Exocrine gland - Wikipedia
Exocrine glands are glands that produce and secrete substances onto an epithelial surface by way of a duct. Examples of exocrine glands include sweat, salivary, mammary, ceruminous, lacrimal, sebaceous, and mucous. Exocrine glands are one of two types of glands in the human body, the other being endocrine glands, which secrete their products directly into the bloodstream. The liver and pancreas are both exocrine and endocrine glands; they are exocrine glands because they secrete products-bile and pancreatic juice-into the gastrointestinal tract through a series of ducts, and endocrine because they secrete other substances directly into the bloodstream. Exocrine glands contain a glandular portion and a duct portion, the structures of which can be used to classify the gland. The duct portion may be branched (called compound) or unbranched (called simple). The glandular portion may be tubular or acinar, or may be a mix of the two (called tubuloacinar). If the glandular portion branches, then the ...
Optical imaging of Ca2+-evoked fluid secretion by murine nasal submucosal gland serous acinar cells - Lee - 2007 - The Journal...
The molecular identities of the pathways that mediate K+ and Cl− effluxes in serous acinar cells are unknown. CFTR mRNA is expressed in these cells, and immunocytochemistry revealed it to be present near the apical membrane. To examine the role of CFTR in Ca2+-evoked fluid secretion, we employed cells from the cftrtm1Unc−/− mouse and we pharmacologically inhibited CFTR in WT mouse cells. The results demonstrated that mouse nasal acinar cells from both WT and cftrtm1Unc−/− mice, as well as WT cells treated with CFTRinh172, all exhibited similar rates of Cl− efflux in response to muscarinic stimulation. Isolated intact submucosal glands from CF individuals that lack functional CFTR can secrete fluid in response to cholinergic agonists (Joo et al. 2002a), and it was recently shown that intact glands in WT and cftrtm1Unc−/− mice trachea secrete fluid in response to CCh at similar rates (Ianowski et al. 2007). It has remained unclear if cholinergic-induced fluid secretion in CF glands ...

New Microbicidal Functions of Tracheal Glands: Defective Anti-Infectious Response to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Cystic Fibrosis ...
Tracheal glands (TG) may play a specific role in the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis (CF), a disease due to mutations in the cftr gene and characterized by airway inflammation and Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. We compared the gene expression of wild-type TG cells and TG cells with the cftr ΔF508 mutation (CF-TG cells) using microarrays covering the whole human genome. In the absence of infection, CF-TG cells constitutively exhibited an inflammatory signature, including genes that encode molecules such as IL-1α, IL-β, IL-32, TNFSF14, LIF, CXCL1 and PLAU. In response to P. aeruginosa, genes associated with IFN-γ response to infection (CXCL10, IL-24, IFNγR2) and other mediators of anti-infectious responses (CSF2, MMP1, MMP3, TLR2, S100 calcium-binding proteins A) were markedly up-regulated in wild-type TG cells. This microbicidal signature was silent in CF-TG cells. The deficiency of genes associated with IFN-γ response was accompanied by the defective membrane expression of IFNγR2 and altered
Endocrine System - Human Anatomy
Endocrine and exocrine glands are different in that endocrine glands do not have ducts to carry their secretions to specific locations. Exocrine glands usually secrete their products (not hormones or other chemical messengers) into the external environment, while the endocrine glands secrete hormones into the body. Some examples of exocrine glands are sweat glands, salivary glands ...
Bombardier, Siemens in rail merger talks: report - Red Deer Advocate
MONTREAL - Shares of Bombardier were up more than four per cent Tuesday following a report that the company and German-based Siemens AG are in talks to merge their train businesses.. Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources it said were familiar with the matter, reported that the proposed joint venture could be worth at least US$10.6 billion.. Bombardier declined to comment and Siemens couldnt immediately be reached.. Such a deal would require approval from antitrust authorities and could face opposition from unions over concerns about potential job cuts.. Bombardier (TSX:BBD.B) shares rose nine cents at $2.31 in late morning trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.. Last year, Bombardier completed the sale of a 30 per cent stake in its transportation business to Quebec pension fund manager Caisse de depot for US$1.5 billion as it faced financial challenges caused in part by railway delays and the development of the CSeries commercial aircraft and Global 7000 business jet.. Are the B cells cast with the leading part in the Sjogrens syndrome scenario?
The autoimmune exocrinopathy Sjögrens syndrome (SS) is characterized by mononuclear cell (MNC) infiltrates of exocrine glands and overactivity of B lymphocytes. Although T cells have long been perceived as the prime effectors, increasing evidence indicates that the key role is rather served by B cells. Among related abnormalities are rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-SSA/Ro, and anti-SSB/La antibodies (Ab). Also, supporting this view is our finding of an increase in the number of circulating naïve mature B (Bm) cells, with a reciprocal decrease in that of memory B cells. Furthermore, a ratio of Bm2-plus-Bm2 cells to early Bm5-plus-late Bm5 above 5 is diagnostic. This variation partly reflects the migration of active memory B cells into the exocrine glands of the patients, as well as into their skin. More recently, the B-cell-activating factor of the TNF family (BAFF) has been endorsed with a pivotal role in B-cell survival and hence implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmunity. In practice, B cells

