Water chestnut (Trapa natans L.), an annual aquatic plant with floating leaves was first introduced into North America in 1874. Since then, wild populations have quickly become established in many locations within Northeastern USA. Due to its detrimental effects on the overall health of aquatic ecosystems, millions of dollars have been spent to control the water chestnut infestations in the North America through mechanical harvesting and manual removal, with limited success. The potential for continued expansion of the infestations demonstrates an urgent need for an effective control method.. This study examined the potential of ultrasound application as an alternative control strategy for water chestnut management. Various frequencies and amplitudes of ultrasound generated by submerged transducers were applied directly to water chestnuts harvested from Lake Champlain. Substantial damages on water chestnut cells as well as penetrated petitoles were observed at the following tested frequencies of ...
Oligotrophic, phosphorus (P) limited herbaceous wetlands of northern Belize are being impacted by P loading from fertilizer runoff. P enrichment causes a shift in autotroph communities from a microphyte (cyanobacterial mats, CBM) to macrophyte (Eleocharis spp., Typha domingensis) dominated system. To document potential effects of P, salinity, and macrophyte species on the heterotrophic microbial community nutritional status (represented especially by specific phospholipids fatty acids and specific respiration rate), biomass and activities, we took soil samples from established P enrichment plots in replicated marshes of two salinity levels. P addition increased microbial biomass carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and P, as well as soil nutrient transformation rates (nitrogenase activity, N mineralization and immobilization, methanogenesis). The effect of plant species (Eleocharis vs Typha sites) was generally lower than the effect of P addition (CBM vs Eleocharis sites) and was most evident at the low ...

This bizarre horny fruit has two prominent, downcurved horns and superficially resembles the head of a bull. The fruit body has a woody, sculptured surface that resembles a face. To some people, the entire structure resembles a bat. It comes from an Asian aquatic plant often called water caltrop (Trapa bicornis). It is sometimes called water chestnut; however, this not to be confused with the crunchy, tuberous roots of a vegetable called water chestnut (Eleocharis dulcis) commonly served in Chinese restaurants. Other common names for this plant include Chinese horn nut and ling kio or ling chio. It belongs to the water-caltrop family (Trapaceae) and includes the single genus (Trapa) with several closely-related species. The generic name Trapa is derived from calcitrappa, Latin name of the caltrop, in reference to the peculiar, horned fruits. During medieval times, a vicious weapon called a caltrop was used in European warfare. This was an iron device with four points so designed that one ...
This hairy-nosed otter occurs in Southeast Asia from southern Thailand, Cambodia, southern Vietnam and Peninsular Malaysia to Sumatra and Borneo. The species is under constant threat of poaching and possibly extinct in India, Myanmar, and Brunei.[1] In Thailand, it was recorded in the Pru Toa Daeng peat swamp forest and in areas around the Bang Nara river.[6][7][8] It mainly habits lowland flooded forests with climaxing vegetation in three levels: a primary forest zone, a secondary forest zone made up of Melaleuca cajuputi, and a third zone of grasslands. These tiers make the habitat hard to penetrate, providing protection from human disturbance and cover from predators. The Bang Nara river habitat, where communities have been discovered, is tidal. The two reserves in Vietnam are both peat swamp forests, surrounded by 15m high Melaleuca cajuputi, covered in dense lianas such as Stenochlaena palustris in its primary zone, and a second zone of meadows made up of Eleocharis dulcis. These two ...

