Advertisements included newspaper, television, radio, Internet, distributed brochures, utility bill inserts, and direct mailing. ...
Race often is confounded with other variables such as poverty, low education, and discrimination (43). One important challenge for future research therefore lies in disentangling apparent effects of race from effects associated with these other factors. Freeman (43) suggested that, to reduce health disparities, researchers must uncover the real variables responsible for maintaining Black-White differences in health outcomes. The current review identifies a number of these variables. Research would benefit from further investigation of the specific pathways through which these social, cultural, and economic barriers translate into disparate breast cancer outcomes.. Low socioeconomic status, a variable that frequently characterizes African American women, plays an especially important role in maintaining Black-White disparities in breast cancer mortality (7). Studies have showed that controlling for socioeconomic status can reduce or even eliminate the association between race and breast cancer ...
Abstract: Although the leading cause of death among black men in the United States is coronary artery disease (CAD), risk factors have not been well documented in black populations. Therefore, possible racial differences in the relation of several characteristics to the extent of CAD were assessed in 4,722 white and 169 black men who underwent arteriography. Associations between an occlusion score (ranging from 0 to 300), reflecting the severity of CAD, and levels of total and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, relative weight, systemic hypertension and diabetes mellitus were examined. Most risk factors were significantly related to the extent of CAD in both races, but lipid levels showed stronger associations with CAD among blacks: correlations between CAD and total cholesterol were 0.16 (whites) vs 0.29 (blacks) and associations with HDL cholesterol were -0.22 (whites) vs -0.49 (blacks). In addition, at adverse levels of certain risk ...
The main finding of this study is that racial differences exist in the mechanism underlying obesity‐associated hypertension in women. Similar to our previous findings,6 obese white women with hypertension have an excess sympathetic activity that contributes to hypertension as measured by BP variability (LFSBP). In contrast, obese black women with hypertension do not have elevated measures of sympathetic activity, and BP without sympathetic vascular tone remained elevated in these women. These findings suggest that hypertension in obese black women is independent of increased sympathetic vascular tone.. Previous studies have evaluated the contribution of the sympathetic nervous system to BP regulation in black patients. Calhoun et al12 showed that blacks have similar resting MSNA compared with whites. MSNA was increased after painful stimuli such as cold pressor test, but only in black patients with a family history of hypertension.13 Subsequently, in a large cohort of black men and women, ...

Locally weighted scatterplot smoothing-smoothed curves showed that non-HDL-C levels increased from 101 mg/dL at age 6 to 111 mg/dL at age 10, decreased to 101 mg/dL at age 14, and then increased to 122 mg/dL at age 19 in non-Hispanic white males. Non-HDL-C levels generally were greater in female than male subjects, lower in non-Hispanic black subjects, and similar in male and slightly lower in female Mexican American subjects, compared with non-Hispanic white subjects. The overall mean was 108 (SE 0.5), and the percentiles were 67 (5th), 74 (10th), 87 (25th), 104 (50th), 123 (75th), 145 (90th), and 158 (95th) mg/dL. Mean and percentiles were greater among age groups 9-11 and 17-19 years than others and greater among non-Hispanic white than non-Hispanic black subjects. The prevalence of high non-HDL-C was 11.8% (95% CI 9.9%-14.0%) and 15.0% (95% CI 12.9%-17.3%) for the age groups 9-11 and 17-19, respectively. It varied significantly by race/ethnicity and overweight/obesity status ...

