The UOIT Engineering Students Society, also known as UOIT EngSoc, is the representative student body for all undergraduate full-time students enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (FEAS) and the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science (FESNS) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Although most public health and environmental engineers are aware of the importance of microbial activity, many civil engineers do not appreciate the part microbiological process play in, for example, biodeterioration of concrete and other construction materials, alteration of soil and rock properties, clogging of boreholes, distribution and irrigation systems, and biofouling in embankment dams. There is a need for greater interaction between scientists and engineers in this respect. Recent advances in applied microbiology and biochemistry could usefully be extrapolated to fields of civil engineering. Indeed an understanding of microbiological activity in what is often thought of as purely physical and/or chemical processes and an awareness of what to look for is becoming increasingly important for civil engineers in their design of a variety of systems and structures. This book forms the Proceedings of the International Conference held at Cranfield Institute of Technology, UK, in September 1990.
We consider the socially optimal use of solar geoengineering to manage climate change. Solar geoengineering can reduce damages from atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, potentially more cheaply than reducing emissions. If so, optimal policy includes less abatement than recommended by models that ignore solar geoengineering, and the price of carbon is lower. Solar geoengineering reduces temperature but does not reduce atmospheric or ocean carbon concentrations, and that carbon may cause damages apart from temperature increases. Finally, uncertainty over climate change and solar geoengineering alters the optimal deployment of solar geoengineering. We explore these issues with an analytical model and a numerical simulation. The price of carbon is 30%-45% lower than the price recommended in a model without geoengineering, depending on the parameterizations of geoengineering costs and benefits. July 27, 2001 - Threats of rolling blackouts and skyrocketing energy bills have kept San Francisco State University engineering students and faculty members busy as they continue a valuable program of auditing companies and recommending ways to reduce power consumption and save money. SFSU is the only Northern California site and one of only three universities in California to conduct energy audits through the U.S. Department of Energys Industrial Assessment Center. The next scheduled audit will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 2, at Sealy Mattress Manufacturing, 1130 7th St. in Richmond. Since 1992, SFSU engineering students and professors have visited more than 200 companies and analyzed energy consumption. The SFSU team has recommended energy saving amounts ranging from several thousand dollars to $200,000 a year based on the teams recommendations. One of her project goals was to understand how an intracellular receptor called TLR3 is compartmentalized. This would allow her research team to better comprehend the biology of these receptors, which could "lead to modulation of their activity in the context of immunotherapy." Nicole drew heavily from her MIT coursework in biochemistry and biology; she even brought her notes from previous courses, so that she would have a solid foundation for consulting basic principles. Downloadable! We study optimal climate policy when climate tipping points and solar geoengineering are present. Solar geoengineering reduces temperatures without reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Climate tipping points are irreversible and uncertain events that cause large damages. We analyze three different rules related to the availability of solar geoengineering: a ban, using solar geoengineering as insurance against the risk of tipping points, or using solar geoengineering only as remediation in the aftermath of a tipping point. We model three distinct types of tipping points: two that alter the climate system and one that yields a direct economic cost. Using an analytic model, we find that an optimal policy, which minimizes expected losses from the tipping point, includes both emissions reductions and solar geoengineering from the onset. Using a numerical simulation model, we quantify optimal policy and various outcomes under the alternative scenarios. The presence of tipping points leads to more
