Jamestown (originally James Town) was named after Sir James Fergusson, the Governor of South Australia when the town was surveyed in 1871. Its streets are all named for towns in his native Scotland.[2] Major products of the area are grain, legumes, wool and timber. The worlds first plantation forest was the Bundaleer Forest first planted in the area in 1876. The local area had first been granted self-government as the District Council of Belalie in 1875, but the township of Jamestown itself had separated as the Corporate Town of Jamestown in 1878. The Belalie council, comprising the surrounding areas, merged into the new District Council of Jamestown in 1935. Jamestown continued with two municipalities, one for the town and one for the surrounding area, until their amalgamation in 1991; the amalgamated municipality then merged into the new Northern Areas Council in 1997.[2] ...

Jamestown, located on Jamestown Island in the Virginia Colony, was founded on May 14, 1607. It is commonly regarded as the first permanent English settlement in what is now the United States, following several earlier failed attempts. It was founded by the Virginia Company, headquartered in London. The location at Jamestown Island was selected primarily because it offered a favorable strategic defensive position against other European forces which might approach by water. However, the colonists soon discovered that the swampy and isolated site was plagued by mosquitoes and tidal river water unsuitable for drinking, and offered limited opportunities for hunting and little space for farming. The area was also inhabited by Native Americans. What became known as the Starving Time in the Virginia Colony occurred during the winter of 1609 10. Only 60 of 214 English colonists survived. Throughout the 17th century, Jamestown was the capital of the Virginia Colony. On October 20, 1698, the statehouse ...

There are several hypocrisies that emerge from this discovery. One is the immediate cover that western anthros and archeologists attempt to provide for this practice by labeling it survival cannibalism. When Columbus, and later Franciscus de Vitoria, Edward Coke, and their successors, developed and applied legal justifications for the waging of just war against indigenous peoples, evidence of cannibalism was on the top of the list. The coining of the term survival cannibalism provides a Eurocentric shield to suggest that the Jamestown folks were still culturally superior to the Powahtans around therm, but that the English invaders only resorted to cannibalism as a last resort to survive. Any reasonable person would have done the same, right? The resulting implication is that he Indians, on the other hand, were permanently mired in a culturally and spiritually inferior condition (reportedly engaging in cannibalism on a regular basis), requiring remediation (or extermination, whichever ...

Dr. Glaser offers a unique prospective on neurovirology, having both a veterinary and medical background and she brings this expertise to the California Encephalitis Project (CEP), where she has served as director since its inception in 1998. The CEP was initiated to investigate and characterize etiologic agents and the epidemiologic features of encephalitis. The CEP examines infectious viral groups including herpesviruses, enteroviruses, and arboviruses. Non-viral etiologies such as amoeba, rickettsia and mycoplasma also fall within the CEPs scope of investigation. Testing for infectious agents was coordinated by the Centers for Disease Control and incorporated many other laboratories throughout the world to identify and characterize pathogens. Under the direction of Dr. Glaser, over 6000 cases have been referred to the CEP, and although the etiology of many cases remain unexplained, several important findings regarding encephalitis have emerged. Limitations of molecular testing for ...
All wild animals carry diseases. In some cases these might be of concern because they can spread to humans or domestic animals. In other cases they may be of interest simply because the signs of the disease have been seen and you want to know more. Though diseases are relatively common in these animals there is usually an increase in reporting when the hare populations are at a peak. High populations mean that there is an increased chance of one animal infecting another. In addition, when there are too many animals in one area, the amount of available food is reduced so that the animals become weaker and more vulnerable to disease. The two common tapeworm infections in the snowshoe hare of this province are described in this fact sheet.
Snowshoe hares that camouflage themselves by changing their coats from brown in summer to white in winter face serious threats from climate change, and its uncertain whether hare populations will be able to adapt in time, ...
Answer: B. Plaque reduction neutralization test. PRNT is used to confirm JCV infection following a positive or equivocal result for IgM-class antibodies by enzyme immunoassay or immunofluorescence assay. PRNT is also used to compare the endpoint neutralizing antibody titers between closely related viruses, with the infectious virus most frequently identified as the one with at least a 4-fold or higher endpoint titer compared to the other tested viruses. This is especially helpful if serologic testing is positive for more than one virus in the California serogroup, which occurs frequently due to the cross-reactivity of these assays. ...

