The Orthodox Church of Estonia (Estonian: Eesti Őigeusu Kirik, Russian: Эстонская Православная Церковь) is a semi-autonomous part of the Russian Orthodox Church with jurisdiction in Estonia. Its current primate is Cornelius (Yacobs), with the title of Metropolitan of Tallinn and all Estonia. The Estonian Orthodox Church should not be confused with the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church, an autonomous part of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Estonia. The Russian Orthodox Church does not recognize the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church, and its establishment in 1996 led to rupture of communion between the Moscow and Constantinople Patriarchates. Though communion was restored, relations between the two Patriarchates remain tense over the Estonian issue. In particular, the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church ruled in 2000 that the Moscow Patriarchate will not participate in any pan-Orthodox gathering were delegates from the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church ...

As described in the landscape section of this document, Estonia follows a decentralised ownership model, where nine ministries currently exercise ownership rights over 36 SOEs. Of the 36 SOEs, 30 are fully controlled by the state, while six have nongovernment shareholders, with non state ownership ranging from 11 per cent to 84 percent.. Guideline III.A: The co-ordinating or ownership entity and SOEs should ensure that all shareholders are treated equitably. The Commercial Code applies to all shareholders regardless of the ownership structure. This piece of legislation protects minority shareholders in SOEs, and privately owned companies, as well as listed companies. There are no additional legal safeguards for minority shareholders in SOEs. There was however, one exception in the SOE sector which did affect minority shareholders rights, where different classes of shares were not treated equally. In State-owned companies, the State had sole right to receive the minutes of supervisory board ...

Obesity has increased since the early 1980s, and despite numerous attempts, effective strategies to counter this worldwide epidemic are lacking. Food preferences are established early in life and are difficult to change later. There is therefore a need to identify factors that influence the development of food preferences. Our aim was therefore, to investigate cross-sectional and prospective associations between TV viewing habits and food preferences and habits, respectively. We hypothesized that more TV viewing was associated with less healthy concomitant and future food preferences and food habits. Data are from the Danish part of European Youth Heart Study (EYHS) I and II, a prospective cohort study conducted among 8-10-year-old and 14-16-year-old Danes in 1997-98. Six years later 2003-04 the 8-10-year-olds were followed up at age 14-16 years, and a new group of 8-10-year olds were included. Data were analysed using mixed linear regression analysis. Cross-sectional analyses included 697 8-10-year

NEW YORK - August 22, 2016) - In a study published today in Science, researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in collaboration with scientists from Tartu University Hospital in Estonia, Karolinska Institutet and Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) in Sweden and AstraZeneca have identified a profound new level of complexity and interaction among genes within specific tissues responsible for mediating the inherited risk for cardiometabolic diseases including processes that lead to heart attack and stroke.. By analyzing gene-expression data from multiple tissues in hundreds of patients with coronary artery disease, we were able to identify disease-causing genes that either were specific to single tissues or acted across multiple tissues in networks to cause cardiometabolic diseases, said Johan Björkegren, MD, PhD, senior author of the study, Professor of Genetics and Genomic Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, visiting professor at University of ...

Background: Lactase non-persistent (LNP) individuals may be lactose intolerant and therefore on a more restricted diet concerning milk and milk products compared to lactase persistent (LP) individuals. This may have an impact on body fat mass.. Objective This study examines if LP and LNP children and adolescents, defined by genotyping for the LCT-13910 C , T polymorphism, differ from each other with regard to milk and milk product intake, and measures of body fat mass.. Design: Children (n=298, mean age 9.6 years) and adolescents (n=386, mean age 15.6 years), belonging to the Swedish part of the European Youth Heart Study, were genotyped for the LCT-13910 C , T polymorphism. Dietary intakes of reduced and full-fat dairy varieties were determined.. Results: LNP (CC genotype) subjects consumed less milk, soured milk and yoghurt compared to LP (CT/TT genotype) subjects (p,0.001). Subsequent partitioning for age group attenuated this observation (p=0.002 for children and p=0.023 in adolescents). Six ...
While critics on the right have accused the Obama administration of moving too slowly on the still-unproven potential of oil shale on Colorados Western Slope, observers on the left say the White House has been pushing too fast on an agenda promoting Wyomings Powder River Basin coal and tar sands oil production in Canada.. The nonprofit Checks and Balances Project on Thursday released an analysis (pdf) of the nascent oil shale industry entitled Oil Shale: a century old science fiction story. It looks at more than 84,000 articles on oil shale between 1910 and 1980, many of them portraying the energy source as being very close to commercial viability. However, the process still remains experimental and has never produced oil for commercial consumption in the United States.. For the last century, politicians and oil industry executives have been telling the greatest science fiction story in America, that oil shale will soon save America from our energy woes, said Matt Garrington, the ...

