The SAGE Handbook of International Migration provides an authoritative and informed analysis of key issues in international migration, including its crucial significance far beyond the more traditional questions of immigrant settlement and incorporation in particular countries.
This study offers a comprehensive, up-to-date survey of global patterns of international migration and the policies employed to manage the flows. It shows that international migration is not rooted in poverty or rapid population growth, but in the expansion and consolidation of global markets. The insertion of non-market societies into global networks of trade unleashes structural transformations that displace people to create migrants.

Author(s): Anna Maria Mayda. 2007 Abstract: In this paper I empirically investigate the determinants of migration inflows into fourteen OECD countries by country of origin, between 1980 and 1995. I analyze the effect on migration of average income and income dispersion in destination and origin countries. I also examine the impact of geographical, cultural, and demographic factors as well as the role played by changes in destination countries migration policies. My analysis both delivers estimates consistent with the predictions of the international migration model and generates empirical puzzles.
The Volume and Dynamics of International Migration provides a theoretical account of the causes, nature, and extent of the movement of international South-North migrants between affluent and poorer countries. The puzzle is: why are there so few international migrants out of most places? And why are there so many out of so few places? Only once migration out of a few places has started, do we see relatively more people moving.

Downloadable! Recent theoretical and empirical studies have emphasized the fact that the prospect of international migration increases the expected returns to skills in poor countries, linking the possibility of migrating (brain drain) with incentives to higher education (brain gain). If emigration is uncertain and some of the highly educated remain, such a channel may, at least in part, counterbalance the negative effects of brain drain. Moreover, recent empirical evidence seems to show that temporary migration is widespread among highly skilled migrants (such as Eastern Europeans in Western Europe and Asians in the U.S.). This paper develops a simple tractable overlapping generations model that provides an economic rationale for return migration and which predicts who will migrate and who will return among agents with heterogeneous abilities. We use parameter values from the literature and the data on return migration to simulate the model and quantify the effects of increased openness on human

The newly launched Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) is delighted to announce its first lecture, taking place on 9 June.. Organised by Professor Darren Smith, the lecture falls under the theme of Migration and will be delivered by Professor Phillip Rees.. Policy, media and public discourses in the UK and beyond are influenced by the ways in which immigration is measured, analysed, and reported.. The public lecture will provide a review of party manifestos and Think Tank policy advice on immigration, reflecting on what a good immigration policy for the UK should look like post-Brexit.. It will also present a plan for improving international migration statistics in the UK and provide some forecasts of future international migration.. Professor Phillip Rees is a British population geographer and demographer. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Population Geography at the University of Leeds. In 1996, he was awarded the Gill Memorial Award from the Royal Geographical Society and in 1998 was made ...
This population-based case-control study showed that breast cancer risk among Hispanic women is heterogeneous and is modified by country of birth, duration of residence in the United States, age at migration to the United States, family migration history, and language usage. Adjustment for differences in the distribution of hormonal and lifestyle factors attenuated the associations with migration patterns in premenopausal women but only partially explained differences in breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women.. This study is the first comprehensive examination of breast cancer risk in Hispanic women in relation to migration history and acculturation. The only previous case-control study of migration patterns and breast cancer risk was conducted in Asian American women ages 20 to 55 years (12). Most of the available data on breast cancer risk in migrant populations derive from migrant studies that relied on routinely collected incidence or mortality data and therefore have only limited ...
Crimmigration has become a critical catch all concept for legal scholars, criminologists, and sociologists alike. The concept describes the way two previously separate state control spheres - border control and crime control - influence each other and are part of the same control mechanism experiences and developments. This concept, for example, helps understand Trumps effort to legitimize the tightening of immigration policy. It refers to both the protection of American economy and jobs and the explicit intent to protect American citizens from terrorists, rapists, and gang members. For this IMER lunch seminar, Synnøve Jahnsen from Rokkansenteret will talk about the usefulness of crimmigration as a concept in other settings. She will draw on empirical examples from her research on prostitution and human trafficking, Norwegian labour market crime policies, and the policing of outlaw motorcycle clubs and youth gangs in Australia and Europe. She will also use the opportunity to promote her new ...

