Downloadable (with restrictions)! The authors provide direct evidence on the effect of health insurance on health outcomes by examining the dramatic increases in the eligibility of pregnant women for the Medicaid program between 1979 and 1992. They find that the 30-percentage-point rise in Medicaid eligibility significantly lowered the incidence of low birth weight and infant mortality. Targeted changes in Medicaid eligibility that were restricted to specific low-income groups had much larger effects on birth outcomes than broader expansions of eligibility to women with higher income levels because of much lower take-up of this entitlement by the latter group. The formula in law requires that for the first 12 months a FERS disability annuitant receive 60 percent of his or her high-3 minus 100 percent of any Social Security disability benefit, and from that point forward to age 62, 40 percent of the high-3 minus 60 percent of any Social Security disability benefit. If no Social Security disability benefit is due, the disability annuitant would receive 60 percent of the high-3 for the first 12 months and 40 percent thereafter. That benefit would be increased by COLAs. At age 62, the disability annuity would be converted to a regular annuity (using the 1.1 percent multiplier) and increased by any cost-of-living increases.. ...

Challenges with Filing a Claim Under the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP). When filing a claim under the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP), what you are really doing is filing a petition with the U.S. Court of Federal Claims (commonly known as the Vaccine Court). While the VICP is designed to make it easier for individuals with vaccine injuries to recover the money they need to cover their medical bills and other losses, the government still has an interest in ensuring that it does not pay invalid claims. As a result, the government will assign experienced attorneys to defend your case. Those attorneys are there to prevent you from receiving compensation unless and until you prove that you are entitled to a financial recovery under the terms of the VICP.. In addition, the Vaccine Court has complex rules in place governing everything from when and how you file your claim to what goes on in proceedings before the Court. If you fail to follow the rules, you ...

Downloadable! Recent theoretical work suggests that means and asset-tested social insurance programs can explain the low savings of lower income households in the U.S. We assess the validity of this hypothesis by investigating the effect of Medicaid, the health insurance program for low income women and children, on savings behavior. We do so using data on asset holdings from the Survey of Income and Program Participation, and on consumption from the Consumer Expenditure Survey, matched to information on the eligibility of each household for Medicaid. Exogenous variation in Medicaid eligibility is provided by the dramatic expansion of this program over the 1984-1993 period. We document that Medicaid eligibility has a sizeable and significant negative effect on wealth holdings; we estimate that in 1993 the Medicaid program lowered wealth holdings by 17.7% among the eligible population. We confirm this finding by showing a strong positive association between Medicaid eligibility and consumption

Updated, May 8, 1:40 p.m.: With the prospect of Medicaid expansion on life support, protesters gathered at the Capitol on Wednesday to urge state leadership to expand coverage to poor adults, and state Democrats announced that theyre still searching for a legislative vehicle to expand coverage. It appears as if we are going to miss an opportunity and that is to the detriment to the people below the poverty level who work and dont have health care, state Rep. Garnet Coleman, D-Houston, said at a news conference held by Democrats, noting that the legislation that would have offered an alternative to Medicaid expansion, House Bill 3791 authored by ...
Im sure everyone thats reading this knows better, but I cant let it go unaddressed.. LePage is absolutely wrong about the costs of Medicaid expansion. And its not free. The people of Maine are already paying for Medicaid expansion right now even if they cant access it. The federal government currently covers 95 percent of the cost of Medicaid expansion and will still cover 90 percent of the cost in 2020 and beyond. Federal taxpayers who live in Maine are already paying for it.. LePage claims Medicaid expansion will cost the state $100 million per year, which is a relatively small number in the grand scheme of things, but hes also wrong about that. The current cost to the state will be roughly half that or around $55 million according to the Maine Office of Fiscal and Program Review (the states version of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office).. We should be clear that LePage is picking a fight with all of his constituents, not just heathen liberals.. I followed the vote live last ...