1. The sugars and amino sugars of hydrolysates of gastric secretion were determined by gas-liquid chromatography. 2. All the gastric aspirations examined showed on hydrolysis the presence of fucose, galactose, mannose, glucose, galactosamine, glucosamine, N-acetylneuraminic acid and sulphate. 3. Galactose and glucosamine were always found in equimolar amounts, but the galactose/galactosamine ratio in different aspirations was 2:1, 3:1, 4:1 or 5:1. Repeated gastric aspirations of each subject examined showed constant ratios of these carbohydrate components. 4. Fucose and sialic acid appear to be related to glucosamine and galactosamine respectively. 5. The carbohydrate components of extracts from the mucous glands of the body mucosa and antrum did not differ from those of gastric secretion.. ...

Let me give you a bit more information about the fluid. Its produced by the paraurethral glands and is released via tiny ducts into the urethra. From there it can emerge via the urethral opening or be retained and held in the bladder until the next urination.. The paraurethral glands are surrounded by the erectile tissue of the urethral sponge. (Commonly, but incorrectly named the g-spot.) The more stimulation that the sponge gets, the more engorged it becomes, as the erectile capillaries fill with blood. The fluid part of the blood diffuses through the capillary wall and enters glandular tubules. There it mix with the glandular products. Engorgement of the urethral sponges erectile tissue causes more fluid to fill the glands, leading to more profuse ejaculation.. Their claim that FE is a small amount of liquid that occurs solely in the vagina is incorrect. The fluid does come from the female prostate (AKA the urethral sponge). But it is not vaginal lubrication nor does it come from the ...

SS is a systemic autoimmune exocrinopathy characterised by dysfunction of the lachrymal and salivary glands. This decrease in secretory function leads to the symptoms of dry eyes and dry mouth and the objective findings of KCS and xerostomia. Recent studies support the hypothesis that interaction between immune factors and the neuroendocrine system may affect the tear producing mechanism of the exocrine glands. Proinflammatory cytokines may be responsible for damaging secretory glands and the presence of autoantibodies may influence the response of the muscarinic M3 receptors.9,10 Thus, the ability to modulate the immune response and stimulate residual glandular elements provides a new therapeutic opportunity for patients with SS. Systemic corticosteroid treatment may increase salivary and tear secretion, but it is associated with significant long term side effects that outweigh its benefit for this purpose.4 Systemic agents, including antimalarial drugs,11 cyclosporin A,12 methotrexate,13 and ...
Endocrine System - Hypertext Chapter
From the hypertext description in this site, the endocrine system is a collection of glands that secrete chemical messages we call hormones. These signals are passed through the blood to arrive at a target organ, which has cells possessing the appropriate receptor. Exocrine glands (not part of the endocrine system) secrete products that are passed outside the body. Sweat glands, salivary glands, and digestive glands are examples of exocrine glands ...