Dr. Carson said that more work needs to be done educating the populous on the truth about vaccines. There were a lot of myths going around about vaccinations causing autism. On Wednesday, February 4, Rush Limbaugh said on his nationally syndicated radio show on why the media is not focusing on the measles outbreak, Many people made the point that the only reason its an issue now is Obamas immigration policy, that we had conquered the disease. The CDC had officially proclaimed measles to be a conquered disease in 2000. Meaning there was no need for anymore vaccines. And yet there were Obama and Hillary in 2008 (paraphrasing), Oh, yeah, well, there could be a link to autism. That was dredged up and then the idea that Obama and his immigration policy is largely responsible for this, so they drop it. Outspoken radio host Michael Savage told World Net Daily, Measles, the killer flu strain, the resurgence of TB have all followed Obamas reckless policy of bringing in unscreened, unvaccinated ...

The paper aims to analyse how the different economic phases that Spain has experienced in the first two decades of the 21st century (expansion, recession, and recovery) have influenced population stocks and migratory flows in the five largest metropolitan areas defined as Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) in Spain: Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid, Seville and Valencia. Using Padrón Continuo (municipal registers) and Estadística de Variaciones Residenciales (residential change statistics) as data sources, both native and immigrant - i.e. born abroad - stocks, and internal and international migration flows are analysed. We study differences between (a) diverse groups of foreigners (by continental origin), also comparing them to natives; and (b) different types of residential mobility by migrants previous place of residence: intrametropolitan movements (between urban cores and peripheries), migration flows between the five urban areas and the rest of Spain, and international migration.. CEB took up the issue of international migration and development on the basis of an initial assessment of the implications for the system, as discussed by the General Assembly at the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development; CEB would seek to identify the steps needed to work towards greater policy coherence and programmatic and operational coordination in that area. In that regard, an effort by the Global Migration Group to improve the knowledge base through an inventory of available data sources in each of its member organizations was supported. ...
One of the common complaints in the immigration reform debate is that our immigration system is a patchwork of laws added over the years, and not a comprehensive policy meant to address the current needs of the nation. Its true. While there have been some major reform efforts over the years, our present-day system came together piece by piece. How did we get our current immigration laws? For a quick review, here are 23 defining moments in immigration policy history:
John Morton testified about U.S. immigration policy, border security, and cooperative agreements with state and local law enforcement agencies, such as the Secure Communities program, which cross-checks local law enforcement data with federal immigration data to determine a persons immigration status. He also talked about the Obama administrations deportation of undocumented immigrants, and a recent Supreme Court decision on Arizonas immigration law.
The dynamics of income, earnings, and poverty of the foreign-born population in the United States have broad implications for both immigration flows and stock characteristics. Increased economic opportunity has always been one of the strongest motivating forces behind international migration and changes in economic opportunities might influence immigration. Differences between the economic well being of the native and foreign-born populations can suggest the degree to which immigrant groups are integrated within the U.S. economy and society, and economic downturns may differentially impact the foreign-born population. This research focuses on changes in the income, earnings, and poverty status of the foreign-born population in the United States from 2006 to 2009. Using data from the 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 American Community Surveys (ACS), we analyze the changes in median household income, median earnings, and poverty status by nativity, world region of birth, and selected countries of ...
