During 2005-2006, nine measles virus (MV) genotypes were identified throughout the World Health Organization European Region. All major epidemics were associated with genotypes D4, D6, and B3. Other genotypes (B2, D5, D8, D9, G2, and H1) were only found in limited numbers of cases after importation from other continents. The genetic diversity of endemic D6 strains was low; genotypes C2 and D7, circulating in Europe until recent years, were no longer identified. The transmission chains of several indigenous MV strains may thus have been interrupted by enhanced vaccination. However, multiple importations from Africa and Asia and virus introduction into highly mobile and unvaccinated communities caused a massive spread of D4 and B3 strains throughout much of the region. Thus, despite the reduction of endemic MV circulation, importation of MV from other continents caused prolonged circulation and large outbreaks after their introduction into unvaccinated and highly mobile communities ...
Downloadable! The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the competitive performance of different European countries at sector level in the intra-EU market from 1995 to 2011, comparing food industry and agricultural sector. In particular, we aim to assess the effect of the EU enlargement (first period) and the economic crisis (second period) on the competitiveness of EU countries. The data come from the Eurostat database of international trade. The competitive performance of EU countries is measured through several trade indices, such as Export and Import Market Share, Revealed Comparative Advantage, Net Export Index, and Vollrath indices, analysing their values over the last fifteen years. Our analysis showed that, in the EU countries, agriculture and food industry do not reveal strong differences in competitive performance during the last fifteen years. Among big countries, France and Spain showed a continuous worsening competitive performance. A similar trend is found for Belgium. On the contrary, the
Downloadable! This study compares the structure and determinants of inter-industry wage differentials in Eastern and Western European countries (namely Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Spain compared with Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia). To do so, we use a unique harmonised, linked employer-employee data set, the 2002 European Structure of Earnings Survey. Findings show substantial differences in earnings across sectors in all countries, even when controlling for a wide range of employee, job and employer characteristics. The hierarchy of sectors in terms of wages appears to be quite similar in Eastern and Western European countries. Among high-wage sectors, we find the energy (coke, petroleum, gas, electricity and nuclear power), chemical, financial and computer industries. In contrast, it is in the traditional sectors (wood and cork industry, textile, clothing and leather industry, hotels and restaurants, and retailing) that wages are lowest. Further
Five species of invasive Aedes mosquitoes have recently become established in Europe: Ae. albopictus, Ae. aegypti, Ae. japonicus japonicus, Ae. koreicus and Ae. atropalpus. These mosquitoes are a serious nuisance for people and are also competent vectors for several exotic pathogens such as dengue and chikungunya viruses. As they are a growing public health concern, methods to control these mosquitoes need to be implemented to reduce their biting and their potential for disease transmission. There is a crucial need to evaluate methods as part of an integrated invasive mosquito species control strategy in different European countries, taking into account local Aedes infestations and European regulations. This review presents the control methods available or in development against invasive Aedes mosquitoes, with a particular focus on those that can be implemented in Europe. These control methods are divided into five categories: environmental (source reduction), mechanical (trapping), biological ...

Cancer-related fatigue is a symptom with great implications for the quality of life of those that experience it. It is regarded as one of the most distressing symptoms that people with cancer develop. Its aetiology is complex, and although the mechanisms underlying fatigue have not been fully clarified it is evident that it is exacerbated by treatments intended to cure or palliate the disease. Patients at risk of cancer-related fatigue need access to information that will enable them to manage it effectively. There are a growing number of materials available to patients in different European countries on this topic, but it is unclear how useful patients find these. This study was undertaken to explore this through conducting focus groups with patients in the United Kingdom and Switzerland. One focus group was conducted in each country. Findings from these determined that individuals voiced common concerns: fatigue had not been addressed in the clinical setting - individuals surmised why this ...

