The North East England devolution referendum was an all postal ballot referendum that took place on 4 November 2004 throughout North East England on whether or not to establish an elected assembly for the region. Devolution referendums in the regions of Northern England were initially proposed under provisions of the Regional Assemblies (Preparations) Act 2003. Initially, three referendums were planned, but only one took place. The votes concerned the question of devolving limited political powers from the UK Parliament to elected regional assemblies in North East England, North West England and Yorkshire and the Humber respectively. Each were initially planned to be held on 4 November 2004, but on 22 July 2004 the planned referendums in North West England and in Yorkshire and the Humber were postponed, due to concerns raised about the use of postal ballots, but the referendum in North East England was allowed to continue, particularly as it was assumed that the region held the most support for ...

The First World War was the turning point for the economy of Northern England. In the interwar years, the Northern economy began to be eclipsed by the South - in 1913-1914, unemployment in "outer Britain" (the North, plus Scotland and Wales) was 2.6% while the rate in Southern England was more than double that at 5.5%, but in 1937 during the Great Depression the outer British unemployment rate was 16.1% and the Southern rate was less than half that at 7.1%.[104] The weakening economy and interwar unemployment caused several episodes of social unrest in the region, including the 1926 general strike and the Jarrow March. The Great Depression highlighted the weakness of Northern Englands specialised economy: as world trade declined, demand for ships, steel, coal and textiles all fell.[105] For the most part, Northern factories were still using nineteenth-century technology, and were not able to keep up with advances in industries such as motors, chemicals and electricals, while the expansion of ...

Results The estimated proportion of TB cases in northern England attributable to localised transmission was 10% (95% CI 9% to 12%). Clustered cases (cases which were spatiotemporally clustered with others of identical genotype) were on average younger than non-clustered cases (mean age 34 years vs 43 years; p value ,0.05). Being UK born (adjusted OR (aOR) 3.6, 95% CI 2.9 to 6.0), presenting with pulmonary disease (aOR 2.2, 95% CI 1.3 to 3.6) and history of homelessness (aOR 2.8, 95% CI 1.2 to 6.8) or incarceration (aOR 2.6, 95% CI 1.2 to 5.9) were independently associated with being part of a spatiotemporal-genotypical cluster in a multivariable model. Belonging to an ethnic group other than white or mixed/other was also significantly associated with localised transmission. We identified localised transmission in 103/1958 middle super output areas mostly in urban areas. ...

During the period April 2014 to March 2015, 9 new CAPs were established in the LAAAs - bringing to 12 the total number of CAPs in the LAAAs. The LAAA project gave fresh impetus to new CAP development. At the beginning of the project there were three existing CAPs in LAAAs - Hastings, Gravesham, Wigan (part of Greater Manchester) - and at the end of the project there were a total of 12 CAPs in LAAAs. CAP continues to work with the "Social Responsibility Alliance" to support roll-out of additional new CAPs and maintenance of existing CAPs in LAAAs after the end of the project. In addition to supporting the LAAA project, CAP continues to encourage new scheme development in areas with relatively high underage harms - priority regions are North East England, North West England, Scotland and Wales. The aims of this study were to model jointly the incidence rates of six smoking related cancers in the Yorkshire region of England, to explore the patterns of spatial correlation amongst them, and to estimate the relative weight of smoking and other shared risk factors for the relevant disease sites, both before and after adjustment for socioeconomic background (SEB). Data on the incidence of oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, lung, kidney, and bladder cancers between 1983 and 2003 were extracted from the Northern & Yorkshire Cancer Registry database for the 532 electoral wards in the Yorkshire region. Using postcode of residence, each case was assigned an area-based measure of SEB using the Townsend index. Standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated for each cancer site and their correlations investigated. The joint analysis of the spatial variation in incidence used a Bayesian shared-component model. Three components were included to represent differences in smoking (for all six sites),

Northumberland is a maritime county in the North East of England, which borders on Scotland. It is the northernmost county in the country. From Wikipedia - Northumberland is a county in the North East of England. The non-metropolitan county of Northumberland borders Cumbria to the west, County Durham to the south and Tyne and Wear to the south east, as well as having a border with the Scottish Borders council area to the north, and nearly eighty miles of North Sea coastline. Since the creation of Tyne and Wear in 1974, the county council has been located in Morpeth, situated in the east of the county; however, both Morpeth and Alnwick claim the title county town. As the kingdom of Northumbria under King Edwin, the regions historical boundaries stretched from the Humber in the south to the Forth in the north. There are five principal urban centres, Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, Northampton and Nottingham; and a number of next tier centres including Boston, Chesterfield, Corby, Grantham, Hinckley, Kettering, Loughborough, Mansfield, Newark and Wellingborough. The regions relative proximity to London and its connectivity on the national motorway and trunk road networks help the East Midlands thrive as an economic hub. The regions principal airport is East Midlands Airport located ≤20km (≤12.5 miles) from Ashby, Derby, Ilkeston, Loughborough and Nottingham. The high point at 636 m (2,087 ft) is Kinder Scout, in ...
Sex-specific patterns and trends in the incidence of childhood cancer have consistently been demonstrated,1 and can provide insights into pathogenesis. Unfortunately often only pooled results have been given. Potentially this may have masked sex-specific temporal trends, especially over a prolonged time period.. A previous study from the Northern Region of England examined the incidence of leukemias and lymphomas diagnosed in cases aged 0-24 years during the period 1968-1995.2 This analysis found an overall increase in the incidence in the area. Similar increases have been found in other studies from the UK and elsewhere.1. The aim of the present study was to update the previous analyzes from the Northern Region and to determine whether there were sex-specific trends in incidence. We analysed all hematologic malignancies diagnosed in cases aged 0-24 years who were resident in the Northern Region during the period 1968 - 2005. Analyses were made separately for boys and girls (aged 0-14) and ...

