the fissile isotopes uranium-235 and plutonium-239 Explosive materials may be categorized by the speed at which they expand. Materials that detonate (the front of the chemical reaction moves faster through the material than the speed of sound) are said to be high explosives and materials that deflagrate are said to be low explosives. Explosives may also be categorized by their sensitivity. ...

The detection of bacterial-specific volatile metabolites may be a valuable tool to predict infection. Here we applied a real-time mass spectrometric technique to investigate differences in volatile metabolic profiles of oral bacteria that cause periodontitis. We coupled a secondary electrospray ionization (SESI) source to a commercial high-resolution mass spectrometer to interrogate the headspace from bacterial cultures and human saliva. We identified 120 potential markers characteristic for periodontal pathogens Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (n = 13), Porphyromonas gingivalis (n = 70), Tanerella forsythia (n = 30) and Treponema denticola (n = 7) in in vitro cultures. In a second proof-of-principle phase, we found 18 (P. gingivalis, T. forsythia and T. denticola) of the 120 in vitro compounds in the saliva from a periodontitis patient with confirmed infection with P. gingivalis, T. forsythia and T. denticola with enhanced ion intensity compared to two healthy controls. In conclusion, ...
Bioquells scientific research regularly conducts tests to ascertain the effect of hydrogen peroxide vapour (H2O2) on various commonly encountered materials.
In this study, we modified a surface plasmon resonance immunosensor chip with a polymer using surface-initiated atom transfer polymerization (SI-ATRP) for the highly sensitive detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). To immobilize a TNT analogue on the polymer, mono-2-(methacryloyloxy)ethylsuccinate (MES), which has a carboxyl group, was used in this study. However, the anti-TNT antibody may adsorb non-specifically on the polymer surface by an electrostatic interaction because MES is negatively charged. Therefore, a mixed monomer with MES and diethylaminoethylmethacrylate (DEAEM), which has a tertiary amino group and is positively charged, was prepared to obtain electroneutrality for suppressing the nonspecific adsorption. The detection of TNT was performed by inhibition assay using the polymer surface. To ensure high sensitivity to TNT, the affinity between the surface and the antibody was optimized by controlling the density of the initiator for ATRP by mixing two types of self-assembled monolayer

An apparatus and process for hydrogen peroxide vapor sterilization of medical instruments and similar devices make use of hydrogen peroxide vapor released from an inorganic hydrogen peroxide complex. The peroxide vapor can be released at room temperature and atmospheric pressure; however, the pressure used can be less than 50 torr and the temperature greater than 86 C. to facilitate the release of hydrogen peroxide vapor. The heating rate can be greater than 5 C. Optionally, a plasma can be used in conjunction with the vapor.
Explosives can easily generate the high energy and the ultra-high pressure. The performance of explosive depends on its own chemical poperty, the detonation wave usually propagates with the stable value of pressure behind it, the pressure is so called Chapman-Jouguet (C-J) pressure. If the higher pressure over C-J pressure can be expected to occur, it is very effective for a development of new materials. We take notice of Overdriven Detonation (following O.D.D.) phenomenon that expects to bring out higher detonation pressures than C-J pressure of explosive. This phenomenon can be occurred when the flyer plate of high velocity impacts the explosive, or the explosive compressed by the advance detonates, or converging detonation of the explosive ...