The findings of this study will also determine whether there are racial differences in the whole body and cellular mechanisms by which aerobic exercise training and weight loss affect glucose, lipid, fat and muscle metabolism in African-American vs. Caucasian postmenopausal women. The results also may provide a rationale for targeting specific populations of women who might improve glucose, lipid, fat and muscle metabolism more from the addition of exercise to dietary restriction than weight loss alone to reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.. The study protocol consists of the following phases:. Phase 1-Recruitment and screening.. Phase 2-Weight and dietary stabilization for 4-6 weeks, where participants are taught the principles of the American Heart Association Heart Healthy diet and provided food to consume prior to testing.. Phase 3-Participants will undergo research testing including glucose clamp and fat biopsy.. Phase 4-Participants select either weight loss ...
Apartheid South Africa looked after white people and nobody else. Now some of its white communities face a level of deprivation, or of violence, which threatens their future in the country.. Everyone here, regardless of colour, tells you that white people are still riding high.. They run the economy. They have a disproportionate amount of influence in politics and the media. They still have the best houses and most of the best jobs.. All of this is true but it is not the only picture.. Look below the surface and you will find poverty and a sense of growing vulnerability.. The question I have come to South Africa to answer is whether white people genuinely have a future here.. The answer, as with so many similar existential questions, is Yes - but…. It seems to me that only certain parts of the white community really have a genuine future here: the better-off, more adaptable parts.. Working-class white people, most of them Afrikaans-speakers, are going through an intense crisis. But you will ...

Compared to the 1997 findings from girls across the U.S., girls in the current study - especially white girls - were more developed at a younger age. As previous research has shown, there were also large differences in development based on race.. At age 7, approximately 10 percent of white girls and 23 percent of black girls had started developing breasts - compared to 5 percent of white girls and 15 percent of black girls in 1997, the authors write.. Among 8-year-olds in the study, 18 percent of white girls and 43 percent of black girls had entered puberty - an increase from around 11 percent of white girls from 1997, but the same as black girls in that year.. ...

Results: In 2014, approximately 631,000 persons in the United States received a diagnosis of a cancer associated with overweight and obesity, representing 40% of all cancers diagnosed. Overweight- and obesity-related cancer incidence rates were higher among older persons (ages ≥50 years) than younger persons; higher among females than males; and higher among non-Hispanic black and non-Hispanic white adults compared with other groups. Incidence rates for overweight- and obesity-related cancers during 2005-2014 varied by age, cancer site, and state. Excluding colorectal cancer, incidence rates increased significantly among persons aged 20-74 years; decreased among those aged ≥75 years; increased in 32 states; and were stable in 16 states and the District of Columbia ...
I would also argue that biological race is not a particularly meaningful concept the vast majority of the time. In fact, I think that the term biological race is probably completely inappropiate for the usage that I am thinking of, which involves the use of self-reported race/ethnicity to serve as a marker (albeit poor) for ancestry (which has both a biological and social/cultural component). Specifically, the only times that self-reported race/ethnicity has served some useful biological purpose, in my experience, is when it has served as a marker for ancestry in a genetic study that didnt have a better marker of ancestry. This role for self-reported race/ethnicity could be completely replaced if there were better markers for ancestry available. In the recent past the only way to get any marker of ancestry was to either ask people directly about their ancestry (time-consuming and most people dont have very accurate information) or at a very minimum ask for their self-reported race/ethnicity ...

Some aspects of homogamy are well understood. People of the same race, social status, and religion, tend to assort together, and eventually marry. A new paper in PNAS reports results which suggest that there is an elevated relatedness between spouses even among non-Hispanic whites. The paper is Genetic and educational assortative mating among US adults. One of the key findings is that within its demographic of non-Hispanic whites educational assortment dwarfs genetic assortment.* That shouldnt be surprising, and educational attainment is a major filter in terms of suitable spouse material.. At this point Im assuming most readers are wondering what the surprise is: non-Hispanic whites are not ethnically or socially homogeneous. So the genetic relatedness might simply be due to regional and cultural variation which exhibits genetic correlation. The authors attempted to control for this by only looking at people from a particular region, filtering out population structure by looking at PCA ...

rs1799884, known also as the -30 SNP of the GCK gene, has been associated with type-2 diabetes. This SNP is one of 4 relatively common SNPs reported to represent risk for type-2 diabetes in the DESIR prospective study of 3,877 Caucasian participants. Under a recessive model, the odds ratio for rs1799884(A;A) homozygotes is 2.70 (CI: 1.51-4.83, p=0.0008); under an additive model, the odds ratio is 1.34 (CI: 1.07-1.69, p=0.01). For the 4 SNPs, each risk allele increased type-2 diabetes risk by 1.34x (p=2x10e-6), with an odds ratio of 2.48 (CI: 1.59-3.86) for carriers of 4 or more compared to those with one or none (risk alleles).[PMID 17977958] ...

