Many novel applications in bioelectronics rely on the interaction between biomolecules and electronically conducting substrates. However, crucial knowledge about the relation between electronic transport via peptides and their amino-acid composition is still absent.. We have systematically investigated the electronic transport properties via several homo-peptides as a function of their structural properties and temperature. The junctions were also characterized in-situ by state of the art inelastic electron tunnelling spectroscopy (IETS). The conduction through the peptide depends on its length and secondary structure, as well as on the nature of the constituent amino acid and charge of its residue. We support our experimental observations with high-level electronic structure calculations and suggest off-resonance tunnelling as the dominant conduction mechanism via extended peptides. Our findings indicate that both peptide composition and structure can affect the efficiency of electronic ...

Rinku and colleagues have recently published in Biosensors and Bioelectronics their work on porous silicon based optical biosensor for insulin detection in islet cell culture.. A label-free porous silicon (pSi) based, optical biosensor, using both an antibody and aptamer bioreceptor motif has been developed for the detection of insulin. Two parallel biosensors were designed and optimised independently, based on each bioreceptor. Both bioreceptors were covalently attached to a thermally hydrosilylated pSi surface though amide coupling, with unreacted surface area rendered stable and low fouling by incorporation of PEG moieties. The insulin detection ability of each biosensor was determined using interferometric reflectance spectroscopy, using a range of different media both with and without serum. Sensing performance was compared in terms of response value, response time and limit of detection (LOD) for each platform. In order to demonstrate the capability of the best performing biosensor to ...

Blood pressure, measured with a blood pressure cuff and stethoscope by a nurse or other health care provider, is the force of the blood pushing against the artery walls. Each time the heart beats, it pumps blood into the arteries, resulting in the highest blood pressure as the heart contracts. One cannot take his or her own blood pressure unless an electronic blood pressure monitoring device is used. Electronic blood pressure monitors may also measure the heart rate, or pulse.. Two numbers are recorded when measuring blood pressure. The higher number, or systolic pressure, refers to the pressure inside the artery when the heart contracts and pumps blood through the body. The lower number, or diastolic pressure, refers to the pressure inside the artery when the heart is at rest and is filling with blood. Both the systolic and diastolic pressures are recorded as mm Hg (millimeters of mercury). This recording represents how high the mercury column in an old-fashioned manual blood pressure device ...

Associative memories and processors differ significantly from the serial memories that dominate modern computing technologies. These memories mimic the function of the human brain, in which associative recall is used to search through the entire memory bank simultaneously to match an input data block [93,94]. In application, the memory would return the corresponding data block that matches the input criteria, or would return the closest match if no exact copy is identified. Because of this functional paradigm, associative processors are often considered a target design for the development of true artificial intelligence [95]. Fourier-transform holographic optical loops, which were first proposed by Paek and Psaltis, have long been considered an optimal architecture necessary to realize the implementation of this memory class [84,96-98]. Bunkin et al. [80] had first proposed thin films of BR as a viable medium for the technology owing to the inherent holographic and photochromic properties of the ...

Reversible deformation is a unique property of elastic materials. Here, we design and fabricate highly stretchable multilayered films by patterning Y-shaped motifs through films of non- elastic materials, e.g. plastics, metals, ceramics. By adjusting the geometry and density of the motif, as well as the thickness of the film(s), the effective spring constant of the engineered film(s) can be tuned. Three-dimensional bending of the patterned film(s) enables macroscopic stretchability and minimizes local film strain fields. The engineered films demonstrate no preferential direction of stretching and the proposed design is versatile. Furthermore our approach is compatible with thin-film processing. We demonstrate the Y-shaped motifs allow for the design of stretchable plastic foils coated with metallic and metal oxide conductors. We anticipate the patterned motifs can be scaled down to offer a wider range of elastic electronic materials to use in stretchable electronics and to create soft bioelectronics. (c