0004] The training of sniffer dogs and the calibration of measuring instruments have to be carried out using the genuine material. Substitutes cannot be used for this reason. Triacetone triperoxide (TATP) can be obtained in the synthesis as TATP hydrate which is easier to handle and has a slightly lower brisance. On the other hand, pure TATP is virtually unusable because of the friction- and shock-sensitivity and ignition by electrostatic charges as described by R. Meyer et al., in Explosives, 6th Ed. Wiley-VCH, Weinheim (2007) and J. C. Oxley et al., Propellants, Explosives, Pyrotechnics 30:127 (2005). 0115] Deflagration--The chemical decomposition (burning) of a material in which the reaction front advances into the reacted material at less than sonic velocity. Deflagration can be a very rapid combustion which, under confinement, can result in an explosion, although generally it implies the burning of a substance with self-contained oxygen. The reaction zone advances into the unreacted material at less than the velocity of sound in the material. In this case, heat is transferred from the reacted to the unreacted material by conduction and convection. The burning rate for a deflagration is usually less than 2,000 meters/second. [0117] Detonation--Also called an initiation sequence or a firing train, this is the sequence of events which cascade from relatively low levels of energy to cause a chain reaction to initiate the final explosive material or main charge. They can be either low or high explosive trains. It is a chemical reaction that moves through an explosive material at a velocity ...
Sniffer dogs could be used for the early detection of lung cancer, according to new research published in the European Respiratory Journal.. The study, carried out by researchers from Schillerhoehe Hospital in Germany, is the first to find that sniffer dogs can reliably detect lung cancer.. Lung cancer is the second most frequent form of cancer in men and women across Europe with over 340,000 deaths per year. It is also the most common cause of death from cancer worldwide.. The disease is not strongly associated with any symptoms and early detection is often by chance. Current methods of detection are unreliable and scientists have been working on using exhaled breath specimens from patients for future screening tests.. This method relies on identifying volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are linked to the presence of cancer. Although many different technological applications have been developed, this method is still difficult to apply in a clinical setting as patients arent allowed to smoke ...
LONDON: Al-Qaida is laying deadly booby traps by equipping its female suicide bombers with explosive breast implants that are impossible to be detected at airport security checkpoints, British intelligence agency MI5 has claimed.Women suicide bombers recruited by al-Qaida are known to have had the explosives inserted in their breasts under techniques similar to breast enhancing surgery, the British newspaper Sun quoted terrorist expert Joseph Farah, as saying.. The lethal explosives called PETN are inserted inside plastic shapes during the operation, before the breast is then sewn up, he added.. According to the MI5, al-Qaida doctors have been trained at some of Britains leading teaching hospitals before returning to their own countries to perform the surgical procedures.. The intelligence agency has also discovered that extremists are inserting the explosives into the buttocks of some male suicide bombers.. Top surgeons have confirmed the feasibility of the explosive implants.. Properly ...

Dense Inert Metal Explosive (DIME) is an experimental type of explosive that has a relatively small but effective blast radius. It is manufactured by producing a homogeneous mixture of an explosive material (such as phlegmatized HMX or RDX) and small particles of a chemically inert material such as tungsten. It is intended to limit the distance at which the explosion causes damage, to avoid collateral damage in warfare. The phrase inert metal refers to a metal that is not chemically active and therefore not part of the chemical reaction that causes the explosion, as opposed to some metals, such as aluminium, that do form part of the chemical reaction-e.g. in Tritonal. An emerging criticism of DIME weapons is that they might turn out to have strong biological effects in those who are hit by the micro-shrapnel from these types of explosives. DIME mixtures have been studied for some time, but apparently only began to be adopted for weapons after the year 2000. DIME weapons consist of a carbon fiber ...

In this paper, the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is applied to simulate the high explosive (HE) explosion which consists of detonation and dispersion process. The combination of meshless and Lagrangian nature inherent in the SPH methodology avoids the disadvantages of traditional numerical methods in treating large deformations, large inhomogeneities and tracing free surfaces in the extremely transient explosion process. Four numerical examples are presented with comparisons from different sources. The presented numerical examples involve in various HE explosion scenarios of arbitrary charge shape and different detonation orientations. The simulation results show that the presented SPH methodology can give good prediction for both the magnitude and form of the detonation wave as well as the pressure transient in the explosion process. Major physics of the HE explosion can be well captured in the simulation. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved ...

Probably most of you know that Alfred Nobel was the inventor of the dynamite. Alfred derived his special interest to explosives from his father, Immanuel Nobel, who used to experiment with gunpowder (the only usable explosive by the time).. In 1884 the Italian chemist Ascanio Sobrero invented the nitroglycerin, which was a much more powerful explosive but it was also very unstable, which made handling or transporting it very dangerous. Alfred Nobel was convinced that nitroglycerin was the future of explosives despite the fact that large gunpowder firms like Du Pont were not investing in the technology. Shortly after Sobreros finding he started experimenting with different materials to make the nitroglycerin more stable and thus useful. Some people defend that Nobels invention happened casually when some nitroglycerin leaked into a material called kieselgurh. The reality is that the dynamite was fruit of an extensive trial and error process and careful scientific analysis of the chemical ...
The aerobic biodegradability of the high explosive CL-20 by activated sludge and the white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium has been investigated. Although activated sludge is not effective in degrading CL-20 directly, it can mineralize the alkaline hydrolysis products. Phanerochaete chrysosporium degrades CL-20 in the presence of supplementary carbon and nitrogen sources. Biodegradation studies were conducted using various nutrient media under diverse conditions. Variables included the CL-20 concentration; levels of carbon (as glycerol) and ammonium sulfate and yeast extract as sources of nitrogen. Cultures that received CL-20 at the time of inoculation transformed CL-20 completely under all nutrient conditions studied. When CL-20 was added to pre-grown cultures, degradation was limited. The extent of mineralization was monitored by the 14CO2 time evolution; up to 51% mineralization was achieved when the fungus was incubated with [14C]-CL-20. The kinetics of CL-20 biodegradation by Phanerochaete

