The development of technology capable to imitating the process of human thinking and led to a new branch of computer science named the expert system. One of the problem that can be solved by an expert system is selecting hypercholesterolemia drugs. Drug selection starts from find the symptoms and then determine the best drug for the patient. This is consist with the mechanism of forward chaining which starts from searching for information about the symptoms, and then try to illustrate the conclusions. To accommodate the missing fact, expert systems can be complemented with the Bayes theorem that provides a simple rule for calculating the conditional probability so the accuracy of the method approaches the accuracy of the experts. This reseacrh uses 30 training data and 76 testing data of medical record that use hypercholesterolemia drugs from Tugurejo Hospital of Semarang. The variable are common symptoms and some hypercholesterolemia drugs. This research obtained a selection of ...

Many of the early expert systems were developed by large consulting and system integration firms such as Andersen Consulting. These firms already had well tested conventional waterfall methodologies (e.g. Method/1 for Andersen) that they trained all their staff in and that were virtually always used to develop software for their clients. One trend in early expert systems development was to simply apply these waterfall methods to expert systems development. Another issue with using conventional methods to develop expert systems was that due to the unprecedented nature of expert systems they were one of the first applications to adopt rapid application development methods that feature iteration and prototyping as well as or instead of detailed analysis and design. In the 1980s few conventional software methods supported this type of approach. The final issue with using conventional methods to develop expert systems was the need for knowledge acquisition. Knowledge acquisition refers to the process ...
An expert system adapted data network guidance engine. The invention allows an agent to interact with a customer and to provide selection and recommendation of data network products and/or services for the customer. The invention allows for the use of agents of varying skill levels, including relatively low skill level, without suffering deleterious performance. The data network guidance engine is operable to perform generation and selection of configurations that are generated using various heuristics. If desired, numerous iterations are performed within each of the heuristic operations. The data network guidance engine is operable to select recommended configurations from among a number of potential options. In addition, compatible configurations may also be identified. The data network guidance engine is one of the underlying engines within the expert system that allows the agent to provide real time interaction with a customer and to provide a real time recommended solution to that customer.

This study presents a novel intelligent Fuzzy Genetic Differential Evolutionary model for the optimization of a fuzzy expert system applied to heart disease prediction in order to reduce the risk of heart disease. To this end, a fuzzy expert system has been proposed for the prediction of heart disease. The proposed model can be used as a tool to assist physicians. In order to: (1) tune the parameters of the membership function of the fuzzy expert system, (2) improve its performance and (3) increase its accuracy, the Genetic Algorithm combined with the Differential Evolution Algorithm has been applied to the fuzzy expert system. The proposed hybrid models, Fuzzy-GA, Fuzzy-DE, and Fuzzy-GA-DE were evaluated using ROC curve analysis and 10- fold cross-validation methods. In order to evaluate and validate the performance of the model, we applied it to a dataset including 380 samples collected from Parsian Hospital in Karaj. According to the results, the accuracy of the fuzzy expert system was 85.52% ...
Hospital-acquired infections are responsible for an increase in patient mortality and costs. Their detection is essential to permit better infection control. We developed an expert system specifically to detect infections in pediatric patients. The expert system is implemented at LDS Hospital that has a level three newborn intensive care unit and well baby units. We describe how the knowledge base of the expert system was developed, implemented, and validated in a retrospective study. The results of the system were compared to manual reviewer results. The expert system had a sensitivity of 84.5% and specificity of 92.8% in detecting hospital-acquired infections when compared to a physician reviewer. The Cohens kappa between the expert system and the physician reviewer was 0.62 (p < .001 ...
In this thesis we study artificial intelligence methods, rule-based expert systems in particular, for the task of automatically designing customized medical prostheses. Here, the term design denotes the shaping or modeling of the prostheses and not their functional design. The challenge of the task at hand lies in designing prostheses that fit perfectly to the anatomy of the patient, and in many cases have to support additional functionality. Hence, each prosthesis has to be unique. Therefore, medical prostheses are usually designed starting with a template of the patients anatomy, e. g. acquired using CT data or scanned and digitized molds. In this thesis we assume that the template data is given as a triangle mesh in 3-D. To address the challenge of automatically designing medical prostheses, we develop an expert system framework consisting of an expert system shell, a knowledge base and a feature detection unit. The framework is integrated into an existing modeling software. In the ...

