Appingedam is a city in the Dutch province of Groningen (2005 population 12,451). It is known that there was an Anabaptist center here in the early days of the movement, for in 1537 Obbe Philipsordained his brother Dirk Philipsas bishop in Den Dam. Leenaert Bouwens in 20 visits between 1551 and 1557 baptized 93 persons; between 1557 and 1563, five persons; and between 1563 and 1568, in five visits31, persons, totaling 129. About 1596 Jan Gerrits van Emden became the preacher here, after he had been living in Appingedam for 20 years. In 1606 he moved to Haarlem, and soon after to Danzig. The congregation at Appingedam, which belonged to the Groninger Old Flemish group, was relatively strong in the 17th century, but declined in the second half of the 18th, at least in part in consequence of the Collegiant disputes. Its membership was in 1710, 50 men; in 1733, 26 men and 33 women; in 1754 only 15 men and 15 women; in 1767, only 14 members. To be sure, it had in 1754 a considerable number of ...

Eduard Verhagen is an attorney and the medical director of the department of pediatrics at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). He is mainly known for his involvement in infant euthanasia in the Netherlands. Euthanasia is legal for patients over the age of 12 in the Netherlands. Verhagen, who studied both law and medicine, worked out a protocol with prosecutors and doctors in 2002 for infant euthanasia cases. This Groningen Protocol requires that the parents and teams of physicians and social workers agree that further treatment is futile. After a waiting period of several days, during which the parents can think over the decision and say goodbye, euthanasia is performed. The case records are subsequently turned over to the prosecutors office. If this protocol is followed, prosecutors will refrain from pressing charges. In July 2005, this protocol was introduced nationwide in the Netherlands. In 2005, the New England Journal of Medicine published an article by Verhagen and his ...

Your approach of adjust or die is a bit idealistic. While in some senses the world is brutal like that, statistical trends suggest that the vast majority of human beings dont perform well or simply adjust when theyre in a situation that they dont like. They can cope, certainly, but performance is really affected. Telling everybody to just lump it isnt actually going to result in most of them successfully managing to do just that. I think its possible you see this more at University than you do in a job. In many jobs you can get by just doing whats expected of you, and youre not assessed and rated against other people doing exactly the same work in the way that you are in education. (you still are assessed obviously, but its quite different.) - I have been in the workplace for a few years in a number of jobs, incidentally ...
At the level of the cell extracellular stimuli together with instructions from other cells, arrive at the cell surface in extracellular liquids, as dissolved gases, or by direct contact. Through the process of cell signalling, stimuli received are turned into responses that bring about cell differentiation and division, the regulation of specific or specialist functions, and live or die commands that balance tissue growth.. In intracellular signalling a signal arriving at the cell surface is received by a receptor molecularly tuned to receive it. This signal is called a first messenger. If the chemical is membrane soluble, as are many steroid hormones, it can quickly move into the cytoplasm; if membrane insoluble, a second messenger signalling chemical is produced. This relays the signal into the interior of the cell. Inside the cell a response is produced within the cytoplasm or nucleus as appropriate. Examples of first messengers are steroid hormones, growth factors, chemoattractants and ...
For example, the Report indicates there has been one case of the use of euthanasia on disabled babies in the Netherlands. This is probably correct in the short time since the Groningen protocol allowing such euthanasia was formally accepted. But, prior to that, an article in the New England Journal of Medicine documents 22 cases of babies with spina bifida being euthanized, which is not mentioned. Such "pro-euthanasia presentations" of the facts are concerning and misleading. Likewise, the availability in the Netherlands of euthanasia for children is not mentioned. The combination of euthanasia and donation of organs for transplant in Belgium and the recent case in Flanders of "joint euthanasia" of a terminally ill man and his healthy wife are ignored. And a survey of Belgian physicians who had carried out euthanasia, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, which showed 32 percent of those physicians had carried out euthanasia without the patients request or consent is never ...

The objective of this paper is to understand from a sociological perspective how the moral question of euthanasia, framed as the right to die, emerges and is dealt with in society. It takes France and Germany as case studies, two countries in which euthanasia is prohibited and which have similar legislation on the issue. I presuppose that, and explore how, each society has its own specificities in terms of practical, social and political norms that affect the ways in which they deal with these issues. The paper thus seeks to understand how requests for the right to die emerge in each society, through both the debate (analysis of daily newspapers, medical and philosophical literature, legal texts) and the practices (ethnographic work in three French and two German hospitals) that elucidate the phenomenon. It does so, however, without attempting to solve the moral question of euthanasia. In spite of the differences observed between these two countries, the central issue at stake in their respective

I do not want the taxes I pay going to kill any person even if they want to die. I feel there should be help for those who want to end their life, counseling, support....wanting to end ones life should NOT be a crime, like in the Netherlands. As someone mentioned in past remarks this could be taken advantage of by people who want to make a profit. From what Ive read in scripture and what Ive seen personally, taking ones life is a personal choice, the state should not be involved in this kind of legislature. The medical model we have here in America is based on profit and that makes everything much more complicated regarding end of life care. Most folk just dont have the money or insurance to swing this on their own and thats just wrong. Medicine is so expensive now its frightening. Im getting older, way past 50s and experienced chronic pain for years and thought about how easy it would be to take a pill and go to sleep for good. I cant work, I am a burden and so on.... Because of my ...