The regular appearance in the Chinese media of Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) figures calling for aggressive foreign policy causes controversy and confusion among foreign observers. The most sensational remarks usually are made by academics at PLA institutions. Foreign media routinely pick up sensational quotes from these military officers-such as Major General Luo Yuans repeated suggestion for declaring the Diaoyu Islands a Chinese military target range or Rear Admiral Zhang Zhaozhongs recent call for a blockade of Philippine outposts in the Spratly Islands-and attribute them to senior military leaders, as their ranks seem to suggest (Beijing TV/Global Times Net [Huanqiu Wang], May 27; South China Morning Post, March 3; Tea Leaf Nation, February 25). Operational commanders, however, seldom comment in public on policy issues. Prominent foreign policy analyst Wang Jisi has publicly complained about reckless statements, made with no official authorization which had created a great deal of ...
Jamestown has succeeded in growing into many sectors including rail where it has produced individual components up to 100 tonnes in finished single pieces. The Foxhall Lane Bridge was a particularly interesting project, said Mr Fortune. It involved 40m-long, 2m-deep Western Region-type trapezoidal box girders made from weathering steel. Traditionally these box girders had to be painted internally, which is a high risk procedure. Weathering steel was chosen to eliminate this risk by not requiring anyone to enter the box. The aesthetics of the bridge was maintained by painting the external areas offsite.. With critical elements such as cambers, bearing positions and cross beams with faying surfaces, a full trial erection ensured all elements fitted together before going to site.. In more typical steel construction projects, Jamestown has supplied plate girders to projects like Farringdon Station, the Olympic Stadium, Reading Station redevelopment, Blackburn Bus Station, and St James Square ...

One theme of these poems is a fascination with the prairie. As you travels west from Fargo North Dakota you soon approach an line of hills rising 200 to 300 feet from the valley floor. Geologists call this the Pembina Escarpment. As your road winds up these hill you be entering the middle plateau of the Great Plains called the Drift Prairie. If you were to continue west of Jamestown you would come to another wall of 300 foot high hills called the Missouri Escarpment. However if you turn south at Jamestown and follow the James River south you will come to the little town where Rick was born and I grew up wandering the prairie and finding ancient campgrounds and arrow heads and wondering what life was like centuries before in this fascinating land. Many of Ricks poems celebrate the beauty of this land and the animals and people that live here now and lived here over the centuries ...
The two-headed Russian leadership is seeking to demonstrate that the issues in their relations with key European countries caused by the Georgian episode have come to an end in less than a month. Precisely that was achieved in the Russian-German summit in St. Petersburg last week where Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and German Chancellor Angela Merkel presided over several wide-ranging meetings of key ministers and business leaders (Rossiiskaya gazeta, RBC Daily, October 3). The leaders felt obliged to discuss the post-war settlement and confirmed that differences on this issue have not all been settled yet, and Merkel insisted that Georgias territorial integrity is not open to discussion. Medvedev also saw no point in such discussions and was ready to leave those to other forums, such as the Council of Europe, where parliamentarians had a two-day-long shouting match last week resulting, predictably, in a hollow resolution (Kommersant, October 3).. Merkel knew perfectly well that ...

Burlington Daily Times, May 14, 1861. We are not a homogeneous people. We never have been so. What is distinctively denominated American civilization has streamed across the continent on parallel or nearly parallel lines, from the two centers, Plymouth Rock and Jamestown. Other elements have, from time to time, been worked in, to be sure, but they have been leavened and molded by the controlling and primary power that set the whole movement agoing. A large foreign population is of no material account. If reckoned by the head, they would present a formidable army, but when estimated by the juster and proper standard of the power they exert in shaping our affairs and the destiny of the nation they shrink at once to an inappreciable value.. These two great currents of civilization were radically different on the start. Plymouth Rock had little sympathy with Jamestown. The plain, stern, reverent Puritan could not fraternize with the extravagant, profligate and courtly planter of the old Dominion. ...

