Recent activities of the Council of the British Medical Association related to ethical and public policy issues are described. The Council has been working to improve the network of local research ethics committees and favors the establishment of a national committee to review research proposals. It has been engaged in efforts to shape the Data Protection Act to safeguard the confidentiality of personal health records and to protect the confidentiality of minors who seek contraceptive advice without their parents knowledge. Other Council concerns include advertising by the medical profession and the physicians role in law enforcement in Great Britain and in investigations of torture on the international scene. Tapes were tested at the University of Sheffield Department of Engineering, under standard conditions of constant temperature and humidity. The normal range of force required in clinical practice was calculated using Newton meters attached to a tape wrapped around a volunteers head. Varying continuous tensile forces were then applied to four new and six old Lasso-o tapes from clinics and wards, to simulate multiple strain-relax forces. Their change in lengths were measured against a calibrated steel rule and compared by paired one tailed t tests.. Ethical approval was obtained from South Sheffield Local Research Ethics Committee.. Using new Lasso-o tapes the head circumferences of 79 outpatients aged 3 weeks to 16 years were measured by three observers, blinded to each others results, to assess inter-observer differences. One observer made repeated measurements to assess intra-observer reliability. The differences between readings, and their correlation and agreement were analysed using the ...
Patients and isolates. A total of 65 cryptococcal isolates were assayed from a cohort of more than 300 clinically characterized HIV-associated CM patients from five completed clinical trials in Thailand and South Africa (4, 22-25). Participants provided written informed consent, and all trials were approved by the local research ethics committees as well as the ethics committee of Wandsworth (London, United Kingdom). Isolates for this study were selected to reflect the range of clinical trials, geographic locations, and isolate genotypes of serotype A C. neoformans var. grubii. Genotypes were determined using multilocus sequence typing (MLST) according to the ISHAM (International Society for Human and Animal Mycology) consensus typing scheme (40). All isolates included were from patients who were ART naive at enrollment and treated for a first episode of CM with amphotericin B-based therapies (sometimes in combination with fluconazole, flucytosine, or adjuvant IFN-γ). Patient baseline ...
Most studies relating blood pressure (BP) to target organ damage measure BP at the brachial artery, but pulse pressure (PP) and systolic BP (SBP) in the aorta are lower than the corresponding peripheral measures. In adults, aortic (central) PP and SBP have been shown to be more closely related to target organ damage and cardiovascular events (1) than peripheral pressures. We compared central and peripheral PP and their associations with concurrent measures of cardiac structure and function in a large, population-based cohort of adolescents.. The ALSPAC (Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children) study, a prospective population-based birth cohort study, evaluated 1,695 participants (45% male; mean age 17.7 years) who underwent echocardiography examinations. Exclusion criteria included pregnancy and congenital heart disease. The ALSPAC Law and Ethics Committee and the Local Research Ethics Committee provided ethical approved. Participants provided written informed consent. Sitting peripheral ...
Human bladder cancer specimens. Tumor samples from 109 patients of primary UCC were collected at cystectomy or transurethral resection, and snap frozen in liquid nitrogen. Use of tissues for this study was approved by Cambridgeshire Local Research Ethics Committee (Ref 03/018). A total of 30 sections of 30 μm of fresh frozen tissue were homogenized for DNA and RNA extraction. Sandwich H&E sections were prepared for cellularity and grade assessment by a reference urohistopathologist (A.W.). Tumors were staged and graded according to the American Joint Committee on Cancer and WHO/International Society of Urologic Pathology classifications (34, 35). Samples showing tumor cellularity of ,70% and significant inflammatory cell contamination were excluded.. Tissue microarray. For our custom-made tissue microarray (TMA), an independent cohort of 123 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples of primary UCC was obtained from the pathology archives of Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge University ...
A postal questionnaire asked whether or not respondents would take drugs if one life would be saved for every 12, 33, 50, 100, or 250 people treated for five years. This gave six thresholds of numbers needed to treat (,12 to 250).. A pilot study showed that a sample size of 28 in each group would have 80% power to detect a probability of 0.284 that the number needed to treat for nurses is lower than for general practitioners, using a Wilcoxon (Mann-Whitney) rank sum test for ordered categories with two sided significance of 0.05. To allow for low response rates, all 39 consultant physicians at the city hospitals were recruited. Altogether 39 practice nurses, 39 general practitioners, and 100 adult members of the public were selected from the lists of the local health authority, with systematic sampling from a random starting point. A lower response rate was expected from the public. The local research ethics committee approved the study.. The response rate was 69% (149/217). The threshold for ...
Methods This study was approved by the Local Research Ethics Committee of Sakarya University. This study was observational and comparative. The research took place at the Delivery Hospital in Sakarya. The samples were volunteer participant mothers who delivered healthy neonates. 24 cesarean deliveries under general anesthesia and 56 vaginal deliveries were chosen for the study. Data were obtained using the Introductory Information Form which was prepared using related literature and the LATCH Breastfeeding Assessment System. Every month mothers were called by phone in order to clarify whether they fed their babies with breastfeeding or formula after delivery. SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) was utilized in the analysis of data. Percentage, average, standard deviation and independent samples t test were used for statistical analysis. ...
This retrospective study was approved by the local research ethics committee and clinical audit office. This study included 123 patients with newly diagnosed cerebral glioma, of all grades. Histological diagnosis was used as the standard reference for all potential patients. The relative tumour blood volume (rTBVmax) derived from MR perfusion was used for radiological grading of cerebral glioma. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) were used to define the best threshold value in distinguishing the glioma grades and in determining the accuracy values (sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values). For survival analysis, Kaplan-Meier was used to illustrate and compare the discriminatory value of the histological and radiological classifications. A multiple Cox regression model was used to assess the prognostic value of both classifications in addition to other tested demographic and clinical variables. Finally, the influence of potential moderators was assessed using ...