From 1941 onwards, the majority of prisoners in Neuengamme concentration camp came from countries occupied by Germany. Between 1941 and 1942, Polish prisoners were the largest group in the camp; from 1942 and 1943 on, Soviet prisoners were the majority. In total, 90 percent of the prisoners in Neuengamme concentration camp were foreigners. More than half came from Eastern and Central Europe, but there were also large groups of prisoners from France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark. They were imprisoned because they resisted German occupation, because they were slave labourers serving punishment or because they had been abducted as hostages and victims of acts of retaliation. In 1941, Soviet POWs began arriving at Neuengamme, and in 1944 and 1945 larger groups of Jews from different European countries were sent to the camp ...
From 18-20 April, 38 participants from 11 different European countries gathered for the Natural Climate Buffer Study Tour through the north of the Netherlands to learn about five Dutch pioneering natural climate buffer projects and nature-based solutions to climate change adaptation in the Netherlands.. The event was organised by Eurosite in cooperation with Natuurmonumenten and the Dutch Natural Climate Buffer Coalition. The participants expressed great interest in finding project partners, learning from good practices and networking. The aim of the tour was to inspire and to unite forces to work together against the effects of global warming. For this purpose, the Netherlands have the ability of providing various examples of good practices considering their history with water management. The countrys below sea level location and the presence of several freshwater rivers makes about two third of the country a high-risk flooding area. To find out more about the natural climate buffers and their ...
Recent improvements in technology are leading to an improved understanding of the molecular and cellular events involved in the development of MM. However, translation of such knowledge into clinical practice requires the establishment of a multidisciplinary network as proposed. However, there is no organized structure for a translational process that ensures an integration of new biological data into clinical decision-making. In order to achieve this it is essential to initiate a programme of clinical validation and standardization of diagnostic and prognostic tests and the treatment programmes of different European countries. Implementation of potential new assays will be focused and accelerated moving rapidly from the laboratory bench to the clinic. ...

Lipari is a popular tourist spot and is the largest of the Aeolian Islands, along the north coast of Sicily. It is considered a main center of transportation and can be reached by ferry from Milazzo, which is the nearest port in Sicily.. The Aeolian islands are renowned among rich Italians, including fashion models and business tycoons, who come to this place on a vacation during the summertime. There are also many people who come from different European countries, such as Germany and Austria, to relax and enjoy amidst the calm surroundings offered by these beautiful locations.. The best time to visit Lipari is between May and September, as there is less rainfall and the temperature is mild, around 27 degrees Celsius. Winters are usually nice; rainy season begins in November and remains until March. Generally, this place experiences a Mediterranean climate and summers are dry and hot, with some respite brought about by sea breeze.. ...
In recent years, much attention has been focused on the global problem of honey bee colony losses. Among the many explanations for these losses, variability in the genetic makeup and vitality of honey bee populations might help to explain some of the variability in honey bee colony losses experienced in different regions. This has led to the innovative honey bee Genotype-Environment Interactions (GEI) experiment carried out by members of the international honey bee research association COLOSS. The results are published today in a Special Issue of the Journal of Apicultural Research.. A total of 621 colonies of 16 different genetic origins were set up in 21 apiaries in 11 different European countries managed by 15 research partners. Each location housed the local strain of bee together with two of foreign origins. The colonies were set up in the summer of 2009 and were managed and evaluated according to a standard protocol used by all participants until 2012.. IBRA Science Director Norman ...
Not only does the canister threaten to destroy Vatican City, but with the recent death of the Pope, the cardinals of the Catholic Church are all within the city for the conclave to choose the new pope. They are all about to be locked within the Sistine Chapel where, according to church law, they must remain until a new pope is chosen. They are awaiting the preferiti, the four cardinals from four different European countries who are the preferred candidates to become the new pope. While Langdon and Vittoria are trying to convince the captain of the Swiss Guard and the camerlengo, the Popes chamberlain who leads the church until the new pope is named, that the antimatter bomb is real, a phone call is received from a man who claims to be from the Illuminati. He has the four cardinals, which he will murder one by one, and then allow the bomb to destroy Vatican City, which houses not only the church hierarchy, but also its possessions and wealth. He has no demands; his only wish is the destruction ...