Admission of more than one million immigrants per year adds significantly to the rapid population growth of the United States. Because some immigrants leave voluntarily or are deported the net population increase each year from immigrants is a bit less than one million according to the U.S. Census Bureau (USCB). The USCBs annually estimates the amount of population change from births, deaths, net domestic migration (interstate), and net international migration. The latter category is mostly the arrival and departure of foreigners.. Since mass immigration was unleashed by legislation in 1965, the share of the U.S. population increase due to immigration has grown rapidly. For example, the USCB data show net immigration accounting for 32 percent of the increase for the 1990-1999 period. For the most recent period (2010-2014), the share grew to 40.2 percent.. Those percentages, however, understate the impact of immigration on population increase. That is because the other factor in population ...
I am proud that Governor Christine Gregoire has recognized September as African Immigrant Health and Heritage Month, highlighting the tremendous contributions millions of African immigrants have made to our nation. As the Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I have had the opportunity to see firsthand the contributions that African immigrants make to our national security. Their commitment, courage and honor are commendable, and we should take this month to remember and appreciate all that these fine men and women have done for our nation ...
Attorneys with the U.S. Department of Justice yesterday filed suit to block an Alabama law thats been called the harshest attempt at an immigration crackdown anywhere in the nation. Alabamas law, which was signed by Gov. Robert Bentley (R) in June, would have illegal immigrants jailed until their immigration status could be verified. A charge of trespassing would be filed if anyone suspected of being undocumented were found out. It would also criminalize anyone who knowingly transports an illegal immigrant, and require employers to use an e-verify system to ensure their workers are citizens.. And much like the most controversial proposal from Arizonas immigration battle, it would empower police to investigate immigration status based upon reasonable suspicion, which opponents say effectively enshrines racial profiling into law.. Todays action makes clear that setting immigration policy and enforcing immigration laws is a national responsibility that cannot be addressed through a patchwork ...
The article examines the constraints that irregular migrants immigration status exerts on the realisation of their basic social human rights. To this end, the article focuses on the right to health care and undertakes a comparative study of irregular migrants access to health care in France, the United Kingdom and Canada. The study shows that States perceive the conferment of social rights on irregular migrants as an erosion of the governments immigration power notwithstanding their characterisation as human rights. The resource-intensive nature of the right to health care further heightens States reluctance to extend this right to irregular migrants. Yet compliance with international human rights law and respect for human dignity require that States reinstate personhood as a source of rights and therefore reassess the relevance of their immigration power.. ...
Author and radio host Deepa Fernandes joins us to talk about her new book, Targeted: Homeland Security and the Business of Immigration. Fernandes documents the hidden human struggles behind the immigration debate and exposes how big business has been a driving force in setting immigration policy.. DEEPA FERNANDES: Well, its very interesting, actually, that the President is talking about a guest worker program. And, of course, we only ever hear a sound bite about a guest worker program, which the right is very quick to call an amnesty program and immigrant rights advocates are very quick to say its the furthest thing from it. Well, what I found in New Orleans is what I believe is kind of a petri dish, a testing ground for what this guest worker program will look like. And from all the immigration research and being in prisons, going to Haiti, seeing the frontlines of what immigrants are going through under US immigration policy, my last few trips to New Orleans have been truly shocking to see ...
The Supreme Court dealt a setback to President Trumps immigration policy, declining to take up an administration appeal that sought a quick end to the Obama-era program protecting undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children.
This article develops a model of immigrants attitudes towards immigration. We focus on two competing motivations to explain these attitudes: while kinship, solidarity, and shared experiences with other immigrants should lead to more favorable attitudes towards immigration, formal integration into a new society may create a new allegiance to the host country that produces more critical views toward immigration. Using the European Social Survey (ESS) 1-5 data collected 2002-11 in 18 West European democracies, coarsened exact matching (CEM), and multilevel estimation techniques, our analyses reveal that foreigners support immigration more than natives. However, newcomers who have acquired citizenship in their host countries are more skeptical about the consequences of immigration and admitting new arrivals than noncitizen immigrants. This negative relationship between citizenship and support for immigration is particularly pronounced among those who are dissatisfied with their host countrys ...