African Americans are more insulin resistant than Caucasian Americans and this discrepancy cannot be explained by measures of body weight or body composition. The aim of the study was to compare the sensitivity of African Americans and Caucasian Americans to glucocorticoids by measuring glucose and insulin responses to a meal challenge under conditions of placebo and glucocorticoid. A total of 160 healthy or overweight/obese African American and Caucasian American participants completed exercise testing and a liquid meal challenge during separate laboratory visits. Participants were evaluated following treatments with placebo and dexamethasone (4 mg). Main outcome measures were correlation between body composition measures (body mass index, percent body fat, waist circumference) and insulin responses; insulin and glucose responses after a liquid meal challenge; and calculated HOMA. After dexamethasone treatment African Americans were significantly more hyperinsulinemic after a meal as indicated by

Background: Neuroblastoma (NBL) is an often-fatal pediatric cancer more frequent in European-American than African-American children. African-American children, however, are at higher risk for the more severe form of NBL, and have worse overall survival than European-American children. Genome wide association studies (GWAS) have identified several SNPs associated to NBL in children of European descent. Knowledge of their association to NBL in African-American children is still lacking. Methods: We genotyped and imputed SNPs located in three gene regions reported to be associated to NBL in children of European descent, and tested them for association in 390 African-American NBL patients compared to 2500 healthy, ethnically matched controls. Results: SNPs in the BARD1 gene region show a similar pattern of association to NBL in African-American and European-American children. The more restricted extent of linkage disequilibrium in the African-American population suggests a smaller candidate region ...

In this study, for the first time, we assessed the prognostic value of the codon 72 polymorphism of p53 in African American and Caucasian patients with colorectal cancers and showed that this polymorphism, specifically the Pro/Pro phenotype, is an independent factor of prognosis for African American patients. Similar frequencies of p53 mutations were observed in both African American and Caucasian patients. However, the incidence of the homozygous mutant variant Pro/Pro was higher in African American patients as compared with Caucasians; in contrast, the wild-type Arg/Arg variants were more common in Caucasians than in African Americans. In African American patients, colorectal cancers with Pro/Pro mutant phenotypes exhibited a higher incidence of p53 mutations, specifically of the disruptive type, and were associated with nodal metastasis and short overall survival. These aggressive phenotypic features of the Pro/Pro mutant phenotype were not observed in Caucasian patients. Thus, these findings ...
Racial/ethnic disparities in life expectancy are well known, with particular disadvantage for black Americans, but scientists have not considered the potential damage to survivors; this project will focus on those survivors to provide the first population-based analysis of race/ethnic differences in exposure to the death of multiple family members over the life course and how those exposures contribute to racial/ethnic disparities in health and mortality across the life course. This project is designed to produce results that will ground specific policy and intervention strategies to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in health, thus captures the spirit of Healthy People 2020 and advances the general goals of NIH. ...

