TY - JOUR. T1 - Burrowing mayfly Ephemera orientalis (Ephemeroptera. T2 - Ephemeridae) as a new test species for pesticide toxicity. AU - Mo, Hyoung ho. AU - Kim, Yongeun. AU - Lee, Yun Sik. AU - Bae, Yeon Jae. AU - Khim, Jong Seong. AU - Cho, Ki Jong. PY - 2016/6/17. Y1 - 2016/6/17. N2 - The potential of mayfly Ephemera orientalis McLachlan eggs and first-instar larvae in ecotoxicological testing was investigated. Both stages of E. orientalis showed high tolerance to various environmental variables, such as water temperature, pH, water hardness, and dissolved organic carbon. Toxicological assays were conducted with three insecticides (emamectin benzoate, endosulfan, and cypermethrin), one fungicide (mancozeb), and one herbicide (paraquat dichloride). The two toxicity endpoints for the assay were the 14-day egg median hatching rate (EHC50) in static and renewal exposure systems and 24-h median larval mortality (LC50). Cypermethrin was the most toxic to both eggs (EHC50 in static system = 36.9 ...

Abstract In 1815, Shikitei Sanba wrote prefaces to two scrapbooks: one in which he had collected ephemera and broadsheets related to the history of Edos raconteurs and the other a 16-album collection of playbills. As physical objects, both are deeply suggestive: each is a manuscript comprised entirely of printed matter, a unique object fashioned from mass-produced material. This essay uses these collections to explore the historical imagination in the early decades of the nineteenth century, a time when the theater loomed large as a metaphor for the broader social world and a time when that world came increasingly to be defined by print and commerce.. ...

For your consideration I have a large archive from the Taylor and Donaldson families of Greenville, Michigan. The main emphasis is on the Taylor family which settled in upper state New York and moved to Michigan in the 19th century. They opened a business upon arriving to Michigan and began lucrative journey in local politics and commerce. Besides hundreds of photographs and ephemera the most intriguing aspect of this archive consist of three 19th journals detailing daily business activities and life in rural Michigan. In closing it is one of the richest and well documented archives I have ever been honored to own of one family. There is a lot of bang for the buck. Here is a complete inventory: (Greenville, Michigan Taylor & Donaldson Family Archive) Journal one September 1878 to December 1888 ( 6 x 9 inches) Journal two 1881-1887 ( 8 x 10 inches) Journal three contains hand- written notes on bridge and road repair in the Township of Eureka, Michigan From 1859-1899 ( 6 x 7 ½ inches) Photo Album ...

Unlike Bernsteins Requiem Mass, Danielpour never gets preachy. He lets the inherent beauty of the poetic texts, supported by his music, speak for itself. The work is tonal and quite easy to follow -- which I suspect was Danielpours intention. This isnt an esoteric work for the cognoscente, but rather a work that can be heard and enjoyed by a much wider audience. If you enjoy modern composers such as Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Benjamin Britten, or Michael Tippett, then you should find much to like in Daneilpours composition. Not that he sounds like any of those composers, but Danielpour seems to be coming from the same place ...
Why? Democrats will ONLY pick off Republican moderates. The wacko wing of the House comes from districts that will never flip. Thats why their elected Representatives are wackos - QED. So any Democratic gains will come in swing districts voting out less-than-totally-wacko Republicans.. The end result is (probably) a smaller Republican majority with a larger percentage share of wackos. As we have all learned in the last few years, that wacko wing is allergic to the actual business of government. Cue a nihilistic procession of government shutdowns, tilting at windmills (voting down Obamacare) and general grandstanding. Anything to avoid the actual messy, compromise-laden (ew! ech!) duties of governing a diverse country with its cross-currents of interests.. So why is a larger wacko wing a good thing? Because the beleaguered, non-wacko rump of the Republican could start doing deals across the aisle vs dealing (and failing) within their own party. That has arguably already happened. Very little ...

