The Seoul City government will conduct special monitoring activities on environmental pollution actions during the Chuseok holidays, the biggest festive holidays in Korea.. The Seoul City authority said on September 15 that it will intensify environmental pollution action monitoring activities through September 26 on regions and facilities that require close control, in 3 stages.. The measure is taken based on concerns over possible illegal emission of wastewater by pollutant emission facilities during Chuseok holidays when crackdown is loosened.. In the first stage, the City government will examine 139 companies and facilities, sending 26 two-member teams daily until September 17.. Regions, companies and facilities subject to special monitoring include regions around water supply sources, streams around factories and factory concentrated regions, companies that were imposed with administrative sanctions or those that caused water pollution accidents during the past 2 years, facilities that emit ...

Introduction. a) Explain the concepts of negative externalities b) Evaluate three policies that may be used by government to reduce external costs of production. An externality occurs when the production of a good or service has an effect upon a third party. There are 4 types of externalities: negative externalities of production, positive externalities of production, negative externalities of consumption and positive externalities of consumption. This paper shall examine the concepts of negative externalities of production. As I mentioned earlier, an externality occurs when the production of a good or service has an effect upon a third party. If the effect of an externality is harmful, then we are talking about a negative externality. A negative externality of production occurs when the production of a good or service creates external cost that are damaging to other third parties. ...read more. Middle. Wastefulness in the industrialized world. Many people in Japan and in wealthy North American and European nations have become accustomed to comfortable lifestyles that consume large amounts of energy and raw materials and produce many wastes. A person living in an industrialized nation uses about 10 times the amount of fossil fuels and electric power and produces 2 to 3 times as much municipal waste as a person in a developing country. For a true reduction in pollution, people in the industrialized world would probably have to accept less convenience and luxury in their lives. Solving the problems of global environmental pollution will require the cooperation of governments and industry in all countries, rich and poor, as well as the efforts of individuals all over the world.. ...
Downloadable! We explore the impact of geographical proximity of environmental problems on environmental concern and willingness to pay (WTP) for environmental improvement, with emphasis on the relevance of Ingleharts postmaterialism thesis on this inquiry. A questionnaire was administered to 1565 respondents in Istanbul. The Contingent Valuation Method was used to measure WTP. Sea pollution in Istanbul (local issue), soil erosion in Turkey (national issue) and ozone depletion (global issue) were issues chosen for valuation. The sample was separated into three sub-samples, each being presented with only one issue. Individuals distinguish between local and global environmental concern. People with materialist values rather than postmaterialist values exhibit more concern for local environmental problems. However, postmaterialist values determine WTP for improvement in both the local and the global environmental problems. Distinguishing among concern for environmental issues, which are differentiated on

Our research shows that increased environmental awareness and investments in China over the past decade have produced results, says Chen.. Economic growth has come at a high price. In the late 1970s Chinas economy began expanding, and the expansion accelerated during the following decades. Environmental pollution kept pace with economic growth.. But the analysis of our data shows a weakening of that relationship for China starting in 1995, Chen says.. Researchers have studied statistics for economic growth, environmental conditions, regional differences, the gap between urban and rural areas, social inequality, land-based impacts on the ocean, equality in education, health care and living standards in China during the 1977-2017 period. The research results are based on huge amounts of big data.. In our study we have looked at the data from all areas based on the UNs 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As researchers, we normally tend to look at our own data, but in this study, we ...

Have you ever noticed that when youre in the country, there seems to be more stars in the night sky than when youre in the city? The stars are still there, you just arent able to see them due to the presence of other light from things like buildings, cars and streelights. The inaugural Dark Skies Conference, held on June 1 at Carnegie Mellon University, seeks to educate people about the harms of light pollution, and how to go about remedying it.

