When constructing cost-effective buildings, it is easy to forget that the success or failure of a project may rest on its indoor environmental quality (IEQ). Healthy, comfortable employees are often more satisfied and productive. Unfortunately, this simple truth is often lost, for it is easier to focus on the first-cost of a project than it is to determine the value of increased user productivity and health. Salary expenses are generally a high proportion of the operational expenses of a building. Even a small percentage gain in productivity, multiplied by the number of employees, can result in considerable savings. Facilities should be constructed with an appreciation of the importance of providing high-quality, interior environments for all users.. As a species, we have progressed from an outdoor hunter-gatherer existence to one where 90% of the typical Americans life is spent indoors. Many of us have adapted to the indoor realm as our natural environment.. IEQ encompasses indoor air ...
BACKGROUND: People in modern societies spend more than 90% of their time indoors. Hence, indoor environmental quality (IEQ) has a significant impact on public health. In this article we describe health risks associated with indoor environments, illuminate barriers to overcoming these risks, and provide policy recommendations to achieve healthier indoor environments. OBJECTIVES: The weight of evide

The Health Hazard Evaluation Program received a request from a union representing employees at an elementary school because of concerns about possible exposure to mold in the school building. In 2014, some elementary school employees went on medical leave reportedly because of illness from mold exposure after receiving results from fungal immunoglobulin G (IgG) blood tests and urine mycotoxin tests. Knowledge of these results prompted over 20 additional school employees to have their blood tested for IgG to fungi. Some of these employees and their physicians interpreted their blood test results as meaning they had high levels of mold in their bodies. Other employees had recurring upper respiratory and sinus infections and throat and eye irritation that they attributed to their work environment. During our evaluation, we (1) checked for moisture, water damage, and mold inside the building and in the crawl spaces beneath the building, (2) evaluated the ventilation systems, (3) measured carbon ...
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a new zoonotic agent that emerged in December 2019, causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This infection can be spread by asymptomatic, presymptomatic, and symptomatic carriers. SARS-CoV-2 spreads primarily via respiratory droplets during close person-to-person contact in a closed space, especially a building. This article summarizes the environmental factors involved in SARS-CoV-2 transmission, including a strategy to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission in a building environment. SARS-CoV-2 can persist on surfaces of fomites for at least 3 days depending on the conditions. If SARS-CoV-2 is aerosolized intentionally, it is stable for at least several hours. SARS-CoV-2 is inactivated rapidly on surfaces with sunlight. Close-contact aerosol transmission through smaller aerosolized particles is likely to be combined with respiratory droplets and contact transmission in a confined, crowded, and poorly ventilated indoor environment, as

Increasing efforts are devoted to enhance and optimize the environmental comfort in buildings, as this aspect plays a major role in the affection of health, performance and general well-being of people. Indoor air quality, acoustic ambience, light and thermal conditions have been proved to be fundamental factors for the indoor environmental quality. Engineers must be aware of the effects of the interactions between these factors on the indoor comfort as people react simultaneously to diverse stimuli belonging to different sensorial fields and adapting their behaviors according to the associated conditions. Being able to know how these interactions influence the users comfort can lead to marked energy savings and positive influence on users productivity. Many studies have been conducted on the influence of each component on the overall comfort, but only few studies are available investigating the interaction between different comfort variables of different disciplines. This research focuses on the

With the increased focus on providing daylight and views for building occupants and improved indoor environmental quality (e.g. thermal comfort, air quality), as well as reducing energy consumption, a significant tension has been created around the design of the building envelope. While the use of highly glazed façades allows for sufficient daylight and views, they can also create thermal comfort issues for occupants near them, condensation issues because of cold interior surfaces (which can become breeding grounds for mould), and reduce the overall thermal performance of the façade (since walls are in general more insulating than windows). However, with the right design using daylight harvesting and high performance fenestration, an envelope system can be designed which is more energy efficient than an opaque wall [1], and thermal comfort and condensation issues can be overcome. Indeed, the US DOE has stated that the net zero envelope design is one that has fenestration with very low U-factor ...

As stated before, a genuinely allergic response - ( IgE mediated response), is a feature of some with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity in regards to allergy or sensitization to one or more SPECIFIC allergens & this would certainly be detected with a relevant challenge test (eg. Skin-prick test). The widely reported & previously described effects whereby a sensitivity to multiple toxicants or irritants is experienced (spreading) -would almost certainly NOT show a true allergic response to all of these multiple toxicants, but nevertheless, we are led to believe in the veracity of these statements of problems: because of the obvious sincerity of the very many Multiple Chemical Sensitivity - environmental illness sufferers with whom we have had dealings over the years. because of the common threads that run between them - ie. many sufferers tell the same stories albeit in a different way. because of the well-documented phenomenon of cross-reaction in true allergy, whereby a person with an allergy ...

