The evolutionary history of vertebrate cranial placodes II. Evolution of ectodermal patterning. - Oxford Neuroscience
Cranial placodes are evolutionary innovations of vertebrates. However, they most likely evolved by redeployment, rewiring and diversification of preexisting cell types and patterning mechanisms. In the second part of this review we compare vertebrates with other animal groups to elucidate the evolutionary history of ectodermal patterning. We show that several transcription factors have ancient bilaterian roles in dorsoventral and anteroposterior regionalisation of the ectoderm. Evidence from amphioxus suggests that ancestral chordates then concentrated neurosecretory cells in the anteriormost non-neural ectoderm. This anterior proto-placodal domain subsequently gave rise to the oral siphon primordia in tunicates (with neurosecretory cells being lost) and anterior (adenohypophyseal, olfactory, and lens) placodes of vertebrates. Likewise, tunicate atrial siphon primordia and posterior (otic, lateral line, and epibranchial) placodes of vertebrates probably evolved from a posterior proto-placodal region in
Protein breakthrough sheds new light on kidney disease, cancer, mental retardation | Channels - McGill University
McGill researchers discover how Bicaudal-C protein controls RNA synthesis of other proteins McGill University researchers have uncovered the long sought-after mechanism that controls the synthesis of a specific protein in fruit flies, a breakthrough with important implications for the understanding of polycystic kidney disease, cancer and mental retardation in humans, according to a study published in the November issue of the journal Developmental Cell. The study was led by Dr. Paul Lasko, Chair of McGills Department of Biology, with colleagues from McGill and Frances Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). It was funded by the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC). Their research focused on the Bicaudal-C protein found in Drosophila, a genus of fruit fly, and how it controls the process by which ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesizes other proteins. Bicaudal-C is one of the estimated 77 per cent of genes implicated in human disease that have obvious counterparts in fruit flies. Dr.

Selenium Function in Horses | Equinews
Selenium, an essential nutrient as well as an environmental toxicant, is best known as a component of the selenium-dependent enzyme glutathione peroxidase. As part of the cellular defense system, selenium, like vitamin E, functions much as a biological antioxidant, and indeed there are a number of deficiency symptoms of selenium that may be partially corrected by vitamin E and vice versa.
Novel skeletogenic patterning roles for the olfactory pit | Development
The cranial placodes are focal thickenings of the ectoderm and include the olfactory, lens, otic, trigeminal, hypophyseal, lateral line and epibranchial placodes. Placodes are induced within the non-neural ectoderm outside of the neural plate (Couly and Le Douarin, 1985), within a pre-placodal domain (Bailey et al., 2006; Bhattacharyya et al., 2004; Schlosser, 2005; Schlosser and Ahrens, 2004) where the olfactory and lens precursors are intermingled (Bhattacharyya et al., 2004; Streit, 2002). FGFs are required for the earliest steps of olfactory placode specification (Bailey et al., 2006; Kawauchi et al., 2005) and then later for formation of the nasal passages (Kawauchi et al., 2005).. In the chicken, the olfactory placode is first visible at the end of cranial neural crest cell migration, coincident with the appearance of the pharyngeal arches [stage 15 (Hamburger and Hamilton, 1951)]. Twenty-four hours later (stage 20), the nasal pit has invaginated and, simultaneously, ...

Specification of ectoderm restricts the size of the animal plate and patterns neurogenesis in sea urchin embryos | Development
Treatments that enhance oral or aboral specification are carried out in embryos in which normal vegetal specification occurs and there is a background of endogenous signaling. To isolate the effects of treatments, we have produced embryos in which vegetal signaling is blocked by co-injection ofΔ -cadherin RNA. Embryos in which Antivin or BMP is co-expressed withΔ -cadherin form permanent blastulae with a thickened animal plate. These embryos are like the Δ-cadherin-only controls; SpNK2.1 is expressed in the thickened ectoderm and up to 50 serotonergic neurons differentiate (Fig. 5A-C; Antivin, 82% of 106 embryos; BMP, 90% of 104 embryos with phenotype). Co-expression of Nodal withΔ -cadherin produces permanent blastulae that have a broad, thickened animal plate. The animal plate ectoderm expresses SpNK2.1 and SpHnf6, as in embryos injected with Δ-cadherin alone (Fig. 5D,E). However, there are only a few serotonergic cells that differentiate (Fig. 5F; 99% of 156 embryos with this phenotype). ...

We are interested how the sensory epithelia of the inner ear that harbor the sensory hair cells develop, how the cells mature, and how these epithelia respond to toxic insults. The overarching goal of this research is to find was to regenerate lost sensory hair cells in mammals. ...

Teratogenicity of bifenox and nitrofen in rodents<...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Teratogenicity of bifenox and nitrofen in rodents. AU - Francis, B. Magnus. PY - 1986/1/1. Y1 - 1986/1/1. N2 - The teratogenicity of the diphenyl ether herbicide bifenox [2,4-dichlorophenyl 3-carboxymethyl-4-nitrophenyl ether] was compared to that of nitrofen [2,4-dichlorophenyl 4-nitrophenyl ether] in rats and in mice. Neither compound increased prenatal mortality in mice. Because nitrofen causes both malformations that are compatible with survival to weaning and a high incidence of perinatal (but not of fetal) mortality, emphasis was placed on postnatal parameters of bifenox toxicity. In rats, bifenox caused a low incidence of bloody tears, but it did not decrease survival to term or to weaning in rats or mice, and did not reduce Harderian gland weight in mice. Because the weight of the Harderian glands is a more objective measure of their status than is the presence of an eye discharge, it is concluded that bifenox is not teratogenic at the levels administered. Nitrofen ...
Evil under the Sun*: August 2008
As all the organic beings, extinct and recent, which have ever lived, can be arranged within a few great classes; and as all within each class have, according to our theory, been connected together by fine gradations, the best, and, if our collections were nearly perfect, the only possible arrangement, would be genealogical; descent being the hidden bond of connexion which naturalists have been seeking under the term of the Natural System. On this view we can understand how it is that, in the eyes of most naturalists, the structure of the embryo is even more important for classification than that of the adult. In two or more groups of animals, however much they may differ from each other in structure and habits in their adult condition, if they pass through closely similar embryonic stages, we may feel assured that they all are descended from one parent-form, and are therefore closely related. Thus, community in embryonic structure reveals community of descent; but dissimilarity in embryonic ...