A computer network alarm and control system for use in a network comprising a plurality of platforms susceptible to failure comprises a notification system coupled to the network of platforms for receiving an alarm signal from the platforms and outputting a notification identifying a platform indicating an alarm, a qualification of the alarm and a severity of the alarm and an expert system including an inference engine coupled to the notification system, the inference engine having an associated knowledge base for outputting an appropriate resolution to the notification system. An optional explanation facility system communicates with the inference engine of the expert system, the explanation facility system, responsive to a query, outputting an explanation for the appropriate resolution. The expert system is preferably frame-based, having frames for software, hardware and middleware faults and errors, each frame having slot names and values, the slot names including the identity of the platform (or
The present invention tests computer systems for defects that are able to cause performance and functional problems. An agent application is first installed on a users system. The agent application then retrieves problem data from the expert system library pertinent to the users operating environment. The agent application tests the users system for each problem description within a downloaded data structure from the expert system library. If a problem is discovered, a script attempts to remediate the problem and/or notifies the user, describing the issue. If an unknown problem arises, a feedback mechanism expands the expert system library by sending a notification that a problem was discovered. The feedback is then utilized to increase the total knowledge in the expert system library. Then when another user with a similar or the same setup is tested, the agent application will recognize the issue and will take the appropriate remedial actions.

Chair of the Motor Accidents Solicitors Society, Craig Budsworth, said at the organisations annual conference, that it may be that some medical experts do not sign up to the MedCo board where they will be assigned cases. He said that some medical experts may be reticent in joining up because they have already spent much time gaining qualifications and to have to pay a fee to join the scheme is not a straightforward incentive when it is unclear just how many cases they will get.. He said: [Experts] are going to have to prove that they are capable of examining people with these types of injuries. This may well prove more problematic as experts may well say, cant you read my full title?. He added that by appearing on a list there will be nothing that will differentiate one medical expert from the next and if there is a possibility of never receiving instructions - why bother with the fee?. The conference was attended by doctors who confirmed that they are still uncertain as to how work from ...

High resolution two-dimensional gel electrophoresis is a very powerful biochemical tool for analysis of complex protein mixtures. In well defined situations, protein maps, obtained from tissue biopsies or biological fluids by this technique, can be automatically analyzed by computer. Some polypeptide patterns are the fingerprints of diseases. Applying clustering algorithm and learning techniques, the prototype expert system MELANIE recognized patterns and associated the correct diagnosis to the specific pattern.
Practical Implementation of Seismic Probabilistic Risk Assessment. Many techniques for seismic probabilistic risk assessment have been developed by university researchers over the last decade. This paper reports on a study being conducted to determine why the techniques developed over the last decade have not beem implemented by practicing engineers and to determine the feasibility of developing an easy to use, practical to apply, computer program to help achieve implementation. Initial results indicate that for many classes of structures personal computer implementation is possible, making use of the sophisticated analysis techniques economic. Also, a prototype expert system is being developed to aid structural engineers with little or no background in probabilistic methods in developing the required input data and a new approach for evaluating dollar losses based on ductility demand and ductility capacity is being developed.

