Spring establishment of orchardgrass and tall fescue seed crops with cereal companion crops
Orchardgrass and tall fescue seed crops are commonly springplanted in Oregon, but do not produce a marketable crop during the first growing season. Establishing orchardgrass and tall fescue with cereal companion crops would provide income during the seeding year and could increase seed production profits. This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of establishing orchardgrass and tall fescue seed crops with spring wheat, barley, and oats, and to examine the morphological, physiological, seed yield, and economic responses to competition with cereals. Hallmark orchardgrass and Bonanza tall fescue were interplanted with Waverly wheat, Steptoe barley, and Cayuse oats in 15- and 30-cm rows at right angles to grass rows in March 1985 and 1986 near Corvallis, OR. Spring cereals reduced the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) available for grass seedling growth, causing transient increases in chlorophyll content and lower soil temperatures. Soil water content was also depleted, ...

Making Hay From Fall Regrowth Reduces Fescue Endophyte Toxins. University of Missouri research evaluated alternative options for harvesting fall regrowth of endophyte infected tall fescue. The research was conducted at The University of Missouri Southwest Experiment station near Mt. Vernon. The high endophyte infected fescue was fertilized with 75 lbs/acre of nitrogen in August, then harvested in mid-October. The four harvest methods studied were: greenchop, ensiling, baling, and ammoniating bales. Ensiled forage was allowed to wilt to 55% moisture, wrapped in air-tight bags and stored for six weeks. Hay was allowed to sun-cure to 16% moisture and baled. Ammoniated hay was made by sun-curing the hay to 16% moisture, baled, wrapped in air-tight bags, treated with 3% anhydrous ammonia, and stored for six weeks.. Tall fescue produces symptoms of toxicosis when ergovaline, the most highly concentrated ergopeptine alkaloid, reaches 200 to 300 parts per billion (ppb). The green chop tall fescue ...
DailyMed - CAFERGOT- ergotamine tartrate and caffeine tablet, film coated
Coadministration of ergotamine with potent CYP 3A4 inhibitors (ritonavir, nelfinavir, indinavir, erythromycin, clarithromycin, and troleandomycin) has been associated with acute ergot toxicity (ergotism) characterized by vasospasm and ischemia of the extremities (see Precautions: Drug Interactions), with some cases resulting in amputation. There have been rare reports of cerebral ischemia in patients on protease inhibitor therapy when Cafergot (ergotamine tartrate and caffeine tablets, USP) was coadministered, at least one resulting in death. Because of the increased risk for ergotism and other serious vasospastic adverse events, ergotamine use is contraindicated with these drugs and other potent inhibitors of CYP 3A4 (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole) (see Warnings: CYP 3A4 Inhibitors).. Cafergot (ergotamine tartrate and caffeine tablets, USP) may cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women. Ergovaline - Wikipedia
Ergovaline is an ergopeptine and one of the ergot alkaloids. It is usually found in endophyte-infected species of grass like Tall fescue or Perennial Ryegrass. It is toxic to cattle feeding on infected grass, probably because it acts as a vasoconstrictor. Neotyphodium coenophialum Richard Browning (2003). Cerebral ischemia frequently leads to long-term disability and death. ischemia) we observed an increased expression of CHOP accompanied by a strong reduction of cell surface GABAB receptors. Our results indicate that down-regulation of cell surface GABAB receptors is caused by the interaction of the receptors with CHOP in the ER. Binding of CHOP prevented Ergotamine Tartrate heterodimerization of the receptor subunits GABAB1 and GABAB2 and subsequent forward trafficking of the receptors to the cell surface. The reduced level of cell surface receptors diminished GABAB receptor signaling and thus neuronal inhibition. These findings indicate that ischemia-mediated up-regulation of CHOP down-regulates cell surface GABAB receptors by preventing their trafficking from the ER to the plasma membrane. This mechanism leads to diminished neuronal inhibition and may contribute to excitotoxicity in cerebral ischemia. Ergotamine Tartrate and (10 -19). Previous studies have shown that Ivermactin dewormer has reduced fescue toxicosis symptoms, however ivermectin only acts for roughly 28 days. This study used eprinomectin, commercially known as LongRange,a drug in the same family (avermactins) as ivermectin but that lasts for 100-150 days to see if this also reduced signs of fescue toxicosis ...
Lolitrem B - Wikipedia
Lolitrem B is one of many toxins produced by a fungus called Epichloë festucae (var. lolii), which grows in perennial ryegrass. The fungus is symbiotic with the ryegrass; it doesnt harm the plant, and the toxins it produces kill insects that feed on ryegrass. Lolitrem B is one of these toxins, but it is also harmful to mammals. The shoots and flowers of infected ryegrass have especially high concentrations of lolitrem B, and when livestock eat too much of them, they get perennial ryegrass staggers. At low doses the animals have tremors, and at higher doses they stagger, and at higher yet doses the animals become paralyzed and die. The blood pressure of the animals also goes up. The effect of the lolitrem B comes on slowly and fades out slowly, as it is stored in fat after the ryegrass is eaten. The condition is especially common in New Zealand and Australia, and plant breeders there have been trying to develop strains of fungus that produce toxins only harmful to pests, and not to mammals. ...

Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The serotonin (5HT) receptor 5HT2A is involved in the tall fescue alkaloid-induced vascular contraction in the bovine periphery. This was determined by evaluating the contractile responses of lateral saphenous veins biopsied from cattle grazing different tall fescue/endophyte combinations. The contractile responses of the biopsied blood vessel segments to different alkaloids (ergovaline, ergotamine, and ergocornine) were evaluated in the presence or absence of an antagonist or blocker of the 5HT2A receptor. The presence of the antagonist significantly reduced the contractile response to all three alkaloids in all three pasture types. A better understanding of how tall fescue alkaloids cause peripheral vasoconstriction will lead to better solutions for summer slump and fescue foot manifestations of the fescue toxicosis syndrome. ...

Perennial ryegrass staggers (PRGS) is a neurological mycotoxicosis caused by the ingestion of lolitrem-B. In this study, seven horses split into two separate groups were exposed to lolitrem-B by feeding them perennial ryegrass seed and hay containing 2 ppm lolitrem-B. Paired data was collected prior to and after two weeks exposure to lolitrem-B including video-documented neurological examination, clinical examination, brainstem auditory evoked (BAEP) and magnetic motor evoked (mMEP) potentials, blood and cerebrospinal fluid, and a frusemide challenge. All horses developed tremor when exposed to lolitrem-B. The degree of tremor varied between individual horses and also depended on the level of activity, increasing during feeding and exercise. Using an ophthalmoscope a subtle, rapid (~5 Hz) tremor of the eyeball was detected in six of the seven horses. Subtle signs of ataxia were observed during handling, and motor dysfunction was exaggerated when blindfolded. Ataxia primarily involved a truncal ...

Tall Fescue - TurfFiles
Tall fescue is the most widely grown cool-season species in North Carolina. For a cool-season species, tall fescue is tolerant to heat and drought, disease resistant, and persists with minimum care. It has a tendency to clump due to its bunch-type growth habit and may need to be re-seeded each year in areas that exhibit thin growth patterns due to excessive summer stresses. Tall fescue is easily confused with Kentucky bluegrass, annual ryegrass, and perennial ryegrass. However, Kentucky bluegrass has a boat-shaped leaf tip and distinctive light-colored lines on both sides of the midrib. Tall fescue has rolled vernation in the leaf bud and perennial ryegrass has folded vernation. Also, tall fescue has rough leaf blade margins whereas annual and perennial ryegrass have smooth ones. Tall fescue and perennial ryegrass both have non-clasping auricles, whereas annual ryegrass has clasping auricles. The backside of the tall fescue leaf blade is less glossy than that of annual ryegrass.. ...

Livestock foraging behavior in response to interactions among alkaloids, tannins, and saponins - OpenThesis
Plant secondary compounds abound in every plant mother nature has to offer. From common garden vegetables to poisonous plants, there are secondary compounds in every plant any animal, as well as we, chooses to eat. In the past, secondary compounds were mostly considered waste products of plant metabolism, but over the last several decades research has shown that these compounds play an active role in plant and animal behavior, health, and productivity. Though often seen only in terms of their negative impacts on intake and production, we are becoming increasingly aware of their beneficial roles in plant, animal, and human health. Providing herbivores with a diversity of plants to make up their diet allows them to regulate and mix foods so as to better utilize primary and secondary compounds, as well as enhancing economic and ecological performance. The secondary compound gramine is an alkaloid found in reed canarygrass that is proteinaceous in nature. Endophyte-infected tall fescue contains the ...