Summary A new arthropod-borne agent, Melao virus, was isolated from Aedes scapularis collected in a Trinidadian forest in 1955. The virus was shown to be related immunologically to California encephalitis virus. Some of the physical and biological properties of the virus are reported. Limited studies have not shown evidence of immunity to Melao in human beings or monkeys from Trinidad.
La Crosse virus (LACV) (genus Orthobunyavirus, family Peribunyaviridae) is a mosquito-borne virus that causes pediatric encephalitis and accounts for 50-150 human cases annually in the USA. Human cases occur primarily in the Midwest and Appalachian regions whereas documented human cases occur very rarely in the northeastern USA. Following detection of a LACV isolate from a field-collected mosquito in Connecticut during 2005, we evaluated the prevalence of LACV infection in local mosquito populations and genetically characterized virus isolates to determine whether the virus is maintained focally in this region. During 2018, we detected LACV in multiple species of mosquitoes, including those not previously associated with the virus. We also evaluated the phylogenetic relationship of LACV strains isolated from 2005-2018 in Connecticut and found that they formed a genetically homogeneous clade that was most similar to strains from New York State. Our analysis argues for local isolation and long-term
We characterized a La Crosse virus (LACV) isolate from the brain of a child who died of encephalitis-associated complications in eastern Tennessee, USA, during summer 2012. We compared the isolate with LACV sequences from mosquitoes collected near the childs home just after his postmortem diagnosis. In addition, we conducted phylogenetic analyses of these and other sequences derived from LACV strains representing varied temporal, geographic, and ecologic origins. Consistent with historical findings, results of these analyses indicate that a limited range of LACV lineage I genotypes is associated with severe clinical outcomes ...
We reviewed medical records from all 9 case-patients initial illnesses and abstracted data using a standard form. We contacted patients and, after obtaining consent, administered a questionnaire to assess any residual weakness in the patients and their current functional status according to the modified Rankin scale (a standardized measure of disability for persons with neurologic conditions, by which a score of 0 is normal and 5 denotes severe disability) (8). If the patient was ,18 years of age at the time of the follow-up interview, we obtained permission from a parent or guardian and administered the questionnaire to the parents. For patients with unclear neurologic findings or diagnosis, a board-certified neurologist performed a follow-up neurologic examination. We obtained human ethics approval for this investigation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Institutional Review Board.. We defined AFP as a clinical syndrome of rapid-onset extremity weakness, sometimes ...
Abstract Two viruses were isolated from ceratopogonid midges collected in northern Colorado. Electron microscopy indicated that both isolates were bunyavirus-like. Indirect fluorescent antibody and serum dilution-plaque reduction neutralization tests showed that these isolates were members of the Tete serogroup, most closely related antigenically to Tete and Batama viruses but distinguishable from both and from each other. We suggest the name Weldona virus for these isolates. Antibody in both waterfowl and passerine birds in norther Colorado indicates the enzootic presence of these viruses in northern Colorado and raises unanswered questions about the introduction and establishment of Tete serogroup viruses in the Americas.

By Terry Rindfleisch, La Crosse Tribune, Wis. Jul. 8--Sexually transmitted diseases continue to be a public health concern in La Crosse County. For the past several years, STDs have been on the rise, and that didnt change much last year, according to the 2007 La Crosse County Health Department annual report. The number of gonorrhea cases in the county more than doubled, from 27 in 2006 to 62 in 2007. The first episode of genital herpes also increased significantly from 74 in 2006 to 108 last year. The good news is the number of chlamydia cases dropped for the first time in several years from 355 to 335, but Doug Mormann said the number is still too high. STDs continue to be a problem, but its not a unique problem to our county, said Mormann, director of the La Crosse County Health Department. We always have a new group of people who need to be educated in that area.. The number of AIDS and HIV cases dropped in 2007 -- from nine AIDS cases in 2006 to three last year and 13 HIV cases in 2006 ...

Scientists have determined that La Crosse virus (LACV), which can cause inflammation of the brain, or encephalitis, in children, affects brain cells differently depending on their developmental stage. Neurons-the primary brain cells of the central nervous system-evolve from neural stem cells and during development commit to becoming neurons. A new National Institutes of Health study shows that uncommitted neural stems cells generally survive LACV infection, while LACV often kills neurons. The study also shows that neurons infected by LACV can be rescued by interferon, a powerful antiviral protein. The study results appear in the Journal of Neuroinflammation.. LACV is spread by mosquitoes and was first identified in the early 1960s. Most infections in people are mild but the virus sometimes-particularly in children-enters the brain, infects neurons and causes disease ranging from learning and memory difficulties to paralysis, seizures and death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ...

