Esthesioneuroblastoma grading sheet, Staging esthesioneuroblastoma Esthesioneuroblastoma is a rare cancer that starts in the nervous system cells responsible for smell. The most common staging system for esthesioneuroblastoma is the Kadish staging system.
Olfactory Esthesioneuroblastoma: A malignant olfactory neuroblastoma arising from the olfactory epithelium of the superior nasal cavity and cribriform plate. It is uncommon (3% of nasal tumors) and rarely is associated with the production of excess hormones (e.g., SIADH, Cushing Syndrome). It has a high propensity for multiple local recurrences and bony metastases. (From Holland et al., Cancer Medicine, 3rd ed, p1245; J Laryngol Otol 1998 Jul;112(7):628-33)
Esthesioneuroblastoma (also termed olfactory neuroblastoma) is a small round cell tumor arising from the nasal neuroepithelium that is distinct from primitive neuroectodermal tumors.[ 1, 2, 3, 4] In children, esthesioneuroblastoma is a very rare malignancy, with an estimated incidence of 0.1 cases per 100,000 per year...
Esthesioneuroblastoma has been reported to originate from sphenopalatine ganglion, vomeronasal organ of Jacobson, neuroepithelial cells of the olfactory membrane, the ectopic olfactory epithelium in the nasal mucosa and the amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation cells [1, 2]. It is a locally infiltrating malignant neoplasm; frequently invades the skull base, orbit and adjacent soft tissue from the typical cribriform site. In our patient, the neoplasm has infiltrated the left orbit through destruction of medial orbital wall resulting in proptosis. Distant and regional metastases are seen in about 14-38% of cases at the time of diagnosis; cervical lymph nodes, lung and bone being the frequently involved sites [4]. Esthesioneuroblastoma should be differentiated from other malignant tumors in anterior skull base.. CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are helpful to identify the margin and spread approaches of the tumor. Fine-cut CT scan (3 mm slice thickness) with direct coronal imaging is ...
We describe a case of radiation-induced olfactory neuroblastoma in a patient with a history of radiation for Graves ophthalmopathy. We also reviewed the literature and found four other cases of radiation-induced olfactory neuroblastoma reported since 2000, suggesting prior radiotherapy as one risk factor for this disease.
These are rare tumors that grow in the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses. They can be benign or malignant. Either can cause nasal blockage and bleeding, accompanied by pain around the eyes or nose, facial swelling, loose upper teeth and double vision. People frequently exposed to harmful chemicals are at greater risk of developing nasal cavity cancers, including olfactory neuroblastoma.
Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) is a rare, aggressive tumor with no established treatment in children. We analyzed a series of pediatric ENB patients with the aim of improving our knowledge of this disease. 9 patients (6 males; age 0.9-18 years, median 9.9) were identified by searching the AIEOP (Italian Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology) registry and the national databases of rare tumors, soft tissue sarcomas (STS) and neuroblastomas. The data on the cases included in STS treatment protocols were collected prospectively and histology was centrally reviewed; the data and histology concerning the other children were reviewed for the purpose of this analysis. All tumors occurred in the sinonasal region with bone erosion (7 patients) and intracranial (4) or intraorbital (4) extension. Three patients were in Kadish stage B, and 6 in stage C. Complete tumor resection was very difficult to achieve, but adding chemotherapy and radiotherapy enabled tumor control in 8 patients. Response to
Few neoplasms are unique to the sinonasal tract, but sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma and olfactory neuroblastoma are malignant tumors which require unique management. Due to the rarity of these tumors, practicing pathologists are not always aware of their distinctive clinical, radiographic, histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular features. These cases are frequently submitted for consultation, further suggesting the diagnostic difficulties inherent to these tumors. Specifically, olfactory neuroblastoma is a neoplasm that can histologically mimic many tumors within the sinonasal tract, making recognition of this tumor important, as the management frequently requires a bicranial-facial surgical approach, a trephination procedure which can be quite technically difficult and challenging to achieve a good result. The management is therefore quite unique in comparison to other sinonasal tract malignancies, setting it apart diagnostically and managerially from other lesions ...
Some late effects may be treated or controlled. It is important to talk with your childs doctors about the possible late effects caused by some treatments. See the PDQ summary on Late Effects of Treatment for Childhood Cancer.. Three types of standard treatment are used:. Surgery. Surgery to remove the tumor is one of the main treatments used for esthesioneuroblastoma.. Even if the doctor removes all the cancer that can be seen at the time of the surgery, some patients may be given chemotherapy or radiation therapy after surgery to kill any cancer cells that are left. Treatment given after surgery, to lower the risk that the cancer will come back, is called adjuvant therapy.. Radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment that uses high-energy x-rays or other types of radiation to kill cancer cells or keep them from growing. External radiation therapy uses a machine outside the body to send radiation toward the cancer.. Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment that uses ...
My husband is 76 years old and was operated on February, 2014, for an esthesioneuroblastoma. He had both the cranial and nasal approach. Margins were all clear, thankfully. Doctors recommended no chemo or radiation, but follow-up scans every 6 months for 2 years. He irrigates twice a day. While it is a minor problem in view of all that can happen he constantly complains of a wierd smell, which cant really be a smell because his olfactory nerve was totally removed. He also complains of stuffiness in his sinus area that causes inability to sleep through the night. I notice that his short term memory is not very good. Has anyone else experienced these problems. ...
Wow. I got on this site a month before my husbands surgery, just after diagnosis, in March of 2007. I dont know what I did, but I never found ANY of you people. Im glad to know that there are other survivors out there - though Im sad for the unexpected sufferings youve had, too. Im just amazed to find others now, and didnt even remember being on this site before today. I do know that I hunted Everywhere I could, and could only find a few places on the internet back then that even mentioned the word esthesioneuroblastoma. Anyway, my husband was diagnosed in February of 07 at age 45. Hed been going to the drs around here for nearly 15 months due to a blocked nostril. He was finally sent to a sinus doc who prescribed a bunch of different things and then an ENT who ordered the first MRI and sent him straight down to Emory in Atlanta without telling us what he saw.. So we found out it was cancer when they ordered the PET scan and we asked what it was for. The reply? To rule out Other ...

