I had to euthanize my cat, Victoria, over the weekend. I thought I would share her story as a form of eulogy and to once again illustrate that even when the decision to euthanize is obviously correct, it is never easy. Read more.

Experiments at the University of Florida Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory were run to test various shipping chemical additives for their effects on appearance and behavior of fish post shipping. The chemicals tested were tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222), salt (3 ppt NaCl), methylene blue, acriflavine neutral, quinaldine, eugenol, an experimental commercial product in the form of a feed, and a water additive.. The commercial product contained arachidonic acid (ArA), a fungus extract from Mortierella sp., claimed by the manufacturer to be used to regulate immune systems; and an ethanol extract from the genus Opuntia, a cactus species, claimed by the manufacturer to be used to stimulate the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs) that work to counteract stress responses.. Tricaine methanesulfonate is approved for use in finfish as a sedative and anesthetic. Quinaldine and eugenol are not approved for use in aquaculture. A description of approval for the other chemicals tested in this experiment ...
1. Humane euthanasia. Swine producers are seeking a non-physical manner in which to humanely euthanize piglets. ARS researchers in West Lafayette, IN have found that a unique combination of gases are able to anesthetize piglets prior to euthanasia with a second more harmful gas to allow for humane euthanasia. Development of this technique for on-farm use will allow pigs to be humanely euthanized. It will also decrease the use of physical techniques of piglet euthanasia which are often criticized by animal rights groups and often found to be objectionable to perform by farm workers. 2. Osteoporosis in laying hens. Currently, most laying hens are housed in conventional cages in the United States, which limits their movement and ability to perform natural behavior, such as roosting, which can cause osteoporosis (a progressive decrease in mineralized structural bone). Osteoporosis causes 20 to 35% of all mortalities in caged White Leghorn hens. Reducing or eliminating osteoporosis associated with ...
About us. Where animals live, animals die. Sometimes planned and sometimes unplanned. Death is inherent in life. We believe that the existing euthanasia methods should be better. Our method utilizes the nature. With nitrogen from the air we make foam that is filled with 99% nitrogen. Immersion leads almost instantly into unconsciousness. After a few minutes this leads to a painless death. Without significant stress.. ...
Leias owners are ready for euthanasia. Who do you want to do it?". It really was a sad situation. Leia, a 12-year-old Jack Russell, had been losing weight over several weeks. She was vomiting and anorexic.. Laparotomy confirmed exactly what the referring vets ultrasound had indicated: a small intestinal mass and enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. Jejunal resection and anastomosis, as well as biopsies of a lymph node and the liver were uneventful.. The following day, Leia remained lethargic and anorexic. She continued to vomit and became hypoglycemic. Hypoglycemia strongly suggested cancer, with lymphoma high on the differential list.. Despite intensive care, she didnt improve. The next day, the "stat" biopsy confirmed the suspicion of lymphoma in all three locations: jejunum, lymph node and liver.. The owner visited and eventually elected euthanasia. Without any doubt, they were doing the humane thing.. Because I was in the middle of a splenectomy, I couldnt perform euthanasia myself, and ...
Isoflurane is one of the safest and most accepted anesthetic agents for reptiles, birds, and mammals. It has also been used in terrestrial amphibians. The use of inhalation agents in an entirely aquatic frog presents a new dilemma for delivery in contrast to terrestrial species. The African Clawed Frog respires by using both transcutaneous gas exchange and air breathing. These frogs remain submerged for long periods of time, thus making standard inhalation techniques impractical. We tested five methods for delivering isoflurane: 1) bubbling isoflurane and oxygen in the water, 2) intracoelomic injection, 3) subcutaneous injection, 4) intramuscular injection, and 5) topical application. For the topical application, we developed a simple technique by using an absorptive pad with a vapor-barrier backing, saturating the pad with the liquid isoflurane, and placing the pad on the back of the frog while it was confined in a plastic bowl. Although two of the three injectable routes induced anesthesia, ...

