The purpose of this project is to develop a logic model and process evaluation framework for a therapeutic garden program at Banfield Pavilion, a residential long term care facility located in Vancouver, B.C. A six-step process evaluation design developed by Saunders, Evans, and Joshi (2005) is used to develop the evaluation framework. Steps of the framework include (1) describing the program, (2) describing complete and acceptable delivery of the program, (3) developing the potential list of questions, (4) determining methods, (5) considering the programs resources, context, and characteristics, and (6) the final process evaluation plan. The logic model connects program elements to concepts drawn from Ulrichs (1984) stress reduction theory (SRT) and theory of supportive garden design (1999). A central consideration of the evaluation is whether the program should focus more on spontaneous or structured activities and garden interactions. Both the logic model and evaluation framework can be ...
The Cand-Tec Candida detection system and enzyme immunoassay for serum mannan were retrospectively compared in a controlled collaborative evaluation of antigen detection in 32 patients with candidiasis proven by biopsy or culture from a normally sterile site and with sera drawn within 7 days of inclusion. With a threshold titer of 1/8, which excluded false-positive results in 17 hospitalized patients without candidiasis, sensitivities for all 32 patients with candidiasis were 44% for the Cand-Tec assay and 17% for the enzyme immunoassay. Both assays provided greater sensitivity when sera were drawn within 24 h of inclusion in the study and in the category of patients with invasive candidiasis (57% by Cand-Tec and 33% by enzyme immunoassay). The Cand-Tec assay gave false-positive results (titer, greater than or equal to 1/8) in 4 of 6 patients with transient candidemia, in 1 of 20 otherwise healthy patients with rheumatoid factor, and in 1 patient with a positive cryptococcal latex agglutination ...

Introduction. Critical Evaluation - The Journey of the Magi - T. S. Eliot Raymond England 4r2 The poem The Journey of the Magi is T. S. Eliot recalling the journey of the three Wise Men to witness the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. Also it depicts Christs lifetime through signs the Magi see. As well as this, the poem covers Eliots journey from being an atheist to becoming a member of the Christian faith. In this Critical Evaluation, I am going to examine the poem, in depth, and show how the poet captures the emotion of the Magi. Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888-1965) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. to an old New England family. He was educated in three of the worlds best institutes for learning: Harvard University, The Sorbonne and Merton College, Oxford. He moved to England in the 1920s and became a British Citizen. At around the same time he joined the Anglican Church and became a devout Christian. His writing between 1917 and 1943 reflects his development as a Christian writer. ...

Lung assessments of adults who lived in Morwell during the 2014 Hazelwood mine fire are underway.. The Hazelwood Health Study has begun randomly mailing out information packs to 500 people who completed the Adult Survey inviting them to take part in free, specialised lung assessments.. The two-and-a-half-hour-long visits aim to find out whether exposure to mine fire smoke is associated with respiratory symptoms, or changes in lung health or asthma management.. "We understand that the tests are time-consuming, but it is critically important that as many people as possible participate in the next phase of the Hazelwood Health Study," HHS Respiratory Coordinator Brigitte Borg said.. "Whether young or old, well or unwell, we need you. Otherwise, the results may not give us an accurate picture of health effects associated with exposure to the mine fire. The study needs to include people who were in Morwell and Sale but not exposed to the mine fire event, just as much as people who were ...

Back to the saturated fat. I wrote to the company that makes the lard I buy (FreshFields Lard in the UK) and I was assured by Kerry Foods Ireland (which owns the company) that they do not hydrogenate it, it is only rendered - which is a traditional process applied to fat to make it usable in cooking. I could have guessed this from the fact that they add anti-oxidants (tocopherols i.e. vit E) to it. The beef dripping I buy is well, beef dripping, its 57% saturated and 35% mono according to FitDay - and I dont even keep olive oil in the fridge - so no company in full control of its finances would bother wasting the money to hydrogenate it. If I were to render down the excess fat cut from beef and/or purify the dripping off a roast, I would get a product that looked pretty much identical to what I buy in the shops. And if I wanted to use the dripping for deep frying say, it makes sense to purify it in this way - to purify fat you boil it up (very carefully) with some water and then pour it off ...

