March 5 1999. My mother went home a few days ago. FHs 43rd birthday was yesterday. We left big brother Frankie with Nick at the hospital and had dinner on Granville Island. My husband needs me, but I dont have a scrap of interest in intimacy. Weve been in Vancouver at British Columbia Childrens Hospital for 37 days, and it feels like a year. Im going nuts from sitting in a chair, hour after hour. I miss my home, and my own space. I miss the dogs, cats and horses and the physical busyness they bring: tossing hay, keeping the water trough full and free of ice. I ache from missing my healthy Nicholas, Frankie in his own bed, and our normal life. I wake up and still need time to orientate myself to this place, and the circumstances of this life we now have.. Nicks mouth is healing. There are less ugly painful sores, and he says he feels better, but he still puts no food past his lips. His nutrition comes from a bag that hangs from an IV pole. A kangaroo pump measures the amount pushed ...
He became ill with a clinical viral upper respiratory tract infection, which evolved into bilateral pneumonia. He was transferred from the Emergency Department to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he was intubated and mechanically ventilated. At three weeks he was not making significant progress and was transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the British Columbias Childrens Hospital. After two additional weeks of ventilation and intensive physiotherapy, his secretions settled, his atelectasis resolved, and he was successfully extubated to noninvasive ventilation (NIPPV). Several days later the PICU physiotherapists reported that he was losing strength in his right arm. A Computed Tomography (CT) scan revealed hydrocephalus, and on reviewing his chest X-rays, including xrays from the referring hospital, several showed that that his shunt had become disconnected high in his neck. The shunt was revised, but polysomnography continued to show hypopnea and central apnea. He was ...
B. cepacia is an important evolving pathogen in patients with CF or with CGD, but its mechanisms of pathogenesis are very poorly understood. The purpose of these studies was to develop an animal model of infection which would permit a systematic investigation of potential virulence determinants and host defense mechanisms. We chose to pursue our investigations with a systemic challenge model because B. cepacia infections in these two dissimilar disease states are characteristically invasive, as opposed to the mucosal respiratory tract disease characteristic of P. aeruginosa infections in patients with CF. Indeed, one of the strains of B. cepacia (FC441) was recovered from a 15-year-old boy with X-linked CGD at British Columbias Childrens Hospital, who suffered a prolonged bout of septicemia with multiple organ infection from which he recovered after a long course of aggressive antimicrobial therapy (unpublished data). B. cepacia is also a particularly virulent pathogen in patients with CF, ...

Montana Freeman William Stanton is convicted on charges of criminal syndicalism (see June-July 1994 and October 17, 1994). Stanton, an elderly rancher whose property suffered foreclosure in 1993, joined the Freemen after Freemen leader LeRoy Schweitzer offered him a $3.8 million loan to cover the foreclosure debt (see 1993-1994). The loan was worthless, but instead of reacting angrily to Schweitzers fraudulent loan offer, Stanton blamed the local and federal government for his predicament. As an increasingly active Freeman, Stanton has issued fraudulent money orders, offered a $1 million bounty for Garfield County officials (see January 1994), and threatened to hang the Garfield County sheriff from a bridge. Stanton is sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay a $100,000 fine. The FBI learns that the Freemen might be planning to retaliate against Garfield County Attorney Nick Murnion, who successfully prosecuted Stanton, Murnions fellow prosecutor John Bohlman, and the judge who ...

Dr. Amy Freeman Lee, an educator, lecturer, artist and author, is the niece of the Freeman brothers. She was raised by her grandmother, their mother. She was quite close to her Uncle Harry. She knows a good deal of the Freeman family history, as well as how the idea originated to pass the ranch to SWT.. After her mother dies in the infamous 1918 Asian flu epidemic, her Grandmother Freeman raised Dr. Lee. The maternal part of the family is from New Orleans and from France before that. According to Dr. Lee, the family became established in Seguin, Texas around the turn of the century with land, a grocery store, dry goods and a horse and mule barn.. After Grandfather passed, his eldest son, Joe, at sixteen years of age, became head of the family, said Lee. Harry Freeman was around fourteen at the time and the brothers carried on with the family business and expanded it. While the main house was in Seguin, the family maintained a residence in San Antonio as they began to make more and more ...
BEWARE - Special Warning Notice about ExpoGuide and FAIRGuide. Freemans commitment toward the patients and the restoration of their health seemed so evident to patients and their families that even in cases of an unsuccessful lobotomy leading to disability or death, the families of the patients expressed their gratitude to him. Following a patients death after a second surgical attempt, the patients sister thanked Freeman and his partner, James Watts, for their concern and interest in her sisters condition. She was sure, she added, that her sister also would have thanked the physicians, if she were able to do so (Maeve Ingbers sister to James Watts, 1948). In his response, Freeman wrote that he and Watts had been greatly disappointed in the outcome. Yet he added that this had been a situation of extraordinary difficulty where surgery offered the only opportunity for giving her peace of mind. Commending the sister for her positive attitude toward this unfortunate outcome, Freeman thanked her for her letter (WF to Maeve Ingbers sister, 1948). ...

This new gallery, called Capitain Petzel, is housed in a glass-encased gallery located in Mitte section of Berlin and presents exhibitions of established international artists. After eleven years on 22nd Street, Petzel Gallery closed this space, expanding into a new location at 456 West 18th Street in 2012. In March of 2015, Petzel opened a second space in New York, a new, uptown location at 35 East 67th Street. Situated in a townhouse, the new gallery will curate historic exhibitions by artists within the Petzel program as well as focus on curatorial projects and publishing activities. Both galleries in New

A ring of gallery space runs along the boundary of the site, creating a central atrium for the public. Two passages in the east and the west punch through the gallery, connecting the atrium with the two Hutongs on both sides. The atrium and the two Hutongs become the beating heart of this area. Public life is held as priority in this project, while the gallery is merely a humble existence.. The gallery provides an endless linear exhibition space, with an enlarged node for events. The narrowest part of the gallery is of 0.9m clearance, which hold about 1/5 of the total area. Big space is standard nowadays for contemporary exhibitions for obvious reasons. It is true that space that is too narrow is not friendly for exhibitions. But it can also be a chance to create intimate and confronting relationship between participants and the exhibits. Moreover, the atrium can be an extension of the exhibition space. ...

The monumental importance of the exhibition Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum lies not least in the staggering number of people it has reached. It can safely be called a blockbuster, having attained its visitor goal for the six-month duration of the show - a quarter million visitors - after only three months.(1) At present the exhibition website warns Advance booking essential, echoing a ticket calendar sold out over a month in advance. While the physical display is indeed spectacular, recreating a Roman house with all the trimmings, this accounts only partially for its wild success. Of greater significance is the canny use of current technologies to allow curious viewers to share, like, ...