As part of the effort to understand the community structure of bacteria and archaea in groundwater fed wetlands, the vertical distribution of plant root density and species presence was studied in correlation with the change in associated bacterial and archaeal communities. Three sampling sites at a local groundwater fed wetland were selected based on surface plant community structure: Site 1 was dominated by Carex stricta, site 2 was dominated by Eleocharis erythropoda, and site 3 was dominated by a 50/50 mix of C. stricta and E. erythropoda. Core samples at 4 depths down to 1.2 m were taken to collect data on soil moisture, root density, organic matter content, plant species presence, bacteria taxa presence, and quantification of bacteria taxa. DNA sequences were used to identify plants, bacteria, and archaea. Between 13,000 - 25,000 bacterial and archaeal species are estimated to be present at each depth, with the greatest diversity found in the upper layers. Species estimates were positively
SCIRPUS JUNCOIDES Roxb.. Family: Cyperaceae. Synonym: Scirpus erectus Poir. An erect annual weed, 20-70 cm high. Seeds germinate at 13-14 °C but it cannot germinate under dryland conditions. Water chestnut (Trapa natans) is a highly invasive aquatic plant, native to Europe, Asia, and Africa, and was introduced to North America in the late 1800s. This annual floating plant has green, glossy, triangular leaves, with stems that can grow up to 16 feet in length. Water chestnut produces a black nut with sharp spines, which contains a fleshy seed that forms a white flower in mid-summer. Water chestnut can be found in the northeastern United States, where it invades ponds, lakes, and rivers. It forms dense, floating mats that clog the water in shallow areas and along shorelines. It also limits light and reduces oxygen levels for plants and animals that live in the water column. This non-native, invasive plant competes with native vegetation, is of little value to wildlife, and impacts recreational activities such as boating, fishing and swimming.. One water chestnut seed can produce up to 15 rosettes and each rosette can produce just as many seeds, with the potential to generate 200 or ...

The chestnut is not a nut but the corm of an aquatic grass-like plant grown on paddy fields, marshes, or edges of rivers. A corm is a bulb-looking underground storage organ of a plant to ensure the survival of the plant in times of harsher conditions. You can be assured of all the goodness of the plant has to offer is in the corm.. Water chestnut has a thin layer of black skin which needs to be peel or slice away. The fresh is white, crunchy, juicy with an earthy nutty taste. You can pop the peeled corm into your mouth immediately after rinsing or put aside for other culinary uses. It is best to rinse the water chestnut before and after skin removal to remove dirt. It is mildly sweet eaten raw.. Water Chestnut is high in starchy carbohydrates, rich in vitamin B+ and minerals especially manganese and potassium. Westerners most likely have their first encounter with water chestnut in Chinese restaurant chap suey dish. You can easily incorporate them in your salad, juice, dessert immediately. Try ...

Acid Sulfate Soils (ASS) are a naturally occurring soil type found throughout the world along the coastal plains. When these soils are disturbed and exposed to air, oxidation occurs and when mixed with water sulphuric acid is produced.. For every one tonne of sulfidic material that completely oxidises, approximately 1.6 tonnes of sulphuric acid can be produced, dependant upon the amount of oxidisable sulphur present. This acid will reduce soil productivity, may require expensive lime to be added, and can drain into waterways to cause short and long term social, economic and environmental impacts. This acid can dissolve the concrete from around bridges, or within pipes, and can leach and concentrate elements, such as aluminium, from the soil to toxic levels.. ...

Due to the pandemic, the Jonah Center has not organized large work parties. We have encouraged paddlers to go out solo or in small family groups. Bring a large plastic bag, gently pull up plants by the roots, place them in the bag, and deposit the plants near the informational kiosk in the boat launch parking area.. If you are able to pull more plants than you can carry, please place them on one of the floating drying rafts anchored in the area. The plants will drain, dry out in the sun, lose most of their weight and volume, and become easier for others to bring back to the launch site by motor boat. We will ask the Public Works Department to dispose of them when plants have accumulated. Please contact us if you have gone out to remove plants and let us know what you have found in terms of location and number of plants. We will all do the best that we can.. ...

