A criteria-based nationwide Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) system was recently implemented in Denmark. We described the system and studied its ability to triage patients according to the severity of their condition by analysing hospital admission and case-fatality risks. This was a register-based follow-up study of all 1-1-2 calls in a 6-month period that were triaged according to the Danish Index - the new criteria-based dispatch protocol. Danish Index data were linked with hospital and vital status data from national registries. Confidence intervals (95%) for proportions with binomial data were computed using exact methods. To test for trend the Wald test was used. Information on level of emergency according to the Danish Index rating was available for 67,135 patients who received ambulance service. Emergency level A (urgent cases) accounted for 51.4% (n = 34,489) of patients, emergency level B for 46.3% (n = 31,116), emergency level C for 2.1% (n = 1,391) and emergency level D for 0.2% (n = 139).

Australias ABC News is reporting that the dispatch system of the NSW Ambulance Service has been infected with a computer virus.. As a result, according to the radio news report at midday on Sunday 13 February, emergency calls are being serviced by a manual system while staff work to clear the virus and return the ten-year-old dispatch system to service.. A report by AAP said the virus had first been detected at 1pm on Saturday. A day later, general manager of operations Mike Willis was unable to say how long it would take for the system to return to service. However, he said that emergency calls had not been delayed as far as he knew. ®. Sponsored: Webcast: Why you need managed detection and response ...
An emergency medical dispatcher is a professional telecommunicator, tasked with the gathering of information related to medical emergencies, the provision of assistance and instructions by voice, prior to the arrival of emergency medical services (EMS), and the dispatching and support of EMS resources responding to an emergency call. The term "emergency medical dispatcher" is also a certification level and a professional designation, certified through the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International (APCO), the National Academies of Emergency Dispatch, and PowerPhone, Inc. Many dispatchers, whether certified or not, will dispatch using a standard Emergency Medical Dispatch protocol. A dispatch function of sorts has always been a feature of both emergency medical service and its predecessor, ambulance service. The information processing, if only to identify the problem and the location of the patient, has always been a logical part of the process of call completion. Prior ...
What does this all mean for investors? The obvious concern is that removal of priority dispatch and exposure to balancing markets will increase revenue risk for renewables generators.. So, why is the EU removing these rules on priority dispatch once the mainstay of the Commissions wholesale market rules? The main argument is to help reduce the costs of balancing supply and demand, and managing network constraints. Generally, it is most economic to dispatch renewables first because their running costs are close to zero regardless of whether they have priority dispatch.. But, when there is surplus generation, the most economic option is sometimes to curtail renewables ahead of other plant. For example, turning down an inflexible gas plant only to restart and ramp it up a few hours later can be expensive and inefficient. By contrast, wind generators can be turned down relatively easily.. Therefore, giving renewables priority dispatch can sometimes increase the overall costs of managing the system. ...

All emergency calls, regardless of the emergency number on which they originate, are routed to Dispatch Centres; in German Leitstelle. Until the year 2000 it was very common that every district had its own dispatch centre which, in a way, was quite ineffective. At present more and more trans-regional dispatch centres are being built. That means that all 144 calls in Styria, for example, are routed to the same dispatch centre in Graz no matter where in Styria the caller is located. The same trend can be seen in other federal states. A system similar to the U.S.-based 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point concept is not being used due to the significantly different nature of the calls for EMS, the fire brigade or the police. Once a call via the local emergency number is placed, a call taker will answer and ask the caller about the nature of the emergency. While the caller is being interviewed about call specifics, the call taker is already working on the computer, which will provide prompt ...
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate (a) the differences between men and women in symptom profile, allocated life support level (LSL), and presence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), life-threatening condition (LTC), or death and (b) whether a computer-based decision support system could improve the allocation of LSL. PATIENTS: All patients in Göteborg, Sweden, who called the dispatch center because of chest pain during 3 months (n = 503) were included in this study. METHODS: Age, sex, and symptom profile were background variables. Based on these, we studied allocation of LSL by the dispatchers and its relationship to AMI, LTC, and death. All evaluations were made from a sex perspective. Finally, we studied the potential benefit of using a statistical model for allocating LSL. RESULTS: The advanced life support level (ALSL) was used equally frequently for men and women. There was no difference in age or symptom profile between men and women in relation to allocation. However, the ...