On August 14, 2019, the Trump administration published a final rule to broaden the programs the federal government will consider in public charge determinations to include Medicaid coverage for non-pregnant adults and certain previously excluded nutrition and housing programs. To learn about the possible early effects of the public charge rule and other immigration policies on patients at community health centers, this brief draws on interviews and survey data to capture health center directors and staffs perceptions of changes in coverage and service use among their patients who are immigrants.
The prospect of President-elect Donald Trump implementing draconian immigration policies brings the Roman Catholic priest to the brink of despair. Is this what its all about? Since coming to New Haven in 2005, thats all weve talked about is immigration, the immigrant, and people know the immigrant now. … Neighbors they may be, but that hasnt stopped President Barack Obama from deporting more undocumented immigrants than any chief executive before him, according to politifact.com (although that is disputed by Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform). The Justice Department would bar those communities from receiving reimbursement for incarcerating illegal aliens, grants for community policing and money from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants.
Overview. For the most part, Hillary Clinton had a pro-immigration voting record while serving in the United States Senate. Yet, since her days in the Senate, the immigration debate has moved at a rapid pace from the third rail in American politics that politicians should avoid, to an issue that requires politicians to lean into to earn the votes of the immigrant community.. This rapid acceleration of immigration since 2008 had left Hillary Clinton rusty on the issue. However, there have been some early indications from Clintons 2016 campaign show that she may be leaning into the issue and recognizing that good immigration policy is also good politics. Most notably, Clintons bold pro-immigrant remarks in Las Vegas on May 5th, 2015 were a full-throated embrace of many immigrant activists priorities, as well as a strong signal that her candidacy will be run as an assertive immigration champion.. Background. During the Senate immigration debates in 2006 and 2007, Hillary Clinton voted for ...
Workers' remittances and compensation of employees; received (US dollar) in Gambia was last measured at 140991051.91 in 2012, according to the World Bank. Workers' remittances and compensation of employees comprise current transfers by migrant workers and wages and salaries earned by nonresident workers. Data are the sum of three items defined in the fifth edition of the IMF's Balance of Payments Manual: workers' remittances, compensation of employees, and migrants' transfers. Remittances are classified as current private transfers from migrant workers resident in the host country for more than a year, irrespective of their immigration status, to recipients in their country of origin. Migrants' transfers are defined as the net worth of migrants who are expected to remain in the host country for more than one year that is transferred from one country to another at the time of migration. Compensation of employees is the income of migrants who have lived in the host country for
Baghdad - On 17 March, following a kick-off meeting in February, the United Nations Network for Migration was formally launched in Iraq. The Network supports the international communitys efforts towards the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), which is the first inter-governmentally negotiated agreement covering all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner.. During the conflict with Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) the governments capacity to provide services, and co-ordinate critical functions of migration management and security at the central and local levels, were severely diminished. It is expected that Iraq will continue to experience complex migratory flows, including return migration of Iraqis from Europe and other regions, which will increase pressure on the government to effectively manage migration.. Migration management requires a whole of Government approach to ensure that social, ...
Aro compared population information provided by Statistics Finland concerning the countrys 20 largest cities in 2000-2006.. They all gain population through immigration. The starting level is low, he says.. The growth has also been noted by Pekka Myrskylä, head of development at Statistics Finland, who says that immigration is numerically greater now than ever before. Immigration now counts for nearly half of population growth. The other half is from births.. Demographers speak about net immigration. This refers to the difference between immigration and emigration.. In the 21st century so far, net immigration has tripled in Finland.. However, the figure also includes Finns who return home after spending time abroad. They account for 40 per cent of those moving back to Finland.. Immigration is very significant in old industrial cities and provincial cities which have suffered from net emigration, and where, in some cases, the birthrate has turned negative, Aro says.. Such cities include ...
