The proportion of workers covered by pensions has increased very substantially over the past two or three decades, and in particular the number of older workers with pensions continues to increase. During the same period,and especially in the past decade, the labor force participation of older workers has declined dramatically. These two trends may well be related. This paper examines the incentive effects of private pensions. We find that the provisions of pension plans provide very substantial incentives to terminate work at the current job after the age of early retirement and even greater incentives to leave after the age of normal retirement. It is not unusual for the reduction in pension benefit accrual after these retirement ages to equal the equivalent of a 30 percent reduction in wage earnings. In addition to a potentially large impact on labor force participation of older workers, pension plan provisions are likely to have important effects on labor mobility of younger workers.

We study whether cultural attitudes towards gender, the young, and leisure are significant determinants of the evolution over time of the employment rates of women and of the young, and of hours worked in OECD countries. Beyond controlling for a larger menu of policies, institutions and structural characteristics of the economy than has been done so far, our analysis improves upon existing studies of the role of culture for labor market outcomes by dealing explicitly with the endogeneity of attitudes, policies and institutions, and by allowing for the persistent nature of labor market outcomes. When we do all this we find that culture still matters for women employment rates and for hours worked. However, policies and other institutional or structural characteristics are also important. Attitudes towards youth independence, however, do not appear to be important in explaining the employment rate of the young. The share of the population aged 60 and over is projected to increase in nearly every country in the world during 2005-2050. Population ageing will tend to lower both labor-force participation and savings rates, thereby raising concerns about a future slowing of economic growth. Our calculations suggest that OECD countries are likely to see modest - but not catastrophic - declines in the rate of economic growth. However, behavioral responses (including greater female labor force participation) and policy reforms (including an increase in the legal age of retirement) can mitigate the economic consequences of an older population. In most non-OECD countries, declining fertility rates will cause labor-force-to-population ratios to rise as the shrinking share of young people will more than offset the skewing of adults toward the older ages. Across nearly all issue-areas women remain unequal to men. Despite substantial reform, there is a persistent citizenship gap between men and women. This gap appears to be narrowing more quickly in some countries than others. Along with advocacy-based mechanisms, cultivating womens core rights, namely education and labor force participation, appear to foster resources critical for the advancement of other rights. Examining four issues-areas, the empirical analyses suggest that the citizenship gap is contracting in places that invest more in womens rights advocacy and the education of girls, and to a lesser extent, where women are better integrated into the workforce.
The Longitudinal Study of Generations (LSOG), initiated in 1971, began as a survey of intergenerational relations among 300 three-generation California families with grandparents (then in their sixties), middle-aged parents (then in their early forties), and grandchildren (then aged 15 to 26). The study broadened in 1991 and now includes a fourth generation, the great-grandchildren of these same families. The LSOG, with a fully elaborated generation-sequential design, allows comparisons of sets of aging parents and children at the same stage of life but during different historical periods. Two linked registers, containing diagnostic and socio-economic data for the 1.8 million residents of Stockholm County, were used to investigate the subsequent employment consequences over 5 yr of having a musculoskeletal disorder requiring hospital admission in 1996. Age-standardized employment rates of all patients with musculoskeletal disorder (n=2185) were compared with patients employed prior to hospital admission (n=1286) and with the general population of Stockholm. This prospective population-based study examined associations between childrens behaviour problems and maternal employment. Information on childrens behaviour problems at 3 years from 22,115 mothers employed before pregnancy and participating in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study were linked to national register data on employment and relevant social background factors, mothers self-reported susceptibility to anxiety/depression and mother-reports of day-care attendance and fathers income. The authors compared 3 approaches to vocational rehabilitation for severe mental illness (SMI): the individual placement and support (IPS) model of supported employment, a psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) program, and standard services. Clients in IPS had significantly better employment outcomes than clients in PSR and standard services, including more competitive work (73.9% vs. 18.2% vs. 27.5%, respectively) and any paid work (73.9% vs. 34.8% vs. 53.6%, respectively). There were few differences in nonvocational outcomes between programs. IPS is a more effective model than PSR or standard brokered vocational services for improving employment outcomes in clients with SMI.

he MVCCS evaluated in this study appeared to substantially improve employment outcome for persons with BI without interventions. Results were better than projections based on the previous literature 80% of those served were placed in community-based work with 46% in independent community-based employment. Employment outcomes for persons who received vocational services through this project approached or exceeded outcomes reported previously for intensive rehabilitation interventions. Just as importantly, initial vocational placements were maintained at 1-year follow-up. As part of an evaluation of the Alcohol and Drug Defense Program, a survey was conducted of 948 high school students in the Wake County Public School System, Raleigh, North Carolina. Of the 114 questions on the survey, 12 were related to students after-school employment, current course grades, and future plans after high school graduation. Answers to questions about students plans after high school indicated the following: approximately 74 percent planned to attend college; 9 percent planned to attend technical school; only 4.5 percent planned to get a job; and females were slightly more likely to plan to go to college. Concerning the employment status of the students, there was a clear link between the number of hours of employment per week and students earning lower grades. Factors influencing immigrant labour market outcomes have received increased scholarly atten- tion lately. A recent research focus has been the effects of residential setting on labour market outcomes. This study brings a new dimension to this emerging body of research, introducing the role played by workplace composition, in addition to place of residence, in immigrant earnings. Based on Swedish longitudinal register data, OLS regression is used to examine effects of previous exposure to natives on earnings in three immigrant cohorts (1990, 1995 and 2000) five years after arrival. Besides controlling for individual characteristics and various labour market attributes, a two-step Heckman correction procedure is applied to take into account the selectivity of entering the Swedish labour market. Purpose - Most research on employment relationship has been done on the Anglo‐Saxon context, the results of which may not be totally valid for India. The emerging employment relationship in India is best viewed through the lens of psychological contracts. Psychological contract has significant influence on valuable workplace outcomes. This paper seeks to propose a model for understanding employment relationship through the concept of psychological contracts. Design/methodology/approach - With the help of published case studies in the Indian context and based on social exchange theory, this paper proposes a model wherein trust mediates the relationship between the perception of breach of the psychological contract and HR systems. In this empirical study of disaster survivors, we prospectively chronicled their subsequent course of employment over three years. The study was designed to clarify the relationship between exposure to disaster and future employment and to aid the mental health expert who is asked to predict whether an individual exposed to a disaster can be expected to return to work. Overall employment rates were relatively unchanged after the disaster, although individual stories contained variations over time that are not described in the summary rates at baseline and follow-up. Those employed on the day of the disaster reported themselves to be not disabled at follow-up. Of those employed at the time of the disasters who were followed up at three years, only five percent were no longer working, and 8 of the 12 had transitioned to retired or housewife status.
