Chemical kinetics plays an important role in controlling the atmospheric composition of all planetary atmospheres, including those of extrasolar planets. For the hottest exoplanets, the composition can closely follow thermochemical-equilibrium predictions, at least in the visible and infrared photosphere at dayside (eclipse) conditions. However, for atmospheric temperatures < ~2000 K, and in the uppermost atmosphere at any temperature, chemical kinetics matters. We usually define a stars habitable zone, for example, as the region around the star where liquid water could exist on a rocky planets surface given a thick enough atmosphere. This is usually based on the amount of sunlight the planet receives from the star.. To get a clearer sense of habitability, Schwieterman pointed out, nitrogen could serve as an indicator for an atmosphere thick enough to maintain stable surface water. The southern highlands of Mars are dissected by hundreds of valley networks, which are evidence that water once sculpted the surface. Characterizing the mechanisms of valley incision may constrain early Mars climate and the search for ancient life. Previous interpretations of the geological record require precipitation and surface water runoff to form the valley networks, in contradiction with climate simulations that predict a cold, icy ancient Mars. Here we present a global comparative study of valley network morphometry, using a principal-component-based analysis with physical models of fluvial, groundwater sapping and glacial and subglacial erosion. We found that valley formation involved all these processes, but that subglacial and fluvial erosion are the predominant mechanisms. This is supported by predictions from models of steady-state erosion and geomorphological comparisons to terrestrial analogues. On July 30, 1976, the LR returned its initial results from Mars. Amazingly, they were positive. As the experiment progressed, a total of four positive results, supported by five varied controls, streamed down from the twin Viking spacecraft landed some 4,000 miles apart. The data curves signaled the detection of microbial respiration on the Red Planet. The curves from Mars were similar to those produced by LR tests of soils on Earth. It seemed we had answered that ultimate question. When the Viking Molecular Analysis Experiment failed to detect organic matter, the essence of life, however, NASA concluded that the LR had found a substance mimicking life, but not life. Inexplicably, over the 43 years since Viking, none of NASAs subsequent Mars landers has carried a life detection instrument to follow up on these exciting results. Instead the agency launched a series of missions to Mars to determine whether there was ever a habitat suitable for life and, if so, eventually to bring samples to Earth ...

A couple of centuries ago, a European scientist noticed that if microbes are allowed to multiply in a nutrient solution, then gas bubbles will appear on the surface of this solution. On Mars, the experiment lasted seven days (Louis only had a few hours). That is, in fact - it is a test for the presence of bacteria metabolism, which indirectly indicates their presence. The only thing that can give a false positive reaction is chemical processes like boiling of the nutrient solution. At least, in experiments on Earth it was so. Gilbert Levin is an American engineer, the founder of Spherix and the principal investigator of the Viking mission Labeled Release experiment. In 1997, Levin published his conclusion that a 1976 Viking lander had discovered living microorganisms on Mars. He is noted for still claiming that his experiment on board the 1976 Viking Mars landers to detect microscopic life on Mars rendered a true positive result. Planetary magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the Solar System and extrasolar planets are common in the galaxy. However, no extrasolar planetary magnetic field (or exodynamo) has yet been directly detected. Magnetic fields offer a unique window into the internal structure and dynamics of planets, can be remotely detected by electron cyclotron emission at radio wavelengths, and are commonly assumed to be important for surface habitability. In this talk we describe the conditions necessary for the generation of magnetic fields in the cores of terrestrial exoplanets, how they might evolve over time, and the important role of internal heat sources. We demonstrate that eccentric Earth-mass planets in the habitable zone around M dwarfs are likely to be within the tidal zone, where gravitational tidal dissipation can be extreme, prolonging the magma ocean phase and inhibiting dynamo action. ...

Noticeable circular polarization was measured in several dusty environments, including star forming regions and comets. These measurements have raised the possibility that circular polarization may relate to the formation (in molecular clouds) and observation (in comets) of prebiological organics, characterized by homochirality (dominance of molecules of specific handiness). We present computer simulations of light scattering by aggregates to model circular polarization from realistic particles containing homochiral molecules. Using optical constants of chlorophyll a, we study the spectral and phase angle dependencies of circular polarization. We begin our study by reproducing laboratory measurements (Sparks et al., 2009a), which found a fast change and reversal of sign for circular polarization within absorption bands. We further study how this spectral effect depends on the size and number of monomers in aggregates. We show that larger aggregates are characterized by larger values of circular
Amino acids are excellent biomarkers in the search for life on Mars because they are essential for biology as we know it and they are robust enough to survive for billions of years in the cold and dry Martian environment. However, amino acids and other organic compounds on Mars are exposed to the ionizing radiation from space and from the decay of radionuclides. This process and its role in the preservation of organic compounds has not been adequately addressed in the past. Based on measured radiolysis constants of amino acids and radiation dose estimates for Mars we show that the detection of an amino acid signature derived from an early Martian biosphere is not limited by its radiolytic decomposition as long as the amino acids are shielded adequately from space radiation. My main research interests are in astrobiology, geochemistry and geobiology. My PhD involved testing the capabilities of Raman spectroscopy for the analysis of Mars analogue rocks, in preparation for the ESA 2020 ExoMars mission. I also researched the effect oxidative weathering has on the Raman spectra of carbonaceous rocks. As organic carbon is one of the building blocks of life it is one of the main goals of the missions, and if found on Mars, it is likely it will have been oxidised.. I determined whether Raman spectroscopy can distinguish between Ca-sulphates with varying degrees of habitability, based on analogues from the Haughton impact crater.. It seems likely that planets orbit many of these stars too. The evidence that extrasolar planets exist was obtained for the first time in the 1990s. However, these planets are small, non-luminous bodies that are light years away - how are we able to prove that they exist?
The close-in extrasolar giant planets (CEGPs), <~0.05 AU from their parent stars, may have a large component of optically reflected light. We present theoretical optical photometric light curves and polarization curves for the CEGP systems from reflected planetary light. Different particle sizes of three condensates are considered. In the most reflective case, the variability is ~100 μmag, which will be easily detectable by the upcoming satellite missions Microvariability and Oscillations of Stars (MOST), COROT, and Measuring Oscillations in Nearby Stars (MONS), and possibly from the ground in the near future. The least reflective case is caused by small, highly absorbing grains such as solid Fe, with variation of much less than 1 μmag. Polarization for all cases is lower than current detectability limits. We also discuss the temperature-pressure profiles and resulting emergent spectra of the CEGP atmospheres. We discuss the observational results of τ Boo b by Cameron et al. and Charbonneau et al.
