In a prospective study of 70 unselected patients with chronic liver disease, clinical signs of a peripheral neuropathy were observed in 13 patients. Abnormal nerve conduction was demonstrated in nine of these and in one further patient who had no abnormal neurological signs. The occurrence of a neuropathy (in patients with cryptogenic cirrhosis, haemochromatosis, active chronic hepatitis as well as in alcoholic cirrhosis) could not be related to liver function, although it was associated with higher IgA and IgM values. Clinical diabetes was present in six of the 14 patients with neuropathy but there was no relation in the non-diabetic patients between neuropathy and minor impairment of carbohydrate tolerance. Those with neuropathy had a significantly higher incidence of oesophageal varices and there was also a relationship to a history of previous encephalopathy. Im a 40 year old female - started having numbness/tingling in hand first of June. Moved into arm over few weeks. Saw GP, who referred me to neurologist. By the time I saw him, I was having a numb spot in back on outside edge of left shoulder blade. Numbness there is only when I have my arm forward - like washing dishes or right now - typing on computer. He did the nerve conduction tests. Showed some issue with C5/C6 nerve roots so had me do an MRI of cervical spine. Didnt show anything (I have braces - and the C1/C2 cross views werent clear, but otherwise, everything looked OK). He then recommended that I try steriod shots in my neck - I was hesitant but he told me there are 5-10% of patients whos issues dont show on an MRI and that the shots were diagnostic as well as provide relief ...if they work. $1K later, no relief. Went back to neurologist who said only thing he would recommend now is trying Lyrica. After looking up side effects AND not knowing the real problem, decided against that. ...

Introduction: Multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) is a rare, treatable, immune-mediated neuropathy often associated with multifocal conduction block (CB). The hallmark electrodiagnostic feature is the presence of CB occurring at non-entrapment sites. However, MMN without CB has also been described and can be diagnosed, even in the absence of CB. Therefore, it is crucial to diagnose and identify MMN cases without CB, as it is a treatable disorder. Case presentation: We present a case with progressive symptoms of asymmetric distal upper and lower extremity weakness with no sensory deficits. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy was initiated, as the patient fulfilled the criteria for probable MMN, despite the absence of CB. I have been dealing with pain in my feet for several years which has gotten progressively worse. The past 6 months or so have been so bad that 3 months ago my doctor prescribed Gabapentin which helped significantly for a brief few weeks, but I am at the highest levels now and there is a new pain in my right ankle that will just not go away. I am weaning off of the Gabapentin so that I can try Lyrica. I am being scheduled for a nerve conduction test to try and determine what is wrong exactly. I am not diabetic. I believe it is from too many years of standing/walking on concrete (Im a caterer/chef) without proper foot support. My doctor seems to support this opinion, she does not seem to have any answers. Just had blood work done, I am in excellent health otherwise! Am so worried that Ill be unable to continue working. Pain is relentless.