Dufour Affair - Oxford Scholarship
In 1508 a Savoy official Jean Dufour produced a forged will purporting to have been drawn up by Duke Charles I in 1489, which assigned staggering sums to Bern and Fribourg as a reward for their help against the marquis of Saluzzo in 1486. Why Dufour waited so long to reveal his forgery and what his motives were remain unclear, but the effect was dramatic. Although there were sceptical voices in Bern, both city councils hurried to accept the supposed legacy. In 1511 Dufour produced a second testament, promising 400,000 fl to all the cantons, and a third raised the sum to 800,000 fl. Though these sums were later reduced, they caused Savoy severe financial embarrassment. Of equal significance, however, were the close links revealed with the two cities, where Dufour acquired citizenship, pensions, and handsome lodgings. The duchy of Savoy was relegated to a client of Bern and Fribourg.

WFDC2/HE4 encodes a poorly characterised secretory protein that shares structural similarity to the multifunctional host defence protein, SLPI, through possession of two conserved Whey Acidic Protein/four disulphide-core (WFDC) domains. Like SLPI, WFDC2 is expressed in multiple epithelia within the respiratory tract and although its function remains unresolved, recent evidence supports its role as an antiproteinase. We have previously shown that it is over-expressed in lung diseases characterised by abnormalities of protease/antiprotease balance, including cystic fibrosis. Nothing is known about the distribution of WFDC2 in the mouse. In this study we have systematically localized the protein in normal adult mice as well in a number of mouse models characterised by epithelial remodelling. Strong WFDC2 staining is seen throughout the airway epithelium from the trachea down to the smallest airways. Staining is also seen in tracheal submucosal glands. No staining is seen in the peripheral lung. ...

CFTR regulates the secretion of chloride and fluids in the exocrine glands, intestine, biliary and reproductive systems, pancreatic duct and bronchial glands (Cystic Fibrosis Australia, n.d.). Free resources to assist you with your nursing studies! Sweat testing is used for older children and adults who were not screened at birth and present with symptoms of CF which include recurring bouts of pancreatitis, chronic sinus, lung infections, bronchiectasis, nasal polyps and infertility. MI is more so associated with class I-III CFTR mutations. In approximately twenty percent of CF patients Meconium ileus (MI) occurs. Genetics play a specific role in determining the makeup of a persons body and its functioning. It also blocks the pancreas pathways leading to the digestive system, which causes problems for properly digesting food. Approximately four percent of the population carry the CF gene, the majority of whom are unaware they are carriers as they are not actually affected by the disease. Cystic ...

A gland is an organ in an animals body that synthesizes a substance for release such as hormones, often into the bloodstream (endocrine gland) or into cavities inside the body or its outer surface (exocrine gland). Humans have a large variety of glands, from the pituitary gland in the brain, to sweat glands over the bodys skin that release perspiration to regulate the bodys temperature. Other well known glands include the adrenal glands, the prostate gland, the thyroid gland, the pineal gland, the thymus and mammary gland. Two other paired glands are the parotid glands and submandibular glands, both involved in saliva production. Autoimmune related pancreatitis | Gut
Occasional coexistence of pancreatitis with other autoimmune diseases suggests that there may be common target antigens in the pancreas and other exocrine organs, such as the salivary glands, biliary tract, and renal tubules. Several autoantibodies such as antinuclear antibody (ANA), antilactoferrin (LF) antibody (ALF), anticarbonic anhydrase II (CA-II) antibody (ACA-II), and rheumatoid factor (RF) were frequently detected in patients with AIP.12,13 CA-II and LF are distributed in the cells of several exocrine organs, including the pancreas, salivary glands, biliary duct, and distal renal tubules.12 The high prevalence of these antibodies suggests that CA-II and LF may be candidates for the target antigens in AIP. However, it was found that these autoantibodies are not necessarily specific for AIP.12 Although the majority of diabetic patients with associated AIP show type 2 diabetes mellitus, a few AIP patients with type 1A diabetes mellitus have autoantibodies against glutamic acid ...