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine say metastatic colorectal cancer patients of African-American descent are less likely to be seen by cancer specialists or receive cancer treatments. This difference in treatment explains a large part of the 15 percent higher mortality experienced by African-American patients than non-Hispanic white patients. The study, published online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, noted there was no difference in risk of death when black patients received the same treatments, such as chemotherapy and surgery, as non-Hispanic white patients. Other studies have looked at racial disparities in treatment and still others have focused on racial differences in survival rates of cancer patients, but our research attempted to go further by demonstrating the impact of race-based inequalities in cancer treatment on survival rates of black colorectal cancer patients, said James D. The breast cancer mortality rate for black women in the US is 30.7 deaths per 100,000 women, while the mortality rate for white women is 21.4 deaths per 100,000, according to new research from the Sinai Urban Health Institute, funded by the Avon Foundation for Women. That means the rate of breast cancer deaths is 43.1% higher in black women than white women. The study, published Monday in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, looked at race-specific breast cancer deaths between 2010-2014 in the 50 largest cities in the US. This is a follow-up to their 2014 study, which found that black women in the US were 39.7% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women were between the years 2005-2009. African-Americans with colon cancer are half as likely as Caucasian patients to have a type of colon cancer that is linked to better outcomes. The finding may provide insight into why African-Americans are more likely to die of colon cancer than Caucasians with the same stage of disease.. The population-based study of 503 people with colon cancer found that 14 percent of Caucasians and 7 percent of African-Americans had a genetic marker called microsatellite instability, or MSI. These types of tumors are known to be resistant to the chemotherapy drug 5FU. Yet, even without chemotherapy, these patients tend to have better outcomes.. We know that patients with MSI colon cancer do better without chemotherapy. But these improved survival benefits are limited among African-Americans with colon cancer, says lead study author John M. Carethers, M.D., John G. Searle Professor and Chair of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School.. Results of the study appear in the journal PLOS ...
Fewer than half of American adults get vaccinated despite strong recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and widespread availability of free and low-cost vaccines. Furthermore, African Americans are less likely to get the flu shot than white Americans, and concerns about side effects from the vaccine play a large role in this disparity. According to the CDC, only 41 percent of African American adults received the flu vaccine compared with 47 percent of white adults.
At the population level, diabetes is a stronger risk factor for new heart failure (HF) than 4 other modifiable risk factors, namely smoking, dyslipidemia, obesity, and hypertension, suggests the latest analysis from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study cohort. ARIC is a longitudinal study of more than 15,000 African American and Caucasian men and women in 4 communities across the United States, who were recruited during the 1980s when they were aged 45 to 64. The current analysis included 14,709 of the participants followed an average of 17.6 years.. According to the authors, the lifetime risk of incident heart failure was about 1 in 3 for its African American participants and reached 1 in 4 in Caucasians. In both groups, that risk was higher than the lifetime risk of new coronary heart disease or stroke in the same population. In addition, they found that a percentage drop in diabetes prevalence would avert more cases of new HF than the same percentage decrease of any of the 4 ...