Click image to hear a recent example of a Last Call, broadcast by a dispatcher for the Omaha (NE) Police Department on May 26, 2015, in honor of detective Kerrie Orozco, gunned down while serving a warrant on May 20th.. As with many "high risk/low frequency" incidents, to cite Gordon Graham, there seems to be a large inconsistency in Americas 9-1-1 dispatch centers as to how these calls should be handled. Given the extremely stressful, emotional environment during which a Last Call broadcast is to be made, trying to come up with what to say, when, and by whom from scratch, in the immediate aftermath of a death can be problematic, to say the least. Having a procedure in place - just as many public safety agencies have Standard Operating Procedures for funeral and Honor Guard protocols - is a kind of procedural insurance policy that pays its dividends in having mapped out in advance how you should proceed, during a time of extreme grief, in formulating the what/when/how/etc. considerations needed ...

We have scientific consensus that global temperatures are rising. Despite this, debate and argument continues about whether global warming is occurring, the extent, possible causes and potential solutions to the problem.. In early January 2013, as this debate continued to rage, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology was confronted with a dilemma. Forecast temperatures were so extreme that they exceeded the colour range available for its isotherm charts. Isotherm charts are used to indicate temperature across the continent, and have lines that join points of equal temperature. Different colours, starting with cool ...
MONDAY, June 29, 2020 (HealthDay News) -- Wildfire smoke has an almost immediate harmful effect on the heart and lungs, researchers say.. Using data from wildfire seasons between 2010 and 2015 in British Columbia, Canada, the researchers linked exposure to elevated levels of fine particles in smoke with ambulance dispatches for heart and lung conditions. Dispatches rose within an hour of exposure to wildfire smoke, the investigators found.. In addition, the findings showed that among people with diabetes, the risk of health issues rose within 48 hours of smoke exposure.. The study included more than 670,000 ambulance dispatch calls from more than 500,000 people. The report was published June 24 in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.. "We have long known about the harmful health effects of wildfire smoke," said lead author Jiayun Angela Yao, who did the study as part of her doctoral studies at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver.. "But its alarming to see just how quickly ...
Call-takers tethered to phone headsets are typing vital information into computers and tossing it to others who assign police, fire and medical rescue units. A Chronicle investigation of San Franciscos 911 dispatch system found that 27 percent of first responders arrive late on the scene of high-priority medical emergencies - increasing the medical risks to the stricken. The newspapers review of about 200,000 emergency medical calls during the past four years found that at least 439 people died while waiting for a late ambulance or after delayed medical help arrived. According to 911 medical experts, the elements of a model system include well-trained dispatchers, a sufficient number of ambulances and medics, efficient record-keeping, prompt responses to all neighborhoods, systemwide accountability, and a high rate of success in saving victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Experts also recommend the hiring of additional paramedics for early morning and peak hours when delays are worse, and more

