Euthanasia might be needed for poor people who cannot access palliative care, the new Lithuanian Health Minister has suggested. Rimantė Šalaševičiūtė was sworn earlier this month, but already she has made waves by backing an open discussion of the legalisation of euthanasia.. Without making any specific proposals, she told local media that Lithuania was not a welfare state with palliative care available for all and that euthanasia might be an option for people who did not want to torment relatives with the spectacle of their suffering.. The minister has also raised the idea of euthanasia for children. She noted that this option had been approved for Belgian children after a long public debate. It was an option which might be appropriate in Lithuania as well after public debate.. Ms Šalaševičiūtė will face an uphill battle in her campaign to introduce Lithuanians to euthanasia. Many doctors and the Catholic Church oppose it. Dr Andrius Narbekovas, who is both a priest and a doctor, ...
Published literature has not discerned end-of-life palliative versus life-shortening effects of pharmacologically maintaining continuous deep sedation until death (i.e., dying in deep sleep) compared with common sedation practices relieving distress in the final conscious phase of dying. Continuous deep sedation predictably suppresses brainstem vital centers and shortens life. Continuous deep sedation remains controversial as palliation for existential suffering and in elective death requests by discontinuation of chronic ventilation or circulatory support with mechanical devices. Continuous deep sedation contravenes the double-effect principle because: (1) it induces permanent coma (intent of action) for the contingency relief of suffering and for social isolation (desired outcomes) and (2) because of its predictable and proportional life-shortening effect. Continuous deep sedation should be distinguished from common sedation practices for palliation and characterized instead as ...
OBJECTIVE: Many patients are admitted to the ICU at or near the end of their lives. Consequently, the increasingly common debate regarding physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia holds implications for the practice of critical care medicine. The objective of this article is to explore core ethical issues related to physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia from the perspective of healthcare professionals and ethicists on both sides of the debate. SYNTHESIS: We identified four issues highlighting the key areas of ethical tension central to evaluating physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia in medical practice: 1) the benefit or harm of death itself, 2) the relationship between physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia and withholding or withdrawing life support, 3) the morality of a physician deliberately causing death, and 4) the management of conscientious objection related to physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia in the critical care setting ...

Despite increasing legalization of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (PAS) worldwide, the practice remains relatively rare and, when carried out, is primarily motivated by psychological factors such as loss of autonomy or enjoyment of life, rather than physical pain. A new comprehensive assessment of data from around the world shows that in areas where they are legal, only 0.3 to 4.6 percent of deaths result from euthanasia or PAS, with more than 70 percent of cases involving patients with cancer.
Kennedys address at the 97th annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in 1941 encapsulates well how the acceptance of evolution and utilitarian thinking are tied into arguments for eugenics (and euthanasia), which is ironic, of course, since many advocates for euthanasia deny such connections and modern proponents of evolution become apoplectic at the insinuation that their viewpoint is connected, even in a small way, with the horrors of the past. Their dishonesty does not bode well for humanity.. Foster Kennedy: The Problem of Social Control of the Congenital Defective: Education, Sterilization, Euthanasia. CBD is a naturally occurring substance in cannabis plants. Unlike cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabinol does not have psychoactive activity. In short, THC is a substance contained in cannabis. On the other hand, the CBD has no effect on the spirit. But according to more and more medical professionals, the CBD does have legitimate medical uses.. Legalization of cannabis can be divided into: Legalization of recreational cannabis and legalization of medical marijuana.. The legalization of medical marijuana means that citizens can only obtain certain doses of marijuana or cannabinoid products from state-licensed pharmacies for medicinal purposes through medical cards issued by doctors according to local laws.. Legalization of marijuana according to link includes planting, selling, transporting and holding legalization.. The Netherlands had been tolerant of cannabis until February, when it was legalized. Uruguayan residents were able to buy and hold 40 grams of cannabis a month from a state-licensed ...
Euthanasia which is defined generally as the deliberate killing of a person for his/her benefit, raises moral and religious questions such as: is it ever right for another person to end the life of a terminally ill patient ...
