The plant hormone ethylene regulates fruit ripening, other developmental processes, and a subset of defense responses. Here, we show that 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid synthase (ACS)-silenced apple (Malus domestica) fruit that express a sense construct of ACS were more susceptible to Botrytis cinerea than untransformed apple, demonstrating that ethylene strengthens fruit resistance to B. cinerea infection. Because ethylene response factors (ERFs) are known to contribute to resistance against B. cinerea via the ethylene-signaling pathway, we cloned four ERF cDNAs from fruit of M. domestica: MdERF3, -4, -5, and -6. Expression of all four MdERF mRNAs was ethylene dependent and induced by wounding or by B. cinerea infection. B. cinerea infection suppressed rapid induction of wound-related MdERF expression. MdERF3 was the only mRNA induced by wounding and B. cinerea infection in ACS-suppressed apple fruit, although its induction was reduced compared with wild-type apple. Promoter regions of ...

Characterization and Expression of Genes Involved in the Ethylene Biosynthesis and Signal Transduction during Ripening of Mulberry Fruit. PubMed Central. Liu, Changying; Zhao, Aichun; Zhu, Panpan; Li, Jun; Han, Leng; Wang, Xiling; Fan, Wei; Lü, Ruihua; Wang, Chuanhong; Li, Zhengang; Lu, Cheng; Yu, Maode. 2015-01-01. Although ethylene is well known as an essential regulator of fruit development, little work has examined the role ethylene plays in the development and maturation of mulberry (Morus L.) fruit. To study the mechanism of ethylene action during fruit development in this species, we measured the ethylene production, fruit firmness, and soluble solids content (SSC) during fruit development and harvest. By comparing the results with those from other climacteric fruit, we concluded that Morus fruit are probably climacteric. Genes associated with the ethylene signal transduction pathway of Morus were characterized from M. notabilis Genome Database, including four ethylene receptor genes, a ...
The exact role of ethylene in xylogenesis remains unclear, but the Zinnia elegans cell culture system provides an excellent model with which to study its role during the differentiation of tracheary elements (TEs) in vitro. • Here, we analysed ethylene homeostasis and function during Z. elegans TE differentiation using biochemical, molecular and pharmacological methods. • Ethylene evolution was confined to specific stages of TE differentiation. It was found to peak at the time of TE maturation and to correlate with the activity of the ethylene biosynthetic 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) oxidase. The ethylene precursor ACC was exported and accumulated to high concentrations in the extracellular medium, which also displayed a high capacity to convert ACC into ethylene. The effects of adding inhibitors of the ethylene biosynthetic ACC synthase and ACC oxidase enzymes to the TE cultures demonstrated for the first time strict dependence of TE differentiation on ethylene biosynthesis ...
In plants, undifferentiated meristem tissue provides stem cells to produce roots and shoots. The root meristem contains a few of these stem cells in a region called the quiescent center. Ortega-Martínez et al. studied Arabidopsis plants with a defect in a gene that controls ethylene biosynthesis and found that it produced more of the gaseous hormone ethylene. The quiescent center cells in these mutants went through more cell divisions than normal, resulting in extra stem cells in the root meristem. Adding exogenous ethylene also increased quiescent cell division, and blocking its synthesis in the mutants prevented extra divisions.. O. Ortega-Martínez, M. Pernas, R. J. Carol, L. Method: (1) Preparation of ethene:. Pour some ethanol into the boiling tube to a 2-3 cm depth. Add some glass wool to soak up the ethanol, using a glass rod to push the wool down the tube.. Clamp the boiling tube in a horizontal position using a retort stand.. Put a small amount of aluminium oxide about half way along the boiling tube.. Complete the set up of the apparatus as shown in the diagram above.. Light the Bunsen burner, adjust it to a blue flame and heat the aluminium oxide. (Make sure the test tube is filled with water when you start to collect the gas produced.). As the aluminium oxide gets hot the heat reaches the ethanol at the end of the tube. The ethanol then changes to vapour, passes over the hot aluminium oxide and is dehydrated to produce ethene gas.. Let the bubbles produced escape for a short time (these are mainly bubbles of displaced air). Collect 5 test tubes of the gas and put a stopper on each tube when it is filled.. When the test tubes have all been filled, loosen the ...
Chlorinated ethylenes are among the most common and pervasive groundwater contaminants in the United States. The chlorinated ethylenes are produced in large quantities and they are widely used in industry including food packaging, synthetic fibers, and industrial solvents. Because chlorinated ethylenes are barely soluble in water, they can accumulate in groundwater and emerge in water supplies, posing serious carcinogenic and neurological risks to human health.. A potential solution to remove the chlorinated ethylenes is in situ, or on site, bioremediation (ISB). ISB is an appealing technology that encourages natural bacteria to grow and produce to remove harmful organic elements, such as chlorinated ethylenes, through the process of biological degradation. ISB occurs when the oil-based chlorinated ethylenes and water come into contact and the biodegrading bacteria are attached to the oil-water interface, absorbing and digesting the harmful oils. The ISB process becomes very effective if the ...