Areas of application. 1. Chess having fun. Chess is a video game which has actually been using artificial intelligence to produce better systems in game playing. Computer system is essentially an electronic tool which approves instructions from the user and also services information to produce outcomes. In typical computing data sources are utilized to save portions of data which eventually give valuable information. In AI, knowledge bases are used, which can keep information through reasonings and also discussions with the individual as well as likewise update themselves. Chess is a video game where actions and also placements are of wonderful significance. When a human chess gamer functions, he will make the moves based upon previous knowledge gotten or by intuition. Where as in computer system substitute games, thousands of steps are computed by the computer system using brute force technique where the most ideal move is chosen. When a human plays chess, it is based upon experience as well as ...
The results of this study indicated that the VITEK 2 system and AES could be used on the majority of clinical isolates encountered in a typical university-based laboratory for identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing with little or no input from laboratory staff concerning the interpretation of results. Of the 259 isolates included in this study, 94.6% were definitively identified by VITEK 2 and 74.6% had no inconsistencies between the identification of the strain and the antimicrobial susceptibility results. Of the 65 strains for which a correction was identified by AES, 58.5% required only a therapeutic correction to the susceptibility results. Most of these were due to the failure of the VITEK 2 system to detect β-lactam resistance in organisms possessing an intrinsic β-lactamase-a failure common to test systems that are rapid or involve small inocula (7). The AES has been designed to look for such problems in the data and correct them when found. However, if false ...
In this paper we present several expert systems that predict the class identity of the modeled compounds, based on a preprocessed spectral database. The expert systems were built using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and are designed to predict if an unknown compound has the toxicological activity of amphetamines (stimulant and hallucinogen), or whether it is a nonamphetamine. In attempts to circumvent the laws controlling drugs of abuse, new chemical structures are very frequently introduced on the black market. They are obtained by slightly modifying the controlled molecular structures by adding or changing substituents at various positions on the banned molecules. As a result, no substance similar to those forming a prohibited class may be used nowadays, even if it has not been specifically listed. Therefore, reliable, fast and accessible systems capable of modeling and then identifying similarities at molecular level, are highly needed for epidemiological, clinical, and forensic purposes. Even before the 3D printing process starts, the expert system is supposed to provide recommendations on which material, which layer thickness, and which layer orientation are best suited to achieve the highest possible transmission - in other words, the highest possible permeability for the laser beam. Thanks to this preliminary work, it will be possible to weld the printed components optimally afterward.. Using AI to adapt the process to the component. In addition, the scientists want to develop a method to measure the transmission with spatial resolution. This involves determin-ing for an individual component at which points the laser beam is transmitted and to what extent. This data will then be used to control the laser transmission welding process with the help of the expert system.. If the laser beam is less transmitted at a certain point, the laser power must be increased. If the component is more light-transmissive at another point, lower laser power is sufficient. The researchers goal ...

Comprehensible explanations of probabilistic reasoning are a prerequisite for wider acceptance of Bayesian methods in expert systems and decision support systems. A study of human reasoning under uncertainty suggests two different strategies for explaining probabilistic reasoning: The first, qualitative belief propagation, traces the qualitative effect of evidence through a belief network from one variable to the next. This propagation algorithm is an alternative to the graph reduction algorithms of Wellman (1988) for inference in qualitative probabilistic networks. It is based on a qualitative analysis of intercausal reasoning, which is a generalization of Pearls explaining away, and an alternative to Wellmans definition of qualitative synergy. The other, Scenario-based reasoning, involves the generation of alternative causal stories accounting for the evidence. Comparing a few of the most probable scenarios provides an approximate way to explain the results of probabilistic reasoning. ...

Effective interaction of farmers expertise and expert knowledge has been a special point of attention for this study. The objectives of the study were to describe the process of interaction between farmers and experts in improving the use of acid sulphate soils and to point out difficulties encountered. Actual conditions for four major areas were described including variabilities. Four representative areas: Tan Thanh, Tri Ton, Phung Hiep, and Hong Dan in the Mekong Delta, Viet Nam were selected for this study. Physical conditions were defined in terms of soil properties, as reflected by soil classification, and hydrological conditions were defined by climate data including flooding. Methods for land improvement in different areas were first defined by describing and analyzing measures taken by farmers, and by next developing schemes for improvement, using expert knowledge. These schemes were expressed by decision trees as a part of expert systems. But many questions were left and a series of ...