S1, a new chromogenic cephalosporin (International BioClinical, Inc., Portland, Oreg.), was used to detect beta-lactamase production among a variety of commonly encountered bacteria in a four-center collaborative study. Results of an S1 disk assay were compared with those obtained by a nitrocefin-based disk procedure (Cefinase; Becton-Dickinson Microbiology Systems, Cockeysville, Md.), with repetitive testing of five quality control organisms and with individual tests of recent clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (162 strains), Haemophilus influenzae (162 strains), Moraxella catarrhalis (155 strains), Staphylococcus aureus (161 strains), and Bacteroides fragilis (164 strains). The performances of the two beta-lactamase disk assays were comparable for the first three species cited above. However, the S1 assay appeared to be a more sensitive procedure than the Cefinase assay when applied to S. aureus and B. fragilis, with respect to both total numbers of positive results and length of time to a

The use of inclusive technologies in development and social change is maturing, and should move beyond pilots and prototypes to longer-term interventions, grounded in existing learning and best practice, with more rigorous evaluations that specifically review the contribution that inclusive technologies make to our work. To date, robust evidence of the contribution that inclusive technologies make has emanated more from research than from project-level M&E. Pressure is growing to bring this evidence to bear, and to move beyond continually re-committing the same mistakes. We have seen a new effort to consolidate best practice, establish measures of impact[l][m] for programming that include the contributions of newer kinds of technology components, and focus energy on new boundaries of scale and effectiveness. This can be seen in the Principles for Digital Development, as well as sector-specific efforts like DFIDs Conflict, Crime and Violence Results Initiative, which offers a series of papers ...
Microscope- enhanced dentistry is a promising and inseparable aspect of modern day dentistry. It involves the uses of magnification systems starting from Simple Loupes(2-4x magnification) to Surgical Operating Microscope (upto 25-40x magnification). These enable the clinician to enjoy magnified vision, depth of focus of the treatment area and field of view characteristics, better illumination, and avail of an excellent tool in recording and documenting. Since there is magnified vision and the primary aim is minimal invasion, there is use of very fine light weight micro instruments, designed specially to work under the microscope. This ensures minimal trauma to tissues, more precise handling, , less pain, swelling, minimal scarring, significantly faster healing, far superior post-operative appearance compared to conventional procedures. A very remarkable example is that of Root Canal therapy , wherin the apex of the tooth, which is otherwise invisible can be seen directly under the microscope, ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The realization of Health Information Systems (HIS) requires rigorous evaluation that addresses technology, human and organization issues. Our review indicates that current evaluation methods evaluate different aspects of HIS and they can be improved upon. A new evaluation framework, human, organization and technology-fit (HOT-fit) was developed after having conducted a critical appraisal of the findings of existing HIS evaluation studies. HOT-fit builds on previous models of IS evaluation--in particular, the IS Success Model and the IT-Organization Fit Model. This paper introduces the new framework for HIS evaluation that incorporates comprehensive dimensions and measures of HIS and provides a technological, human and organizational fit. METHODS: Literature review on HIS and IS evaluation studies and pilot testing of developed framework. The framework was used to evaluate a Fundus Imaging System (FIS) of a primary care organization in the UK. The case study was conducted ...

The miniaturization of the current technology of storage media is hindered by fundamental limits of quantum mechanics. A new approach consists in using so-called spin-crossover molecules as the smallest possible storage unit. Similar to normal hard drives, these special molecules can save information via their magnetic state. A research team from Kiel University has now managed to successfully place a new class of spin-crossover molecules onto a surface and to improve the molecules storage capacity. The storage density of conventional hard drives could therefore theoretically be increased by more than one hundred fold. The study has been published in the scientific journal Nano Letters. ...