lacrimal gland
The preorbital gland is a paired exocrine gland found in many species of hoofed animals, which is homologous to the lacrimal gland found in humans. These glands are trenchlike slits of dark blue to black, nearly bare skin extending from the medial canthus of each eye. They are lined by a combination of sebaceous and sudoriferous glands, and they produce secretions which contain pheromones and other semiochemical compounds. Ungulates frequently deposit these secretions on twigs and grass as a means of communication with other animals. The preorbital gland serves different roles in different species. Pheromone-containing secretions from the preorbital gland may serve to establish an animals dominance (especially in preparation for breeding), mark its territory, or simply to produce a pleasurable sensation to the animal. Because of its critical role in scent marking, the preorbital gland is usually considered as a type of scent gland. A further function of these glands may be to produce ...
Third Eye or Pineal Gland opening? | High Existence
Hi how are you. I just joined this site a couple of months ago that that is why I didnt write to you sooner. Okay now the pineal gland has many different ways of opening the basic ways are through meditation yoga and relaxation however those ways have never worked for me. When I was 16 years old I got hit by a car and I died for 8 minutes that opened up my pineal gland 100% it has been open ever since those things that you read about online about the headaches and the itching thats the pineal gland actually getting bigger. Thats why its causing the brain to react to it in that way. You can only go so far with guided meditation. If youve gotten that far through meditation your best bet is to start mixing something thatll make your body physically go down in heart rate. Or to basically take the mind off the body nuerologically. Not something detrimental to your health, something in the lines of marijuana or mushrooms. I would not recommend the usage of LSD unless you have supervision. ...

Mucus strands from submucosal glands initiate mucociliary transport of large particles
Mucus produced by submucosal glands is a key component of respiratory mucociliary transport (MCT). When it emerges from submucosal gland ducts, mucus forms long strands on the airway surface. However, the function of those strands is uncertain. To test the hypothesis that mucus strands facilitate transport of large particles, we studied newborn pigs. In ex vivo experiments, interconnected mucus strands moved over the airway surface, attached to immobile spheres, and initiated their movement by pulling them. Stimulating submucosal gland secretion with methacholine increased the percentage of spheres that moved and shortened the delay until mucus strands began moving spheres. To disrupt mucus strands, we applied reducing agents tris-(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine and dithiothreitol. They decreased the fraction of moving spheres and delayed initiation of movement for spheres that did move. We obtained similar in vivo results with CT-based tracking of microdisks in spontaneously breathing pigs. ...
The Coexistence of Sjögrens Syndrome and Primary Biliary Cirrhosis : a Comprehensive Review | Archivio Istituzionale della...
Organ-specific and systemic autoimmune diseases share numerous features and often coexist in the same patient. Autoimmune cholangitis/primary biliary cirrhosis and Sjogren syndrome represent paradigmatic examples of the common grounds of different autoimmunity phenotypes based on similarities in clinical manifestations and immunopathogenesis. In fact, primary biliary cirrhosis and Sjogrens syndrome have both been coined as an autoimmune epithelitis in which apoptosis may be in both cases the key element to explain the organ-specific immune-mediated injury against the biliary and exocrine gland epithelia, respectively. Further, growing evidence supports in both diseases the view that B cells, T cytotoxic cells, and T helper cells are involved in chronic inflammation, likely via the altered expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The presence of estrogen receptors on the biliary and exocrine gland epithelia has been advocated as a key to the female predominance encountered in primary biliary ...
Localization of 11 S External Secretory IgA by Immunofluorescence in Tissues Lining the Oral and Respiratory Passages in Man |...
The tissue localization of cells containing 11 S external secretory IgA was investigated using rhodamine- or fluorescein-labeled antisera specific either for the heavy polypeptide chain of 7 S serum IgA (anti-IgA) or for the characteristic extra-antigenic determinants of 11 S secretory IgA (anti-Piece). Both anti-Piece and anti-IgA caused fluorescence of: 1) cells at the periphery of lymphoid follicles and lining the crypts of the pharyngeal and palatine tonsils, and 2) scattered interstitial and serous acinar cells of the compound alveolar glands in the nasal submucosa and in the submaxillary and parotid salivary glands. Anti-IgA alone stained occasional cells in the lymphoid follicles of spleen and of lymph nodes taken from the lung, submandibular tissue and periaortic chain. Anti-Piece stained none of the latter tissues, and neither anti-Piece nor anti-IgA caused fluorescence of liver, pancreas or pulmonary alveolar cells.. When anti-IgA and anti-Piece, one labeled with fluorescein and the ...