Our study contributes new findings to the understanding of how a CDSS is used in the initial management of a common symptom. Despite use of the OMA CDSS in 86 % of consultations for which it was available, there was little evidence of impact on medication prescribing or on investigation choice. Through qualitative data analysis we gained an in-depth understanding of the reasons for this discrepancy. We identified problems in entering patient data into the CDSS. These included difficulties in classification of symptoms and risk factors, and in the incorporation of all available clinical information emerging during the consultation. In the majority of observed cases, the CDSS was used after the patient had left the room. Structural and practical barriers to the use of the CDSS included the availability of investigations and the prescribing competencies of the clinicians. Analysis of observational data revealed how clinicians privileged their clinical expertise over CDSS advice, responding to CDSS ...
The diagnosis of many diseases can be often formulated as a decision problem; uncertainty affects these problems so that many computerized Diagnostic Decision Support Systems (in the following, DDSSs) have been developed to aid the physician in interpreting clinical data and thus to improve the quality of the whole process. Fuzzy logic, a well established attempt at the formalization and mechanization of human capabilities in reasoning and deciding with noisy information, can be profitably used. Recently, we informally proposed a general methodology to automatically build DDSSs on the top of fuzzy knowledge extracted from data. We carefully refine and formalize our methodology that includes six stages, where the first three stages work with crisp rules, whereas the last three ones are employed on fuzzy models. Its strength relies on its generality and modularity since it supports the integration of alternative techniques in each of its stages. The methodology is designed and implemented in the form of a

In Mind Over Machine (1986), written during the heyday of expert systems, Dreyfus analyzed the difference between human expertise and the programs that claimed to capture it. This expanded on ideas from What Computers Cant Do, where he had made a similar argument criticizing the cognitive simulation school of AI research practiced by Allen Newell and Herbert A. Simon in the 1960s. Dreyfus argued that human problem solving and expertise depend on our background sense of the context, of what is important and interesting given the situation, rather than on the process of searching through combinations of possibilities to find what we need. Dreyfus would describe it in 1986 as the difference between knowing-that and knowing-how, based on Heideggers distinction of present-at-hand and ready-to-hand.[14] Knowing-that is our conscious, step-by-step problem solving abilities. We use these skills when we encounter a difficult problem that requires us to stop, step back and search through ideas one ...

This paper presents a computer-aided design (CAD) module able to analyze different manufacturing configurations of tubes used in mechanical assemblies, such as exhaust system manifolds. It can be included in the knowledge-based expert system category and has been implemented into a CAD platform as a dedicated module able to take into account manufacturing requirements related to tube bending, hydroforming, and cutting. The experts knowledge, in terms of set of rules and criteria, has been implemented by means of the automation tools of CATIAV5R10 according to the so-called methodological formal approach. The resulting module is able to join different tubes starting from their geometrical models, obtaining a set of manufacturing alternatives. Each of them is verified with respect to collisions with a bending machine and also in terms of hydroforming process feasibility. Only those solutions that satisfy these checks are accepted as feasible and ranked according to three evaluation criteria ...

Case-based reasoning (CBR)-driven medical diagnostic systems demand a critical mass of up-to-date diagnostic-quality cases that depict the problem-solving methodology of medical experts. In practical terms, procurement of CBR-compliant cases is quite challenging, as this requires medical experts to map their experiential knowledge to an unfamiliar computational formalism. In this paper, we propose a novel medical knowledge acquisition approach that leverages routinely generated electronic medical records (EMRs) as an alternate source for CBR-compliant cases. We present a methodology to autonomously transform XML-based EMR to specialized CBR-compliant cases for CBR-driven medical diagnostic systems. Our multi-stage methodology features: (a) collection of heterogeneous EMR from Internet-accessible EMR repositories via intelligent agents, (b) automated transformation of both the structure and content of generic EMR to specialized CBR-compliant cases, and (c) inductive estimation of the weight of each case

Cognitive and Emotional Information Processing techniques have encountered a large success within the scientific community, specially due to the impact they naturally have in diverse application fields as commerce, tourism, education and health. A wide number of advanced solutions have been proposed on purpose spanning from User/Web Interfaces and Mobile Computing to Robotics, Ambient Intelligence, and Computer Support to Collaborative Work/Learning. The objective is devoted to adequately interpret humans opinions, tastes and needs and consequently provide not only useful direct feedback to them but also a valid and natural support to the interactions they can have between themselves and with smart cooperative environments. This asks for development of expert systems, able to manage large amount of information coming from sensory activity, to intelligently process it, and to promptly and knowledgeably respond to human actions according to natural interaction standards and by means of suitable ...