B.C.s population reached 4.7 million by Oct. 1, a gain of less than one per cent from the same time last year.. The provinces population growth rate was down to 0.8 per cent by the third quarter of 2015, Central 1 Credit Union reports in its latest B.C. Economic Briefing. Net international migration was the main reason for the slowdown, with 11,100 international arrivals during what is usually the highest period of the year for immigration gains.. Within Canada, interprovincial migration climbed to nearly 5,000 in the third quarter of 2015, as people returned home to a relatively buoyant B.C. economy from provinces hit by slumping oil prices, notably Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland.. While permanent international resident arrivals were slower, international tourism demand climbed to more than 400,000 people by October, due mainly to U.S. visitors taking advantage of a lower Canadian dollar.. ...
Reverse brain drain is a form of brain drain where human capital moves in reverse from a more developed country to a less developed country that is developing rapidly. These migrants may accumulate savings, also known as remittances, and develop skills overseas that can be used in their home country. Brain drain can occur when scientists, engineers, or other intellectual elites migrate to a more developed country to learn in its universities, perform research, or gain working experience in areas where education and employment opportunities are limited in their home country. These professionals then return to their home country after several years of experience to start a related business, teach in a university, or work for a multi-national in their home country. Their return is this Reverse Brain Drain. The occurrence of reverse brain drain mostly depends on the state of the countrys development, and also strategies and planning over a long period of time to reverse the migration. Countries ...
He said the slower growth in November was likely a result of the weaker peso, which meant OFWs could send less money back to the Philippines and still be able to meet expenses in the country.. What theyre after is the peso value. The tendency is to adjust so the peso value of remittances will be the same. They can afford to send smaller amounts, Guinigundo said, noting that this trend was also noted in past spells of peso depreciation.. Growth in remittances in November was the slowest since January 2009, or months after the start of the 2008 global financial crisis, when remittances grew by just 0.1 percent. January to November 2014 remittances were up 5.7 percent to a high of $21.99 billion.. Projections by ING Bank earlier this week showed remittances were expected to grow by 7 percent. DBS, Southeast Asias largest bank, said remittance growth for the month was likely at 6.9 percent.. For all of 2014, the government expects remittances to be up by 5.5 percent to a record high of over $24 ...
Immigration has been a problem in America. Securing Americas Future Act (H.R. 4760) is a bill that supports the authorization of existing immigration law, it makes critical changes to our legitimate immigration programs, secures the border, and gives an administrative answer for the present recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Instead of evacuating illegal immigrants who have no legitimate right to stay in the U.S., it rewards lawbreaking with impermanent lawful status and work approval. cost it puts on government offices and citizens. For the Department of Homeland Security, which manages U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, to guarantee that no immigrant speaks to a risk to the nation requires uses at a few phases, including individual verifications, individual meetings and preparing citizenship and naturalization testing for new immigrants.. ...

Research suggests immigration enforcement deters unauthorized immigration[80] but has no impact on crime rates.[15][16][13][196] Immigration enforcement is costly and may divert resources from other forms of law enforcement.[80][196] Tougher immigration enforcement has been associated with greater migrant deaths, as migrants take riskier routes and use the services of smugglers.[80][197] Tough border enforcement may also encourage unauthorized immigrants to settle in the United States, rather than regularly travel across the border where they may be captured.[80][198] Immigration enforcement programs have been shown to lower employment and wages among unauthorized immigrants, while increasing their participation in the informal economy.[80] Research finds that Secure Communities, an immigration enforcement program which led to a quarter of a million of detentions (when the study was published; November 2014), had no observable impact on the crime rate.[15] A 2015 study found that the 1986 ...
This case is very important to the immigrant community. Immigrants know that their immigration status is often used against them to deprive them of benefits such as salary owed to them, salary increases, overtime pay, and promotions to higher job classifications, which also pay more. Landlords often refuse to return deposits on apartment rentals and contractors often refuse to pay immigrant subcontractor money they are owed under construction contracts. This case is just one of many in which Federal Courts have declared that undocumented immigrants have the right to sue for damages, injuries, contract rights, and many other benefits under the law and that their immigration status will not be considered. ...