Airbus notches win over rival Boeing with Bombardier deal | Republican-American
Airbus - in a long-running trade battle with Boeing - argues that the U.S. company receives illegal tax breaks that act like subsidies and hurt competition.. Officials and unions in Northern Ireland cautiously welcomed the Airbus-Bombardier deal. Bombardier employs more than 4,000 people at its Belfast factories and will deliver 125 new C Series jets to Delta Air Lines next year.. Davy Thompson, regional officer of the Unite union, called it a welcome development - one that gives breathing space to the C Series itself and which we anticipate should safeguard the future of C Series production jobs in Belfast for the foreseeable future.. However, Ross Murdoch of union GMB warned that This deal is liable to further scrutiny from the U.S. administration that may see it as an attempt to dodge their trade tariffs. … GMB hopes both Bombardier and Airbus have taken cast iron legal advice to ensure they dont get rid of one legal challenge only to open themselves up to another.. Bombardiers market forecast suggests that the recovery in large category business jets has been stronger, with the smaller category continuing to fall behind.. While Bombardier and its family of large business jets looked in a prime position to utilise such interest, a new competitor has entered the fray.. Gulfstreams G650 aircraft, more than seven years in the making, received its FAA type certificate in September 2012, with the first delivery occurring five months later in December.. The G650s progress towards certification has not been without incident, with the second test aircraft crashing after takeoff from Roswell International Air Center in New Mexico, US, in April 2011, killing two pilots and two test engineers onboard.. The test aircraft was simulating an engine failure when its right wing tip hit the runway, caused by an erroneously low target V2 speed that led to the aircraft stalling just after lift-off. Gulfstream subsequently raised the V2 speed of the G650.. With the market ...

Skenes gland - Wikipedia
In female human anatomy, Skenes glands or the Skene glands (/skiːn/ SKEEN; also known as the lesser vestibular glands, periurethral glands, paraurethral glands, or homologous female prostate) are glands located on the anterior wall of the vagina, around the lower end of the urethra. They drain into the urethra and near the urethral opening and may be near or a part of the G-spot. These glands are surrounded with tissue (which includes the part of the clitoris) that reaches up inside the vagina and swells with blood during sexual arousal. The location of the Skenes glands are the general area of the vulva, located on the anterior wall of the vagina around the lower end of the urethra. The Skenes glands are homologous with the prostate gland in males, containing numerous microanatomical structures in common with the prostate gland, such as secretory cells. Skenes glands are not, however, explicit prostate glands themselves. By histological origin, the Skenes glands are often referred to as ...