What Is Euthanasia?. Euthanasia is the painless, humane termination of life. There are times when medical science has exhausted all of its capabilities and euthanasia is the only way to prevent an animal from suffering needlessly. However, the decision regarding when to euthanize is fraught with medical, financial, ethical, religious, moral, and sometimes legal considerations. Euthanasia is therefore a medical procedure that needs to be discussed (however painful that discussion may be) and considered fully before a final decision is made.. How Is Euthanasia Performed?. Most veterinarians use a concentrated solution of a barbiturate, administered as an injection into a vein, to perform euthanasia on a pet. The medication enters the circulation immediately, and it generally stops heart and brain function very quickly. Most pets fall quietly asleep within a few seconds, followed quickly by termination of heart and brain function. However, some animals may experience an excitement phase as the ...

End-of-Life Decision Making is an issue wrapped in controversy and contradictions for Canadians. Most people in this country want to die at home, but few do; most believe planning for dying is important and should be started while people are healthy, but almost no one does it. And while most Canadians support the decriminalization of voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide, both remain illegal under the Criminal Code of Canada. Assisted dying is a critically important public policy issue, where opinion, practice and the law seem out of alignment. The Royal Society of Canada, a national organization of distinguished scholars, artists and scientists, believes the time has come for a national debate on end-of-life decision making. It commissioned us, a panel of six Canadian and international experts on bioethics, clinical medicine, health law and policy, and philosophy, to prepare this report-both to trigger a national conversation on end-of-life issues and contribute material for those ...
Australian right-to-die advocate Dr. Philip Nitschke is holding a workshop on voluntary euthanasia in Britain. Dr. Death, a moniker known to many Australians, sells euthanasia kits through his organization, Exit International, but he claims that no profit is made. Ironically, the doctor denies promoting euthanasia, despite having assisted in four suicides in Australias Northern Territory.. Dr. Nitschkes 10-day workshop period transpires as Britain deliberates on the issue of assisted suicide. Amid the heated euthanasia debate, the British Director of Public Prosecutions released guidelines which determine when prosecution is unlikely in suicide cases just last month. This includes instances when the victims decision is voluntary, clear, settled and informed, and the person assisting acts wholly and compassionately.. But how can killing with intention, even if it is consensual on behalf of the victim, be defined as compassionate?. Nitschke, against British public policy, shows people how ...
Washington, DC: The enactment of adult-use [cannabis] legalization laws is not associated with any significant increase in cannabis-related activity in neighboring states and counties, according to a federally funded report published by the nonprofit Justice Research and Statistics Association and first reported by Marijuana Moment.. Authors wrote: The goal of this project was to analyze quantitative and qualitative data in eleven targeted states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, and Washington) to address three research questions: One: What are the impacts of marijuana legalization and decriminalization on criminal justice resources in Colorado, Washington, ...
There are two principles that we operate from. One is that we dont kill people, but the other one is that we dont abandon people.. Miller was a keynote speaker at a conference organized by the bishops of Saskatchewan to address the challenges of providing pastoral care in an era of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. Bishop Noël Simard of the Diocese of Valleyview, Quebec, also spoke during the one-day workshop at the Cathedral of the Holy Family in Saskatoon, exploring end of life issues and formation of conscience (see related article).. Born in Edmonton, Miller completed his doctorate in moral theology at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, and then spent 16 years as a clinical bioethicist working at St. Pauls Hospital in Saskatoon. Presently serving as the provincial of the English-speaking Redemptorists of Canada, Miller also works at the centre for clinical ethics at St. Joseph and St. Michael hospitals in Toronto.. Paris, France, Mar 3, 2020 / 07:00 pm (CNA).- Asia Bibi is a Pakistani Catholic woman who was sentenced to death in 2010 for blasphemy against Islam. After more than eight years in prison, she was acquitted by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2018.. I was accused because of the name of Jesus and I knew I would be freed because of Jesus, Bibi said at a Paris press conference last week.. Bibi said that during her time on death row, her faith was always strong because I knew that God was with me, God never leaves you alone, he always accompanies you. Together with French journalist Anne-Isabelle Tollet, Bibi has written her autobiography,Enfin Libre (Free at Last). The English edition is due out in September.. According to UCA News, Tollet campaigned for Bibis release and is the only journalist to interview her in Canada, where Bibi was granted refugee status last year.. Bibi has been living with her husband and two daughters in Canada since last May. Her refugee status is due to expire at ...