Validation study and pilot projects in several European countries demonstrated highest test accuracies for the detection of the 22q11 deletion syndrome. Konstanz, January 18, 2016 - PrenaTest®, Europes first NIPT, now also routinely tests for the DiGeorge syndrome, also known as 22q11 deletion syndrome. By adding this microdeletion as the most common genetic microdeletion syndrome occurring in about one out of 3,000 births, LifeCodexx now offers a non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) with one of the largest test panels available today at highest accuracy.. For validation of the examination method data from synthetic pooled DNA samples as well as from several blood samples from pregnant women, whose unborn children had a 22q11.2 microdeletion, were examined. In all cases the microdeletion was correctly detected without any false-positive or false-negative results. Starting May 2016, the results of the validation study were confirmed during pilot projects in several European countries with the aim ...
Brussels, 26 Feb 2003 ProTon Europe, a pan-European network of technology transfer offices linked to universities and public research organisations, has been launched at a kick off meeting for new members in Brussels. ProTon Europe (public research organisations transfer office network) is supported by the Commission funded Gate2Growth initiative, and aims to create a forum for the exchange of good practice in the area of technology transfer. Ernst Max Nielsen, ProTon Europes network manager, told CORDIS News that the initiative aims to add a pan-European dimension to the field of technology transfer, and to partner with existing transfer offices to develop capabilities. The exchange of best practice is the cornerstone of the programme: technology transfer is still a relatively new profession and is rapidly developing, so the sharing of experiences is vital, he said. The launch meeting in Brussels brought together the first 42 members of the network, who were selected on the basis of a call ...

N2 - Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) is a rare recessive disorder that results in several autoimmune diseases due to the mutations in the AIRE (autoimmune regulator) gene. APECED patients develop several autoimmune endocrine disorders and are characterized by the high titer autoantibodies to organ-specific antigens such as the steroidogenic P450 cytochromes. So far, 38 mutations have been identified in the AIRE gene. We report here the genetic and autoantibody analysis of 27 APECED patients of Eastern and Central European origins and one ...
Western style diets and lifestyles are associated with increasing rates of obesity, diabetes and insulin resistance. Higher circulating insulin levels may modulate cell proliferation and apoptosis either directly or indirectly by increasing the bioactivity of IGF-I and decreasing the bioactivity of some of its binding proteins. The objective of this study was to determine the association of increasing levels of serum C-peptide, a biomarker of pancreatic insulin secretion, and IGF binding proteins (IGFBP) -1 and -2 with colorectal cancer risk in a case-control study nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), a large cohort involving 10 Western European countries. A total of 1,078 colorectal cancer cases were matched (age, date of blood donation, fasting status, gender, study center) to an equal number of control subjects. Relative cancer risks were estimated using conditional logistic regression models. Serum C-peptide concentration was positively ...
Two species of arbovirus vector, Culex torrentium and Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae), occur in several European countries, but difficulties in their accurate identification and discrimination have hampered both detailed and large-scale distribution and abundance studies. Using a molecular identification method, we identified to species 2559 larvae of Cx. pipiens/torrentium collected from 138 sites in 13 European countries ranging from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean coast. In addition, samples of 1712 males of Cx. pipiens/torrentium collected at several sites in the Czech Republic were identified to species based on the morphology of their hypopygia. We found that the two species occur together in large areas of Europe, and that Cx. torrentium dominates in northern Europe and Cx. pipiens dominates south of the Alps. The transition in dominance occurs in central Europe, where both species are roughly equally common. There was a strong correlation between the length of the growing season at ...

LONDON--The specter of a fatal disease that eats away brain tissue has scared up serious new money for European scientists. The European Commission today announced a $64 million research program on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), the family of neurodegenerative diseases that includes bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)--popularly known as mad cow disease--and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans.. European research ministers had approved the program in early October, but a row ensued between commission officials and the French government over whether the money should come from current European Union research funds or from the commissions internal budget. The issue of funding, in fact, is not yet settled. The commission said today it has on hand $20 million for the program, and that the remaining $44 million must come from supplementary funds for the fourth European Framework Programme, which covers all European research spending from 1994 to 1998. The additional funds, ...