England was named after a Germanic tribe called the "Angles", who settled in Central, Northern, and Eastern England in the 5th century. A related tribe called the "Saxons" settled in the south of England. That is why that period of English history is called "Anglo-Saxon". For the majority of this time, England did not exist as a united country. The Anglo-Saxons lived in many small kingdoms, which slowly united. The later countries of England and Wales were formed from the earlier Roman Britain. England became one country in 937. The first King of England was Athelstan. He lost land to Danish invaders, who formed their own country in the East and North. Many villages and towns in this area (particularly in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire) have Danish names, and use some Danish-based words. At one time Wessex (in the West of England) was the only English kingdom left. After many battles, King Alfred the Great of Wessex became king of the whole of England, and the old kingdoms (Mercia, Northumberland, ...

Introduction FOR many decades, Cornwall has been the poor relation in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It vies with the west of Wales as being the poorest region of northern Europe, has the UKs lowest average income and among the UKs highest domestic overheads. Although its citizens pay the same proportion of their income in taxes as anyone else, Cornwall has been scandalously underfunded by London for far too long. In 2002, it was reliably calculated that the UK Government takes £300 million a year more from Cornwall than it gives back (Business Age magazine). Cornwall was once a proud independent Celtic kingdom but through historical events which lay outside both democratic and legal process, it has been counted, by London, as part of England since the mid 16th century; its people labelled as

Our results show that when patients rate doctors interpersonal skills as good on a patient experience questionnaire, this does not always indicate positive experiences of care as subsequently described in interviews, and can include important negative experiences. Very good response choices are, however, more likely to better reflect almost entirely positive care experiences.. This study was based on a small sample in English general practice, with 50 videotaped consultations. Video elicitation interviews are a labour-intensive approach requiring substantial commitment on behalf of the patient and the researcher, limiting the number that could be undertaken. However, we are confident that our sampling strategy generated sufficient high-quality data to provide a robust assessment of the discordance between questionnaire responses and subsequent accounts of care.15 Interviews used the consultation video recording to prompt patient reflections on care, and were thus not reliant on patient ...

Although Northamptonshire is located in the East Midlands, and has historically harboured a dialect comparable to other forms of East Midlands English,[12] particularly among the older generation, the linguistic distinctiveness of Northamptonshire has significantly eroded. This is represented by the dialect of Kettering which is influenced by the dialects of western parts of East Anglia, the West Midlands, and the South as well as the Watford Gap Isogloss, the demarcation line between southern and northern English accents. In Kettering (north of the Watford Gap) the word glass rhymes with mass whereas in Northampton, only 14 miles further south but south of the Watford Gap, the pronunciation of glass rhymes with farce. Contrary to popular belief, the Watford in question is Watford village and not the town of Watford which borders the north of London.. The Danelaw split the present county into a Viking north and a Saxon south. This is quite plainly heard, with people in the south ...

Updated 5 October 2017. The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is the principal provider of acute care services in the county of Cornwall. The Trust is not a Foundation Trust and performance is monitored by NHS Improvement (NHSI). The Trust serves a population of around 532,273 people, a figure that can be doubled by holidaymakers during the busiest times of the year.. CQC has previously carried out two comprehensive inspections at Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust. The first being in January 2014 when the trust was rated as requires improvement. In June 2015 we carried out a follow up to the first inspection and found the trust had not made sufficient progress in all areas and a second comprehensive inspection was initiated, which we carried out in January 2016. At that time, the trust was rated as requires improvement overall. We rated safe, effective, responsive and well led as requires improvement and caring as good.. We reviewed the epidemiology of cases reported in London and South East England for the period 2010 to 2015. We characterised risk factors associated with late reporting of cases and described public health actions taken on timely reported cases. From 2010 to 2015, 9,163 cases of pertussis were reported to health protection teams. Only 11% of cases were reported within 21 days of onset, limiting opportunities for secondary prevention. Timely reporting was associated with younger age groups, pregnancy, being a healthcare worker and being reported by schools or hospital clinicians. Late reporting was associated with older age groups and general practitioner or laboratory reporting. Delays, such as those due to insidious
The general practice assessment survey has been extensively tested for validity and reliability.9 10 Response rates in our study were good except in the very oldest age group (85 years or more), and general practice assessment survey scores are close to (within 5%) those found previously in the United Kingdom for patients from the full range of ages.10 Our three records based measures were based on explicit criteria, and we believe that they were reliably ascertained. Basildon is a medium sized town in south east England with fairly typical demography, and although the population has below average home ownership and access to a car, there are few pockets of serious deprivation. Recruitment of practices to the study was good. Therefore our findings are likely to be generalisable to other parts of the United Kingdom and potentially more widely.. One possible explanation for our results is that patients are right; technical quality of care offered by doctors in primary care may be closely related ...