We hear a lot about rights these days. I would argue that save in very rare circumstances where the very safety of society is in peril, every man or woman has the right to live, but more than that, the right to live in dignity. I do not mean by that the right to have more than enough, or be protected from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune that will inevitably buffet us all, or to be protected from folly, failure and accident or poverty. That would be naive, and would misunderstand the nature of the Universe. But an innocent man should not be treated with cruelty, inhumanity, or stripped of his dignity.. I would argue that Tony Nicklinson is an innocent man who is being treated in an inhumane way, albeit from the best of motives. So is Martin. Tony Nicklinson and Martin applied to the High Court seeking in essence a declaration that any person who assisted them in passing on from this life would be immune from a charge of murder.. The cases are tragic. Both gentlemen have suffered ...
I do not want the taxes I pay going to kill any person even if they want to die. I feel there should be help for those who want to end their life, counseling, support....wanting to end ones life should NOT be a crime, like in the Netherlands. As someone mentioned in past remarks this could be taken advantage of by people who want to make a profit. From what Ive read in scripture and what Ive seen personally, taking ones life is a personal choice, the state should not be involved in this kind of legislature. The medical model we have here in America is based on profit and that makes everything much more complicated regarding end of life care. Most folk just dont have the money or insurance to swing this on their own and thats just wrong. Medicine is so expensive now its frightening. Im getting older, way past 50s and experienced chronic pain for years and thought about how easy it would be to take a pill and go to sleep for good. I cant work, I am a burden and so on.... Because of my ...
To the editor:. Imagine being a terminally ill patient, who is beyond human care and in excruciating pain. A neurosurgeon once showed a group of physicians and an ethicist a picture of a Vietnam casualty who had lost all four of his limbs in a landmine explosion. The catastrophe had reduced the soldier to a trunk with his face transfixed in horror.. Because of such devastating internal injuries, the soldier was not expected to make it through the year. In any event, this patient dies - whether by acts of nature or by the intentional acts of his physician.. On a whole, our social policy should allow terminal patients to seek help in death, because in a free society, such as ours, it should be a fundamental right to choose the time and manner of ones own death. The right to choose the course of ones death is as fundamental as the right to choose the course of ones own life.. Many times, I think that we safeguard our society, by not allowing controversial laws to be passed, because we are ...
Pro: Oregons nine-year experience with legalized physician-assisted death-not suicide-should reassure people that abuses have not occurred in Oregon. C&C President Barbara Coombs Lee told reporters, The practice has settled into a nice, safe, conservative practice. (AP, 3/8/07). Con: Oregons annual PAS reports do not prove that abuses have not occurred. They are based solely on reports by the doctors who prescribed the lethal drugs. The law gives no authorization to investigate unreported cases or cases of abuse and contains no penalties for doctors who do not comply with the law. Doctors who violate the law are not likely to tell on themselves.. Pro: The laws safeguards work.. Con: The safeguards were included only to get the bill passed. They do not provide any real protection for patients.. The law requires that the patient have a terminal disease that is expected to produce death within six months. Predictions of life-expectancy are highly unreliable. Isnt it probable that some ...
Emotional experiences for psychiatrists who are called upon to evaluate potential assisted suicide patients mental competency, appear to be more profound when they disqualify patients. Dr. Linda Ganzini described the painful experience of two patients whom she disqualified for the option of Oregons assisted suicide law.32She stated: These disqualifications resulted in extraordinary pain and anger for both of the patients and their families, which interfered with much-needed opportunities to resolve other emotional issues.33 Pain and anger is directed towards and felt by the evaluating psychiatrist. Such anger was energetically expressed by Kate Cheney, an Oregon PAS patient, whose evaluating psychiatrist told her, You cant make a decision for yourself and your life, because you are not in your right mind.34 Kate Cheneys angry response was Get out of my house. I cant believe you can tell me something like this.35 The significant anger towards the evaluating psychiatrist who ...

It is also clear that these nations no longer have any concept of God. If they did, they would see that these children are anything but hopeless and helpless. They are an opportunity for God to reveal His touch in their lives. You see many spina bifida victims, and they are the happiest people on earth. What about Nick Vujicec? Would he have been ministered euthanasia if he was born today? He is one of the most inspiring people in the world today. Who on earth do these so called bright politicians, doctors, even clergy think they are to determine who or who isnt a lost cause? Are they God? No! They dont even have the mind of God.. During the Second World War, the Nazis ran a Euthanasia Programme , an example of euphemism, under the direction of Philip Bouhler and Dr. Karl Brandt. The headquarters of the operation were at Tiergartenstrasse 4, Berlin and the code name for the program was derived from that address-T-4.. In practice it was used to exterminate lives unworthy of life as part of their racial hygiene concept and, as a result, at least 200,000 physically or mentally handicapped people were killed by medication, starvation, or in the gas chambers between 1939 and 1945. The victims were taken mainly from the medical institution and put to death ...