This sale on the 12th September saw an auction price record was achieved for a Battle of Britain B Type Flying Helmet when it hammered £5,900 this combination featured the rare Type 19 (flat) microphone for the D type canvas oxygen mask, this combination representing the classic look of the Battle of Britain fighter pilot. The lot was closely followed by a 1932 pattern RAF Green Mae West Life Jacket, again typical of the Battle of Britain period, which sold for £3,700. Surprise strong bidding by internet and two telephone bidders caused a Dog Fight for the medal group of Group Captain Thomas William George Eady whos flying career began in 1928 and ended in 1950. His medal group which included an India General Service Medal, was accompanied by one of the finest archive of log books, ephemera and no fewer than 10 photograph albums, which mostly covered his pre war service in the middle east, India and Iraq, it would fall to a hammer price of £4,100. Remaining with medals and ephemera, a ...
Oh yes, its another cracker. Quentin Norman Cooks, Andrew Thomas and Ian Laidlaws Peroxide ticks all the boxes offering practical advice, good writing, neat layout, great use of graphics, cool photos and multiple entreaties for punters to get involved. The 2nd and last issue acknowledges the encouragement and input from fellow fanzine writers so Ill be sure to post that at some point. Really, the only downside with this smasher is that only 2 issues saw the light. Issue 1 is packed with entertaining interviews and articles (the thorough what to do with a demo piece must have proved very useful to budding bands and musicians). Elsewhere we have: decent inteviews with Adam Ant, Toyah, The Merton Parkas; Rough Trade records in profile; an essay on factional violence; 7s - Essential Logic, The Plastics, Delta 5, Dr Mix & The Remixes, Scritti Politti, Cabaret Voltaire, The Mo-Dettes, The Monochrome Set, Spizz Energi, Harry J & The Allstars, Madness, Booker T & The MGs, Lena Lovich, John ...

In my local seaside town, no less, came the discovery at the end of May of a part of the hugely important and super-rare coding machine used by the Germans in the Second World War - the Lorenz encryptor, bigger and even more complex brother of the famous Enigma machines. Discovered, in of all places, eBay! Misidentified as a telegraph keyboard, and up for auction at a mere £9.50, it was only sheer luck that the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park came across it - sitting in the sellers garage under a pile of junk! Surely this must rank as one of the ultimate eBay finds?! Well done to those eagle-eyed museum chaps for spotting this important part of computing and Second World War history, even if it is incomplete. Proof, if proof were needed, that there are still treasures to be found on that site - and on that note, while were all searching around for that next bargain, keep an eye out for the Lorenzs motor, which is still yet to be found ...
The Eastchurch Kitten - or to give it its full designation, the Port Victoria P.V.8 Eastchurch Kitten - was borne out of an Admiralty specification created in 1916 for a small, light single-seat fighter designed to fly at high altitude and intercept the Zeppelin airships that were then terrorising the south-east of England. Two front-runners soon emerged from Royal Naval Air Service stations based in Kent. One was the brainchild of designer W. H. Sayers, based at the Port Victoria Marine Experimental Aircraft Depot on the Isle of Grain. The other was the Kitten, designed by the pen of G. H. Millar, located further along the north Kent coast at the RNAS Experimental Flight in Eastchurch. When the commanding officer of the Experimental Flight then took over at the Port Victoria station it was decided that the competing aeroplanes should both be further refined together at Port Victoria, therefore the Eastchurch design was called the P.V.8 Eastchurch Kitten while the other was renamed the P.V.7 ...

Day 10 brings in a character thats only been referenced indirectly so far in the sequence. Smokey Stover was a manic surreal comic strip written and drawn by Bill Holman. Often there were odd little visual puns in the background, and some recurring gags as well. Two phrases cropped up often in the strip -- on street signs, wall calenders, book covers, and just about anyplace else -- Notary Sojac, and 1506 Nix Nix. Both appeared in the first days continuity. Smokey Stovers cat, Spooky, was featured in day 7. Now the main character makes an appearance in his two-wheeled firetruck. (click on image to enlarge) ...

Through her poems and creative non-fiction writing, Maryanna explores everything from a chance encounter with a desert resident while stationed in Kuwait to the emotional impact and honor of service to our country. These have been interpreted by Melody to inspire visual works of art laden with symbolism and created with watermedia, ink, and ephemera. ...

