Reversible deformation is a unique property of elastic materials. Here, we design and fabricate highly stretchable multilayered films by patterning Y-shaped motifs through films of non- elastic materials, e.g. plastics, metals, ceramics. By adjusting the geometry and density of the motif, as well as the thickness of the film(s), the effective spring constant of the engineered film(s) can be tuned. Three-dimensional bending of the patterned film(s) enables macroscopic stretchability and minimizes local film strain fields. The engineered films demonstrate no preferential direction of stretching and the proposed design is versatile. Furthermore our approach is compatible with thin-film processing. We demonstrate the Y-shaped motifs allow for the design of stretchable plastic foils coated with metallic and metal oxide conductors. We anticipate the patterned motifs can be scaled down to offer a wider range of elastic electronic materials to use in stretchable electronics and to create soft bioelectronics. (c

An apparatus for measuring kinematic errors in power transmission mechanisms with an input shaft and an output shaft. The apparatus comprises a pair of laser doppler velocimeters (LDVs) (16,34). Each generates a laser beam split into two equal-intensity parallel beams which are projected so as to strike a shaft while the shaft rotates. The shaft produces reflected beams having a frequency which is shifted from that of the incident beams, thereby producing returning beams which are heterodyne. A measuring (20,38) channel is in communication with each LDV. An attenuator (24) is in communication with one of the measuring channels (20) for decreasing the amplitude of a signal generated by the measuring channel (20). A summing and integrating amplifier (28) is connected to the attenuator, the amplifier generating a signal indicative of kinematic error in the gear mechanism.

Purpose: : To determine the feasibility of the surgical procedure and to collect some safety data regarding the bioelectronics of a novel micro drug pump for intravitreal drug delivery in a Beagle dog model for up to 1 year. Methods: : Thirteen Beagle dogs were assigned to two groups. The experimental group (n = 11) underwent pars plana implantation of MicroPump; the body of which was sutured episclerally, while its catheter was secured at a pars plana sclerotomy. The control group (n = 2) underwent sham surgeries in the form of a temporary suturing of the MicroPump, including placement of the pars plana tube. Baseline and follow-up exams included ophthalmic examination and imaging.