The Medical Sciences IDREC (MS IDREC) utilise a number of CUREC Approved Procedures, which are essentially documents approved by CUREC for how to approach certain types of study or intervention. The main function of such Procedures is to reduce the need for researchers to apply for ethical review using a full CUREC 2 application form. By agreeing to conduct research within the scope of a CUREC-approved procedure, researchers may apply for ethical review and approval using the process for lower-risk research. The Central University Research Ethics Committee (CUREC) has recently approved revisions to several Approved Procedures (see https://researchsupport.admin.ox.ac.uk/governance/ethics/resources/ap). If you are a researcher who utilises any of the above CUREC Approved Procedures as part of an ethically-approved project, it is important that you read the new document to ensure you can still meet with requirements. In particular, your attention is drawn to the following changes: Approved ...

The graduate program to which I am applying has a centralized admission procedure, so individual professors cannot accept students. However, they recommend taking a look at the faculty, so that our research proposals are aligned with the work being done there. (Un)fortunately, the field Id like to work in is quite unexplored, which might help me - but also makes it hard to find professors with a similar interest.. While browsing the faculty Web site, I found the professor whose research aligns most with my intended research proposal and whose page explicitly encouraged potential students to get in touch, so I emailed her to ask if (1) she thought our interests would be compatible and/or (2) she thought that someone else in the department could be interested in following me. It was a thoughtful email, a brief introduction and references to her previous work. Its been a week and she hasnt replied yet - and with professors Ive learned that if they dont reply within a day, they probably missed ...

Committees can be categorized as either permanent or temporary-sometimes designated as standing or special. Committees generally do not transact business, but simply prepare it and present it, usually with recommendations, to the full meeting of the organization for final action. However, many special committees are task, rather than report, oriented.. Permanent committees are either elected or are appointed by the President, as provided for in the Chapter By-laws. They deal with matters that pertain to the continuing operation of the organization. Temporary committees are appointed by the President and deal with matters of a special or non-recurring nature, and when they make their report or complete their task, they are automatically dissolved. Temporary committees must always report their findings and recommendations to the full meeting. A permanent committee may take a matter under advisement and dispose of it by killing it in committee, that is, letting it die by not reporting it to ...

They said Dr. He Jiankui coordinated funding for the experiment without outside assistance in violation of national guidelines, state news agency Xinhua said, the Associated Press reported. He also edited the genes of another embryo yet to be born. That baby and the two twins will be kept under medical observation through regular visits overseen by health officials, according to Xinhua. The news agency didnt specify which laws He may have broken, but said he faked an ethical review by others, the AP reported.