For the purposes of this program announcement (PA), an immigrant refers to a foreign-born person who enters the United States without U.S. citizenship. The large number of immigrants in the past two decades may have already had a major impact on the social and economic structure of the United States. American immigration policies have been shaped by a duality of economic and humanitarian concerns. Humanitarian concerns are reflected in the preferential treatment of refugees as well as the importance of family reunification as ...
Major findings indicate that both illegal and legal female immigrants often avoid CAs health care system due to fear of retribution in terms of immigration status and naturalization process SAN FRANCISCO, April 18, 2001 ---A sampling of health care providers across California shows that many low-income pregnant immigrant women in the state are still reluctant to seek free medical care despite government assurances their immigration status will not be affected. There is almost a climate of fear and suspicion among immigrants, Grace J. Yoo, assistant professor of Asian American Studies at S.F. State. They dont seek preventative care and pregnant women dont get prenatal care. Many times they seek medical care only when it is an emergency. Added Yoo: There seems to be a sense among many immigrants that the political system is decidedly anti-immigrant. Due to the complex nature of immigration laws, many immigrants have long-standing fears that they or family members will be deported if they ...
At first glance, both the United States and Western Europe appear to face much the same immigration predicament. Both have been the on the receiving end of continuous mass immigration from developing countries for two generations. Yet in Europe immigration represents a pressing national security issue, in large part due to the provenance of Europes problematic newcomers. For two generations, adjacent, formerly colonial regions have been sending migrants to the West. But in the European case those neighboring, undeveloped countries are most often Muslim. A senior Moroccan official says, Every country with an Arab or Muslim immigrant population now faces the problem of sleeper cells.1 On the other hand, Americas problem immigrants are mainly Latinos. Latin America is the one major region on the globe without a broad Muslim presence, and Latinos register high rates of military enlistment and other indices of identification with the host country. Americas immigration problem is not one of ...
Labor, civil rights, environmental, LGBT and other progressive leaders and activists joined immigrant rights organizations to demonstrate their solidarity and a commitment to reform.. Public opinion clearly shows that voters want to change our inhumane and broken immigration policies that tear families apart. A recent poll by The Washington Post showed that 70 percent of all voters support creating a path to citizenship.. Families across the country resoundingly support immigration reform, so why is Congress stalling?. Several months ago, the Senates Gang of Eight held a press conference to announce their immigration principles. They said to expect a bill in early March. No bill was introduced.. The Fair Immigration Reform Movement - a coalition of the largest immigrant rights organizations - set a deadline of March 21 for a bill to be introduced. They missed that deadline too.. Last week, we heard it would be this week. Today, we heard it would be tomorrow.. We do not take seriously promises ...

In May, 2006, after the Immigration Marches, I started seeing the cable news channels talking very negatively about illegal immigration. I found many internet sites were talking negatively about legal and illegal immigration issues as well. Since I do research on the job, I started conducting Immigration research on the web. I joined several Immigration websites and I researched others. I´ve learned so much about Immigration issues over the last year. What ...

Originally posted at New America Media [1].. by Jonah Most. There is little chance that the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution will be repealed -- but thats not the point, according to law experts and advocates of immigrant communities. The objective of conservatives who are pushing to deny birthright citizenship -- an issue that resurfaced in this weeks Republican presidential debate -- may simply be to change the conversation, to move the goal post on the immigration debate. And even though they will likely not be successful in changing the Constitution any time soon, the effect of the debate itself has already led to a climate of fear among immigrant communities and -- in particular -- women and children ...