p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase modulates exocrine secretion in rabbit lacrimal gland
The lacrimal gland (LG) is an exocrine gland important for secretion of the tear film. The kinase p38 has important signal transduction functions, e.g. in gene transcription, but has previously not been known to modulate exocrine secretion. The aim of the current study was to investigate the role of p38 in carbachol (Cch)-induced LG secretion in LG acinar cells in vitro. Western blotting was used to determine the phosphorylation status of p38 and p42/44 and determine expression of p38 isoforms. To determine the effect of p38 inhibition on LG secretion, PD 169316, a general p38 inhibitor, and SB 239063, an inhibitor of p38α and β, were added to the cells prior to secretion measurements. The results revealed activation of p38 mediated by Cch stimulation and inhibition of Cch-induced secretion as a result of p38 inhibition. The inhibition was observed with PD 169316 isoforms, but not with SB 239063. The p38δ isoform was shown to have robust expression both by Western blotting of acinar cells and ...
How to stop shaving boils - Things You Didnt Know
How to stop shaving boils - How to stop shaving boils? Lock up the razor. The way to stop shaving the boils is to lock up the razor. Since the boils stick up higher than the normal skin, a razor will cut their tops off. After all is healed, one can stop creating new boils or pimples by not cutting so closely that the skin is cut. If the skin is cut, it can heal together and seal over a hair follicle or skin gland opening. Bacteria or oils trapped inside form new boils.
function of skin mucus in frog
Protection from abrasion and predation is … Frog skin secretes a mucus that helps keep it moist. Frogs produce a slimy substance called mucus, the mucus comes from glands in the frogs skin. Teeth: The lower jaw lacks teeth. Mucous glands, which aid in maintaining the water balance and offer protection from bacteria, are extremely numerous in fish skin, especially in cyclostomes and teleosts. Privacy Policy3. Almost all frogs develop lungs when they develop into adults, but they still depend on cutaneous gas exchange (breathing through the skin) to get oxygen, especially when the frog is in a burrow underground or swimming in the water. thigh. The ridges, thus, formed by the thickening of the skin are known as dorsolateral dermal plicae. The granular gland forms a syncytial secretory compartment within the acinus, which is surrounded by smooth muscle cells. 4. These mucous glands secrete mucus that helps in lubricating the food. What is the function of mucus on a frogs skin. The dermis is ...

Rule M8 was written specifically for urothelial tumors in the renal pelvis, ureter, bladder, and urethra. Paraurethral gland (C681) and overlapping lesions of urinary organs (C688) do not belong in rule M8.. When C689 is assigned because tumors of the bladder and tumors of the ureter were determined to be a single primary and the site of origin is not known (as in your example), it makes sense to apply rule M8 when a subsequent tumor is diagnosed in one of the listed sites. However, if C689 is assigned for other unknown primary site situations, rule M8 should not be used.. We will add this issue to the list of possible revisions for the next edition of the MP/H rules.. ...

Serum interleukin-17 & nitric oxide levels in patients with primary Sjogrens syndrome
Background & objectives: The interleukin (IL)-17 producing T-helper cells have been linked to pathogenesis of autoimmunity and mostly investigated in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study we tested the IL-17 levels, as well as the levels of nitric oxide (NO) as possible IL-17-induced product, in patients with primary Sjogrens syndrome (pSS), an intricate and complex chronic autoimmune disorder of exocrine glands. Methods: Serum IL-17 levels and nitrite concentrations determined in patients with pSS (n=30) were compared with the values obtained in patients with RA (n=10) and healthy controls (n=15). The values obtained for 11,17 in pSS patients were also associated with the patients clinical characteristics, particularly the rheumatoid factor (RF) and total antinuclear antibodies (tANA) levels. Results: Serum concentrations of IL-17 were significantly (P lt 0.01) higher in patients with pSS (12.9 +/- 28.0 pg/ml) as compared to those obtained in healthy individuals (0.2 +/- 0.6 pg/ml), but ...
Tracheal epithelium surface, SEM - Stock Image C036/9758 - Science Photo Library
Tracheal epithelium surface, scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The trachea or windpipe is secretory in nature, possessing many exocrine glands and being lined by a pseudostratified columnar epithelium in which ciliated and mucous cells predominate. The ciliated epithelial cells are interspersed with goblet mucosal cells which are covered by microvilli. Goblet cells produce mucous which is secreted through the microvilli and tiny particles present in inhaled air are trapped. The ciliated cells move the mucous upwards and out of the respiratory tract, thus cleaning the pathway. Magnification: x600 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. - Stock Image C036/9758

Chapter 26. Primary Sjögren Syndrome | | AccessMedicine | McGraw-Hill Medical
Sjögren syndrome (SjS) is a systemic autoimmune disease that mainly affects the exocrine glands and usually presents as persistent dryness of the mouth and eyes due to functional impairment of the salivary and lacrimal glands. An estimated 2-4 million persons in the United States have SjS, of whom approximately 1 million have established diagnoses. The prevalence in European countries ranges between 0.60% and 3.3%. The incidence of SjS has been calculated as 4 cases per 100,000. SjS primarily affects white perimenopausal women, with a female:male ratio ranging from 14:1 to 24:1 in the largest reported series. The disease may occur at all ages but typically has its onset in the fourth to sixth decades of life. When sicca symptoms appear in a previously healthy person, the syndrome is classified as primary SjS. When sicca features are found in association with another systemic autoimmune disease, most commonly rheumatoid arthritis, systemic sclerosis, or systemic lupus erythematosus, it is ...