Solvent vapors may be heavier than air. Stagnant air may cause vapors to build up and travel along the ground to an ignition source which may result in a flash back to the source of the vapors.. ...
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new class of sensor for specific DNA sequences based on molecular beacons (MB) immobilized on the internal surfaces of suspended core optical fibers (SCF). MBs, a type of hairpin structured DNA probe, are attached on the surface of the SCF core using a fuzzy nanoassembly process used in conjunction with a biotin-streptavidin-biotin surface attachment strategy. The proposed DNA sensor detects complementary DNA sequences (cDNA) while discriminating sequences differing from the target by just one base. This enables the detection of DNA in unprecedentedly small sample volumes (nL scale) and is, to the best of our knowledge, the first specific DNA detection using a DNA probe immobilized within a microstructured optical fiber.. ©2012 Optical Society of America. Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) is a synthetic toxic explosive compound which was introduced into the environment during the Second World War. Microorganisms have adapted to degrade RDX and the enzymes involved include an unusual cytochrome P450, termed XplA, that is N-terminally-fused to a flavodoxin domain, and a flavodoxin reductase partner, XplB. To discover new RDX-degrading enzymes, selective enrichments were performed on explosive-contaminated soil samples from the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Moldova. Thirteen RDX-degrading bacteria were isolated and all identified as Rhodococcus spp. The xplA gene was identified in all isolates and TNT found to inhibit RDX-degradation. The evolutionary origin of xplA was analysed in eleven aerobic RDX-degrading bacteria belonging to four different genera: Rhodococcus spp., Microbacterium, Gordonia and Williamsia. Only six single nucleotide polymorphisms were found in the xplA/xplB region, emphasising the ...
Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an intestine-inhabiting bacterium associated with many severe disease outbreaks worldwide. It may enter the soil environment with the excreta of infected animals (e.g., horses, cattle, chickens) and humans. Earthworms can protect themselves against invading pathogens because of their efficient innate defense system. Identification of differential proteomic responses to E. coli O157:H7 may provide a better understanding of the survival mechanisms of the earthworm Eisenia fetida that lives in E. coli O157:H7-polluted environments. Whole earthworm extracts, collected at days 7, 14, 21, and 28 after E. coli O157:H7 stress, were analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and quantitative image analysis. In total, 124 proteins demonstrated significant regulation at least at one time point, and 52 proteins were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometry and database searching. Compared with control samples, 11 ...
Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) is a serious environmental pollutant on military land. This compound is the most widely used explosive and pollution has arisen primarily as the result of military training, along with munition manufacturing and disassembly processes. This toxic explosive is recalcitrant to degradation in the environment and leaches rapidly into groundwater, where accumulation in aquifers is threatening drinking water supplies (Clausen, et al., 2004). While plants have only limited degradative activity towards RDX, microorganisms, including Rhodococcus rhodochrous 11Y, have been isolated from contaminated land. Despite the presence of microbial RDX-metabolising activity in contaminated soils, the persistence of RDX in leachate from contaminated soil indicates that this activity or biomass is insufficient, limiting its use to remediate polluted soils. Bacterial activity in the rhizosphere is of magnitudes greater than in the surrounding soil, and the roots of grass ...
The biochemical responses of the earthworms, Eisenia fetida, exposed to a series of Cd concentrations (0.00, 1.25, 2.50, 5.00 and 10.00 mg Cd2+ kg−1 soil) for up to 8 weeks were investigated, aiming to evaluate the sublethal effects of Cd with long exposure and to explore the potential for applying these responses as biomarkers to indicate the Cd-contaminated soil. The following biochemical parameters were determined: cytochrome P450 (CYP) contents and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione-s-transferase (GST). Cadmium concentrations in all earthworms were apparently accumulated in 4 weeks, and showed minor changes in weeks 6-8 compared to the first 4 weeks. CYP presented a significant elevation in 2-4 weeks and a decline in 6-8 weeks in each treated group. The activities of SOD and CAT showed an obvious increase with exposure of 6-8 weeks while their levels were not affected in 4 weeks in each treated group. GST activity revealed significant activation ...
The Eisenia fetida was bought from an agricultural farm at virudhunagar. All trays with earthworms were kept in a dark room. Mortality was recorded weekly for 6 weeks.