Visceral botryomycosis is rare, and documented sites are lung, brain, kidney, liver and prostate. This report describes a rare autopsy case of disseminated visceral botryomycosis, with bulky, grape-like botryomycotic vegetations in the heart, and similar abscesses in the lungs and bone marrow. This is the first such report in the literature to the best of our knowledge.
Millions of laboratory animals are killed each year worldwide. There is an ethical, and in many countries also a legal, imperative to ensure those deaths cause minimal suffering. However, there is a lack of consensus regarding what methods of killing are humane for many species and stages of development. In 2013, an international group of researchers and stakeholders met at Newcastle University, United Kingdom to discuss the latest research and which methods could currently be considered most humane for the most commonly used laboratory species (mice, rats and zebrafish). They also discussed factors to consider when making decisions about appropriate techniques for particular species and projects, and priorities for further research. This report summarises the research findings and discussions, with recommendations to help inform good practice for humane killing.
Euthanasia is an unpleasant but sometimes necessary aspect of all animal health cares. Some scientists and vets have strongly criticized some of the methods
There is appropriateness in all things and sometimes you create for yourselves what seems to be inappropriate. Yet later you understand what the gift was within the challenge. Celebrate Terri, and dont think of this as a shameful thing that Humans did to her. Think of it instead as a book that was written for you to look at, one which pushes you to a place to ask, "What should we do about this now, personally? What should our legislatures do about this, if anything? How can we approach these things more humanely and with more honor? Is our culture addressing this issue? Are we addressing this issue personally?" Lets put these questions where they belong. Its not about "right to life"; its about the appropriateness of "this life." Each case is individual, and some are profoundly given for the planet and for those around the individual. ...

4) The agency having custody of the animal may euthanize the animal or may find a responsible person to adopt the animal not less than fifteen business days after the animal is taken into custody. A custodial agency may euthanize severely injured, diseased, or suffering animals at any time. An owner may prevent the animals destruction or adoption by: (a) Petitioning the district court of the county where the animal was seized for the animals immediate return subject to court-imposed conditions, or (b) posting a bond or security in an amount sufficient to provide for the animals care for a minimum of thirty days from the seizure date. If the custodial agency still has custody of the animal when the bond or security expires, the animal shall become the agencys property unless the court orders an alternative disposition. If a court order prevents the agency from assuming ownership and the agency continues to care for the animal, the court shall order the owner to post or renew a bond or ...
When you bring a dog home for the first time, youre probably in love with him already, even if you barely know him. He may not be completely sure of you yet, but in time he will love you every bit as much as you love him. Over the years there will be chewed socks, dumped over houseplants, puddles of urine at the front door, and probably plenty of piles of dog poo to pick up.. You will become closer to your dog that you will anyone else on the planet. In a recent survey, women confessed they kiss their pet more than their husband or boyfriend. They are always there for you and with you.. When you cry, theyll come and sit down, looking at you with big brown eyes, as if to say, "Its okay, Im here to listen to you." They will listen to you too. They will snuggle with you when you feel terrible and they will always be there to greet you when you get home from work, ready to love you no matter what type of day youve had.. Early in the morning, when your breath is bad, your hair is standing up, ...

When is (active) infanticide morally permissible?. 1. Infanticide is morally permissible when there is little chance for a full human life and a great likelihood of suffering.. 2. Infanticide is morally permissible when there is great cost to prolonging life.. Who should decide when to euthanize?. Since the child is socially considered a person only in virtue of being a member of a family, it follows that the parents have the right to determine when it is appropriate to euthanize their children.. ...

When Louis brought Nadia for her dental cleaning and evaluation, he was pleased to know her bloodwork and blood pressure were good and that we could help with her bad breath. As he left, he spoke softly to her, stroked her head, smiled and wished her luck. We never imagined that we would find a mass under her tongue that would end her life.. After her diagnosis, we talked to Louis about his choices. He decided he could be her nurse for awhile but wouldnt do any more surgery. We started hospice care at home. Nadia had been with him longer than many of his friends and family. His wife said that Nadia was Joined "at the hip" to Louis and would spend every waking minute with him if she could. They were soulmates she told us.. After a time, the tumor became larger and she lost interest in eating. Louis knew the time had come but wished with all his heart that he did not have to make this choice. He hoped and hoped that she would die on her own, without suffering. Then he knew she would not.. They ...