Cancer of the nasal acavity and paranasal sinuses is relatively rare, ocurs more often in men (2:1) and usually appears after 40 years, (except minor salivary gland origin, lymphoma, or esthesioneuroblastoma). Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type, followed by adenocarcinoma. These tumors have a propensity to grow slowly, insidiously towards the anterior skull base and orbit. Imaging is essential since it allows a precise tumor mapping, a key element for therapeutic planning. CT allows to visualize the bony structures, particularly the internal orbital wall and cribriborm plate. MR permits to differentiate between the tumor, which most often is seen as a T2 weighted low signal intensity area, and inflammatory tissue which shows up bright. In addition it can displays meningeal and intracerebral involvement. MR information can help selecting the correct surgical approach, particularly a combined neurosurgical-ENT approach if the anterior cranial fossa has to be removed ...
Introduction: Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) is a rare malignancy with limited therapeutic options when unresectable or metastatic. The overexpression of cell-surface somatostatin receptors in ENB is a potential molecular target making it amenable to peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT). High-level evidence supporting PRRT has been published for unresectable gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours; however, data is limited for PRRT efficacy for ENB ...

Olfactory neuroblastoma sounds like a complicated condition but breaking the name down makes it easy to get an understanding. Olfactory in the name refers to the olfactory system i.e. the sensory system of the human body or the system of smell. In the most laymen terms it can be used to refer to the nose in humans, since the nose helps draw in the smell. And neuroblastoma usually refers to a malignant tumor which is made of neuroblasts.. Put these together and the resulting condition refers to the development of malignant tumors in the nose. This is a very rare condition and is also known by the name- esthesioneuroblastomas.. ...
Expression of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) mRNA by some tumor cell lines of neuroectodermal origin has been described. To further explore the significance of IGF-I mRNA expression in these tumors, a more extensive analysis was performed. Most (9 of 10) neuroectodermal tumor cell lines with a t(11;22) translocation (primitive neuroectodermal tumor [PNET], Ewings sarcoma, esthesioneuroblastoma) expressed IGF-I mRNA, whereas 0 of 15 cell lines without the translocation (PNET, neuroblastoma) expressed IGF-I. Furthermore, inasmuch as all neuroblastoma (12 of 12) cell lines examined expressed IGF-II RNA, the pattern of IGF expression could distinguish between these closely related tumors. CHP-100, a PNET cell line with the t(11;22) translocation, was shown to secrete both IGF-I protein and an IGF binding protein, IGFBP-2. This cell line also expressed the type I IGF receptor mRNA, and blockade of this receptor by a monoclonal antibody (alpha IR3) inhibited serum-free growth. These data ...