It may be the first time you have caught yourself in such a position where you have to decide to put down your pet. Its normal to feel anxious and to want to postpone the process to another date. But when you know what to expect, you will feel more in control and understand that euthanasia is not a punishment but rather designed to help your pet.. So what should you expect once you give the vet permission to euthanize? You will be briefed on what the entire procedure entails. At this point, you can ask as many questions as you need to understand better whats about to happen.. The pet will be placed on the table or the floor on a comfortable blanket. If they are too aggressive or unsettled, the pet may be sedated first.. A vet nurse, technician, or assistant will gently hold the animal as the veterinarian begins the process. You may be asked to stand at a distance to avoid any surprise jumps or attacks from the pet in case they sense your fear.. The vet will inject sodium pentobarbital in the ...
Background: Debates over legalisation of physician-assisted suicide (PAS) or euthanasia often warn of a slippery slope, predicting abuse of people in vulnerable groups. To assess this concern, the authors examined data from Oregon and the Netherlands, the two principal jurisdictions in which physician-assisted dying is legal and data have been collected over a substantial period.. Methods: The data from Oregon (where PAS, now called death under the Oregon Death with Dignity Act, is legal) comprised all annual and cumulative Department of Human Services reports 1998-2006 and three independent studies; the data from the Netherlands (where both PAS and euthanasia are now legal) comprised all four government-commissioned nationwide studies of end-of-life decision making (1990, 1995, 2001 and 2005) and specialised studies. Evidence of any disproportionate impact on 10 groups of potentially vulnerable patients was sought.. Results: Rates of assisted dying in Oregon and in the Netherlands showed no ...

In a long tradition of taking on controversial issues, HBO will be airing an original movie this month celebrating the life of Dr. Jack Kevorkian-or better known as Dr. Death. The film, You Dont Know Jack, stars Al Pacino as Jack Kevorkian alongside John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, and Danny Huston and follows the life and battles of the man who brought the issue of physician-assisted suicide into every home in the United States.. Kevorkian became famous in the 80s and 90s for being one of the most vocal and it could be argued theatrical supporters of the right to die and physician-assisted suicide. He claimed to have assisted in at least 130 suicides in his career and invented two machines, the Mercitron and Thanatron, designed to assist in the work.. Throughout the 90s, Kevorkian was tried several times for assisting suicides but was not found guilty until 1998, when he filmed the voluntary euthanasia of Thomas Youk and aired it on the TV-show 60 Minutes. He was found guilty of second-degree ...

Euthanasia and assisted suicide (EAS) have been legally possible in the Netherlands since 2001, provided that statutory due care criteria are met, including: (a) voluntary and well-considered request; (b) unbearable suffering without prospect of improvement; (c) informing the patient; (d) lack of a reasonable alternative; (e) independent second physicians opinion. Unbearable suffering must have a medical basis, either somatic or psychiatric, but there is no requirement of limited life expectancy. All EAS cases must be reported and are scrutinised by regional review committees (RTE). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether any particular difficulties arise when the EAS due care criteria are applied to patients with an intellectual disability and/or autism spectrum disorder. The 416 case summaries available on the RTE website (2012-2016) were searched for intellectual disability (6) and autism spectrum disorder (3). Direct content analysis was used on these nine cases. 1. Humane euthanasia. Swine producers are seeking a non-physical manner in which to humanely euthanize piglets. ARS researchers in West Lafayette, IN have found that a unique combination of gases are able to anesthetize piglets prior to euthanasia with a second more harmful gas to allow for humane euthanasia. Development of this technique for on-farm use will allow pigs to be humanely euthanized. It will also decrease the use of physical techniques of piglet euthanasia which are often criticized by animal rights groups and often found to be objectionable to perform by farm workers. 2. Osteoporosis in laying hens. Currently, most laying hens are housed in conventional cages in the United States, which limits their movement and ability to perform natural behavior, such as roosting, which can cause osteoporosis (a progressive decrease in mineralized structural bone). Osteoporosis causes 20 to 35% of all mortalities in caged White Leghorn hens. Reducing or eliminating osteoporosis associated with ...