It is thought that germ cells and preimplantation embryos during development are most susceptible to endogenous and exogenous environmental factors because the epigenome in those cells is undergoing dramatic elimination and reconstruction. Exposure to environmental factors such as nutrition, climate, stress, pathogens, toxins, and even social behavior during gametogenesis and early embryogenesis has been shown to influence disease susceptibility in the offspring. Early-life epigenetic modifications, which determine the expression of genetic information stored in the genome, are viewed as one of the general mechanisms linking prenatal exposure and phenotypic changes later in life. From atmospheric pollution, endocrine-disrupting chemicals to heavy metals, research increasingly suggests that environmental pollutions have already produced significant consequences on human health. Moreover, mounting evidence now links such pollution to relevant modification in the epigenome. The epigenetics diet, referring
The main purposes of the study were to clarify the conceptual reference of environmental awareness and to investigate the relationship between some individual, socio-economic factors and awareness to environmental issues. In addition, the factors that affect the environmental awareness were also determined. Face to face interviews were done with 975 individuals 25 cities were chosen throughout Turkey, which means at least 2 cities from each region. The models were estimated by the ordered logistic regression. Environmental awareness were evaluated from the standpoints of water, air and soil. Among the pollution categories, people were mostly aware of the pollution in air. In policies related to converting sensitivity to environment to action the Turkish government and institutions should take into account gender, education, income, age, industrial city and number of information source. Welcome to this weeks Wednesday Workshop! This week well explore the impact of light pollution and how Groveland is approaching Dark Sky initiatives in new communities.. From religion to agriculture, early human societies based their entire livelihoods on the patterns of the stars. Yet today, stars in most cities are barely visible due to light pollution, an unfavorable byproduct of artificial light. In fact, 99% of Americans live under anthropogenic skyglow, a phenomenon in which electric lighting illuminates a naturally dark sky.. Light pollution has devastating effects on human health and animal behaviors. Artificial, nocturnal light (especially with high blue light content) disrupts the production of the hormone melatonin, which plays an integral role in the circadian rhythm, thus causing sleep deprivation, fatigue, and other health problems. In the natural world, artificial light confuses the sleeping habits, migration patterns, and habitat formations of wildlife, particularly birds and ...

Shortly thereafter, two surveys were conducted by environmental health professionals. One was an actual survey of the physical conditions existing within the selected area and the second an informational study of the opinions and attitudes of the population. The survey area was 60 city blocks made up of three-story houses with multiple residences, owned by absentee landlords. These houses which had been homes for a single family of six to nine people, now housed six apartments with 50-60 people. The surveys were used: to determine the existence and level of rodent infestation within the communities; to determine in a more precise manner the number of rat bites that were occurring within a calendar year; and the interest of the citizens to work together to remove food sources and harborage and destroy a good portion of the rodent population. A huge amount of infestation was found along with substantial harborage and rodent entrances into houses. The number of rat bites reported to the ...

The fuel consumption of vehicles is an important part of environmental impact and we are committed to purchasing the most environmentally friendly vehicles possible. Councils Motor Vehicle Code of Practice includes an environmental component which states that the we will progressively shift the motor vehicle fleet to cleaner and more environmentally appropriate vehicles. This shift focuses specifically on the type of fuel used and on fuel economy.. Council has downsized the vehicles in its fleet, and has purchased a number of fuel efficient vehicles and vehicles using alternative fuels to standard unleaded petrol. In the last few years, the number of vehicles using diesel has significantly increased due to their efficiency and longevity compared to other fuel types. This will ultimately result in a reduction in the quantity of fuel used and greenhouse gas emissions generated.. ...
Today, pollution is occurring on a vast and unprecedented scale around the globe. The Executive Chairman of Apapa Local Government, Hon. Adele Elijah Owolabi, has urged residents and those transacting business within his domain to take seriously the proper disposal of refuse, just as he flags-off KACHAM corps.. Explaining that this was in view of the filthy environment and the attendant negative effect on commerce, the council boss said while kick starting the new initiative, Keep Apapa Clean and Healthy, A Must (KACHAM) Corps, was to forestall indiscriminate dumping of refuse evident within Apapa.. Adele cited the fact that the drive for the initiative was borne out of the huge economic loss that dirt and filth riddled environment may bring Apapa blessed by two seaports situated there.. While calling for the cooperation of the peoples of the community with government, Adele said he established the KACHAM CORPS to enforce the cleanliness culture, along with 25 units of Branded Waste Bins to be placed in different strategic points, as well as the Cleaner Apapa Squad ...
A large number of policy initiatives are being taken at the European level, across the United Kingdom and in London to improve air quality and reduce population exposure to harmful pollutants from traffic emissions. Trends in roadside increments of nitrogen oxides (NOX), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter (PM), black carbon (CBLK) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were examined at 65 London monitoring sites for two periods of time: 2005-2009 and 2010-2014. Between 2005 and 2009 there was an overall increase in NO2 reflecting the growing evidence of real world emissions from diesel vehicles. ...

Pollution is … unused raw material. By reducing the amount of pollution, … [3M can] save money both on pollution control and on raw materials the next time around. Its a win-win situation So said Dr Joe Ling, 3Ms former Staff Vice President, Environmental Engineering and Pollution Control back in 1975. He was arguably the first individual to articulate the concept of pollution prevention.. It seems common place to us today, but back in the early 1970s, Joes belief that pollution prevention was more environmentally effective, technically sound and - crucially - economical than conventional pollution controls was considered revolutionary. In 1976, Dr. Ling first presented his ideas at a conference sponsored by the United Nations. Shortly after, he was approached by the director of the United Nations Environmental Program to develop a booklet explaining these theories for distribution to UN member nations and countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Sweden went on to adopt ...
Our first obligation at EPA is to fulfill the statutory responsibilities we have been given by Congress. That generally means developing environmental standards through regulation, and ensuring compliance through a system of permits inspections, and enforcement actions. I firmly believe that strong environmental requirements, if designed to encourage cost-effective compliance strategies from industry, can promote pollution prevention and improve the competitiveness of American industry.. We can take a number of actions to realize this potential. First, we must work within the law to design and implement our regulations to provide incentives for source reduction. That will mean better coordination of different regulations that affect the same industry to reduce transaction costs, minimize cross-media transfers of waste, and provide a clearer sense of our long-term goals for the regulated community.. EPAs Source Reduction Review Project (SRRP), which is exploring how best to encourage pollution ...