Georgia is a country with high emigration intensity. Main reason for emigration is search for employment abroad. Namely, 75 - 80% of emigrants are migrant workers. In spite of this, Georgias labour migration policy is still only at a formation stage and the activities of private employment agencies in the field are neither efficient nor ethical. As a result, labour migration from Georgia is mainly of unorganized and irregular nature, accompanied by related risks and socio-economic losses. Though the Government of Georgia shows more and more interest towards temporary labour migration through fostering inter-country cooperation, relevant underdeveloped models significantly hinder its development.. It is an aim of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission to Georgia to form and pilot in practice the abovementioned model. Poland and Estonia were selected as pilot countries and the project Piloting Temporary Labour Migration of Georgian Workers to Poland and Estonia was developed ...

Heiti Talviks laconic poetry has been called a concentrate of eternal sadness. One of his devices is fire: yet, while every fire one day burns down to ash, Talviks poems seems to be smoldering just as strongly as when they impacted the world, freshly written. His poetry was renowned while banned; it has been put to music, and has a firm place even in todays pop culture.. Talvik was born in Tartu in 1904 to a family of a university student of medicine, a future professor of forensic medicine, and a talented pianist. His godmother was Finnish-Estonian writer Aino Kallas. Talviks father, who was a literature enthusiast, incited an interest in poetry and philosophy in his children. A student of Estonian language and literature, folk poetry and art history at the University of Tartu, Heiti Talvik did not complete his studies; however, he was an erudite, sensitive critic and publicist alongside his poetry-writing. Desiring conviction in the correctness of his choices, he also worked as an ...

Previously published data suggest that liver-specific score systems are less accurate compared with the ICU-specific scoring systems acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) and simplified organ failure assessment (SOFA) in predicting outcome. We hypothesized that in a Scandinavian cohort of ICU patients, APACHE II, SOFA, and simplified acute physiology score (SAPS II) were superior to predict outcome compared with the Child-Pugh score. As novel hydraulic fracturing technology with directional drilling continues to improve, shale oil will continue to be a game-changer for North American refiners. Although credited with many advantages, shale oil does not come without its challenges. Suppliers and processors alike are urgently working to adapt to the changing oil landscape. Just a few years ago, investments were focused on processing heavy crudes. Now, however, the industry is faced with lighter, sweeter crude streams from shale plays. In varying degrees at each refinery, shale oil makes up only a percentage of the total feedstock. Present estimates put shale oil production at 5% of total US crude demand. The percentage cou. ...

The Socio-Economic Segregation in European Capital Cities: East Meets West project investigates changing levels of socio-economic segregation in 13 major European cities: Amsterdam, Budapest, Vienna, Stockholm, Oslo, London, Vilnius, Tallinn, Prague, Madrid, Milan, Athens and Riga. The two main conclusions of this major study are that the levels of socio-economic segregation in European cities are still relatively modest compared to some other parts of the world but that the spatial gap between poor and rich is widening in all capital cities across Europe. Segregation levels in the East of Europe started at a lower level compared to the West of Europe, but the East is quickly catching up, although there are large dif- ferences between cities. Four central factors were found to play a major role in the changing urban landscape in Europe: welfare and housing regimes, globalisation and economic restructuring, rising economic inequality and historical development paths. Where state intervention in ...