Types of cancer found in the nasal and sinus cavities: Adenocarcinomas and mucoepidermoid cancers (cancers arising from gland cells) are the next most frequent type. Malignant lymphomas, a cancer arising from lymph or immune system cells. Malignant melanoma a cancer of pigment or skin color containing cells. Esthesioneuroblastomas come from the olfactory nerves, the nerves which govern the sense of smell. These cancers usually occur on the roof of the nasal cavity and involve a structure called the cribriform plate, which is a bone deep in the skull.

A combination of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now established as the optimum assessment of sinonasal malignancy. CT and MRI are of particular value in assessing the skull base, orbit and pteryo-palatine and infratemporal fossae. Although MRI offers better differentiation of tumour from surrounding tissue and fluid, coronal CT is still required for the demonstration of bone erosion particularly in the region of the cribriform plate. Thus the extent of local tumour spread may be determined with a degree of accuracy in excess of 98 per cent. However, the final determinant of penetration of the dura and orbital periosteum requires per-operative frozen section assessment. A knowledge of the tissue characteristics and site of origin can be of value in distinguishing some of the commoner sinonasal malignancies such as squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, olfactory neuroblastoma and chondrosarcoma. Imaging, particularly MRI also plays an ...

We know that Ethan will be in the hospital for many months, Scott said. But the progress we have seen - which we are measuring week to week and month to month, not day to day - has been in a forward direction.. Initially hospitalized in Indianapolis, Ethan was airlifted to Cincinnati Childrens Hospital in early July. After two weeks in intensive care, he has regained the ability to breathe on his own, but he remains unable to engage in purposeful movements. Although he has irregular periods of open-eyed wakefulness, his parents told JTA they are not sure of the extent of his vision.. The family has benefited from the support of their community, including their rabbi, Sissy Coran, of Rockdale Temple in Cincinnati, who spent the night with the Kadishes on the second day of Ethans hospitalization. Meals have been delivered to them three times a week, and hundreds have signed up for Team Ethan on the Lotsa Helping Hands Web site, which assists families caring for a sick relative.. We have ...

what id do is encode the order and property value into a number. numbers have the advantage of fast comparisons.. this is a general idea and may still need some work but i hope it would help in some way.. calculate a number (some form of hash) for each property and multiply the number representative of the order of appearance the property for an item.. say item1 has 3 properties A, B and C.. hash(A) = 123, hash(B) = 345, hash(C) = 456. then multiply that by the order of appearance given that we have a know number of properties:. (hash(A) * 1,000,00) + (hash(B) * 1,000) + (hash(C) * 1) = someval. magnitude of the multiplier can be tweaked to reflect your data set. youll have to identify the hash function. soundex maybe?. the problem is now reduced to a question of uniqueness due to hash collisions but we can be pretty sure about properties that dont match.. also, this would have the advantage of relative ease of checking if a property appears in another item in different order by using the ...

Posted on 04/22/2008 12:07:37 PM PDT by anymouse. U.S. authorities arrested an American engineer on Tuesday on suspicion of giving secrets on nuclear weapons, fighter jets and air defense missiles to Israel during the 1980s, the Justice Department said. Ben-Ami Kadish, 84, acknowledged his spying in FBI interviews and said he acted out of a belief that he was helping Israel, court papers said. He was accused of reporting to an Israeli government handler who also dealt with Jonathan Jay Pollard, an American citizen serving a life term on a 1985 charge of spying for Israel. Kadishs arrest is a sign the Pollard scandal, which remains an irritant in the close U.S. alliance with Israel, may have spread wider than was previously acknowledged. Kadish was arrested in New Jersey and was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday afternoon at U.S. District Court in New York City, authorities said. We will be informing the Israelis of this action, State Department spokesman Tom Casey said. Twenty-plus years ...

We describe a parallel design principle for hash functions. Given a secure hash function $h:\{0,1\}^n\rightarrow \{0,1\}^m$ with $n\geq 2m$, and a binary tree of $2^t$ processors we show how to construct a secure hash function $h^{*}$ which can hash messages of lengths less than $2^{n-m}$ and a secure hash function $h^{\infty}$ which can hash messages of arbitrary length. The number of parallel rounds required to hash a message of length $L$ is $\lfloor\frac{L}{2^t}\rfloor+t+2$. Further, our algorithm is incrementally parallelizable in the following sense : given a digest produced using a binary tree of $2^t$ processors, we show that the same digest can also be produced using a binary tree of $2^{t^{\prime}}$ $(0\leq t^{\prime}\leq t)$ processors ...