While fireworks are a traditional part of our Independence Day celebrations, decades of tragic experience show us that the misuse of fireworks can have devastating consequences. Each year, fireworks cause an estimated 25,000 fires, resulting in nearly 9,000 injuries and direct property loss of over $17 million nationwide. The burns caused by the intense heat of fireworks leave lifetime, disfiguring scars. Eye injuries, many leading to permanent vision loss, account for 20 percent of fireworks injuries. Finally, on average, 7 people each year are killed directly by fireworks. Too often, consumers do not recognize the inherent dangers of fireworks and treat them as toys. Even sparklers (pyrotechnic devices that look harmless but arent) cause hundreds of injuries every year. By avoiding illegal and dangerous fireworks and using legal fireworks responsibly, you can help ensure a fun and safer experience for everyone.. The Law Any firework that explodes, emits a flame or sparks higher than 12 feet, ...

With Winnipeg quarterback Buck Pierce injured yet again and backup Joey Elliot out for the year with a torn ACL making a tackle after an interception*, the Bombers are somewhat pooched in the quarterback department. This article goes over the problem and mentions the next three quarterbacks on the depth chart, Alex Brink, Justin Goltz and Brandon Summers. The Bombers picking up former Ticat third stringer Adam Trafalis wouldnt be a bad idea. Trafalis at least has been around the CFL for a while now. Sure the Ticats picked Jason Boltus as their third string quarterback over Trafalis this year, but with an excellent defence, you might be able to win some games with someone whos been in the league longer than training camp, with the added bonus of making Matt Dunnigan happy. With the way Bomber quarterbacks are dropping, they could soon be playing raw rookie fourth and fifth stringers. Hopefully against the Ticats ...
WINNIPEG - Nic Grigsby ran 26 yards for a touchdown with just over two minutes left to lift the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 24-16 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday.. Grigsby capped off a six-play, 74-yard drive that was helped when the Alouettes were called for pass interference.. Winnipeg (6-3) defensive back Maurice Leggett then intercepted Montreal quarterback Jonathan Crompton with 1:44 left in the game, a pick upheld despite a challenge for a pass-interference call.. Bombers kicker Lirim Hajrullahu then booted his third field goal of the game from 16 yards out to make it 24-16 at 14:07.. Leggett had another interception that he took to the end zone with 36 seconds left, but it was wiped out by a Bombers penalty.. The victory halted Winnipegs two-game losing streak, while Montreal (1-7) has now lost six straight. The teams didnt give the 29,881 fans at Investors Group Field much to cheer about in the first half, with Montreal taking a 6-1 lead into the break. But the second half ...
Recommended monitoring procedures:If this product contains ingredients with exposure limits, personal, workplace atmosphere or biological monitoring may be required to determine the effectiveness of the ventilation or other control measures and/or the necessity to use respiratory protective equipment. If user operations generate dust, fumes, gas, vapour or mist, use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation or other engineering controls to keep worker exposure to airborne contaminants below any recommended or statutory limits. The engineering controls also need to keep gas, vapour or dust concentrations below any lower explosive limits. Use explosion-proof ventilation equipment.Environmental exposure ...
As part of the design of the modification of nanoporous platforms with polymer brushes, PMAA brushes were grafted from flat silicon surfaces using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP).. Chapter 4 describes growth kinetics of the pH-responsive polymer layers were investigated in mixtures of water and methanol with different ratios. The pH-induced swelling and collapse of the brush were characterized by in situ ellipsometry, and showed a fast and reversible switching of the PMAA layers with swelling factors that increased by decreasing the methanol content of the atom transfer radical polymerization mixture. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra recorded in titration experiments indicated that the effective pKa of the PMAA films were shifted to the value of 6.5 ± 0.2 from the bulk pKa value of PMAA. The shift is due to ion confinement effects in the dense brush, and brings the conformational switching of PMAA brushes closer to physiological conditions. This is ...