During the last 100 years, in Western Europe and elsewhere, considerable effort has been devoted to improving perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) for agriculture. The first persistent cultivars to be widely used were more digestible than other common pasture species but were no higher yielding than the better wild populations of perennial ryegrass. Two main approaches (here called mainstream breeding and population improvement) have been used to further improve the species for the UK, but no recent experiments to assess progress have been published. In 2006, two plot trials were established at IBERS to compare the performance of some newer cultivars and candidate varieties with the first persistent cultivars to be widely used in the UK. One trial involved comparing 10 intermediate-heading (6 diploid and 4 tetraploid) cultivars and candidate varieties with the intermediate-heading cv. Talbot, and the other involved comparing 11 late-heading (4 diploid and 7 tetraploid) cultivars and candidate ...
Fescue toxicosis can lead to summer slump | UK College of Agriculture News
LEXINGTON, Ky. Tall fescue is a popular grass for Kentucky pastures for many reasons-it is hardy and tolerates drought, has a root system that aids in controlling erosion and can stand up to heavy grazing. Farmers can even stockpile it for winter grazing. However, an endophyte fungus that commonly infects the plant can affect livestock. Summertime tends to be peak time for fungus-related problems.. Fescue toxicosis is the general term used for the clinical diseases that can affect cattle consuming endophyte-infected tall fescue, said Michelle Arnold, ruminant extension veterinarian for the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Something important for Kentucky producers to watch for is a syndrome frequently referred to as summer slump. Affected cattle appear hot with labored respiration (open mouth and/or rapid breathing) and excessive salivation. They avoid grazing during the day and seek shade or mud wallows to find relief from heat.. Externally, cattle may ...

Although serum vinblastine levels are shown, no data are given for levels achieved in the platelets. Under the conditions described, does the patients platelet-rich plasma have a higher drug content than platelet-poor plasma? Does the alkaloid concentration achieved effect the function of the platelets?. We have shown a platelet dysfunction in patients treated with vincristine (2). Technique Summary Resources and references Saphenous vein sampling in other animals All blood sampling techniques in the guinea pig Please read the general principles of blood sampling page before attempting any blood sampling procedure. Technique Sampling from the lateral saphenous vein is a relatively quick method of obtaining blood samples from all strains of guinea pig. It does not require the animal to be warmed. Slides and videos of restraint, shaving and sampling for this technique with mice are available on the websites of the Norwegian Reference Centre for Laboratory Animal Science. Blood is collected from the lateral saphenous vein, which runs dorsally and then laterally over the tarsal joint. Conscious guinea pigs should be restrained either manually or using a restraint tube. This can cause stress and therefore the duration of restraint should be minimised. Where a restraint tube is used, it should be appropriate for the size of the guinea pig. All forms of restraining equipment should be

Improving cattle grazing fescue pastures with legumes
Cattle producers see more profit when they add legumes to fescue pastures and manage grazing systems properly, says Patrick Davis, University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist.. Fescue remains the hardy mainstay of southwestern Missouri pastures. Adding legumes gives fescue fields more nutritional punch and profit, Davis says. Proper management is key to making grasses and legumes work well together, he says. This begins with management-intensive grazing (MIG).. Under MIG, cattle graze on forage 3 to 8 inches tall. Cattle begin grazing at 8 inches and eat forage down to 3 inches. This is followed by paddock rest until the forage reaches original height. This strategy promotes stronger roots and gives cattle best-quality forage, Davis says. Forage in this range also contains less ergovaline, a toxic alkaloid. The highest concentrations of ergovaline are in the bottom 2 inches of the plant and seed heads.. Add legumes into fescue pastures for other benefits. Pasture quality improves and ...

Venous Relaxation Caused by Acetylcholine Acting on the Sympathetic Nerves | Circulation Research
Experiments were performed to determine whether acetylcholine affects the sympathetic activation of the cutaneous veins of the dog. Changes in isometric tension of saphenous vein strips were recorded at 37°C in an organ bath. Addition of acetylcholine at 10-11 to 10-8 g/ml did not affect basal tension, but larger doses (5 x 10-8 to 5 x 10-7 g/ml) caused a contraction of the strips which varied from slight to marked. Acetylcholine at 10-8 to 10-7 g/ml caused a further increase in tension when it was added to strips already contracted by norepinephrine, tyramine, KCl, or BaCl2; in contrast, similar doses of acetylcholine caused relaxation of strips contracted by liberation of norepinephrine from the nerve terminals by electrical stimulation (1-10 cps). This relaxation was not influenced by propranolol or hexamethonium but was abolished by atropine (10-8 g/ml). In intact dogs, the lateral saphenous vein was perfused with autologous blood at constant flow. A sustained venoconstriction was induced ...
