Thomas Hunt Morgan (25 September 1866 - 4 December 1945) was an American geneticist and embryologist. Morgan took his PhD at Johns Hopkins University in 1890, and researched embryology while at Bryn Mawr College. After the rediscovery of Mendelian inheritance in 1900, Morgan switched his research to the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. In 1904, E.B. Wilson invited Morgan to join him at Columbia University. This move freed Morgan to focus fully on experimental work.[1] In his famous Fly Room at Columbia, Morgan was able to show that genes are carried on chromosomes and are the mechanical basis of heredity. These discoveries formed the basis of the modern science of genetics. Morgan moved to California in 1928 to head the Division of Biology at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech). Research was focused on genetics and evolution; experimental embryology; physiology; biophysics and biochemistry. He was given the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1933. It was the first one given ...

Haeckels embryo fraud was also exposed early on by Wilhelm His, Sr., professor of anatomy at the university of Leipzig. His showed how that Haeckel had doctored his embryo charts to make them fit his theory and concluded that anyone who engaged in such blatant fraud had forfeited all respect and that Haeckel had eliminated himself from the ranks of scientific research workers of any stature (cited from Shawn Boonstra, Out of Thin Air, p. 47) [excerpted from Lying Evolutionary Art...] Wilhelm His, Sr. (1831-1904) a German embryologist, exposed the hoax in detail in an 1874 publication (Unsere Korperform), and concluded that Haeckel was dishonest and was thereby discredited from the ranks of trustworthy research scientists. It is to be noted that Wilhelm His prepared the scholarly books on embryological development which are the foundation of all modern human embryology. Yet neither Haeckels fraud, nor His expose, has ever been widely discussed in English scientific publications, and never in ...

James G. Wilson (1915-1987) was an embryologist and anatomist, known for his Six Principles of Teratology. In 1960 he co-founded The Teratology Society, and was since then one of its most active members. The James G. Wilson Publication Award is annually presented in recognition of the best paper accepted or published in the journal Birth Defects Research (formerly known as Teratology). Wilsons 6 principles Along with this new awareness of the in utero vulnerability of the developing mammalian embryo came the development and refinement of The Six Principles of Teratology which are still applied today. These principles of teratology were put forth by Jim Wilson in 1959 and in his monograph Environment and Birth Defects.[8] These principles guide the study and understanding of teratogenic agents and their effects on developing organisms: Susceptibility to teratogenesis depends on the genotype of the conceptus and the manner in which this interacts with adverse environmental factors. Susceptibility ...

Huntington disease is progressive neurodegenerative disorder leading to muscle coordination problems, loss of motor function, and mental decline. Huntington disease is one of several diseases caused by an increase in the number of CAG repeats within the coding region of the disease gene (in this case the Huntingtin/HTT gene) and subsequent translation of those repeats into an expanded polyglutamine (polyQ) tract in the protein. Fly stocks in the Bloomington collection that can be used to study Huntington disease are listed here.. General information links for Huntington disease:. ...
Agassiz wrote that evidence of the existence of a Creator, constantly and thoughtfully working among the complicated structures that He has made is found throughout the natural world.2 He concluded that in the living world is clearly seen the intervention of an intelligent Creator and that when we evaluate the living world we can see the mental operations of the Creator at every step.3. Education. Agassiz was born in the village of Montier in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Like many naturalists of the time, Agassiz was educated as a physician. He studied with several prominent German biologists, including zoologist Lorenz Oken and embryologist Ignatius Döllinger. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Erlangen in 1830, he traveled to Paris to study comparative anatomy under the most renowned comparative anatomist in all Europe, Baron Georges Cuvier.4. Cuvier, the founder of the field of paleontology, was so impressed with Agassizs work on fossil fish that he ...