Most endophytic bacteria in consortia, which provide robust and broad metabolic capacity, are attractive for applications in plant metabolic engineering. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of engineered endophytic bacterial strains on rice sprout ethylene level and growth under saline stress. A protocol was developed to synthesize engineered strains by expressing bacterial 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase gene on cells of endophytic Enterobacter sp. E5 and Kosakonia sp. S1 (denoted as E5P and S1P, respectively). Results showed that ACC deaminase activities of the engineered strains E5P and S1P were significantly higher than those of the wild strains E5 and S1. About 32-41% deaminase was expressed on the surface of the engineered strains. Compared with the controls without inoculation, inoculation with the wild and engineered strains increased the deaminase activities of sprouts. Inoculation with the engineered strains increased 15-21% more deaminase activities of

The ability of the AtERFs to regulate transcription in plant cells was tested by using transient assays (Figure 5). A luciferase (LUC)-encoding reporter gene, 4×HLS, which contains four copies of the GCC box sequence from the Arabidopsis HOOKLESS1 (HLS1) promoter (Lehman et al., 1996) fused to LUC, and an effector plasmid consisting of each AtERF under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter (Figure 5A) were delivered to Arabidopsis leaves by particle bombardment. LUC activity increased at least 12-fold when the reporter plasmid was coexpressed with AtERF1, AtERF2, or AtERF5 effector plasmids (Figure 5B). No such increase in LUC activity by the AtERFs was detected when a LUC reporter plasmid containing a mutated GCC box (ATCCTCC) was used (data not shown). These data indicate that AtERF1, AtERF2, and AtERF5 are able to function as GCC box sequence-specific transactivators in Arabidopsis leaves.. Some genes containing the GCC box in their promoter region are known to be ...

When you also, leave fruits closed in a bag, the Ethylene production is high. Hence, you get ripened fruits faster. Knowing the need for Ethylene, fruit vendors/producers have started producing Ethylene to their produce in order to escalate its process.. The development stage of the fruit is when photosynthate is converted to starch and ripening stage is when starch is converted to sugar. For example, If bananas from Mexico are being shipped to California then they are plucked at the Development stage and Ethylene is produced to escalate the process to reach to the ripening stage for commercial reasons. Fruits are digestible only when they are ripened and are easily absorbed , and the nutrient content is high. At the same time, too much Ethylene production could also lead to ruining the enzymes and could lead to destruction of the produce.. Technology has improved so much that Ethylene production can be alternated, hence controlling the ripening process of the fruit. Now the big question? Does ...