May 5 1932 to September 27, 1932. Very neatly written. 111 pages, illustrated with 19 original photographs and postcards tipped in. About 50 additional blank pages in the hardcover album. Mrs. A. A. Flint was wife of Dr. Joseph M. Flint, retired head of Yale Department of Surgery. There is one photograph of Dr. and A. A. Flint. Dr. Flint celebrates his sixtieth birthday during the stay. One mss letter and a few pieces of ephemera also tipped in album. The entire diary is of their stay in Carlsbad, Germany - a very interesting portrait of mid-century Germany. At dinner one evening one man ranted about the awful Jews who came to Carlsbad. Their vulgarity, their cheapness, their constant and bitter fight against prices whether high or low etc. Surprisingly, the man sitting next to Mrs. Flint whispered to her that the man speaking was himself a Jew! Quality reading. VG, light wear. Please note: we offer a group of 6 more travel diaries of Mrs. Flint - see our entry a88029) (a82520) ...
You need not ask me to explain the piles of old restaurant menus and food ephemera loaded into boxes and bags in my closet, because each item is more than glad to tell its story. The 1920s candy wrapper with crumbs of ancient chocolate hiding in the creases or stained S.S. Lurline dinner card (to and from Hawaii) are straining to brag about their former flavors and who last sampled them. Vintage object are patient in the long run, but they ultimately demand total attention.. When I brought that candy wrapper home from the flea, it forced me to wet my finger, press it down, and lift a very few of the tiny brown specks to my mouth. Thrilling! The ghost of chocolate past. In the same way, I was compelled to read my hundreds of menus and labels and play a version of the catalog game, picking one thing from each Id most like to have.. The blackberry fried pie, crossed out in the unused glassine wrapper above, is no doubt better than the apple. Ill take it.. What would I order from Hackneys on ...
Description: [From Introduction]: For much of the last twenty-five years of his life, Butlers thought and work were not perceived to be current at all. His poetry was hardly read (whats new there? - neither is anyone elses); some of it lay in manuscript or obscure little publications until the Collected Poems appeared in 1999. The autobiographies attracted a loyal following amongst a small, educated reading public. His early dramas, though they met with initial success, were stifled by the poetic idiom to which they aspired, and by the racial claustrophobia against which they fought. (Demea, Butlers South African reworking of the Medea, made it to the boards only in 1990 - the multi-racial cast, let alone the themes, kept it in hibernation until then.) The deluge of journalism and polemic suffered the usual fate of ephemera. Until resurrected by Stephen Watson in 1990, the essays and lectures remained buried in periodicals where they could not be assessed as a totality. His inspiring ...

The recent announcement that Phono del Sol 2017 headliner Thee Oh Sees will now be known as Oh Sees likely generated, at most, acknowledging nods from most music fans, unless, of course, youre an Oh Sees super fan (like us), or happen to have just printed several thousand programs for an upcoming festival using the bands old name (like us). But while dropping Thee might not be a big deal, the bands new name offers another demarcating point to help navigate a remarkable two-decade run that has seen John Dwyer and bandmates release eighteen LPs and about a bazillion singles, EPs, and ephemera.. Orinoka Crash Suite began as a side project for Dwyer during the Pink and Brown/Coachwhips days, offering the musician an outlet to explore quieter psych and folk sounds. The early OCS albums functioned as a lab for sonic experimentation, yielding haunting gems like Second Date, from Songs About Death & Dying Vol. 3:. ...

The Boston University Art Gallery is pleased to present Todd Hido: Excerpts from Silver Meadows, organized by the Transformer Station in Cleveland, Ohio. The exhibition features over 100 of the internationally renowned photographers most recent works. Hidos work is cinematic in scope, and offers a darkly dramatic glimpse into a world that reflects both the alienation and dislocation of suburban America and the inspiration of noir film and literature. A major new monograph published by Nazraeli Press accompanies the exhibition. Named after the faded Midwestern suburb where Hido (a Kent, Ohio native) grew up, Excerpts from Silver Meadows represents the artists metaphorical reckoning with his own past. Boston Universitys presentation includes an installation of childhood snapshots, newspaper clippings and other ephemera that served as inspiration for the series, further revealing the artists trip through the innocence of childhood and adolescence and into the darker aspects of life beyond ...

A. Hyatt, Mayor, 78, the curatoremeritus of the department of prints and photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a man who tempered learning with wit, died Thursday at his home in New York City. He had pneumonia.. Mr. Mayor was hired in 1932 by Willia Mills Ivins Jr., the Metropolitians first curator of prints. He suceeded Ivins as curator in 1946 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1966. Items that Mr. Mayor added to the museums engravings and woodblocks by such masters as Rembrandt and Durer included wine labels, mail-order catalogues, which are useful as references on topics such as furniture, and one of the worlds finest collections of cigarette insert-cards and similar ephemera. He thought the cards, once cheap and easy to come by and now expensive and rare, attractive as well as interesting.. For several years after becoming curator-emeritus, Mr. Mayor assembled the pictures and wrote the texts for the museums annual Christmas calendars. Some editions sold ...
Recently going through my mayfly photographs I found a nice set of pictures from the Paflyfish Spring Jam in 2010. The Green Drake Ephemera guttulata hatch was in full swing that year and photographs of these mayflies was easy and plentiful. Most of the weekend was overcast and rain as normally forecasted for the Spring Jam. Emergers subimigo and spinners imago were not so much active during the day, but lined the sides of the streams in the hundreds of thousands. I am always torn between fishing and photography on days like this but glad put down my fly rod for a while and captured a lot of great shots. With so many mayflies and photos it was easy to get so nice shots of the Green Drake spinners, which are referred to as Coffin Flies because of their white extended body. I wanted to demonstrate the differences between spinner imago male and female. These two Coffin Flies attached show these differences. Most notably the male has longer extended fore legs and claspers at the rear of the