THE CYCLIC NUCLEOTIDES, CAMP AND CGMP ARE IMPORTANT REGULATORY MOLECULES THAT ARE NOW RECOGNIZED AS MEDIATORS IN A VAST NUMBER OF NORMAL AND PATHOLOGICAL PROCESSES. SUCH INSIGHTS HAVE INCREASED THE NEED FOR GENERALLY AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL ALLOW THE CONVENIENT AND ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF THE CYCLIC NUCLEOTIDES IN RESEARCH AND CLINICAL SETTINGS. THIS PHASE I PROPOSAL OUTLINES OUR INTEREST IN PURSUING THE GENERATION OF MURINE MONOCLONAL ANTI CAMP/CGMP ANTIBODIES AND FLUORESCENT ENZYME IMMUNOASSAY SYSTEMS FOR THE RAPID AND SENSITIVE MEASUREMENT OF THE CYCLIC NUCLEOTIDES IN BIOLOGICAL MATERIALS. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) (/ɪˈlaɪzə/, /ˌiːˈlaɪzə/) is a test that uses antibodies and color change to identify a substance. ELISA is a popular format of "wet-lab" type analytic biochemistry assay that uses a solid-phase enzyme immunoassay (EIA) to detect the presence of a substance, usually an antigen, in a liquid sample or wet sample. The ELISA has been used as a diagnostic tool in medicine and plant pathology, as well as a quality-control check in various industries. Antigens from the sample are attached to a surface. Then, a further specific antibody is applied over the surface so it can bind to the antigen. This antibody is linked to an enzyme, and, in the final step, a substance containing the enzymes substrate is added. The subsequent reaction produces a detectable signal, most commonly a color change in the substrate. Performing an ELISA involves at least one antibody with specificity for a particular antigen. The sample with an unknown amount of antigen is ...
Evaluation of recommender systems has only lately started to become more systematic, since the emphasis has long been on the experimental evaluation of algorithmic performance. Recent studies have proposed adopting a layered evaluation approach, according to which recommender systems may be decomposed into several components, evaluating each of them separately. Nevertheless, there are still no evaluation studies of recommender systems that apply a layered evaluation framework to explore how all the different components or layers of such a system may be assessed. This paper introduces layered evaluation and examines how a previously proposed layered evaluation framework for adaptive systems can be applied in the case of recommender systems. It presents the possible adaptation of this out a retrospective analysis of its past evaluation results under the new prism that the layered evaluation approach brings. Our analysis indicates that implementing a layered- based evaluation of recommender systems ...
p,Serum specimens from 12 patients with type A hepatitis were analyzed for immunoglobulin M-type antibody to hepatitis A virus (IgM anti-HA). A recently developed solid-phase radioimmunoassay kit for IgM anti-HA (HAVAB-M, Abbott Laboratories) and a competitive binding radioimmunoassay kit (HAVAB, Abbott Laboratories) with or without 2-mercaptoethanol treatment, as modified by Yano et al. (Acta Hepatol. Jpn. 21, 704-712, 1980) were used to obtain an M-index. All specimens obtained within 60 days of the onset of illness and specimens from 2 of 4 patients later than 60 days after the onset were positive with the HAVAB-M test. This test gave negative results to sera which were positive for anti-HA by a standard HAVAB test in the following: 3 patients with type B hepatitis; 5 with non-A, non-B hepatitis; 11 healthy adults; and 10 sera strongly positive for rheumatoid factor. The M-index for type A hepatitis in sera within 30 days of the onset (mean value of the M-index, m, = 1.52; standard deviation, ...
Robust monitoring and evaluation (M&E) frameworks that measure the impact of resilience programs can help by providing clear, systematic steps and processes to gather and analyze evidence. But new research [4] from WRI conducted while developing the Assessing Climate Change Adaptation Framework (ACCAF), an M&E framework for LoCAL, reveals challenges that are characteristic of the broader thorny bundle of obstacles [5] associated with climate change adaptation, such as the contextual nature of resilience and a lack of standard indicators to measure adaptation progress. This new WRI working paper, Assessing the Effectiveness of Climate Resilience Grants to Local Governments in Least Developed Countries [4], [4] outlines practical approaches to some of these methodological challenges. It identifies three broader lessons learned from creating an M&E framework for resilience:. 1. M&E systems for adaptation must also be adaptable. LoCALs existing assessment system exemplified good practice for ...

Each of the APG systems represents the broad consensus of a number of systematic botanists, united in the APG, working at several institutions worldwide. The APG II system recognized 45 orders, five more than the APG system. The new orders were Austrobaileyales, Canellales, Gunnerales, Celastrales, and Crossosomatales, all of which were families unplaced as to order, although contained in supra-ordinal clades, in the APG system. APG II recognized 457 families, five fewer than the APG system. Thirty-nine of the APG II families were not placed in any order, but 36 of the 39 were placed in a supra-ordinal clade within the angiosperms. Fifty-five of the families came to be known as "bracketed families". They were optional segregates of families that could be circumscribed in a larger sense. The APG II system was influential and was adopted in whole or in part (sometimes with modifications) in a number of references. It was superseded 6½ years later by the APG III system, published in October 2009. ...