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: We begin todays show with yet another tragedy on the U.S.-Mexico border, where a 16-year-old Guatemalan boy died in U.S. custody Monday after spending a week in immigration jail. Carlos Gregorio Hernandez Vasquez died at a Border Patrol station at Weslaco, Texas, after being diagnosed with the flu. He was not hospitalized. This marks the fifth death of a Guatemalan child apprehended by Border Patrol since December. Before last year, it had been more than a decade since a child died in the custody of U.S. immigration officials.. AMY GOODMAN: Carlos Hernandez was arrested near the border in the South Rio Grande Valley May 13th and taken to a processing center in McAllen, Texas, where hundreds of migrants are held in large pens and forced to sleep on mats. U.S. law typically requires minors to be sent to facilities operated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services within three days of being detained, but Carlos was held in McAllen for more than double that time. As a result of the deadly coronavirus pandemic, which has resulted in a global recession, remittances to India are likely to drop by 23 percent from USD 83 billion last year to USD 64 billion this year, the World Bank has said.. In India, remittances are projected to fall by about 23 percent in 2020, to USD 64 billion - a striking contrast with the growth of 5.5 percent and receipts of USD 83 billion seen in 2019, the World Bank said in a report on impact of COVID-19 on migration and remittances released on Wednesday.. Globally remittances are projected to decline sharply by about 20 percent this year due to the economic crisis induced by the COVID-19 pandemic and shutdown.. The projected fall, which would be the sharpest decline in recent history, is largely due to a fall in the wages and employment of migrant workers, who tend to be more vulnerable to loss of employment and wages during an economic crisis in a host country, the bank said.. Remittances are a vital source of income for ...
North Carolina is an attractive state for individuals of all ages. Our states colleges and universities and military bases draw young adults. Job opportunities in both lower-skill and high-tech industries bring more individuals to the state. And, when individuals are done working, they are increasingly choosing North Carolina as a place to retire. These factors, combined with the nationwide increase in international migration from 1990-2010, pulled many individuals to the state. Today, nearly half of all North Carolina adults (18+) were born outside of the state.. The graph below shows the proportion of North Carolinas adult residents who were born outside the state for each decennial census from 1850 through 2010. Until 1930, fewer than 10% of the North Carolinas adult residents were born outside of the state. This proportion increased steadily through 1950 and then rose more rapidly. By 1980, more than a quarter of the states adult population was not native to North Carolina.. Migration ...
Ms Lorena Rivas1. 1Griffith Criminology Institute, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. The impact of immigration detention on those held in these facilities is of increasing concern to human rights advocates and policy makers (McLoughlin & Warin, 2008). Much of the current literature details the prevalence of a range of issues that male detainees experience, however little is known about how women experience immigration detention and the impact of detention on their social wellbeing. Part of this gap is due to the reduction of womens experiences into categories such as carer or mother. However, women are likely to experience unique challenges in immigration detention beyond such identity categories. This study aims to elucidate how women uniquely experience immigration detention in Australia (Rivas & Bull, 2018). The study examines the impact of immigration detention on womens social well-being by combining both quantitative and qualitative data derived from Commonwealth Ombudsman ...
As expected, Canadas population grew through the final quarter of 2014, reaching 37.7 million people by the end of last year. What was unexpected, however, was the pace of growth: in adding only 27,000 new residents, Canada posted its smallest three-month gain since quarterly estimates were first published by Statistics Canada back in 1972. To put this into further perspective, the national population has added an average of 46,000 people in the fourth quarter over the past five years (2009 through 2013).. The primary factor driving this slow-down was the net loss of people through international migration. This decline was driven by a net loss of 40,000 non-permanent residents in Q4 2014, as the four-year window originally made available for temporary foreign workers to stay in Canada comes to a close on April 1, 2015. In light of this, we should expect further declines in the number of non-permanent residents through Q1 2015.. The loss of non-permanent residents was not helped much by the slow ...