In comparison to healthy white children, healthy Black children are more likely to suffer complications and deaths after surgery, a new study finds.
There is a wide variation of health indicators between the whites and other minor races like the Africans, Indians, Latinos, Asians, and Hispanics in America. In comparison to the whites, the most hit minor races are African American and the Indians in America.. Although the infant mortality rate in the U.S is relatively low, the number of African American infants who die each year still stands high doubling that of the whites. Africans who suffer and die from cardiovascular diseases are about 40% higher than the whites are, while African American cancer patients are 30% more than the whites are.. Thus, the two commonest cancers; prostrate and breast; mainly affect Africans despite a similarity in the screening rates. In addition, deaths among African Americans from the HIV/AIDS pandemic are about seven times higher than in the whites (CDC, 2010). Finally, homicide cases in Africans remain high when compared to the whites.. Diabetes, high blood pressure, tuberculosis, and obesity cases are high ...
BACKGROUND: Although increased attention has been paid to sex and racial differences in the management of myocardial infarction, it is unknown whether these differences have narrowed over time. METHODS: With the use of data from the National Registry of Myocardial Infarction, we examined sex and racial differences in the treatment of patients who were deemed to be ideal candidates for particular treatments and in deaths among 598,911 patients hospitalized with myocardial infarction between 1994 and 2002. RESULTS: In the unadjusted analysis, sex and racial differences were observed for rates of reperfusion therapy (for white men, white women, black men, and black women: 86.5, 83.3, 80.4, and 77.8 percent, respectively; P ...
Study shows that white medical students and residents often hold fantastical stereotypes about blacks that may explain why African Americans are less likely to receive pain medication.
Only 37% of African-American children ages 6 to 12 participated in outdoor recreation in 2011, compared to 67% of Caucasian children in the same age range. Discovering Natures African-American targeted campaign shows how the experience of exploring and discovery in the forest can open up children in this target to a world of possibilities; including their own limitless potential.
On the other hand, although African-Americans are disproportionately likely to be poor, they are only a quarter of Americans living in poverty; whites make up about 41% of the poor. (If the distribution were proportional, whites would by 70-some percentage of the poor and African-Americans would be 13%). Those white Americans who dont want to help the poor because theyd be helping people of another race are actually screwing over white people big time.. ...
In this article, I explore different forms of perceived threat posed by the presence of minority groups and how threat impacts residential segregation and neighborhood preferences. I extend previous research by exploring non-Hispanic white residents preferences regarding black and Latino neighbors using qualitative data from in-depth interviews with white adults conducted in multiple neighborhoods in Buffalo, New York, and Ogden, Utah. My findings suggest that white residents perceive threat differently for blacks and Latinos. ...
This isnt a zero sum game, folks. The numbers we are talking about in all situations is quite small. Certainly, the number of white women with black guys does not appreciably lower the access of the average white guy to white women, at all. I cant really comment about black womens access to black men or Asian mens access to Asian women, but it is probably not at all. What limits white mens access to white women is the pathetically low quality of those women…..making high quality white women extremely rare. Black women (and black men, lol) have this same problem which is a separate issue that, quite frankly, the black community seems to have little interest in addressing. Asian men dont have that problem and any asian man that is having trouble finding an Asian girl should probably ask himself why they are avoiding him….and fix it. Because, its not the white skin the Asian girls want. Its the way those men treat her ...

Each year ALL is found in about 3,000 U.S. children, making it the most common childhood cancer. The incidence varies by self-declared race and ethnicity with rates for Hispanic individuals 50 percent higher than for non-Hispanic white individuals. For this study, researchers used genetic variations rather than individual self-report to define ancestry. White children were defined as having greater than 95 percent European ancestry and Hispanics children as having greater than 10 percent Native American ancestry.. Although the work of St. Jude researchers and others is helping to close the survival gap, Hispanic children are still less likely than children from other racial or ethnic backgrounds to be alive five years after diagnosis.. This study builds on the earlier St. Jude research that linked different versions of the ARID5B gene to ALL risk. St. Jude and COG investigators partnered to see if variations in the ARID5B gene help to explain differences in either the incidence or the outcome of ...

Results: All allele frequencies varied significantly by race/ethnicity. A weighted genetic risk score, based on the 16 SNPs, was associated with a 0.022 mmol/L (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.009, 0.035), 0.036 mmol/L (95% CI 0.019, 0.052), and 0.033 mmol/L (95% CI 0.020, 0.046) increase in FG levels per risk allele among non-Hispanic whites, non-Hispanic blacks, and Mexican Americans, respectively. Adjusted odds ratios for IFG were 1.78 for non-Hispanic whites (95% CI 1.00, 3.17), 2.40 for non-Hispanic blacks (CI 1.07, 5.37), and 2.39 for Mexican American (95% CI 1.37, 4.14) when we compared the highest to lowest quintiles of genetic risk score (p = 0.365 for testing heterogeneity of effect across race/ethnicity). ...

In the United States, black individuals are twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared with white individuals, and these disparities are particularly pronounced in young and middle age. Prior studies have identified differences in traditional risk factors that may be associated with racial disparities in diabetes incidence but have not simultaneously adjusted for risk factors measured across multiple domains (eg, the individual and the environment) and updated over time.