A device for identifying a specific station, among a plurality of geographically-dispersed stations represented by a common phone number and serviced by a common PBX, which has initiated an emergency 9-1-1 telephone call. The specific station having initiated the call is identified to the appropriate public safety answering point (PSAP) which is connected in an enhanced 9-1-1 emergency call network. Typically, the PSAP and PBX have different protocols. The device functions to convert the protocol of the PBX to the protocol of the emergency call network. Further, it assigns an arbitrary designation representing the specific station identified as having initiated the emergency call. Further, the invention transmits the arbitrary designation to the appropriate PSAP for responding to the call.
Introduction: Survival of people in cardiac arrest depends on EMS response time. Laypeople may use both national (155) and European (112) phone numbers for requesting EMS in the Czech Republic. The 155 medical dispatchers deal with the request directly while 112 fire-brigade operators have to transfer the call to EMS. It was unclear, whether use of the different systems may cause any delay when calling for help. This study was aimed to compare times needed for contacting medical dispatch.. Methods: A prospective observational study was performed during a 1-month period in the Hradec Kralove region (0.55 mil.) as a part of the EUROCALL study conducted on behalf of ERC. The 180 test calls (6 per day) were simulating request for EMS and randomly distributed to follow diurnal distribution, day of the week, use of a landline or a mobile phone, and 155 or 112 numbers. Multiple successive time intervals were recorded with an online timer. Data analysis was performed using Prism 6.0 for Mac OS X ...
A quick update on the Columbus Dispatch poll: The folks at the Dispatch have kindly provided the full text of the questions asked on their final pre-election survey on Ohio Issues 1 through 5. The full text appears on the jump. The language used for the Dispatch poll was greatly condensed as compared to the actual ballot language (as described by Dispatch reporter Darrel Rowland), but not nearly as condensed as I had guessed. Looking only at the text of the descriptions (and excluding the titles) the poll questions varied in length from 64 to 128 words while the actual language varied from 210 to 932 words. In my original post, I had guessed incorrectly that the poll had used the even more condensed language that appeared in the graphic sidebar alongside the original poll story. The complete language used by the Columbus Dispatch poll follows below. Use the links to see the actual ballot language for Issues 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5. NOV. 8, 2005, STATEWIDE BALLOT ISSUES. To dispatchers the guys and girls that are on the calls are our responsibility. My job every day is to get each and every one of my girls and guys and patients home safely. We want everyone to return home to their families and loved ones, and sadly on September 11th, 2001 that did not happen. The dispatchers could not have imagined it would have turned out that way.. and the first responders that were sent into the towers did so willingly. It was their job to try to- and they succeeded in- saving many lives. At the same time so many lost their own lives. So many were forever effected. There is no doubt in my mind that it sticks with the dispatchers every single day of their lives. ...
What really made the dispatch gross was the resident mice. Id experienced one of the furballs run over my shoe while I was taking a call one night. I felt the sensation and looked down, only to see a tail disappearing under my console desk. We had traps set up through-out the room. Arguments ensued when we heard the snap, knowing a mouse had been caught in one of our traps. No one wanted to dig around between equipment to retrieve the trap, much less dispose of the carcass. Over the shift the verbal sparring continued until one brave soul finally gave in and found the trap, with the now stiff, and sometimes bloody, remains. He, or she, would stomp out of dispatch and head out ot the bathroom, where the tiny carcass would be placed in a trashcan. The trap would then be reset in the same spot as before ...
Downloadable! This paper describes three approaches to assigning tasks to earth observing satellites (EOS). A fast and simple priority dispatch method is described and shown to produce acceptable schedules most of the time. A look ahead algorithm is then introduced that outperforms the dispatcher by about 12% with only a small increase in run time. These algorithms set the stage for the introduction of a genetic algorithm that uses job permutations as the population. The genetic approach presented here is novel in that it uses two additional binary variables, one to allow the dispatcher to occasionally skip a job in the queue and another to allow the dispatcher to occasionally allocate the worst position to the job. These variables are included in the recombination step in a natural way. The resulting schedules improve on the look ahead by as much as 15% at times and 3% on average. We define and use the window-constrained packing problem to model the bare bones of the EOS scheduling problem.

Jeff J. Clawson, MD. Dispatch Priority Training: Strengthening the weak link. In the last ten years, the EMS response in this country has undergone an incredible evolution. Improvement has been the general trend, exemplified by the move from untrained mortuary services and first aid vehicles, to EMT ambulances, and finally ALS paramedic systems. Responders expertise has been upgraded, and the fact that EMTs now receive hundreds of hours and paramedics over a thousand hours of intensive emergency training indicates the importance of such training in EMS. But at the center of this well-trained, specialized, and expensive EMS configuration deciding whether or not to respond, who responds, and how they respond, is the emergency dispatcher, who likely has not been given even a single hour of emergency medical instruction. For many years, emergency dispatchers have remained the weakest link in the EMS chain of response.. In November, 1976, the Department of Transportation developed a program for ...