CONGRESSWOMAN LORETTA SANCHEZ DEMANDS A VOTE ON COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM. WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46) today signed a discharge petition demanding that comprehensive immigration reform be brought to a vote. The petition would force a vote on H.R. 15, the bipartisan Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, legislation that would help secure our border, protect our workers, unite our families, provide an earned pathway to citizenship and create jobs.. I am signing this discharge petition because enough is enough - the American people demand a vote on comprehensive immigration reform. Its been almost a year since the Senate passed this bipartisan package and report after report has demonstrated the economic imperative of reform, said Rep. Sanchez. I am demanding a vote because weve been saying the time is now for too long. Action on immigration reform is overdue and I am ready to put the pressure on every member to take a ...
Objective: To assess evidence for residential mobility in childhood having an adverse association with health outcomes through the life course.. Methods: A systematic search of medical and social sciences literature was undertaken to identify research defining residential mobility as an independent variable and in which health outcomes were described and objectively measured. Studies were excluded that investigated international migration for asylum or were limited to educational outcomes. Two reviewers assessed each study using quality criteria with particular attention to the consideration of confounders and potential for bias. Data were extracted for analysis using a structured form.. Results: Twenty-two studies were included for this review. Outcomes identified in association with residential mobility included: higher levels of behavioural and emotional problems; increased teenage pregnancy rates; accelerated initiation of illicit drug use; adolescent depression; reduced continuity of ...
In this presentation, perspectives are given on past and current demographic trends for American metropolitan areas. Changing demographics suggest a number of provocative issues and questions for transforming to smarter urban landscapes and communities. The populations and land areas of metropolitan America are dispersed outside the core central cities. The current sprawling structure of urban America is an artifact of the post-World War II baby and housing booms; metropolitan development patterns reflect not only of the rising dominance of automobility, but also the very different demographics extant then than today. A pressing, multifaceted demographic disconnect now exists between demography and physical form. Demographic trends are presented for three time periods: the span since the 1946-1964 baby boom; the decade between the 2000 and 2010 censuses; and post-2010. Trends are detailed for components of change (fertility, mortality, international migration, domestic migration) and measures ...
This Economic Insights article examines trends in the citizenship rate (the percent of immigrants who become Canadian citizens) among recent immigrants who arrived in Canada five to nine years before a given census. The citizenship rate among recent immigrants aged 18 and over peaked in 1996 and declined continuously to 2016. Most of this decline occurred after 2006. The citizenship rate declined most among immigrants with low family income, poor official language skills, and lower levels of education. There was also significant variation in the decline among immigrants from different source regions, with the decline largest among Chinese immigrants. ...
Dutch EST Ambassador Hester Mennes welcomed two guest lecturers:. Job Cohen, previously mayor of Amsterdam and former state secretary of Justice in the Netherlands, joined the discussion on the meaning of solidarity and cultural differences from local, national and European level perspectives. Besides his current work as a professor in Municipal Law, he presides the oldest refugee foundation of the Netherlands, UAF.. Professor Hein de Haas, former co-director of Oxfords International Migration Institute, discussed the current EU policy response and debunked a number of myths regarding present-day migration. Besides lecturing at Oxford, De Haas has consulted and advised institutions like the European Union and the International Organization for Migration.. This report provides a historical background, a legal framework and an approach to an integration policy on a social and political scale. On behalf of the European Student Think Tank Board we would like to thank Hester for her brilliant piece ...
In the absence of comprehensive registration of population and vital statistics, demographic surveys are the primary source of data used in monitoring the progress and evaluating the impact of the population program of the country. The Philippine Population Program was officially launched in 1970. Since then, it has undergone many changes in its policy and program directions. In the beginning, the program was centered on fertility reduction and contraceptive distribution, using a clinic-based approach. In the 1970s, the family planning program shifted to a family welfare approach, adopting a combined clinic and community-based delivery approach. In the 1980s, the population policy was restated, calling for the broadening of population concerns beyond fertility reduction to cover family formation, the status of women, maternal and child health, morbidity and mortality, population distribution and urbanization, internal and international migration, and population structure (Commission on ...