Andrologys institutionalization as a field of professional and academic medicine began in the late 1960s. At first the term andrology applied solely to the clinical discipline however, over the last 30 years, andrology has grown and now covers the activities of reproductive biologists, embryologists, medical laboratory scientists and even geneticists and ethicists. ...
Depending of the age of the women and the quality of the embryos, 1, 2 or more embryos will be chosen for the embryo transfer. During the embryo transfer the embryologist will get the embryos ready in the catheter. The doctor will insert the catheter through the cervix and when is it in the right place, they will place the embryos into the womb. The transfer is done under ultrasound visualisation through your abdomen and in most of the cases you will be able to see the injection of the embryos on the screen (actually you see just a bubble of fluid, as embryos are too small ...
Im home, and on bed rest. Dr. Fabulous didnt end up doing the transfer, but the owner of the clinic/ top RE, aka Dr. Wonderful, did. He did my egg retrieval for IVF #2, and did one of my ultrasounds last week. When I last saw him, I asked if he planned to do my retrieval again this time, but he was going on holiday for a few days. He then said that anyone can do the retrieval, but transfer is very important. I remember him looking at me and saying that he would do my transfer. Honestly, I would have been very happy with Dr. Fabulous or the RE who did the transfer for IVF #2. Anyway, I was pleased when the OR nurse told me that Dr. Wonderful would in fact do todays transfer.. There was a slight hiccup when the embryologist came in to speak with me about the embryo quality, and then told me that I could only transfer two. I told the OR nurse that I wanted to speak with Dr. Wonderful. He arrived quickly, and after a bit of back and forth, looking at my chart (4 previous cycles, 9 embryos, 1 ...
Credit: Prof. Natan Shaked/AFTAU EurekAlert.org Tel Aviv University (TAU) researchers have developed a safe and accurate 3D imaging method to identify sperm cells moving at a high speed. The research, a study of which was published in Science Advances on April 10, was led by Prof. Natan Shaked of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at TAUs Faculty of Engineering together with TAU doctoral student Gili Dardikman-Yoffe. The new technology could provide doctors with the ability to select the highest-quality sperm for injection into an egg during IVF treatment, potentially increasing a womans chance of becoming pregnant and giving birth to a healthy baby. The IVF procedure was invented to help fertility problems, explains Prof. Shaked. The most common type of IVF today is intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), which involves sperm selection by a clinical embryologist and injection into the womans egg. To that end, an effort is made to select the sperm cell that is most likely to create a
Studies have shown that sperm classified as morphologically normal at conventional optical resolution and magnification (x200-x400) may carry ultrastructural defects. Many of these abnormalities have been linked to hidden chromosomal defects, high levels of DNA fragmentation, abnormal centriolar function, etc. (1, 2). These aberrations may impede fertilization, lead to post-fertilization arrest or even disrupt embryo development (2). IMSI is an approach developed from a method of sperm evaluation, first described in 2002 by Bartoov and colleagues and denominated motile sperm organelle morphology examination (MSOME) (27). In order to apply this evaluation technique, observations need to be performed at x6000-6600 magnification (1). Performance of sperm selection along with MSOME requires the use of specific equipment. This should be an inverted light microscope with high-power optics intended for differential interference contrast and enhanced by digital imaging, which allows the embryologist ...
Egg cryopreservation, preserving eggs by cooling to sub-zero temperatures, includes freezing eggs which first took place in 1986. Since then, over 500 children worldwide have been conceived from frozen eggs.. Vitrification is an alternative to egg freezing, first applied in humans in 1999. The process involves cooling cells to form an ice-free transparent glass. Since this process was first used, there have been well over 450 births reported.. The review adds that vitrification can be simpler, more efficient and cheaper than conventional freezing under certain circumstances. It is quicker than freezing for a small group of eggs collected from a single donor, whereas freezing may be more efficient when eggs are to be stored for several women on the same day. Expensive cooling apparatus is not required but vitrification consumables are currently expensive and embryologists may have to devote more time to vitrification than freezing.. As the application of vitrification for human egg storage is ...
At the time of your embryo transfer, the embryologist will discuss with you the quality and number of embryos and whether any would be suitable for freezing for use in the future. The transfer will take place back in the procedure room, but usually requires no sedation or anaesthetic. The embryos, once selected, will be transferred using a special catheter, a fine plastic tube which is inserted through the cervix and into the womb.. Once the procedure has been completed, you will be discharged home and advised to wait for at least two weeks before taking a pregnancy test to see if the transfer was successful. This can be the hardest part of the process but we suggest you carry on life as normally as possible. After the pregnancy test has been taken, we will either carry out an ultrasound scan or we will organise an appointment for you to discuss the next steps.. ...
We tried to have a baby for more than 3 years & suffered a miscarriage in 2011. Our first IVF cycle in California was unsuccessful. Shortly after moving to Las Vegas, we were ready to try again. Red Rock Fertility was highly recommended by my husbands new colleagues, and after reading reviews and meeting Dr. Littman, we chose her. I cannot thank our new patient coordinator, Monica, enough! She was really helpful and answered all my questions. She felt like a friend. When our embryos came back abnormal, we made a quick decision to use frozen embryos from a previous cycle and the embryologist, Dee, and Dr. Littman made it happen in the little time-frame we had! We love Dr. Littman, our Treatment Coordinator, Leticia, and the rest of the team at Red Rock Fertility Center!. ...
Antievolutionists often express outrage over alleged incivility from those who oppose their efforts to evade the establishment clause of the First Amendment. But they have no difficulty in dishing out the abuse themselves. Here is a sample from the Invidious Comparisons thread that documents egregious behavior on the part of the religious antievolution advocates.. IDC advocate Jonathan Wells:. These critics include embryologists, paleontologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, medical doctors, philosophers, and even lawyers. Unfortunately, the North American science-and-religion establishment has largely turned a deaf ear to these critics, preferring instead to abandon classical theology and embrace metaphysical materialism and moral relativism. But I see the situation as analogous to the last years of Soviet communism. A small, powerful elite controls all the official information outlets while the evidence against the official position swells quietly, like a wave building offshore. Someday ...