Since SLE is incurable, treatment is based on drug therapy that will control symptoms and progression of the disease. Kidney failure is a major cause of death and kidney function must be closely monitored.. Therapy for lupus is based on suppressing the immune system. Systemic corticostroid drugs like prednisone can be highly effective, but their use is limited by potential side-effects (e.g., hypertension, obesity, poor wound healing, osteoporosis, osteonecrosis, cataracts). Methotrexate is another immunosuppressive drug that is useful in treating SLE. The anti-malarial drug plaquenil is often capable of keeping SLE under control.. Specific medications may be required for particular problems like hypertension, depression, and skin lesions.. Every case is different. Some people respond rapidly to maintenance therapy with plaquenil and have minimal symptoms. Others are not so fortunate.. Figure 1: Diagram of the bronchial tubes and lungs.. Severity of Asthma Attacks. Asthma attacks can be mild and infrequent, responding to an inhaled bronchodilator. They can also be frequent and severe enough to be life-threatening. A diagnosis of asthma alone does not mean you are entitled to Social Security disability benefits. When properly treated, people with asthma have participated in the Olympics, professional sports, amateur sports, and school-related sports without danger or difficulty.. Treatment for Asthma. For years researchers have studied genetic, environmental, and immunological factors that may play a role in asthma. Despite gaps in knowledge, they have made considerable progress in treatment. Both the inflammation and the bronchial narrowing must be controlled for effective treatment. Patients with chronic asthma who receive inhaled steroids to reduce inflammation along with bronchodilators to relax tight muscles do better than those who receive bronchodilators alone. Many ...

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recently announced that some long-awaited changes to the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) will take effect in 2017. Waking Times. Yet another shocking blow has been delivered to people who still ardently claim that vaccines are safe and effective, and that the only complications they can cause are mild. The US government department for Health Resources and Services Administration has recently released the running tally of the just-past-half-way-complete US Fiscal Year (FY) of 2017 for compensable vaccine injuries. It currently stands at over $142 million dollars. You read that right. That covers the 377 cases that were thus far successful in obtaining compensation in fiscal year 2017 through the heavily biased (to put it politely) system allegedly in place to redress damage done by vaccines in the USA.. At the rate things are going, we might expect the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program to pay out around $220 million or more by the close of FY 2017. To clarify, US Fiscal Year 2017 runs from October 1st, 2016 to September 30th, 2017 - theres still over four months remaining to rack up more ...
Using a seamless, adaptive, phase II/III design, the investigators will determine the safety and efficacy of arimoclomol in patients with SOD1 positive familial ALS. Both stage-1 and stage-2 are randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled in a population of patients with rapidly progressive SOD1 positive familial ALS. Patients with ALS, a history of a relative affected with ALS (i.e. familial ALS) and the presence of a demonstrable mutation in the SOD1 gene that is known to be associated with rapidly progressive disease, will be eligible for inclusion in this study. Potentially eligible subjects will undergo screening via telephone and, if necessary, review of outside medical records. The intervention will continue for up to 12 months. In the event that a participant reaches a study endpoint (e.g. tracheostomy or permanently assisted ventilation) study drug will be terminated. Subjects who meet all eligibility criteria will travel a study site for final eligibility determination, baseline ...

Rulings. Social Security Ruling 96-3p. As explained by Social Security Ruling 96-3p, symptoms, such as pain, will not be found to affect an individuals ability to do basic work activities unless the individual first establishes by objective medical evidence (i.e., signs and laboratory findings) that he or she has a medically determinable physical or mental impairment(s) and that the impairment(s) could reasonably be expected to produce the alleged symptom(s). The finding that an individuals impairment(s) could reasonably be expected to produce the alleged symptom(s) does not involve a determination as to the intensity, persistence, or functionally limiting effects of the symptom(s). However, once the requisite relationship between the medically determinable impairment(s) and the alleged symptom(s) is established, the intensity, persistence, and limiting effects of the symptom(s) must be considered along with the objective medical and other evidence in determining whether the impairment or ...

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes otherwise normal tissue in the body to attack other organ systems. This disease can damage everything from the heart to joints. The four manifestations of lupus are neonatal, drug-induced, discoid and systemic. Of the four, systemic is generally labeled as the most severe.. While the severity of systemic lupus can rise and fall over time, one reason its considered to be the most severe form is because there is no cure. Another reason is because when it flares, its symptoms can make it impossible to work. And since the flares can happen at any time, many lupus sufferers are unable to maintain steady employment.. Because of its severe symptoms and the impact it has on many peoples ability to work, sufferers of this disease may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. In order to receive any financial support, applicants need to meet some specific requirements, as well as provide certain types of evidence.. ...
The Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD) measures fundamental motor skills competency and is frequently used for eligibility determination of adapted physical education services in children with disabilities. The purpose of this study was to determine if the TGMD-3 is clinically sensitive to detect deficits in the fundamental motor skills of children with disabilities (i.e., intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, language and articulation disorders). Eighty-five children with disabilities and 85 matched controls (i.e., typically developing, individually matched on age, sex, ethnicity, and race) completed the TGMD-3. Mann-Whitney U tests identified significant differences in the total TGMD-3 scores for children with intellectual disability (p , .001), autism spectrum disorder (p , .001), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (p = .032). No differences were identified for children with language and articulation disorders. Comparisons ...