The efficacy for the euthanasia of day-old chicks of mixtures of carbon dioxide and air, or carbon dioxide and argon containing 1, 2 or 5 per cent residual oxygen, or argon containing 1 or 2 per cent residual oxygen was tested in three experiments. The time to the onset of unconsciousness of individual chicks, determined from the time to loss of posture, was similar during their exposure to 2 per cent oxygen in argon, 20, 30 or 40 per cent carbon dioxide in argon with 2 per cent residual oxygen, or 90 per cent carbon dioxide in air. The exposure of chicks in batches of 20 to a mixture of 20, 30 or 40 per cent carbon dioxide in argon resulted in the death of all the chicks within two minutes. However, a residual oxygen level of 5 per cent in these mixtures resulted in the survival of some chicks for longer than two minutes. With argon alone the level of residual oxygen was critical; less than 2 per cent was essential to achieve 100 per cent mortality within three minutes, and a rise from 2 to ...

Vancouver, Canada, Sep 30, 2019 / 05:01 pm (CNA).- After Alan Nichols death by voluntary euthanasia at a British Columbia hospital in July, his family have questioned the imprecision of Canadas requirements for euthanasia and assisted suicide, which include having a grievous and irremediable medical condition.. They doubt Nichols was able to give informed consent to his euthanization, and maintain his natural death was not reasonably foreseeable.. According to a Sept. 24 article in CTV News based on accounts from Nichols family and a neighbor, Nichols was admitted to Chilliwack General Hospital, about 60 miles east of Vancouver, after he was found in poor physical condition at his home in mid-June.. Nichols, who was 61, was euthanized July 26 at the hospital by medical staff who delivered three injections.. He didnt have a life-threatening disease. He was capable of getting around. On Matters of Life and Death Physician-Assisted Suicide On Sunday, 24 January, John Jay Hooker, Tennessee lawyer, politician, and activist, died. Mr. Hooker had most recently championed death with dignity -physician-assisted suicide - in a proposed bill and in the courts. By the time of his death, neither the legislature nor the courts had provided him the decision he had recently pursued. The Death with Dignity bill was sponsored in the Tennessee legislature by Rep. Craig Fitzhugh, D-Ripley. Quoted in The Tennessean, Mr. Fitzhugh honored his friend, Mr. Hooker, with these ...
The economic woes that plague the United States will be invigorated through the Legalization of Marijuana. Embracing cannabis for personal, medical, and industrial use will encourage economic growth and stability. The war on drugs in America consumes millions of dollars annually. Associating taxes in conjunction with eliminating risk of illegal activity will increase consumer confidence whereas the ease of growing requirements will boost substantial profit. American economy can attain prosperity through Marijuana legalization. The history of Marijuana embargo is rich with debate and the future is known as cannabis commerce. Prohibition of the nineteenth century ushered in the popularity of breaking the law to obtain and consume alcoholic beverages. Elevated crime levels created the belief that alcohol was to blame for the horrendous acts upon society. Marijuana suffers the same judgment in America today, targeted as the primary reason for the ills that plague society. A growing number of ...
It isnt just stated within the US that are increasingly warming to marijuana legalization. In October 2018, Canada became the first G7 country to fully legalize marijuana nationwide. Elsewhere on the continent, Mexicos Supreme court ruled that prohibiting the use of marijuana is in violation of the countrys constitution, setting the stage for legalization there. ...
2. The Church teaches that abortion or euthanasia is a grave sin. The Encyclical Letter Evangelium vitae, with reference to judicial decisions or civil laws that authorize or promote abortion or euthanasia, states that there is a grave and clear obligation to oppose them by conscientious objection. [...] In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is therefore never licit to obey it, or to take part in a propaganda campaign in favour of such a law or vote for it (no. 73). Christians have a grave obligation of conscience not to cooperate formally in practices which, even if permitted by civil legislation, are contrary to Gods law. Indeed, from the moral standpoint, it is never licit to cooperate formally in evil. [...] This cooperation can never be justified either by invoking respect for the freedom of others or by appealing to the fact that civil law permits it or requires it (no. 74 ...