To examine the reliability of a set of health-related physical fitness tests used in the European Union-funded Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) Study on lifestyle and nutrition among adolescents. A set of physical fitness tests was performed twice in a study sample, 2 weeks apart, by the same researchers. A total of 123 adolescents (69 males and 54 females, aged 13.6±0.8 years) from 10 European cities participated in the study. Flexibility, muscular fitness, speed/agility and aerobic capacity were tested using the back-saver sit and reach, handgrip, standing broad jump, Bosco jumps (squat jump, counter movement jump and Abalakov jump), bent arm hang, 4 × 10 m shuttle run, and 20-m shuttle run tests. The ANOVA analysis showed that neither systematic bias nor sex differences were found for any of the studied tests, except for the back-saver sit and reach test, in which a borderline significant sex difference was observed (P=0.044). Adolescence represents an important period for the development of executive functions, which are a set of important cognitive processes including attentional control. However, very little is known regarding the associations of nutrition with components of executive functions in adolescence. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate associations of dietary patterns and macronutrient composition with attention capacity in European adolescents. This cross-sectional study included 384 (165 boys and 219 girls) adolescents, aged 12·5-17·5 years, from five European countries in the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence study. Attention capacity was examined using the d2 Test of Attention. Dietary intake was assessed through two non-consecutive 24 h recalls using a computer-based self-administered tool. Three dietary patterns (diet quality index, ideal diet score and Mediterranean diet score) and macronutrient/fibre intakes were calculated. Linear regression analysis was conducted
In 2009, EU-OSHA carried out the first Europe-wide establishment survey on health and safety at the workplace, the European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER). Following on from the initial analysis presented in the descriptive overview report in 2010, four secondary analysis projects have been carried out in 2011. This report focuses on drivers and barriers for psychosocial risks, examining the needs for support that European enterprises should be provided with to manage psychosocial risks effectively.
Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem caused by infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, or rarely with certain other species of Mycobacterium.1 Worldwide, TB causes more deaths than any other infectious disease and World Health Organization (WHO) TB data for 2015 indicated there were 10.4 million new cases and 1.8 million deaths.2. In Europe, the incidence of TB has decreased at an average rate of 5.0% per year since 2001, and Europe has the lower TB burden comparing to other continents.3,4 The same has happened in Portugal with a steady decrease of the incidence in the last years. However, Portugal had the highest incidence rate and prevalence among western European countries in 2015.5. Despite abundant epidemiological data, no studies, to the best of our knowledge, have yet examined the clinical, geographic, and epidemiologic burden of TB hospitalizations in Portugal and their changes over time, instead other European countries, like Spain,6 France and Italy.7 Our purpose was ...
Tuberculosis (TB) is a matter of concern for all countries in the World Health Organization European Region, although the epidemiological situation of the disease varies widely between countries. To mark World TB Day on 24 March 2007, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) will hold a scientific seminar at the European Parliament on 22 March (http://www.ecdc.eu.int/tbseminar) to increase awareness and share views and knowledge about the importance of TB control in Europe. Data from a newly published report from EuroTB (a collaborating centre of WHO for the surveillance of TB) on cases of the disease notified during 2005 will be presented.
The current study investigates whether eye color provides a marker of Agreeableness in North Europeans. Extrapolating from Frosts (2006) research uncovering an unusually diverse range of hair and eye color in northern Europe, we tested the hypothesis that light eyed individuals of North European descent would be less agreeable (a personality marker for competitiveness) when compared to their dark eyed counterparts, whereas there would be no such effect for people of European descent in general. The hypothesis was tested in Australia to provide consistent environmental conditions for both groups of people. Results support the hypothesis. Implications and conclusions are discussed.. ...

Brussels, 3 December - To mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the European Network on Independent Living - ENIL calls on Governments to stop delaying deinstitutionalisation reforms and start providing opportunities for independent living and being included in the community for all disabled people, as a matter of priority. Public funds, especially those coming from the European Union, must be used to support personal assistance, accessible housing, family support and mainstream services for all - not for the continued segregation of disabled Europeans. The COVID-19 pandemic has given us another proof why institutions of all names and sizes are not suitable for people to inhabit. A total of 83% of those who responded to the COVID-19 Disability Rights Monitor survey stated that Governments have taken no or limited measures during the pandemic to protect the lives, health and safety of disabled people living in institutions. Almost 70% of people reported they have been isolated ...