The main idea of this data set is to prepare the algorithm of the expert system, which will perform the presumptive diagnosis of two diseases of urinary system. It will be the example of diagnosing of the acute inflammations of urinary bladder and acute nephritises. For better understanding of the problem let us consider definitions of both diseases given by medics. Acute inflammation of urinary bladder is characterised by sudden occurrence of pains in the abdomen region and the urination in form of constant urine pushing, micturition pains and sometimes lack of urine keeping. Temperature of the body is rising, however most often not above 38C. The excreted urine is turbid and sometimes bloody. At proper treatment, symptoms decay usually within several days. However, there is inclination to returns. At persons with acute inflammation of urinary bladder, we should expect that the illness will turn into protracted form ...
NAKASEKE, Uganda. Since 1983, China has sent over 18 medical teams to Uganda consisting of a total of 200 experts.. The teams, with the support from Chinese companies, have traversed different parts of the country, providing the much needed health care.. Over the past 35 years, the Chinese medical team has treated thousands of Ugandan patients. Besides working in the hospital, we give training to interns and staff, said Cong Linhai, head of the medical team.. Zheng Zhuqiang, Chinese Ambassador to Uganda told a gathering at Kapeeka Secondary School that besides trade and economic relations, China also cares about a healthy population.. Mary Nabunya, 61-year-old, has had internal chest pain for a long time. Visits to her village health center in Kakoola in the central Ugandan district of Nakaseke have not helped as there are constant reports of drug stock-outs and lack of specialists.. When Nabunya heard that a Chinese medical team was visiting a neighboring village for a one-day medical camp, ...
Since Mikhail Lesin was found dead in a D.C. hotel room in 2015, one question has persisted: did the onetime Kremlin insider really die of blunt-force trauma caused by drunken falls? Multiple forensic experts who studied autopsy records obtained by RFE/RL raise suspicions -- and new questions.
Castellvis statements echo similar utterances made by numerous other medical and scientific experts since 2004. PowerLoom® is the successor to the Loom® knowledge representation system. It provides a language and environment for constructing intelligent, knowledge-based applications. PowerLoom uses a fully expressive, logic-based representation language (a variant of KIF). It uses a natural deduction inference engine that combines forward and backward chaining to derive what logically follows from the facts and rules asserted in the knowledge base. While PowerLoom is not a description logic, it does have a description classifier which uses technology derived from the Loom classifier to classify descriptions expressed in full first order predicate calculus (see paper). PowerLoom uses modules as a structuring device for knowledge bases, and ultra-lightweight worlds to support hypothetical reasoning. To implement PowerLoom we developed a new programming language called STELLA, which is a Strongly Typed, Lisp-like LAnguage that can be translated into Lisp, C++ and Java. PowerLoom is written in STELLA and ...

Lawrence O. Gostin, JD / Faculty director / ONeill Institute for National and Global Health Law / Georgetown University:. It is shameful that Congress has not allocated ample funding to fight Zika. This places women and their babies at risk, and failure to act is unconscionable.. Congress has no greater responsibility than to safeguard the publics health and security. Yet legislators have not solved the issue of needed emergency appropriations to prepare the nation for a looming Zika epidemic. Going forward Congress should create a Public Health Emergency Contingency Fund so that it will no longer play politics with the health and lives of Americans.. If medical doctors dont study physics, why are they called physicians? Before the study of energy and matter branched off, medicine and natural science were unified under the term physic. Thus someone who studied medicine was broadly referred to as a physician.
Dr Ignazio Maria Viola, who headed-up the study, told Sky News that he had generally been impressed by the effectiveness of all the face coverings we tested.. He said: Firstly, you need to have multiple layers to make it effective, and second it is important to seal all gaps (hence it should be tightish) otherwise air will be projected at high speed in directions that we are not aware of and that we cannot control.
