Methodological advances in on-chip technology enable high-throughput drug screening, such as droplet-array sandwiching technology. Droplet-array sandwiching technology involves upper and lower substrates with a droplet-array designed for a one-step process. This technology is, however, limited to batch manipulation of the droplet-array. Here, we propose a method for selective control of individual droplets, which allows different conditions for individual droplet pairs. Electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) technology is introduced to control the height of the droplets so that the contact between droplet-pairs can be individually controlled. Circular patterns 4 mm in diameter composed of electrodes for EWOD and hydrophilic-hydrophobic patterns for droplet formation 4 μl in volume were developed. We demonstrate the selective control of the droplet height by EWOD for an applied voltage up to 160 V and selective control of the contact and transport of substances. We present an architectural design and optimization methodology for performing biochemical reactions using two-dimensional electrowetting arrays. We define a set of basic microfluidic operations and leverage electronic design automation principles for system partitioning, resource allocation, and operation scheduling. Fluidic operations are carried out by properly configuring a set of grid points. While concurrency is desirable to minimize processing time, the size of the two-dimensional array limits the number of concurrent operations of any type. Furthermore, functional dependencies between the operations also limit concurrency. We use integer linear programming to minimize the processing time by automatically extracting parallelism from a biochemical assay. As a case study, we apply our optimization method to the polymerase chain reaction.

The quality of indoor air is of increasing concern because it is closely related to human health. An air handling unit (AHU) can be used to control the quality of indoor air with respect to particulate matter and CO2, as well as providing air conditioning by regulating the temperature and the humidity. Electrostatic precipitators have high collection efficiencies and low pressure drops. However, their chargers can generate ozone, which is a drawback of applying them to indoor air control. In this study, we compared four discharging electrodes: a 50-µm tungsten wire, a 100-µm tungsten wire, 16-µm aluminum (Al) foil, and carbon fabric composed of 5-10-µm fibers. The carbon-fabric electrode exhibited superior particle collection efficiency and lower ozone generation for a given power consumption compared to the 50- and 100-µm tungsten wires, or the Al foil electrode. This low-ozone-generating, micro-sized electrode can be applied as an electrostatic precipitator in AHUs for indoor air control.

ABSTRACT Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are widely used to eliminate particulate matter emissions from industrial sources. However, the complex electrohydrodynamics (EHD) flow in ESPs can cause controversial conclusions on particle collection. This paper established an ESP model with an additional source term added to the equation of gas momentum conservation. Correlations between particle motion behaviors and EHD flow characteristics were investigated regarding various discharge voltage, particle size, and electrode position. Results show that the EHD flow presented a back-and-forth distribution between the electrode and plate. The peak value of vy can be as high as 0.15 m s-1. The EHD flow can cause four possible types of particle motion status. The dominant factor for particle motion switched between the electric force and drag force along with the particle motion trajectory. There existed an escaping window at the ESP inlet. Most aerosols fall under the category of normal electrical resistivity. The accomplishments in the study of the failure mechanisms in metal thin film resistors is presented. The films studied were of the same type employed by several of the major manufacturers of thin film resistive networks. Experiments were carried out to identify the principal physical mechanisms contributing to the degradation of these devices. Chief among these were homogenization of the film composition, stress relief, and ion migration. A computer analysis of manufacturers test data was carried out to determine the nature of the behavior function. The computer was also used to derive from experimental data, an empirical expression for the test resistors as a function of environment, deposition parameters, and time. A 2nd order RF bandpass filter based on the active inductor has been implemented in a 0.35 μm CMOS process.