With tree branches waving fiercely in the wind and gloomy light presaging rain, Leicestershire were racing to beat the elements more than their limp Derbyshire opponents after lunch, but charged in 45 minutes before tea.. It was their first victory in all cricket at Grace Road since April 25 after a run of 15 games in three competitions without home success, including a one-day defeat by Scotland. Given the overnight position, it proved remarkably easy.. Derbyshire folded in the manner Pakistan in the morning, losing their five remaining wickets for 24 runs in nine overs as Matthew Hoggard secured his 700th first-class scalp and Nathan Buck revelled in a brief burst of 3-2-2-3.. But, despite vagaries of bounce that contributed to a nightmare for Lee…. ...

The Cornish Dilemma.. Until a few centuries ago Cornwall existed on British maps as a separate and distinct country to England. Royalty referred to themselves as being rulers of England and Cornwall. A Greek traveler in 300BC - recorded that the people of Cornwall were an evolved and civilized tin mining community trading tin with other countries - 800 years before the Anglo-Saxons first set foot in Britain. In 1337 the Nation of Cornwall was made a royal Duchy to provide an income to the Heir to the throne, Cornwall became an extra-territorial region of Britain ruled by the Dukes of Cornwall. ...

During the Serpukhovian (late Mississippian) Stage, the Pennine Basin, now underlying much of northern England, consisted of a series of interlinked sub-basins that developed in response to the crustal extension north of the Hercynic orogenic zone. For the current study, mudstone samples of the Morridge Formation from two sub-basins located in the south-eastern part of the Pennine Basin were collected from the Carsington Dam Reconstruction C3 Borehole (Widmerpool Gulf sub-basin) and the Karenight 1 Borehole (Edale Gulf sub-basin). Detailed palynological analyses indicate that aside from the dominant (often 90% or more) heterogeneous amorphous organic matter (AOM), variable abundances of homogeneous AOM and phytoclasts are present. To complement the palynological dataset, a suite of geochemical and mineralogical techniques were applied to evaluate the prospectivity of these potentially important source rocks. Changes in the carbon isotope composition of the bulk organic fraction (δ13COM) suggest ...

Background: In 2015, Bristol (South West England) experienced a large increase in cases of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection in people who inject drugs (PWID). Aim: We aimed to characterise and estimate the prevalence of MRSA colonisation among PWID in Bristol and test evidence of a clonal outbreak. Methods: PWID recruited through an unlinked-anonymous community survey during 2016 completed behavioural questionnaires and were screened for MRSA. Univariable logistic regression examined associations with MRSA colonisation. Whole-genome sequencing used lineage-matched MRSA isolates, comparing PWID (screening and retrospective bacteraemia samples from 2012-2017) with non-PWID (Bristol screening) in Bristol and national reference laboratory database samples. Results: The MRSA colonisation prevalence was 8.7% (13/149) and was associated with frequently injecting in public places (odds ratio (OR): 5.5; 95% confidence interval (CI):1.34-22.70), recent healthcare contact (OR: 4.3; 95%

An electrical resistivity tomography survey has clearly indicated the presence of substantial vertical zones of contrasting material beneath a set of conspicuous linear surface hollows that cut across a spur forming part of the Cotswold Hills escarpment in Gloucestershire. These zones are compared with nearby quarry exposures and are inferred to be gulls - graben-like structures at least 80 m deep filled with collapsed blocks of bedrock with intervening air-filled spaces, lying within areas of relatively undisrupted gently dipping strata, and which under some circumstances would present a significant geohazard. Our results confirm the great potential of this non-invasive and rapid survey technique for investigating such phenomena, and provide an exemplar for comparison with surveys elsewhere, to assist identification of similar features.. ...

Over at Spencer Carters Microburin blog a recent post has discussed the possible evidence for the Mesolithic Storegga tsunami in the Tees bay in north eastern England. Although normally concerned with Mesolithic flints Spencer has crafted a wonderfully detailed and engaging post on the archaeological and palaeo-environmental evidence for marine regressions and transgressions in the bay, helping to highlight the rich (and perhaps Id say overlooked) archaeological record for the north east of England. In particular this post highlights the value of researching monographs from local archaeological units, and of new vital research into the character of the Mesolithic period in northern England.. The challenging and changing nature of the Tees bay in evaluating the palaeo-environmental changes highlights the necessity to cast a critical eye over the available literature and on-going research projects. In particular highlighting the effects of long term international events (recline of the last ...