The recalled products were distributed online and through independent boutique pet stores nationwide.. FDA initiated an investigation of Evangers manufacturing facilities in early last January, after receiving word that a dog had died and four other dogs had been sickened following ingesting food from a can of Evangers Hunk of Beef.. Lab testing revealed the presence of pentobarbital, a euthanasia agent, in the stomach contents of the dead dog, in the remnants of food from the opened can, and in food from unopened cans of the same production lot of Hunk of Beef obtained from the owner of the dogs and from the retailer. Additional lab testing, carried out by FDA, detected pentobarbital in a can of Against the Grain Pulled Beef canned dog food.. Against the Grain Pulled Beef is manufactured by Evangers.. In an advisory to consumers, released on February 17 and updated on March 3, FDA reported that a bill of lading from Evangers supplier, which the pet food manufacturer had claimed was "USDA ...

Translated by IASW Physicians caring for Hugo Chávez in Havana have notified his family, the Castro brothers, and the main chavista leaders that their patient will no longer be able to return to his functions as president of Venezuela. This is according to sources in direct contact with his medical team, who also indicate that Chávez has lost his voice completely as a result of medical treatment. His vocal cords have endured permanent damage making recuperation highly unlikely. Speechless and unable to move from the bed in which he has spent the last two months, our sources tell us the president is very depressed. A public announcement by the government explaining that Chavez will be unable to resume his duties will be released in the upcoming days, and has already been circulating among members of the Supreme Court ...

Kvitnu Stray Dogs is a Belgian duo counting Frederik Meulyzer on percussion and electronics and Koenraad Ecker on cello, guitars, and electronics. And the days began to walk is the duos third album, following Intangible States (Stray Dogs, 2010) and Wasteland (Stray Dogs, Icarus Records/Vynilla Vinyl, 2013). Plus the Kalkar EP (Stray Dogs, 2015), which was recorded in the imposing cooling tower of a former power station in Germany, and the score for the theatre piece "Animal" (Stray Dogs, 2013).. And the days began to walk is a six track, punch beat album. It is a recording holding darkness but its also showing light at the end of the tunnel, music-wise. The opening "Phaeton" holds a steady, driving punch. Polyrhythmic. Instrumental mechanics. Melodic electronics. Man machines and human movements. Dance moves, I guess, as the music on And the days... was, according to Stray Dogs, composed for contemporary dance performances by the renowned choreographers Ina Christel Johannessen [Norway] ...
1. Animals entering shelters and rescue. Humane sheltering protocol should always consider the animals health, safety, and administration of drugs when shelter animals must be euthanized.. Every consideration should be given to each individual life. When an animal can be adopted or accepted by rescue the animal should be released to a properly licensed rescue or acceptable home. Every breed of animal should be given consideration for rescue.. 2. Adequate food source and health condition of animals.. Upon entering the shelter the animal condition should be evaluated and a determination should be made if veterinarians services are required or if the animal is too sick or injured and should be euthanized. Every animals condition should be documented and photographed and entered into a ledger and filed by date.. The animals entering the shelter should be given food and water and an amount that is sufficient to that animals health and well being.. Food chart for Dogs. Weight of Dog (lbs) - Suggested ...
In Belgium, which legalised euthanasia in 2002, there has been a 500% increase in euthanasia deaths over ten years between 2003 and 2012. High profile cases include Mark and Eddy Verbessem, the 45-year-old deaf identical twins, who were euthanised by the Belgian state, after their eyesight began to fail; then there is Nathan/Nancy Verhelst, whose life was ended in front of TV cameras, after a series of botched sex-change operations. His mother said she hated girls, found her child so ugly at birth and did not mourn his death. And then there is Ann G, who had anorexia and who opted to have her life ended after being sexually abused by the psychiatrist who was supposed to be treating her for the life-threatening condition. ...

If you dont know where to start, or feel comfortable composing an email, and are concerned about the unaccounted for animals, feel free to either copy and paste my emails to both Governor, Haley and Lieutenant Governor, Ard below. Or, use it as guide to help your thoughts and words flow. To me its important to be direct, polite, and temper the anger, yet demand justice. Also, its helpful to personalize causes and issues when dealing with politicians. Trust me, I know this from experience in trying to bring awareness to Epilepsy and my husband and I have rubbed shoulders with many politicians from the local, state and even the federal level. So, I chose to include a link to my initial blog entry, to put the faces of three dogs in theirs that represent the ones who were spared. Yet, could be in the landfill -- killing field, or as the Sheriff calls it, a "pet cemetery". I want accountability for the 80 or more dogs and cats who are showing as euthanized by the Animal Shelters own records. ...