AbstractIn the ethylene glycol generation unit of petrochemical plants, first a reaction of ethylene oxide takes place which is then followed by other side reactions. These reactions include water absorption with ethylene oxide, which leads to the generation of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. Over the lifetime of the alpha-alumina-based silver catalyst there is an increase in side reactions, increasing the amount of the formaldehyde and acetaldehyde generated by the ethylene oxide reactor which leads to reduced MEG product purity. Given the need of a petrochemical complex to further strip the aldehyde (formaldehyde and acetaldehyde) to increase the quality of the MEG and increase the lifetime of the alpha-alumina-based silver catalyst, resin beds are designed and their surface absorption capacity is investigated to optimize aldehyde (formaldehyde and acetaldehyde) removal in the recirculating water flow of the ethylene oxide unit. Experiments show that the ion exchange system based on strong anionic

Changes in the patterns of ethylene production, chlorophyll content, and respiration were studied in relation to the senescence of intact leaves and leaf discs. The primary leaves of pinto bean, which abscise readily during natural senescence, and tobacco and sugar beet leaves, which do not abscise, were used. A decrease in the rate of ethylene production and respiration, during the slow phase of chlorophyll degradation, was observed in leaf-blade discs cut from mature leaves and aged in the dark. During rapid chlorophyll loss both ethylene production and respiration increased and then decreased. These climacteric-like patterns were shown by leaf discs of all three species. Discs taken from leaves that had been senescing on the plant also showed a climacteric-like rise in ethylene production but not in respiration, which decreased continuously with leaf age. Climacteric-like patterns in the rise of ethylene and respiration for leaf discs were also shown by the petioles of both bean and tobacco ...
The capture of light energy by PSI and PSII is necessary to accommodate electron transport and the reduction of CO2 (the so-called dark reactions of photosynthesis) in plant chloroplasts. Wullschleger et al. (1992) reexamined the light-response and CO2-response curves of soybean (Glycine max) reported by Taylor and Gunderson (1988) and found a 30% decline in the electron transport capacity following a 4-h exposure to ethylene. In line with these results, transient overexpression of a specific ethylene-responsive factor (CitERF13) in tobacco leaves compromised photosynthetic rates. Significant declines of the maximum quantum efficiency as well as the effective quantum efficiency of both PSI and PSII occurred 3 and 2 d, respectively, after infiltration with Agrobacterium tumefaciens carrying CitERF13 (Xie et al., 2017). In addition, pulse-amplitude modulation fluorimetry-based chlorophyll fluorescence analyses by Kim et al. (2017) reveal that ethylene-insensitive mutants of Arabidopsis (etr1-1) ...
There is evidence that abscisic acid (ABA) and ethylene both play important roles in the physiological processes of grape maturation. However, the interaction between ABA and ethylene metabolism in grape maturation is unclear. We applied 50 μM (±) abscinazole-E3 (Abz, ABA 8-hydroxylase inhibitor) or 500 μM ethephon to grape berries at 44 DAFB (days after full bloom). Grape berries were sampled at 44, 48, 54, 64, 94 DAFB. The ABA, ethylene concentrations and related gene expressions were analyzed. The results showed that Abz or ethephon treatment decreased the firmness and titratable acid concentration. Abz treatment inhibited VvCYP707A1 gene expression levels at 48 DAFB and increased endogenous ABA accumulation at 54 DAFB. Ethephon treatment significantly up-regulated VvNCED1 gene expression levels at 48 DAFB and VvCYP707A1 at 54 DAFB, but had no effect on ABA concentration. Ethylene and gene expression levels of VvACO1 and VvERF2 in Abz- and ethephon-treated berries at 48 DAFB were ...
A solution to avoid unsafe storage of ethylene cylinders Ethylene is the simplest unsaturated hydrocarbon and one of the chemical most used worldwide. Like all hydrocarbons, it is asphyxiating and flammable. Whatever the final employment, ethylene is distributed, stored and consumed in airtight systems always at high pressure. The fact that ethylene is asphyxiating, extremely flammable and explosive at 27.000 ppm renders the usage of ethylene quite dangerous. (Sigma-Aldrich MSDS sheet) (R A Strehlow, INT SYMP ON COMB, 14(1):1189-1200, 1973) Ethylene handling requires many precautions: the employees of every manufacturing facility must attend an advanced training program, unnecessary ethylene exposure must be limited and safety equipment have to be present in every facility for this reason. Because of ethylene asphyxiating characteristic, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists adopted a Threshold Limit Value of 200 ppm for ethylene as an 8-hour time-weighted average. ...
Erie, Pennsylvania 16501. Dear Mr. Rohleder:. This is in response to your inquiry of September 6, regarding procedures for ethylene oxide (EtO) spills and ethylene oxide disposal.. All spills should be immediately cleaned up with non-combustible adsorbent material that is readily available on the market. OSHA does not specify any one type of spill cleaning and adsorbing material or equipment; however, water should be used to wash down spill areas.. Since EtO is a gas at room temperature, you are dealing with the gaseous form of EtO predominantly in your work air that will not produce a spill. For example, when EtO leaks from a high pressure vessel, the EtO would be in a liquid form for only a short period of time as it leaks into the air. It then quickly equilibrates with the room air to form a gas. Both the gaseous and, when necessary, the liquid phase of EtO exposure must be taken into consideration.. See enclosed excerpts from appendices of 29 CFR 1910.1047 (Ethylene Oxide) which includes ...