Accordingly, the SVA believes that pet euthanasia should be removed from the criminal law. That is why we took the decision to back the campaign calling for the decriminalisation of pet euthanasia across Serbia. The campaign calls for every pet owner to be given the necessary information to make their own informed choice as to whether or not to continue with a pet. The SVA is not advocating for or against pet euthanasia ...
About FACE:. Established in 2006 by a group of veterinarians and concerned community members, the Foundation for Animal Care and Education (FACE) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) public charity that provides financial grants for animal owners who are unable to afford the cost of their pets emergency or critical care.. The Problem: Economic Euthanasia. Each year, many animals are brought to their veterinarian with life-threatening conditions. Sadly, many owners cannot afford the critical care their beloved pets need to survive. They are left with one choice-euthanasia. Thousands of treatable pets are euthanized in veterinary hospitals annually. According to CPI reports, 13.8% of San Diegans fall below poverty level and 33% of San Diegans do not earn enough to cover basic expenses.. The Solution: The Save A Life Program. FACEs Save A Life Program was created to address the tragedy of economic euthanasia. What started out as a beautiful vision to stop the surrender and euthanasia of beloved family ...
That this House notes that over the years there have been numerous complaints by hon. Members regarding the persistent bias of the BBC on matters relating to euthanasia and other life issues and on the manner in which the BBC have misused public funds to promote changes in the law; further notes the bias of the Corporation applies not only to news programmes but to drama, with thinly-disguised plays and soap operas being used to promote the use of euthanasia and misrepresentation of pro-life activists in the UK as people of violence; further notes that these presentations have culminated in the last weeks with a multi-million pound campaign featuring Mrs Kay Gilderdale in Panorama and the fantasy fiction writer, Sir Terry Pratchett, given centre stage to present this years BBC Richard Dimbleby lecture calling for euthanasia and supported by the BBC website; further notes that as usual the BBC have ignored the rights of the disabled, despite the fact that every disability rights group in the UK ...

If you would consent to receive full medical treatment to stay alive for as long as possible then select the first definition in Part B by marking the corresponding checkbox.. (39) Selective Treatment. Some medical interventions and life-prolonging treatments can be considered invasive, detrimental, or even burdensome enough to be counter-productive (especially when the level of discomfort becomes intolerable). You can inform Illinois Medical Providers that you consent to medical interventions that will prolong your life so long as they are not invasive. For instance, the use of a mask to breathe with the aid of a machine may be acceptable but the use ...
MONDAY, June 14 (HealthDay News) -- Millions of Americans with a history of cancer, particularly people under age 65, are delaying or skimping on medical care because of worries about the cost of treatment, a new study suggests. The finding raises troubling questions about the long-term survival and quality of life of the 12 million adults in the United States whose lives have been forever changed by a diagnosis of cancer.. I think its concerning because we recognize that cancer survivors have many medical needs that persist for years after their diagnosis and treatment, said study lead author Kathryn E. Weaver, an assistant professor in the Department of Social Sciences & Health Policy at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.. The report was published online June 14 in Cancer, a journal of the American Cancer Society.. Cost concerns have posed a threat to cancer survivorship for some time, particularly with the advent of new, life-prolonging treatments.. Dr. ...
Marijuana Policy. Arizona PAC Plans to File 2018 Legalization Initiative. A political action committee called Safer Arizona was set to file a marijuana legalization initiative with state officials Thursday. Arizona voters narrowly devoted a similar measure last year, but organizers say this one will have some differences, including requiring that people be at least 21 before they can buy it. They will have to gather 150,000 valid voter signatures by July to qualify for the 2018 ballot.. Guam Legalization Bill Gets Hearing. In a hearing Tuesday on a marijuana legalization measure, Bill 8-34, representatives of the judiciary said they took no position on the bill, but cautioned that implementing legalization would require a review of the island territorys entire criminal code. Guam Customs and Quarantine acting chief, Maj. Phillip Taijeron also testified, saying he supported the will of the people. If the will of the people is to enact Bill 8-34, then I am in support of Bill 8-34, Taijeron ...
