Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are organic compounds that are resistant to environmental degradation through chemical, biological, and photolytic processes. Because of their persistence, POPs bioaccumulate with potential adverse impacts on human health and the environment. The effect of POPs on human and environmental health was discussed, with intention to eliminate or severely restrict their production, by the international community at the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in 2001. Many POPs are currently or were in the past used as pesticides, solvents, pharmaceuticals, and industrial chemicals. Although some POPs arise naturally, for example volcanoes and various biosynthetic pathways, most are man-made via total synthesis. LETTER , In July 2018, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of valsartan, an antihypertensive angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), because of contamination with a cancer-causing nitrosamine, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). Initially affecting only one Chinese factory, the recall has been expanded and emulated by other regulatory bodies affecting companies and factories all over the world. In March 2019, the Singapore Health Ministry estimated that 137,000 patients have been affected by the recall of another ARB called losartan, while the Malaysian deputy minister of health has had to issue a public call for patients not to panic over the losartan recall. The list of drugs recalled by the US FDA now extends to over 1,090 entries. The chemical contaminant at the heart of the problem is also found in food especially processed meats, milk and fish. BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a major threat to public health in the United States and worldwide. Understanding the role of environmental chemicals in the development or progression of diabetes is an emerging issue in environmental health. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the epidemiologic literature for evidence of associations between persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Using a PubMed search and reference lists from relevant studies or review articles, we identified 72 epidemiological studies that investigated associations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with diabetes. We evaluated these studies for consistency, strengths and weaknesses of study design (including power and statistical methods), clinical diagnosis, exposure assessment, study population characteristics, and identification of data gaps and areas for future research. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and hydroxylated PCBs (OH-PCBs) were investigated in human adipose tissue samples collected from 20 women undergoing surgery. Mean sum of PCB and sum of OH-PCB levels were 737ng/g of lipid and 8pg/g of lipid, respectively. Among PCBs, congeners 180, 153, 138 and 170 were the most frequent and abundant, and together constituted 72% of the total amount of PCBs in adipose tissue. The PCB congener pattern and the frequencies and concentrations of non-dioxin-like and non-hydroxylated congeners observed in adipose tissue were similar in distribution and order of magnitude to the profile previously published in Spain but lower than that found in other European countries. Among OH-PCB congeners studied, 4-OH-PCB 107/118 was found at the highest concentrations followed by 3-OH-PCB 180 and 3-OH-PCB 138. The following hypotheses were tested: i) Multimedia fate models can be applied in a multistage assessment process to emerging chemicals when limited knowledge exists to identify the likely environmental fate and to direct further research; ii) the indoor environment acts as a source of anthropogenic substances in consumer products to the outdoor environment; and iii) chemical removal pathways in the indoor environment are important for the fate of organic chemicals in densely populated areas.. The aim was to study, not only the effect of single contaminants on the catalyst performance, but also of possible interaction effects between poisons. The effect of six potential catalyst poisons (Na, K, Mg, P, S and Zn) was evaluated using an experimental design and multivariate data analysis. Monolithic V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalysts were subjected to accelerated laboratory-scale aging, where the six contaminants were fed simultaneously using a wet impregnation method. In addition to NO conversion tests, the catalysts were characterized by means of ICP-OES, SEM-EDX, XPS, N-2 physisorption and NH3-TPD. The lab-aged samples were compared to fresh and vehicle-aged catalysts. Despite growing awareness of the role of environmental pollutants in the development of cardiovascular disease, the field of chemical atherogenesis can broadly include both exogenous and endogenous poisons and the study of molecular, biochemical, and cellular pathways that become dysregulated during atherosclerosis. This integrated approach is logical because exogenous and endogenous toxins often share the same mechanism of toxicity. Chemical atherogenesis is a truly integrative discipline because it incorporates concepts from several different fields, including biochemistry, chemical biology, pharmacology, and toxicology. This review will provide an overview of this emerging research area, focusing on cellular and animal models of disease.