Jiang released a video presentation and lecture in June titled MCS: Past Present Future - A Global Perspective. Jiangs mental health blog defines MCS, Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a chronic medical condition and syndrome characterized by symptoms that the affected person attributes to low-level chemical exposures to commonly used chemicals. Commonly attributed substances include scented products, pesticides, plastics, synthetic fabrics, smoke, petroleum products, and paint fumes.. The American Medical Association does not currently consider Multiple Chemical Sensitivity an illness.. According to WebMD, which lists MCS in ...
By and large, it would be true and fair to say that multiple chemical sensitivity, however caused, is inextricably linked to the prevalence of modern, synthetic TOXIC chemicals. These toxic chemicals are all around us. Even if a Physical initialization or one due to a Natural material (eg. wood dust ), was the origin of the problem, cross-reactions (generalization), as discussed previously will usually or often mean that the multiple chemical sensitivity sufferer will become sensitive to a breadth of toxic synthetic chemicals which are difficult if not impossible to avoid in a modern setting. It is often the case that for the average healthy individual , the toxic chemical in question poses no significant health risk but that to the multiple chemical sensitivity sufferer, that same dose of chemical can cause all manner of unpleasant or even dangerous symptoms. The healthy individual is not affected because -. they are not allergic or sensitized to that toxin. the toxin is present at a ...
Fighting multiple chemical sensitivity and searching for a safe home. Community - September 25, 2012 12:01 am. For Lou Anne Cottingham, finding the right home is more complicated than just finding the right neighborhood or number of bedrooms.. Cottingham has searched for a home in Hamilton County since at least last year to no avail. Cottingham has a disorder called multiple chemical sensitivity, adding a whole new level of difficulty to house hunting.. Cottingham started her fight with the disorder 26-and-a-half years ago and wants the community to know it impacts many people, including those who are educated.. There are so many people who are homeless with this illness, Cottingham said, and its not known because they dont go through the normal circa of homeless people.. Multiple chemical sensitivity is a disorder that is activated by exposures to toxic materials or irritants, such as mold. As a person is exposed multiple times, he becomes more and more sensitive to the source, spreading ...

MCS is a devastating illness that makes it difficult to live in our modern world. Its hard to imagine that everyday household items like cleaning products and perfume can make you sick, but for people with MCS, virtually everything in their homes can trigger reactions, says Debra Lynn Dadd, consumer advocate.. For MCS AwarenessMonth in May 2017, Debra has teamed up with EnviroKlenz, a manufacturer of nontoxic deodorizing products, to share how she recovered from MCS. She has outlined her process in How to Recover from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) and Other Environmental Illnesses.. Debra Lynn Dadd was one of the first to be diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), an immune system disorder that results in becoming sensitive to all types of products that are made from petrochemicals. Debra was diagnosed in 1978 when MCS was just becoming known. Because there were no resources at the time, she wrote and published her first book in 1982 to explain MCS medically and give ...

Although this explanation may not fully apply to multiple chemical sensitivity, undoubtedly the discriminating physician must include the impact of psychosocial elements when evaluating these patients.. In addition to the numerous chemical, hormonal, immunologic and neurologic assessments performed by the clinical ecologists, a new objective tool has been added to their armamentarium-the single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scan. During the past five years, we have seen a growing percentage of patients with previously diagnosed multiple chemical sensitivity or a similar diagnosis who had undergone SPECT scans. All of the results in these patients were positive, with the most common diagnosis being chemically induced toxic encephalopathy.. Fincher and colleagues4 report their experience with SPECT scans in 25 patients with mixed solvent exposure. All of these patients had positive results. However, even a superficial review of the article reveals numerous technical and procedural ...
Medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS or MUS) are symptoms for which a treating physician or other healthcare providers have found no medical cause, or whose cause remains contested.[1] In its strictest sense, the term simply means that the cause for the symptoms is unknown or disputed-there is no scientific consensus. Not all medically unexplained symptoms are influenced by identifiable psychological factors.[2] However, in practice, most physicians and authors who use the term consider that the symptoms most likely arise from psychological causes. Typically, the possibility that MUPS are caused by prescription drugs or other drugs is ignored.[3] It is estimated that between 15% and 30% of all primary care consultations are for medically unexplained symptoms.[4] A large Canadian community survey revealed that the most common medically unexplained symptoms are musculoskeletal pain, ear, nose, and throat symptoms, abdominal pain and gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, and dizziness.[4] ...

Buildings and their related activities are responsible for a large portion of the energy consumed in China. It is therefore worthwhile to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. This paper describes a low energy building design in Hangzhou, south China. A hybrid ventilation system which employs both natural and mechanical ventilation was used for the building due to the severity of the climate. The passive ventilation system was tested using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the results showed that, in the mid-seasons, natural ventilation for the building is viable. The likely thermal performance of the building design throughout the year was evaluated using Dynamic Thermal Simulation (DTS) with local hourly standard weather data. It is concluded that the hybrid ventilation system is a feasible, low energy approach for building design, even in subtropical climates such as south China.. ...