High antioxidants level in food is gradually becoming popular because of the enhanced risk of oxidative stress in humans. Bread wheat is rich in vital antioxidants but its major bioactive compounds are not available for the human. This study was conducted with the aim to enhance the phytochemical constituents and antioxidative activity of wheat grains by fermenting it with the use of Bacillus subtilis KCTC 13241. The antioxidative potential was determined by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl- hydrazyl) and ABTS (3-ethyl-benzothiazo- line-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging assay as well by the concentration of amino acids, flavonoids, minerals, carbohydrates, and phenolic compounds. Different varieties showed different free radical scavenging potential on fermentation, which was significantly high with respect to their corresponding unfermented wheat varieties. The highest potential was found in a fermented wheat variety named Namhae and this combination can be used in the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Several hundred years ago, a philanthropic Chinese gentleman had left his fortune to provide, in perpetuity, a free ferry across the river, which at Hangchow is a mile and a half wide. For three hundred years, sails and oars were the motive power, or long poling bamboos stuck in the mud and pressed against the naked bellies of sweating, chanty-singing coolies who leaned against them until they seemed almost on all fours as they forced the heavy junks through the water. The ferryboat was never started till every last inch of vacant space had been occupied by countrymen with loaded carrying-poles bringing produce to the city market - bamboo shoots, yams, peas, beans, chestnuts, water chestnuts, water nuts, the edible bulrush, and chickens - or returning carrying the precious two-bucket uncovered load of night-soil, which is the chief fertilizer on all Chinese farms ...

The earliest extant Chinese dietary text is a chapter of Sun Simiaos Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold (千金方; Qiānjīn fāng), which was completed in the 650s during the Tang dynasty.[10] Suns work contains the earliest known use of the term food (or dietary) therapy (shiliao).[1] Sun stated that he wanted to present current knowledge about food so that people would first turn to food rather than drugs when suffering from an ailment.[11] His chapter contains 154 entries divided into four sections - on fruits, vegetables, cereals, and meat - in which Sun explains the properties of individual foodstuffs with concepts borrowed from the Yellow Emperors Inner Canon: qi, the viscera, and vital essence (精; jīng), as well as correspondences between the Five Phases, the five flavors (sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty), and the five grains.[12] He also set a large number of dietary interdictions (食禁; shíjìn), some based on calendrical notions (no water chestnuts in the 7th ...

The mouth of a sea lamprey, a parasitic fish that New York State spends $500,000 a year to control. Credit James L. Amos/National Geographic, via Getty Images While the state is at the epicenter of the problem, there are hot spots, including other parts of the East Coast, California and Texas. Sitting at the intersection of so many streams of commerce, New York has had to innovate under the pressures of invasive species. In 2009 it introduced a novel law forbidding the transporting of any firewood more than 50 miles from its source to prevent the spread of disease. (The oak at Green-Wood Cemetery, Mr. Charap believes, was probably infected by firewood improperly brought to the city.). Inside a laboratory at Cornell University, tiny, nut-brown Galerucella birmanica beetles from China are kept under quarantine as their appetite for water chestnut is tested. An invasive aquatic species most likely introduced to New York in the 1880s, the water chestnut continues to clog the states fresh waterways. ...

Chicken lettuce wraps are very popular menu items at restaurants. However, an appetizer portion can have more than 600 calories, as well as a lot of saturated fat. But you can make your own at home for a fraction of the price and much healthier to boot.. Most chicken lettuce wrap recipes call for sautéing finely chopped veggies, like celery, pepper, onion, ginger and garlic, in a pan, then adding ground chicken to be browned. Ingredients like water chestnuts, vinegar, cilantro and soy sauce also add to its signature taste -- check recipes for particular combinations of ingredients.. ...
Root vegetables have sustained mankind through millennia of winters, because they last for long periods in cool temperatures. Root vegetables are plant roots eaten as vegetables. I went to my first-ever grown-up Friendsgiving potluck yesterday. Gosh, do I love friends (good friends, really good friends) and food (good food, really good food). Id never had legit green bean casserole, so I adapted this recipe, slightly. I used organic condensed cream of mushroom soup and used milk to thin it out, no water chestnuts, and no bacon bits. I crushed the fried onion to a state slightly larger than a breadcrumb. Still crunchy, but no big chunks. Also made a slightly adapted version of this Parmesan Garlic monkey bread. I cooked them in two (disposable) pie plates and lowered the cook temp to 350. And I made these pumpkin cookies with maple cream cheese frosting. I used milk instead of the greek yogurt called for in the frosting, because I didnt have greek yogurt, but I did have milk. Gross story, I actually did have greek yogurt...I checked the expiration date and it expired in July. I looked on the inside, because sometimes yogurt is really resilient. This time, it was not, ...