The first two English colonies established in North America were Roanoke 1585 and Jamestown 1607. The latter colony on the James River of Virginia survived and became Virginias capitol until 1699. Throughout much of the 17th century, settlements expanding from Jamestown remained limited to waterways such as the James, York, Rappahannock, Potomac Rivers and Chesapeake Bay.. The Rappahannock River valley was opened for settlement in 1649 (2) and it was here, at or near the present town of Tappahannock, Virginia that my earliest known American ancestor was already established in 1671. In this year he made his mark next to his name (spelled STALLION) as one of two witnesses to a deed of gift for the transfer of ownership of two cows from MARTIN JOHNSON to JOHN EVANS with Major THOMAS HAWKINS given power of attorney (3). Precious little is known about Walter Stallard. Since parish records were not kept, basically only deeds and court orders record the early transactions. Many of these documents ...

This funding, combined with a matching private donation, will bring our 20-year old lighting, sound and visual equipment into the modern era and dramatically improve the presentation of and the enjoyment of programs in the theater, said Doug Orville, executive director in the release.. Replacing and upgrading the lighting, visual and sound equipment will make the programs and events more successful for the whole community, he said.. The PLACE in Portsmouth received $9,337 to support theater, dance and music performances and workshops, including yoga dance, expressive movement and sounding circle drumming. In addition, there are plans for an afterschool chorus program for school ...

So the June day finally came to actually catch out. I rode the bus over to La Crosse, WI where I was pretty sure that I could catch out undetected. My plan was to hike a mile or two from the bus drop off point on the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse campus to a secluded spot along the BNSF mainline where I would wait for dark and a suitable train.. As luck would have it, it was a rainy day. I had looked at the weather forecast and determined that the front triggering the rain would be past La Crosse by early evening leaving me decent weather to catch out in. I arrived in La Crosse to a moderate and steady rainfall. I was well prepared, I had a rain cover for my giant pack as well as rain gear for myself. I bought a cheep rain suit from Walmart that consisted of waterproof pants and jacket. Continue reading The Summer of Train Hopping! Part III →. ...
I believe that healthy neighborhoods depend upon people feeling free and secure to interact directly with one another. The COVID pandemic has been a heavy burden for us all, and it will be a struggle to overcome the feelings of isolation and hopelessness that we have had to deal with. If elected, I would look forward to engaging with the La Crosse Neighborhoods, Inc., (LCNI) and specifically with the Springbrook Clayton Johnson Neighborhood Association. We need to rebuild peoples confidence to come out of our homes and to engage with one another once it becomes safe when our current public health emergency subsides. There are areas of district 13 that are not included in the LCNI. I would like to explore the possibility of including those residential areas into LCNI with the establishment of new neighborhood associations as needed.. ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Carbon dioxide fluxes in the city centre of Arnhem, A middle-sized Dutch city. AU - Kleingeld, Eva. AU - van Hove, Bert. AU - Elbers, Jan. AU - Jacobs, Cor. PY - 2018/6. Y1 - 2018/6. N2 - This paper reports on the temporal variability of carbon dioxide fluxes in the city centre of Arnhem, a middle-sized Dutch city. The fluxes were continuously measured during four years (2012-2016) using the eddy-covariance method. Additionally, continuous meteorological measurements were carried out. We also analysed data from 30-minute traffic counts performed during those years. Results indicate that the city centre of Arnhem is a strong emission source of CO2 compared to many other cities. The measured annual CO2 flux equals about 8.0kgCm-2 yr-1. Heterogeneity within the footprint of the EC tower appeared to have no or only a small influence on the estimated annual and seasonal carbon fluxes. Sector analysis shows that CO2 fluxes are consistently higher in sectors with the highest built-up ...
This paper compares statistical and visual patterns represented in decorated Oneota pottery from the La Crosse Locality. The study addresses the question of type definitions based on quantitative measurements of visual attributes versus statistical analysis of these and newly recorded attribute data. The sample used for this analysis is from the Krause site (47Lc41), La Crosse County, Wisconsin. Particular attention was focused on handles, as previous research is lacking in this component of Oneota vessels. Past research has focused on handle attachment location and not on specific attributes of the handles themselves such as length, width, thickness and arc ratio. To provide a broad sample, additional handles were examined from the Olson (47Lc76), Pammel Creek (47Lc61) and Valley View (47Lc34) sites. These villages are the type-sites for a sequence of three Oneota phases at La Crosse. In addition to handles, this study considered rim decoration, decorative design elements and motifs, vessel ...
Encapsidates the genome protecting it from nucleases. The encapsidated genomic RNA is termed the nucleocapsid (NC) and serves as template for transcription and replication. Seems to participate in the nuclear relocalization of host PABP1, thereby inhibiting host cellular translation (By similarity).