In one of the most sensational TED talks, neuroscientist David Eagleman-who researches perception and brain plasticity-explains the limitations of our perception. In his words, we are constrained by our biology, and his research aims to expand our world beyond these constraints and open up new dimensions that are out there.. To unstick us from our limited subjective world, Eagleman and his colleagues devised a wearable device with an interface that runs on cell phones and tablets.. The first device, a sensory vest, gives humans new senses and makes them aware of things previously undetected. The vest translates sound into a pattern of vibrations the human brain can learn how to interpret. Tests on deaf people showed that, over time, people start understanding the language of the vest and hearing the world around them.. Another wearable device that advanced medicine is a temporary tattoo that can be used to monitor a patient. Todd Coleman is a bioelectronics innovator who gave a TEDMED talk ...

An apparatus for measuring kinematic errors in power transmission mechanisms with an input shaft and an output shaft. The apparatus comprises a pair of laser doppler velocimeters (LDVs) (16,34). Each generates a laser beam split into two equal-intensity parallel beams which are projected so as to strike a shaft while the shaft rotates. The shaft produces reflected beams having a frequency which is shifted from that of the incident beams, thereby producing returning beams which are heterodyne. A measuring (20,38) channel is in communication with each LDV. An attenuator (24) is in communication with one of the measuring channels (20) for decreasing the amplitude of a signal generated by the measuring channel (20). A summing and integrating amplifier (28) is connected to the attenuator, the amplifier generating a signal indicative of kinematic error in the gear mechanism.

Photoelectron emission microscopy combined with intense photon sources is becoming a powerful analytical tool with both spatial resolution down to a few nanometers and spectroscopic capabilities. One can laterally resolve surface domains according to their magnetization, chemical composition, electronic structure, and even follow the dynamics of domain movement, catalysis or laser emissions using time resolved detection systems. The lateral resolution varies from 1 mm to 10 nm, placing this technique at the heart of the mesoscopic physics, and corresponds to the need for spectroscopic information on the intermediate scale between atomic and macroscopic, so lacking in multiscale modeling. Furthermore, the possibility of studying nanostructured materials and objects on the 100 nm scale corresponds perfectly to the technologically interesting length scale in electronics, bioelectronics. CEA has acquired the first production model of the NanoESCA (OMICRON GmbH), a spectromicroscope designed for high

A very important strategy in biotech is investing at the right time and in the right companies. One segment of the biotech sector that could be ripe for investment is electroceuticals/bioelectronics, which are medical devices that use electrical, electromagnetic, mechanical or light stimulation to affect electrical signaling in tissues.. A prime example of the kind of gains that can be realized in this segment of the sector is Pulse Biosciences (PLSE), which has seen its share price nearly quadruple since February on news that healthcare executives and entrepreneurs Robert Duggan and Dr. Maky Zanganeh had acquired a combined interest of 17.1% and the recent submission by the company of its FDA 510(k) application for its PulseTx™ System. PLSEs technology, Nano-Pulse Stimulation (NPS) uses nano second electric pulses to illicit an immune response for the treatment of cancer.. Another biotech that seems to be following the same trajectory as PLSE is Endonovo Therapeutics (ENDV), which uses Time ...

It has been established that charge transport is possible in DNA, but for a useful device, one wants to be able to turn the charge transport on and off. We achieved this goal by chemically modifying DNA, said Tao, who directs the Biodesign Center for Bioelectronics and Biosensors and is a professor in the Fulton Schools of Engineering. Not only that, but we can also adapt the modified DNA as a probe to measure reactions at the single-molecule level. This provides a unique way for studying important reactions implicated in disease, or photosynthesis reactions for novel renewable energy applications.. Engineers often think of electricity like water, and the research teams new DNA switch acts to control the flow of electrons on and off, just like water coming out of a faucet.. Previously, Taos research group had made several discoveries to understand and manipulate DNA to more finely tune the flow of electricity through it. They found they could make DNA behave in different ways - and could ...