One key point - when they looked at who were the people who reported the most perceived need for hospice services, they looked at who were eligible for hospice care based on treatment preferences. They defined these patients (again, all of whom had less than 6 month prognoses without further treatment) as those who said they would NOT want any anti-cancer treatment even if it meant that it would guarantee them an almost 100% chance of surviving 6 months. Ie - those who would reject all life-prolonging treatment and are therefore eligible for hospice care based on goals (as well as prognosis based on the studys inclusion criteria). Notably, 13% of these patients (all of whom were receiving anti-cancer treatments) said they would not want any treatments even if it meant a guaranteed 6 month survival. This suggests that these 13% were receiving treatments they didnt actually want, thought they were receiving curative treatments, didnt understand the research questions, or some combination ...
Attitudes - cognitive representations of our evaluation of ourselves, other people, things, actions, events, ideas - and attitude change have been a central concern in social psychology since the discipline began. People can - and do - have attitudes on an infinite range of things but what are attitudes, how do we form them and how can they be modified? This book provides the student with a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the basic issues in the psychological study of attitudes. Drawing on research from Europe and the USA it presents up-to-date coverage of the key issues that will be encountered in this area, including attitude formation and change, functions of attitudes, attitude measurement, attitudes as temporary constructs, persuasion processes and prediction of behaviour from attitudes ...

Bioethics is a branch of ethical inquiry that examines the nature of biological and technological discoveries and the responsible use of biomedical advances, with particular emphasis upon their moral implications for our individual and common humanity.. The term bioethics, originally coined by Von Rensselaer in 1970, has evolved from a more specific emphasis upon medical ethics to include a wide range of issues such as allocation of healthcare resources, end-of-life treatment, euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, reproductive technologies, genetic intervention, stem cell research, cloning, neuroscience, and other emerging biotechnologies. While a branch of ethical inquiry, bioethics is interdisciplinary in nature integrating such diverse fields as the life sciences, medicine, biotechnology, philosophy, theology, public policy, and law.. The articles in this section explore some of the broader issues involved in bioethics, including theological and philosophical explorations central to ...
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/CNN) - New Jerseys right to die law goes into effect Thursday.. Gov. Phil Murphy signed the Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act on April 12, requiring either a psychiatrist or psychologist to determine that a patient has the mental capacity to make the final decision.. Allowing residents with terminal illnesses to make end-of-life choices for themselves is the right thing to do, said Murphy at the time. We are providing terminally ill patients and their families with the humanity, dignity, and respect that they so richly deserve at the most difficult times any of us will face.. Physician-assisted suicide differs from euthanasia, which is defined as the act of assisting people with their death in order to end their suffering, but without the backing of a controlling legal authority.. CBS2s Cindy Hsu spoke with the family of Herb Dunn, who wished to die with dignity for years. ...

The term twenty-twenty conjures up thoughts of the New Year, elections, hindsight and visual acuity. It incites me to make sure we all see clearly Oregons end-of-life landscape, the path the culture of assisted suicide activism is aiming to take us, and the threat that trajectory poses to all of us.. Recent legislative activity demonstrates the pro-euthanasia efforts in Oregon. These efforts seek to expand assisted suicide which would increase risk to the vulnerable, namely the old, disabled, seriously ill, discouraged, or others deemed to be lives not worth saving. I hope you will recognize the importance of acting now, for some day our loved ones and any of us may be the vulnerable ones.. Twenty-five years ago, Oregon citizens approved physician-assisted suicide (PAS). The general public expected that guidelines, so-called safeguards, would limit the use of assisted suicide to people in dire situations. Many though suspected this new law was just a foot in the door to general euthanasia. ...
I presume you mean section 73, which reads as follows:. 73. Abortion and euthanasia are thus crimes which no human law can claim to legitimize. There is no obligation in conscience to obey such laws; instead there is a grave and clear obligation to oppose them by conscientious objection. From the very beginnings of the Church, the apostolic preaching reminded Christians of their duty to obey legitimately constituted public authorities (cf. Rom 13:1-7; 1 Pet 2:13-14), but at the same time it firmly warned that we must obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29). In the Old Testament, precisely in regard to threats against life, we find a significant example of resistance to the unjust command of those in authority. After Pharaoh ordered the killing of all newborn males, the Hebrew midwives refused. They did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live (Ex 1:17). But the ultimate reason for their action should be noted: the midwives feared God (ibid.). It is precisely ...
Lawmakers formed a Marijuana subcommittee last week to fast-track debate on a legalization bill backed by the governor. The group held the first of two meetings this week.