When a single dose of 2 mg labelled ethylene oxide in propanediol/kg body weight was applied intraperitoneally to rats, 43% of the administered radioactivity was excreted in the urine within 50 h (41% within 24 h) of exposure, 9% as S-(2- hydroxyethyl)cysteine and 33% as N-acetyl- S-(2-hydroxyethyl) cysteine, both products of glutathione conjugation. Via the lungs, 1.5% was excreted as carbon dioxide and 1% as unmetabolized ethylene oxide (Jones & Wells, 1981). The involvement of glutathione-epoxide- S-transferase (EC 4.4.1.7) has not been investigated further. In vitro glutathione conjugation of the homologue propylene oxide was shown to proceed only in the presence of an enzyme (Fjellstedt et al., 1973). In rabbits, no effect was found on liver- and blood-glutathione levels, after 12 weeks of exposure to concentrations of ethylene oxide at 18, 90, or 450 mg/m3, for 5 days per week, 6 h per day (Yager & Benz, 1982). As ethylene oxide can react with chloride ions, and this reaction is acid ...
BD Bard came under fire last summer, when a report was released correlating elevated cancer rates in the Covington area with the companys use of ethylene oxide, a gas that made the environmantal Protection Agencys list of gases that definitely cause cancer. In January, BD Bard was was ordered to pay the cities of Madison and Covington $65,000 each due to the companys previous violations in the production of ethylene oxide. Madison is home to one of the seven industrial plants in Georgia that use ethylene oxide. The spotlight fell on Madisons BD Bard plant after its sister plant in Covington was forced to shut down by the state when local officials detected elevated ethylene oxide emissions in the air-as high as 5,600 pounds a year. According to a court ruling in the case between BD Bard and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GEPD), BD Bard is mandated To mitigate the impact of these issues, BD Bard shall provide a grant of $65,000 to the city of Covington, Ga., and a grant of ...

As food crop, wheat is of prime importance for human society. Nevertheless, our understanding of the genetic and molecular mechanisms controlling wheat productivity conditions has been, so far, hampered by the lack of sufficient genomic resources. The present work describes the isolation and characterization of TdERF1, an ERF gene from durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum). The structural features of TdERF1 supported the hypothesis that it is a novel member of the ERF family in durum wheat and, considering its close similarity to TaERF1 of Triticum aestivum, it probably plays a similar role in mediating responses to environmental stresses. TdERF1 displayed an expression pattern that discriminated between two durum wheat genotypes contrasted with regard to salt-stress tolerance. The high number of cis-regulatory elements related to stress responses present in the TdERF1 promoter and the ability of TdERF1 to regulate the transcription of ethylene and drought-responsive promoters clearly ...
The process of the present invention may be used to prepare homopolymers of ethylene and copolymers of ethylene and higher alpha olefins having densities in the range of, for example, about 0.900-0.970 g/cm3 and especially 0.910-0.965 g/cm3; the polymers of higher density e.g. about 0.960 and above being homopolymers. Such polymers may have a melt index, as measured by the method of ASTM D-1238, condition E, in the range of for example, 0.1-200 dg/min, typically from about 0.1 to 150 dg/min., and especially in the range of about 0.1 to 120 dg/min. The polymers may be manufactured with narrow or broad molecular weight distribution. For example, the polymers may have a stress exponent, a measure of the molecular weight distribution, in the range of about 1.1-2.5 and especially in the range of about 1.3-2.0. Stress exponent is determined by measuring the throughput of a melt indexer at two stresses (2160 g and 6480 g loading) using the procedures of the ASTM melt index test method, and the ...