Global Environmental Issues, second edition builds on the popularity of the first edition, viewing global environmental problems as complex issues with a network of causes, influenced by a range of actors with differing priorities. The book recognises that science underpins much of what happens in society and therefore it is important to be able to interpret the environmental and social consequences of scientific developments. In addition to discussing the main biophysical causes, the book illustrates how socio-economic and political factors determine why and how people use land, resources and technology, and how this in turn affects natural resource management. This edition includes new chapters on the politics of science, International environmental regulation and treaties, environmental issues in a globalised world and natural resource management.. Global Environmental Issues, second edition is essential reading for upper level undergraduates and Masters students within departments of ...
Based on the mechanism model of environmental pollution loss of pollutants, Logistic equation and related theory of environmental value, an economic loss estimation model of environmental pollution was established. The model can not only reflect the relationship between pollutant concentration, pollutant emissions, environmental resource value and economic value loss, but also use this model to quantitatively reflect the damage caused by environmental pollution to the value of environmental resources. The model is used to estimate the economic loss caused by industrial water pollution in a certain area. The comparison between the estimated amount and the results calculated by econometric method shows that the evaluation results are relatively consistent, but the former is slightly larger ...
Environmental issues in Pakistan include deforestation, air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, climate change, pesticide misuse, soil erosion, natural disasters and desertification. These are serious environmental problems that Pakistan is facing, and they are getting worse as the countrys economy expands and the population grows. Unfortunately, not much is being done to tackle these issues, because the goals of economic growth and tackling terrorism within the country supersede the goals of environmental preservation. Although NGOs and government departments have taken initiatives to stop environmental degradation, Pakistans environmental issues still remain. The majority of Pakistans industrial sectors, for example fishing and agriculture, which count for more than one fourth of the output and two fifths of employment in Pakistan, are highly dependent on the countrys natural resources. Hence in order to sustain economic growth there is a high demand on already scarce natural ...
Real time measurement of process emissions is important for undertaking rational pollution prevention and risk reduction strategies. The selective measurement of gaseous species, usually at trace levels, in a complex background mixture is of particular concern because many toxic pollutants are present at parts per trillion (ppt) to parts per million (ppm) levels in process effluents. Consequently there is a growing need for the development of highly sensitive and selective techniques to continuously monitor the concentrations of a broad range of compounds. In this proposal we would like to exploit recent advances made in resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) and time of flight (TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) for the development of real time and ultrasensitive detection techniques to monitor a wide range of molecules in the gas phase. An important and challenging chemical reaction process where the REMPI-TOF/MS should have a major impact is in combustion. This is because combustion of ...

Using photographs from the ISS, scientist have measured worldwide light pollution, using light from buildings and streets, but also scattered light. The results confirm this glow is light scattered from streetlights and buildings and is responsible for brightening city night skies. European countries with higher public debt were also found to have higher relative energy consumption for street lighting, and cost of energy consumption for street lights is 6,300 million euros/year in the EU.
Last Sunday, people all over the Shenandoah valley turned out to their porches and yards to view the supermoon eclipse. The event was also broadcast by NASA in a livestream feed. Its heartening to see, especially in a day and age when people are more interested in the little screens at the end of their fingers than in the world around them.. Unfortunately, the supermoon lunar eclipse was a pale echo of what it could have been. The reason is light pollution - the artificial lights from buildings, streetlights and elsewhere that we see every night. This reflected light washes out the natural darkness of the sky, making it impossible to see all but the brightest stars. There are very few places in the U.S. that one can actually see the Milky Way clearly, and theres likely to be fewer as time goes on.. Most of this light is unnecessary - streetlights that direct some light upward, skyscrapers with full lighting at night, and overlapping floodlights are some examples. Not only is this costly, it ...