I - finally - made some hatchapuri. Hatchapuri, for those of you who dont know it, is a famous Georgian cheesebread. Somehow - not sure where I got the guts to do that! - I ended up wholeheartedly defending Georgian cuisine in general and hatchapuri recipe in particular over at Kuidaore during my very early blogging days. Il Fornos Alberto wrote about hatchapuri (or khachapuri, as he spells it) already in early 2004. More recently, my fellow Edinburgh blogger (until I moved back home, that is) Melissa so eloquently wrote about it on The Travelers Lunchbox. Theres a recipe in the latest Nigella book, as well as Darra Goldsteins almost scholarly book The Georgian Feast. This very cheesebread is positively in at the moment. However, as both of these books of mine are still in sort of transit from Edinburgh to Tallinn and I wont get my hands on them until Christmas, then I had to look elsewhere for a suitable recipe. The simple recipe below is adapted from an Estonian food enthusiast who ...
Smart Living is a new Estonia-Latvia programme project and main objectives are aimed to promote the concept of Smart Living. With this project we will raise public awareness about environmentally friendly lifestyle and smart use of energy resources in Latvia and Estonia, combining knowledge and competence of organization in both countries. We will focus directly on informing Latvian and Estonian societies on the possibilities to save energy resources, as well as addressing Estonian and Latvian real estate managers regarding the use of renewable energy resources.. During project implementation following main activities are planned to be performed:. ...
Source: Latvijas Statistika].. On the positive side, Latvia did see modest improvements in its mortality rates, which fell by 3.6% from 2008 to 2009 (though theyve remained almost stagnant so far in 2010). Unsurprisingly, after a period of demographic recovery in the 2000s, Latvias rate of natural population decrease has started opening up again, rising from a loss of 7058 people in 2008 to 8220 people in 2009, and almost certain to increase further this year.. Small consolation. Going by the experiences of other countries in the region, the falling marriage rate in Latvia should have been accompanied by a simultaneously falling divorce rate, so the post-2008 annual decline in net couple formation should have been less than 20%.. Estonia. Estonias had a milder recession than Latvia with a GDP fall of 14% (its all comparative!) and it did not decimate its welfare state to quite the same extent. It also started from a position of significantly greater affluence and its fertility rate was at ...
In recent decades, the EU has made significant progress towards gender equality: more women now go out to work, and they have better access to education and training. The European Commission has helped promote gender equality through the strategy for equality between women & men. The World Economic Forum has published since 2006 a comparative study on gender equality in 135 countries around the world. In 2012 Finland came second in this survey second only to Iceland.. Getting help. Ever felt that your gender has stopped you from getting a job? Or witnessed someone being unfairly treated because of their gender? Information and advice on how you can defend your statutory rights can be obtained in Finland from the Ombudsman for Equality. The Ombudsman for Equality is responsible for monitoring the observance of the Act on Equality between Women and Men. The Ombudsman for Equality works as an independent authority within the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The Ombudsman for Equality gives ...
Not everyone seems to understand the trade-off between allowing their data to be accessed and ad-funded content. In general, consumers in Eastern European countries like Estonia are less tolerant of their data being used than those in Western European countries like the U.K. and Germany, according to a 2017 study from research firm GfK on behalf of IAB Europe that surveyed 11,020 people across 11 European countries, including the U.K., France, Germany and Spain.. Across all 11 countries, 77 percent said they prefer to access free generic news content and services online while keeping their browsing history private, rather than have a more personalized content experience that would require them to allow more data access. Unsurprisingly, respondents ages 16 to 24 favored personalized content more than people older than 25, according to the same report. That said, 83 percent of respondents said they prefer free online content with accompanying ads over paying for content, and 69 percent said they ...

Although the media is slowly picking up on this threat, there has been little analysis or insight into the motivation of these recruits, aside from attributing some mystical marketing skills to ISIS. In fact, research suggests that there is a significant push factor providing a conducive context for ISIS recruitment in Europe. ISIS has been able to capitalize on the lack of social integration of young people of Muslim immigrant descent in Europe, who are often victims of discrimination and stymied from full participation in European labor markets and societies. The elephant in the room is in fact Europes inability to welcome fully and integrate its immigrant populations. The irony is that many recruits are Westernized second-generation immigrants, who grow up having a non-Western, immigrant other status thrust upon them. This may arise by virtue of physical characteristics such as skin color or ethnic background, or by having a name such as Mohammed or Abdoulaye, or because they practice ...
These are the members of NATO, a military alliance formed in 1949 to protect European countries against the Soviet Union. Only a strong defensive alliance could deter them from further adventures. NATO now includes 29 countries, including three that are former Soviet states. EstoniaLatvia … Lituania. The Soviet Union may have collapsed, but Russia is still trying to wield influence over the region and undermine nations who get in its way. How? By trying to destabilize America and Europe, and damage their relationship. The goal: to weaken alliances so Russia can more freely pursue its interests. From cybermeddling to mind games, heres how the country and its leader, Vladimir Putin, excel at geostrategic trolling.. One tactic? The method: Invade a foreign nation, reject the outcry and hold the territory. Exhibit A: Just as Ukraine was embarking on a pro-Western course and possibly joining NATO, Russian-backed rebels seized Crimea. Theyve been there ever since. And Russia even built a ...
Why? The European Unions economy is 10 times that of Russia. Europes population is twice Russias.. Why are we still there? Though we have given NATO war guarantees to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, our McCainiacs want them handed out to Ukraine and Georgia. Yet no president in his right mind is going to go to war with a nuclear-armed Russia over some Caucasus dustup or Baltic brawl. If Richard Nixon could achieve a modus vivendi with Chairman Mao, have we no statesman who can patch it up with Vladimir Putin? A first step might be to pull all U.S. missiles out of Eastern Europe and put our democracy-meddlers on the next plane out of Moscow. Even as Ike was telling JFK to bring the troops home from Europe, Gen. Douglas MacArthur was urging JFK not to put his foot soldiers in Asia - advice not taken there, either. On retirement, Robert Gates said any future defense secretary who advises a president to fight another land war in Asia ought to have his head examined. So why do we have 28,000 U.S. ...