Plants respond to physical injury, such as that caused by foraging insects, by synthesizing proteins that function in general defense and tissue repair. In tomato plants, one class of wound-responsive genes encodes proteinase inhibitor (pin) proteins shown to block insect feeding. Application of many different factors will induce or inhibit pin gene expression. Ethylene is required in the transduction pathway leading from injury, and ethylene and jasmonates act together to regulate pin gene expression during the wound response.. ...

Ethylene is a major stimulating factor for natural rubber production in Hevea brasiliensis and is often applied in the form of Ethephon, an ethylene releaser. In a positive feedback type mechanism, the application of ethylene leads to the enhanced expression of genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis such as ACC oxidases, which are also responsive to wounding. We studied the regulation of ethylene biosynthesis in rubber trees through the characterisation of the ACC oxidase multigene family and the responses of individual genes to ethylene and wounding. Three full-length cDNAs, HbACO1, HbACO2 and HbACO3, were isolated. The HbACOs were 1115, 1174 and 1074 bp long, respectively, with open reading frames encoding polypeptides of 312, 318 and 318 amino acids, respectively. The genomic sequences of HbACO1 and HbACO2 were also characterised, revealing divergent gene structures: HbACO1 (1456 bp) possesses three introns and four exons, while HbACO2 (1418 bp) consists of two introns and three exons. Minor uses of ethylene glycol include the manufacture of capacitors, as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of 1,4-dioxane, as an additive to prevent corrosion in liquid cooling systems for personal computers, and inside the lens devices of cathode-ray tube type of rear projection televisions. Ethylene glycol is also used in the manufacture of some vaccines, but it is not itself present in these injections. It is used as a minor (1-2%) ingredient in shoe polish and also in some inks and dyes. Ethylene glycol has seen some use as a rot and fungal treatment for wood, both as a preventative and a treatment after the fact. It has been used in a few cases to treat partially rotted wooden objects to be displayed in museums. It is one of only a few treatments that are successful in dealing with rot in wooden boats, and is relatively cheap. Ethylene glycol may also be one of the minor ingredients in screen cleaning solutions, along with the main ingredient isopropyl alcohol. Ethylene glycol is ...

The active site and substrate-binding mode of MD-ACO1 (Malus domestica Borkh. 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate oxidase) have been determined using site-directed mutagenesis and comparative modelling methods. The MD-ACO1 protein folds into a compact jelly-roll motif comprised of eight α-helices, 12 β-strands and several long loops. The active site is well defined as a wide cleft near the C-terminus. The co-substrate ascorbate is located in cofactor Fe2+-binding pocket, the so-called 2-His-1-carboxylate facial triad. In addition, our results reveal that Arg244 and Ser246 are involved in generating the reaction product during enzyme catalysis. The structure agrees well with the biochemical and site-directed mutagenesis results. The three-dimensional structure together with the steady-state kinetics of both the wild-type and mutant MD-ACO1 proteins reveal how the substrate specificity of MD-ACO1 is involved in the catalytic mechanism, providing insights into understanding the fruit ripening ...