The sperm aspiration methods from the epididymis (MESA, PESA) or the testes (TESA) are simple, but are usually blindly performed and can cause testicular tissue damage such as haematoma, cysts and testicular atrophy. Testicular biopsy (TESE) is recommended by the international scientific literature as a more effective method of sperm retrieval and it is associated with fewer complications. For this reason, in our Unit, the surgical sperm retrieval is performed by testicular biopsy (TESE) by specialized surgeons.. The procedure takes place on the day of egg collection with intravenous or local anaesthesia. The small testicular tissue pieces are processed by the embryologist in order to retrieve any available sperm. Following the retrieval, ICSI can be performed. Any excess sperm can be cryopreserved for future use to avoid performing another biopsy.. ...
Located ventrally in the head capsule (just below the brain and esophagus) is another complex of fused ganglia (jointly called the subesophageal ganglion). Embryologists believe this structure contains neural elements from the three primitive body segments that merged with the head to form mouthparts. In modern insects, the subesophageal ganglion innervates not only mandibles, maxillae, and labium, but also the hypopharynx, salivary glands, and neck muscles. A pair of circumesophageal connectives loop around the digestive system to link the brain and subesophageal complex together.. In the thorax, three pairs of thoracic ganglia (sometimes fused) control locomotion by innervating the legs and wings. Thoracic muscles and sensory receptors are also associated with these ganglia. Similarly, abdominal ganglia control movements of abdominal muscles. Spiracles in both the thorax and abdomen are controlled by a pair of lateral nerves that arise from each segmental ganglion (or by a median ventral nerve ...
Retrograde ejaculation is a rare disorder in which sperm is abnormally ejaculated into the bladder and therefore is found in the mans urine.. This problem can be solved via IVF, with the isolation of sperm from the mans urine. However, the number and quality of sperm cells is usually low and therefore ICSI is the preferred method of fertilization. Specialized embryologists are essential for success.. ...
My morning started off with a wonderful 30 minute massage. For those of you who know me I absolutely hate to be touched so this was a big accomplishment for me. It was so relaxing and I would love to go again. After that was over they brought me down to the OR and prepped me for transfer. The embryologist came in and gave me a very brief rundown of things. He said that we had three absolutely perfect Day 4 morulas and one with minor fragmentation that he would recommend transferring today. He said that the remaining 19 were still growing but we do know that some of them (three I think) are of poor quality. He said that we cant take any guesses about having any to freeze at this point as it is just too early to tell. He will check tomorrow morning to see if there are any expanding blasts, and if there are he will freeze those. They will also be checked again on Monday and anything that made it to blast will also be frozen. If we end up with anything to freeze we are freezing only one per straw. ...

This fascinating intellectual history is the first critical study of the work of Elie Metchnikoff, the founding father of modern immunology. Metchnikoff authored and championed the theory that phagocytic cells actively defend the host body against pathogens and diseased cells. His program developed from comparative embryological studies that sought to establish genealogical relations between species at the dawn of the Darwinian revolution. In this scientific biography, Tauber and Chernyak explore ore Metchnikoffs development as an embryologist, showing how it prepared him to propose his theory of host-pathogen interaction. They discuss the profound impact of Darwins theory of evolution on Metchnikoffs progress, and the influence of 19th century debates on vitalism, teleology, and mechanism. As a case study of scientific discovery, this work offers lucid insight into the process of creative science and its dependence on cultural and philosophic sources. Denudation and sperm injection interval timing: impact on outcome of intracytoplasmic sperm injection Fatma AletebiDepartment of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, King Abdulaziz University, Soliman Fakeeh Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi ArabiaBackground: Given the importance of timing of denudation and oocyte injection during assisted reproductive technology cycles, a study was undertaken of the impact of timing on the outcome of intracytoplasmic sperm injection in a cohort of patients from a private in vitro fertilization center. Methods: The study included patients who underwent fresh intracytoplasmic sperm injection-embryo transfer by a single embryologist and gynecologist over a two-year period (January 2008 to March 2010). The primary outcome measure was the number of mature oocytes, and clinical pregnancy was the secondary outcome measure. Results: There was no significant difference between the three groups with respect to female age, but Group 3 showed a higher mean number of cumulus oopherus (14.46 versus 14