Diabetes Mellitus is a dysfunction of carbohydrate metabolism due to a relative or absolute insulin deficiency. It is caused by the pancreas producing too little insulin, or by a breakdown in the bodys insulin utilization. In the worst case scenario no insulin is produced at all and food containing sugar or carbohydrates cannot be metabolized, causing an increased level in blood sugar.. The pancreas weighs about 2.5 to 3.5 ounces, lies beneath the pylorus (exit of the stomach) and, along with the bile duct, connects to the c-shaped loop of the duodenum. In order to perform its key function in the digestion of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, it contains two distinctly different cell structures: first the exocrine glands that produce between 1.3 and 4.3 pints of alkaline digestive secretions depending on the amount of food consumed; these secretions contain important enzymes for the digestion of fats and proteins. The second type of cell structure are the island-like beta cells, about one ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Cholinoreceptor autoantibodies in Sjögren sndrome. AU - Reina, S.. AU - Oman, B.. AU - Anaya, J. M.. AU - Sterin-Borda, L.. AU - Borda, E.. PY - 2007/9/1. Y1 - 2007/9/1. N2 - Previous studies have demonstrated that antibodies against cholinoreceptors of exocrine glands correlate with dry mouth in persons with primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS). The aim of the present investigation was to establish if serum IgG antibodies (pSS IgG) were able to interact with cholinoreceptors in rat submandibular gland-dependent stimulation of cyclo-oxygenase 2 (COX-2) mRNA expression and PGE2 production. Our findings indicated that pSS IgG-stimulating M3, M4, and M1 cholinoreceptors exerted an increase in COX-2 mRNA without affecting COX-1 mRNA expression and increased PGE2 production. Inhibitors of phospholipase A2, COX-s, L-type calcium channel currents, and Ca2+-ATPase from sarcoplasmic reticulum prevented the pSS IgG effect on PGE2 production. An ionophore of calcium mimicked pSS IgG action, ...
Sjögren Syndrome: Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment - Nova Science Publishers
Sjögrens syndrome is a multisystem autoimmune disorder caused by lymphocytic infiltration of the exocrine glands and extraglandular organ systems associated with B cell overactivation and the production of autoantibodies. Sjögren Syndrome: Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment provides a comprehensive overview of primary Sjögren syndrome with emphasis on its clinical presentation.. Several tests are currently available to assess glandular involvement and to establish an accurate diagnosis. In 2016, the new American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism developed the classification criteria for primary Sjögren syndrome.. The association of polymorphic marker rs2228262 in THBS1 gene with the risk of developing dry eye syndrom with underlying Sjögren syndrome is also explored. Data was obtained through confocal microscopy which suggests that this polymorphic marker is responsible for the high probability of lesions of corneal nerve fibers in cases of Sjögren syndrome, even if ...
Medical Surgical Nursing: Sjögrens syndrome
Sjögrens syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which immune cells attack and destroy the exocrine glands that produce tears and saliva. It is named after Swedish ophthalmologist Henrik Sjögren (1899-1986), who first described it. Sjögrens syndrome is also associated with rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, and it is rheumatoid factor positive in 90 percent of cases. The hallmark symptoms of the disorder are dry mouth and dry eyes (part of what are known as sicca symptoms). In addition, Sjögrens syndrome may cause skin, nose, and vaginal dryness, and may affect other organs of the body, including the kidneys, blood vessels, lungs, liver, pancreas, and brain. Nine out of ten Sjögrens patients are women and the average age of onset is late 40s, although Sjögrens occurs in all age groups in both women and men. It is estimated to strike as many as 4 million people in the United States alone making it the second most common autoimmune rheumatic disease ...