Fruit development, maturation and ripening consists of a complex series of biochemical and physiological changes that in climacteric fruits, including apple and tomato, are coordinated by the gaseous hormone ethylene. These changes lead to final fruit quality and understanding of the functional machinery underlying these processes is of both biological and practical importance. To date many reports have been made on the analysis of gene expression in apple. In this study we focused our investigation on the role of ethylene during apple maturation, specifically comparing transcriptomics of normal ripening with changes resulting from application of the hormone receptor competitor 1-Methylcyclopropene. To gain insight into the molecular process regulating ripening in apple, and to compare to tomato (model species for ripening studies), we utilized both homologous and heterologous (tomato) microarray to profile transcriptome dynamics of genes involved in fruit development and ripening, emphasizing ...
EPA is addressing ethylene oxide based on the results of the latest National Air Toxics Assessment (NATA), which identified the chemical as a potential concern in several areas across the country. NATA is the Agencys nationwide air toxics screening tool, designed to help EPA and state, local and tribal air agencies identify areas, pollutants or types of sources for further examination.. The 2014 NATA uses emissions data from the latest National Emissions Inventory (2014 is the most recent data available), along with the latest scientific information on air toxics and health, to estimate long-term air toxics exposures and potential public health risk in census tracts across the United States.. NATA estimates long-term risks - those that may occur from breathing air containing elevated levels of air toxics continuously for many decades. It does not estimate short-term (acute) or intermediate risks. However, based on an examination of available data, EPA does not expect ethylene oxide levels in ...

by Susanne Retka Schill (Ethanol Producer Magazine) Knock a water molecule off ethanol and youll get ethylene, C2H4-the most widely produced organic chemical globally that is the basis for scores of other chemicals and hundreds (maybe thousands) of products, from antifreeze and surfactants to synthetic fibers, plastics and packaging. Global ethylene production in 2016 was greater than 150 million metric tons, with more than half going to produce polyethylene.. The biggest problem for ethanol producers is that virtually all of that ethylene currently is produced from either crude oil-based naptha or natural gas-based ethane, with shale gas promising to be the lowest-cost feedstock for years to come in the U.S.. But fossil sources are losing favor among those looking to reduce carbon footprints. And that represents a big opportunity for ethanol producers.. At 2 percent, the market share for biobased polymers is still quite small, with 7.5 million metric tons produced in 2018, according to the ...

Climacteric C2H4 biosynthesis includes (1) conversion of Asp to Met, (2) conversion of Met to C2H4, and (3) the Met recycling pathway (Yang and Hoffman, 1984). Conversion of Met to C2H4 is, at least in part, governed via transcriptional regulation of SAM, ACS, and ACO gene family members; however, these genes are regulated by different mechanisms. SAM1 transcripts accumulate preferentially in tomato pericarp during fruit maturation, while ACS2, ACS4, and ACO1 transcripts accumulate concomitantly with C2H4 biosynthesis and pericarp ripening. Based on the expression data presented here, it is apparent that transcriptional regulation may govern other stages of the C2H4 biosynthetic pathway as well. For example, TS expression decreases throughout pericarp development, while CGS expression increases during the transition from a mature green fruit to a ripening fruit in an Nr-dependent manner. These transcriptional changes could influence TS and CGS and shift carbon flux from the Thr pathway to the ...

Large amounts of ethylene oxide are produced in the United States. Most of it is used to make other chemicals such as ethylene glycol, but smaller amounts are used as a pesticide or to sterilize medical equipment. Exposure to ethylene oxide can cause irritation of the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs, and damage to the brain and nerves. It has been found at 3 of the 1,177 National Priorities List sites identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The authors test the responses of plants with changed levels of ERF74, showing that they have altered responses to a range of stresses such as drought, light, heat and aluminum. erf74 mutants lack a typical reactive oxidative stress (ROS) burst due to low expression of the RESPIRATORY BURST OXIDASE HOMOLOG D (RbohD) protein. ERF74 directly interacts with the RbohD promotor and the paper shows that the whole ...
Adventitious root (AR) formation in the stem base of cuttings is the basis for propagation of many plant species and petunia is used as model to study this developmental process. Following AR formation from 2 to 192 hours after excision (hpe) of cuttings, transcriptome analysis by microarray revealed a change of the character of the rooting zone from stem base to root identity. The greatest shift in the number of differentially expressed genes was observed between 24 and 72 hpe, when the categories storage, mineral nutrient acquisition, anti-oxidative and secondary metabolism, and biotic stimuli showed a notable high number of induced genes. Analyses of phytohormone-related genes disclosed multifaceted changes of the auxin transport system, auxin conjugation and the auxin signal perception machinery indicating a reduction in auxin sensitivity and phase-specific responses of particular auxin-regulated genes. Genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis and action showed a more uniform pattern as a high number