The following is a personal account of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity by a member of South London Solidarity Federation. The author has made some additional points in response to comments which are included in the addendum below.. MCS is an adverse reaction to airborne chemicals, such as air fresheners, solvents, and scented cleaning products. Symptoms vary from nose and throat irritation, fatigue and headaches to full-blown immune system overload. It can be triggered by a one off or severe exposure to chemicals, pesticides or other toxins and become a long-term susceptibility to the low levels of exposure now common in many public spaces.. In 2016 campaigning in the UK succeeded in getting MCS recognised as a health condition, as an aspect of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. One possible reason for the reluctance of the UK authorities to acknowledge MCS was the number of Gulf War veterans who returned to the UK with MCS and other symptoms. Research and campaigning has been stronger in the USA. The US ...

I was in the depths of despair when I first started working with Jane Fecteau in mid-October 2006. I had had a near complete systemic shut-down after a medical treatment to address one of the underlying causes of my rare auto-immune syndrome. I was unable to eat, unable to have bowel movements, and unable to sleep more than moments at a time.. The pain that I was experiencing throughout my body was intense, unbearable and debilitating.. Five days after working twice a day with Jane, I was able to sleep for five hours, my ability to digest foods and eliminate returned and after four months of intensive work, my health, on all levels, physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual has miraculously improved. I continue to need to work with Jane. This doesnt surprise me considering the number of health issues that I have, including: auto-immune syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, a wide range of food intolerances, high blood pressure and toxic overload, to name a few.. I am so grateful to have ...

in reply: The juxtaposition of the two letters by Dr. McCampbell and Drs. Fung and Kennon illustrates the controversy associated with the phenomenon of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS).. In her letter, Dr. McCampbell implies that most physicians are victims of a sophisticated disinformation campaign that is being waged by the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Dr. McCampbell currently chairs the MCS Task Force of New Mexico.. Last fall, a draft report issued by the Federal Interagency Workgroup on MCS was released for public comment.1 The Workgroup found that no single, accepted case definition of MCS has been established and that proposed definitions all differ in key criteria. The Workgroup noted that MCS is currently a symptom-based diagnosis without laboratory tests to support it or agreed on clinical manifestations. Although a patient can have disabling symptoms, objective clinical or laboratory evidence of disease is often lacking. It is doubtful that the distinguished members of ...

Sometimes I forget how ill I really was. A blessing for sure!. I am revisiting my multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), toxicant induced loss of tolerance (TILT), environmental illness (EI), chronic fatigue (CF), multiple food allergies, irritable bowel, depression, seasonal affected disorder (SAD), stress sensitization and spasmodic dysphonia diagnoses today. I am often reminded about how severely ill and affected I was by these conditions when I get inquires from all over the world asking for help from those still suffering.. All of the preceding diagnoses (plus more) were given to me in the past. I suffered severely for many years and I now have good health and feel good. I can eat all foods and feel save in many environments, avoiding toxic environments as everyone should.. On my journey to good health I tried many strategies, always looking for the cure. Like many people I read every article about the latest supplement and cures and spent a lot of money on trying them. From todays view ...
Diseases caused by pollution lead to the deaths of about 8.4 million people each year. However, pollution receives a fraction of the interest from the global community. This is in part because pollution causes so many diseases that is it often difficult to draw a straight line between cause and effect. There are many different types of pollution-related diseases, including those caused by air pollution, contaminated soil and water, sanitation and hygiene. Environmental diseases are a direct result from the environment. This includes diseases caused by substance abuse, exposure to toxic chemicals, and physical factors in the environment, like UV radiation from the sun, as well as genetic predisposition. Meanwhile, pollution-related diseases are attributed to exposure to toxins in the air, water, and soil. Therefore, all pollution-related disease are environmental diseases, but not all environmental diseases are pollution-related diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air ...

Jetstar, which is the airline Ive been using to get around Australia runs these cheap Friday Fare Frenzy sales - you have to be able to match the times they offer for, but my trip to Tasmania only cost me $39 Australian - and I had two nights in a different Pod Inn booked in the town of Launceston. My seat mate on the plane provided me with plenty of recommendations of what to see and do while I was there.. One of the key things he let me know was that everything closes at 3pm in Launceston on a Sunday. After catching a hotel shuttle from the airport, I confirmed this. It felt like a ghost town. The Pod Inn in Launceston was an upgrade from the Space Q pods in Sydney, but I think I will avoid pods in the future none the less - Ill write about that in my Aussie Pod Review though.. In any event, my arrival in Launceston was easy - although there was a ...

Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) plays a key role in determining occupants productivity at work; however, the analyses in the interconnected factors among building physical, attitudinal, social and demographic components in one study are lacking. To link this research gap, this study investigates these interconnected factors influence on occupants IEQ-productivity belief, defined as personal subjective evaluation on the linkage between the impacts of five IEQ aspects (the qualities of indoor temperature, air, natural and electric lighting and acoustics) and productivity. A cross-sectional survey data is collected in university offices from six countries (Brazil, Italy, Poland, Switzerland, Taiwan and the U.S.). Results of multiple linear regression model indicate that IEQ satisfaction is the strongest positive predictor of the IEQ-productivity belief; this relationship is stronger in private offices. Country of residence is the second primary predictor. Several attitudinal-behavioral ...
