This study investigated the potential for use of electronic noses (e-noses) for early rapid detection and differentiation of bread spoilage before visible signs of growth occur. After 24 h incubation at 25°C it was possible to distinguish Penicillium verrucosum, Aspergillus ochraceus, and Pichia anomala from 3 different species of filamentous fungi before visible growth was observed on unmodified wheat agar using a conducting polymer based e-nose (BH114). Discrimination of controls was possible after 48 h. The BH114 e-nose was able to differentiate between Pseudomonas fragi, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and P. verrucosum growing on 0.97 aw modified flour-based media after only 24 h. Novel gas sensors embroidered into fabric substrates based on polymers/ SWNT-COOH nanocomposites were proposed in this paper, aiming for their use as a wearable electronic nose (e-nose). The fabric-based chemical gas sensors were fabricated by two main processes: drop coating and embroidery. Four potential polymers (PVC, cumene-PSMA, PSE and PVP)/functionalized-SWCNT sensing materials were deposited onto interdigitated electrodes previously prepared by embroidering conductive thread on a fabric substrate to make an optimal set of sensors. After preliminary trials of the obtained sensors, it was found that the sensors yielded a electrical resistance in the region of a few kilo-Ohms. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of aging time on the development of the aroma characteristics of beer. Volatiles produced from Sleeman Cream Ale during aging for up to 28 days at -1 C were sampled periodically and monitored by a trained sensory panel, by headspace analysis with an electronic nose (EN), and by solid phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. All three types of analyses discriminated between groups of samples taken early, in the middle, and at the end of the aging periods and separated aged beer into two or three distinct clusters. Intertrial differences were observed and were attributed to production variations. The balance of sweet and bitter notes was optimum at 14 and 21 days of aging. In addition, the EN was able to distinguish finished beer made after different periods of aging, while the sensory panel was not. This study evaluated two electronic nose systems (conducting polymer and surface acoustic wave-based) to differentiate volatiles of grapes and wines treated with an aqueous ethanol spray (5% v/v) at veraison. Ethanol spray induced fruit ethylene production immediately post-treatment, which then declined progressively. Electronic nose evaluations of grape volatiles were compared with Cabernet franc and Merlot physicochemistry, and with wine GC and aroma sensory data. Canonical discriminant and principal component analysis found that both electronic nose systems and the physicochemical measures (Brix, TA, pH, color intensity and hue, total phenols, glycosides, and berry weight) were able to discriminate between ethanol-treated and untreated grapes and wines for both cultivars. An electronic nose (e-nose), the Cyrano Sciences Cyranose 320, comprising an array of thirty-two polymer carbon black composite sensors has been used to identify six species of bacteria responsible for eye infections when present at a range of concentrations in saline solutions. Readings were taken from the headspace of the samples by manually introducing the portable e-nose system into a sterile glass containing a fixed volume of bacteria in suspension. Gathered data were a very complex mixture of different chemical compounds. Linear Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method was able to classify four classes of bacteria out of six classes though in reality other two classes were not better evident from PCA analysis and we got 74% classification accuracy from PCA. In this paper, we prove that the portable and compact self-developed E-Nose, based on thin film semiconductor (SnO2) sensors and trained with an approach that uses deep Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network, can perform early detection of wine spoilage thresholds in routine tasks of wine quality control. We investigated whether profiles of exhaled biomarkers (breathprints) measured by electronic noses (eNoses) are associated with loss of control/exacerbation after ICS withdrawal.. Methods. 23 patients (6 male; 28±10 yr) with moderate to severe persistent asthma on ICS (≥500 µg fluticasone) were included.