Euthanasia and assisted suicide involve extinguishing human life. Research shows that humans have a basic instinct against killing other humans, which might be a source of the widely shared moral intuition that its wrong to do so. People who oppose euthanasia and assisted-suicide believe these interventions are inherently wrong - they cant be morally justified, and that even compassionate motives do not make them ethically acceptable - the ends do not justify the means.
DPN opposes the death penalty in all cases, unconditionally, regardless of the method chosen to kill the condemned prisoner. The death penalty is inherently cruel and degrading, an archaic punishment that is incompatible with human dignity. To end the death penalty is to abandon a destructive diversionary and divisive public policy that is not consistent with widely held values. The death penalty not only runs the risk of irrevocable error, it is also costly to the public purse as well as in social and psychological terms. The death penalty has not been proved to have a special deterrent effect. It tends to be applied in a discriminatory way on grounds of race and class. It denies the possibility of reconciliation and rehabilitation. It prolongs the suffering of the murder victims family and extends that suffering to the loved ones of the condemned prisoner. It diverts resources that could be better used to work against violent crime and assist those affected by it ...
A group including two former legislators and a Catholic nun argued the pentobarbital used by Missouri is obtained with an illegal prescription and is illegally manufactured. The state argued that the case should be dismissed because similar claims raised by inmates sentenced to death have already been dealt with, and said it is merely an attempt to block the execution of David Zink, scheduled for tomorrow.. Five other legal actions are being pursued including two that are before the U.S. Supreme Court, all seeking to halt Zinks execution. He was sentenced to death for the 2001 murder of Amanda Morton of Strafford.. Earlier story: Lawsuit alleges Missouri breaks laws in getting execution drug. ...
Deven Davis cause of death has been revealed. The estranged wife of Korn frontman Jonathan Davis died on August 18 at age 39 due to having five different drugs in her system, according to the autopsy obtained by TMZ. The couple, who married in 2004, shared sons Pirate, 13, and Zeppelin, 11, and were separated at the time of her death. On August 22, the 47-year-old singer took to Instagram to defend Deven, admitting that he had tried to hide her health issues, but hoped that he can now raise awareness and help others.. There has been a lot of speculation over what really happened surrounding the death of my wife, Deven, and I want my voice to be heard, the musician wrote on the social media platform. But with federal legislation comes a host of logistical and revenue issues for provinces and cities across the country. Vancouver may appear to have a head start, as the city established a licensing program for marijuana dispensaries in 2015, but it will need to follow provincial rules on the issue as well. The B.C. government is promising to introduce a regulatory framework for recreational marijuana prior to July 1, 2018. It has already released some details - 19 years of age will be the minimum age of consumption and purchase, and both private and public stores will ...
Trenton, NJ: Super-majorities of the New Jersey Assembly and Senate decided on Monday to place a marijuana legalization ballot question before voters in 2020.. Commenting on the legislative action, Garden State NORML Executive Director Charlana McKeithen said: We support any move beyond prohibition. Now marijuana consumers and anyone who supports reform can cast a vote for freedom. The question will appear as a constitutional amendment on the November election ballot. Senators voted 24 to 16 in favor of the effort, while members of the Assembly voted 49 to 24. State law requires that three-fifths of lawmakers in both chambers approve a resolution to place an amendment on the ballot. The ballot question will read: Do you approve amending the Constitution to legalize a controlled form of marijuana called cannabis? Only adults at least 21 years of age could use cannabis. The State commission created to oversee the States medical cannabis program would also oversee the new, personal use ...
Non-medical marijuana will likely be legalized across Canada in 2016. Legalization was among Justin Trudeaus campaign promises. The new prime minister has directed his minister of justice to create a federal-provincial-territorial process that will lead to the legalization and regulation of non-medical, recreational marijuana across the country.. Anticipating these changes, the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union and the B.C. Private Liquor Store Association have formed the Responsible Marijuana Retail Alliance of B.C. We are working together on a straightforward goal: to see legal, non-medical marijuana warehoused and distributed through the existing Liquor Distribution Branch system and sold in B.C. alongside alcohol in liquor stores.. Our two organizations have not taken a stand on the legalization or consumption of non-medical marijuana. Legalization is inevitable. Being pragmatic, we believe marijuana should be sold in the most socially responsible way possible, in age-controlled ...
Texas used a three-drug lethal injection cocktail for nearly three decades. But since 2011, a dwindling drug supply has forced Texas and other states to find other drugs to administer the death penalty.