The nitramines are the most recently introduced class of organic nitrate explosives. The most prominent member of this class is RDX (research department explosive; hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5 triazine, which is also known as cyclonite); HMX (high melting explosive; octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7 tetrazocine), nitroguanidine, and tetryl are also significant nitramines
In the early years after the discovery of nitroglycerine, it was rarely used as it was very difficult to predict the conditions under which nitroglycerine would explode - making its use extremely dangerous. In Stockholm, a chemist named Alfred Nobel spent many years working out how to utilise nitroglycerine as an effective explosive. He mixed it with clay to make a thick paste which was not shock-sensitive, and would only detonate when required. These explosive, but safe-to-handle sticks of clay were called dynamite. The invention of dynamite enable many new industrial applications of nitroglycerine, such as demolition and mining. On the down side, when the First World War began, these nitroglycerine based explosives, including dynamite, were contributory to the mass destruction of battlefields like Ypres. As he was a pacifist and did not want to be remembered for creating such explosives that caused so much bloodshed, Nobel created the Nobel Prizes for achievements in science, medicine and ...
This publication provides guidance to organisations involved with the planning, design, delivery, operation and maintenance, decommissioning or regulation of projects in the marine environment on the assessment and management of unexploded ordnance (UXO) risks. The guide focuses principally upon managing those risks that might be generated by UXO containing high explosives (HE), including abandoned explosive ordnance (AXO) such as sea-dumped munitions or abandoned ship or aircraft wrecks, but those munitions containing chemical warfare agents are outside of its main scope. Although the guide is focused on the marine environment, the generic principles of the guidance and many of the geophysical survey techniques and risk mitigation approaches will also have applicability to other water bodies, such as very large inland lakes or reservoirs. About a dozen US soldiers witness looters stealing high explosives from the Al Qaqaa ammunition site in northern Babil Province over a span of several days. The Al Qaqaa facility is where hundreds of tons of some of Iraqs most powerful conventional explosives have been stored since 1991 (see May 2003); at least nine of its bunkers were unsealed by US troops days before (see April 18, 2003). In October 2004 the International Atomic Energy Agency will inform the US that around 380 tons of high explosives from Qaqaa are missing (see October 10, 2004 and October 25, 2004). The US soldiers, Army reservists and National Guardsmen, will say in November 2004 that they are unable to prevent the looting because they are drastically outnumbered. Some of the soldiers call their commanders to request help in securing the site, but receive no reply. The soldiers later describe watching Iraqis heave explosives from unsecured bunkers into Toyota pickup trucks. They try, with little success, to deter the ...
Ryazan bomb detonator. [Source: Cryptome.org]On the evening of September 22, 1999, several residents of an apartment block in Ryazan, a city about a hundred miles south of Moscow, observe three strangers at the entrance of their building. The two young men and a woman are carrying large sacks into the basement. The residents notice that the cars plate has been partially covered with paper, although they can still see a Moscow license plate number underneath. They decide to call the local police. After several bombings of apartment buildings in Moscow earlier in the month (see September 9, 1999 and September 13, 1999), their vigilance is understandable. When the police arrive, around 9:00 p.m., they uncover what appears to be huge bomb: three sacks of sugar filled with a granular powder, connected to a detonator and a timing device set for 5:30 a.m. The bomb squad uses a gas testing device to confirm that it is explosive material: it appears to be hexagen, the military explosive that is believed ...
Abstract ZnO-poly(2-cinnamoyloxyethyl methacrylate) and ZnO-poly(2-cinnamoyloxyethyl methacrylate)-b-poly[(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] have been prepared by atom transfer polymerization initiated through a 2-bromoisobutyryl or bromoethyl group linked onto the ZnO nanoparticle surface (ZnO-BIBB, ZnO-BEI). The structure and morphology of the hybrids were characterized using Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, fluorescence and UV spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron (TEM) and atomic force microscopy. The existence of nanoparticles with diameters varying between 40 and 100 nm was evident in the TEM images of the pure ZnO, ZnO-PCEMA-Br-2 and the diblock copolymer. Under an excitation of 340 nm, these materials exhibit a broad emission band at around 390 nm, which was associated with the presence of ZnO in the organic matrix. Graphical abstract ...

Canadas military mission in Afghanistan ended Thursday, hours before suicide bombers attacked crowds at Kabul airport, killing several American marines, and leaving an unknown number of Canadians and their families trapped. The withdrawal occurred as Canada and its military allies braced for imminent attack and to allow for the American-led mission to eventually meet its Aug. 31 deadline for departure. The Associated Press reported that U.S. officials said 11 American marines and one navy medic were killed in the attack by a pair of suicide bombers and gunmen in the crowd clamouring outside Kabul airport. Its not known how many other U.S. personnel were injured. An unknown number of Canadian military personnel stayed behind to assist the American withdrawal, and all were safe and accounted for after the Thursday bombing, the Canadian Forces said on Twitter. Canadas departure, its fiery aftermath, and the concerns about those left behind laid bare the raw emotional scars of the firmly ...
MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somali militants attacked a restaurant near Mogadishus seat of government for the second time in less than a year on Saturday, detonating two large blasts that killed at least 15 people and wounded nearly two dozen, police said. Officials said the attack included a car bomb blast and a suicide bomber who entered The Village eatery. The second blast was caused by a suicide bomber posing as a first responder after the car bomb exploded, the African Union military force in Somalia said in a statement.