One of the Networks first and most particular actions concerns the organisation of a 7-day intensive programme of coursework taught at each member institution during one of two sessions (in November and March).. The objective of the ATHENS Programme is to give students a brief immersion in a different European pedagogical system. The Programme permits students, from different institutions to take short courses of a high scientific level. This experience, in many cases, gives students the will to undertake study of a longer duration (Master or PhD level) at an institution in a different country from their Home Institution and thus favours mobility among students of the major European technological institutions.. Each year, the programme enables about 4000 students to attend a course outside of their home institution.. Next ATHENS session: 16 - 22 March 2020. In case of question related to the ATHENS programme, students must address to the ATHENS local coordinator of their home university.. More ...
Oxford University researchers have estimated that the cost of dementia across 15 western European countries totalled £165 billion (€189 billion) in 2007.. Most of the cost was due to the care provided by families and friends, which accounted for over two-thirds of the total (68%), or £112 billion (€129 billion).. Over a quarter of the costs (26%) were down to social care, predominantly in residential and nursing homes, while costs to countries healthcare systems made up just 5% of the total burden. The remaining 1% was down to lost earnings due to illness and premature death.. Health and social care costs in the UK in 2007 were the third highest, per dementia patient, after Luxembourg and Sweden. Care for each UK dementia patient cost £13,200, after adjusting for price differentials between countries. The average across the 15 countries studied was £8,623, though it varied widely between individual nations.. The estimated total number of people with dementia (diagnosed and undiagnosed) ...
The average life expectancy of Asian-Americans (86.5 years) is 4 years higher than in Japan - the longest-lived big East Asian country. Taiwan and South Korea are at around 80; Hong Kong is at 83; Singapore is at 81. The other East Asian countries arent developed yet, so there isnt much point in comparison.. The LE of Latinos is 82.8, which is 6 years more than in Mexico, 4 years more than in the longest-lived Latin American countries and even a year higher than in Spain (one of the longest-lived European countries). This is despite the fact that obesity rates among Hispanics in the US is very high - higher than those of whites.. On average American whites can expect to live to just 78.9 - the same as in Chile or Denmark (the shortest-lived Western European country). A most curious anomaly, given their higher SES and lower obesity rates relative to Hispanics.. Blacks can expect to live around 74.2 years. This is far higher than in any African country, but the comparison is flawed for obvious ...

Of the 48 countries in the World Health Organization (WHO) African region, South Africa (SA) had the highest per capita alcohol consumption (in terms of pure litres of alcohol) by individuals aged ,15 years in 2010.[1] SA has a particularly harmful pattern of drinking. This indicator considers the manner and circumstances in which alcohol is consumed, rather than the prevalence of drinking. The quantity of alcohol consumed per occasion, festive drinking, the proportion of drinking events that end in drunkenness, the proportion of drinkers who drink daily, and the prevalence of drinking outside of mealtimes and in public places are considered in compiling the pattern-of-drinking score.[2] The WHO classifies countries patterns of drinking on a five-point scale, where 1 indicates the least risky pattern of drinking and 5 the most risky pattern.[2] According to this scale, many Western European countries score a 1. At the other extreme, the Russian Federation and Ukraine are the only two countries ...
Background In Western European countries meat represents a mainstay of the diet. However, meat can also induce severe allergic reactions. About 0.5 to 8% of all food allergies are caused by various meat sources. Besides the observation that meat allergic patients are either sensitized to white meat (e.g., chicken, turkey) or to red meat (e.g., beef, pork, lamb), there is limited knowledge on allergic reactions caused by meat and only a few meat allergens have so far been identified. Diagnosis of meat allergy is currently still based on poorly standardized extracts with unsatisfactory sensitivity and specificity.