The drag reducing effect of poly(ethylene oxide) additives on blunt bodies in water was investigated by examining the behavior of a sphere in both subcritical and supercritical Reynolds number regions. Drop tests were conducted in water and in concentrations of poly(ethylene oxide) WSR 301 ranging in concentration from 50 wppm to 1000 wppm. Reduction in drag was noted for all concentrations in the Reynolds number range of 40,000 to 350,000. A critical Reynolds number of 450,000 was observed for dilute solutions (50 and 100 wppm), while more concentrated solutions exhibited a uniformly decreasing drag. These results are explained by examining the interaction of profile and friction drag, together with the effects of polymer additives upon wake diameter size. (Author)(*UNDERWATER VEHICLES

The ground-state rotational spectra of the dimethyl sulfide-dimethyl ether (DMS-DME) and the ethylene oxide and ethylene sulfide (EO-ES) complexes were observed by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy, and $a$-type and $c$-type transitions were assigned for the normal, $^{34}$S, and three $^{13}$C species of the DMS-DME and $a$-type and $b$-type rotational transitions for the normal, $^{34}$S, and two $^{13}$C species of the EO-ES. The observed transitions were analyzed by using an $S$-reduced asymmetric-top rotational Hamiltonian. The rotational parameters thus derived for the DMS-DME were found consistent with a structure of $C_{rm{s}}$ rm{symmetry with the DMS bound to the DME by two C-H(DMS)---O and one S---H-C(DME) hydrogen bonds. Polyethylene (abbreviated PE) or polythene (IUPAC name polyethene or poly(ethylene) ) is the most common plastic. As the name implies, it is chemically synthesized from molecules that contain long chains of ethylene, a monomer that provides the ability to double bond with other carbon-based monomers to form polymers. The annual production of approximately 80 million metric tons. Its primary use is within packaging (plastic bag, plastic films, geomembranes, etc.). Many kinds of polyethylene are known, but they almost always have the chemical formula (C2H2)nH2.. Most people may have heard and seen the two most common forms of this polymer: Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Since its properties of the former contain a greater degree of long chain branching, the matrix is less dense and doesnt offer as much tensile strength as the latter. Since this is the case, LDPE is less expensive to produce and process than similar polymers.. HDPE, on the other hand, is a ...

State lawmakers are debating two bills, one that would ban the use of ethylene oxide in densely populated areas or near schools, and another that would give home rule to communities.
It would require companies to do a better job of controlling their chemical emissions, reducing the cancer risks faced by people who live around manufacturing plants from an estimated 2,000 cases to 200 to 300 cases of cancer for every million people exposed over a lifetime.. The EPA deems cancer risks from air pollution unacceptable when they exceed 100 cases for every million people.. Its important that EPA is finally admitting that communities are facing this blatantly unacceptable level of cancer risk, said Emma Cheuse, an attorney for Earthjustice, a nonprofit law firm that represents clients in environmental lawsuits free of charge.. But Cheuse said the new rules arent adequate.. Its unbelievable that EPA is proposing to leave certain communities exposed to a level of cancer risk that is 2 to 3 times the level the EPA deems presumptively unacceptable, she said.. While the new rule deals with more than one chemical, some of its most anticipated impacts relate to ethylene ...