By the early 2000s, Peru faced serious environmental problems. Air pollution in urban areas was so severe that it caused thousands of premature deaths every year. In fact, air quality in Lima was worse than in other large Latin American cities, such as Mexico City or Sao Paulo. Other environmental challenges that damaged peoples health included air pollution inside homes caused by the use of wood for cooking; insufficient access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene; and exposure to lead, a highly toxic chemical. Together, these environmental problems caused 12 million cases of illnesses annually, dramatically affecting young children, the elderly, and poor people who couldnt afford medical care. The World Bank estimated that these negative impacts had an economic cost equivalent to 2.8% of Perus Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2003. One of the main reasons the Peruvian government wasnt able to respond promptly to these serious environmental problems was the country didnt have governmental
There is a lack of environmental health data in Africa, which is undergoing rapid development. The SA-Swiss Bilateral Research Chair in Global Environmental Health therefore aims to conduct locally and globally relevant studies in this setting. Project 1 included a cohort study that investigated the effects of chemical and biological air pollution on childhood asthma in four informal settlements of the Western Cape, South Africa. Project 2 is a cohort study investigating the effects of pesticide pollution on childhood reproduction and neurodevelopment. Project 3 include two cross-sectional surveys on the effect of water pollution and hygiene on diarrhoea among residents of informal settlements in the Lotus River catchment area in the Western Cape. Project 4 aims to investigate the effect of climate change on health. In the panel study, short-term fungal spore exposure was found to significantly decrease lung function even beyond the day of exposure. In the air pollution cohort study, nitrogen ...
The fact that environmental issues, which cause a significant externality within global goods, have gained a global dimension, necessitated more concrete steps for challenging with environmental issues. At this point, efforts to reduce environmental issues and protect the environment have been on the axis of sustainability. This book contains theoretical and empirical researches written by academicians and researches in the field of environment and sustainability. In the contributions, the macro dimensions of environmental pollution such as economic growth, health sector and technological development are examined. In addition to these, the contributors deal with micro dimensions such as consumption, marketing, accounting and firm behavior both in theory and empirically.. ...

Greenhouse gases are gases that retain heat in the atmosphere. This created something called the greenhouse effect. It is normal function of our Earth. There are naturally occurring greenhouse emissions into the atmosphere like carbon dioxide. This happens through normal and natural processes and human activities. You might be surprised to find out that there are more greenhouse gases than all that carbon dioxide stuff youve been hearing about. There are some greenhouse gases that are only emitted by human activities such as fluorinated gases.. Greenhouse gases that release into the atmosphere due to human induced exploits include:. Carbon Dioxide (CO2): The most well known of the greenhouse gases, youve typically heard about carbon dioxide from a Greenpeace advocate, the weatherman, or on from some liberal news anchor. Whatever your thoughts are on climate change, science clearly tells us that carbon dioxide goes into our atmosphere from the process of burning fossil fuels. The main fossil ...
Environmental magnetic methods based on the study of variations in magnetic susceptibility and rock magnetic parameters have been successfully used over several decades to characterize and quantify the degree of pollution of air, water, vegetation and land systems. These prompted us to undertake joint magnetic and geochemical investigations of road-side urban soil materials to address the environmental pollution of Beni Mellal city that has been subjected to environmental stress, due to population overpressure and related urbanization.. In order to quantify the degree of environmental pollution using magnetic method, magnetic susceptibility of soil and sediment out-side and along 5 km of the national road N8 (formally named 20 aout) has been measured. All samples collected near roads have higher values of magnetic susceptibility and heavy metals (especially Pb) contents that those collected far from roads. These results show that both ferrimagnetic minerals and heavy metals come from the same ...
Human action in fulfillment of their daily activities, inadvertently have increased the number of inorganic materials in water and pollute water. For example, removal of the detergent into the water can adversely impact on aquatic organisms. Paddy soil fertilization with artificial fertilizers or farm, then went into the water will cause the growth of aquatic plants that are not controlled, called eutrophication or blooming. Some types of plants such as algae, water hyacinth spikes and will grow rapidly and cover the surface of the waters so that sunlight does not penetrate to the bottom waters. As a result, plants that are under the surface can not photosynthesize, so the levels of dissolved oxygen in water decreases ...

In this study, the influence of lead (II) ions on sunflower growth and biochemistry was investigated from various points of view. Sunflower plants were treated with 0, 10, 50, 100 and/or 500 µM Pb-EDTA for eight days. We observed alterations in growth in all experimental groups compared with non-treated control plants. Further we determined total content of proteins by a Bradford protein assay. By the eighth day of the experiment, total protein contents in all treated plants were much lower compared to control. Particularly noticeable was the loss of approx. 8 µg/mL or 15 µg/mL in shoots or roots of plants treated with 100 mM Pb-EDTA. We also focused our attention on the activity of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and urease. Activity of the enzymes increased with increasing length of the treatment and applied concentration of lead (II) ions. This increase corresponds well with a higher metabolic activity of treated plants. Contents of cysteine, reduced glutathione (GSH),
