Each year the majority of our students are applying to medical school: allopathic (MD), osteopathic (DO) and/or MD/PhD programs. Every applicant to medical school needs to complete the MCAT. The MCAT, offered January-September, is a computerized test that provides a mechanism for medical schools to assess all applicants on a single criterion. This is an important part of your credentials. The MCAT requires extensive preparation, and should only be taken after all the basic science courses are completed. The test is arduous, and students should begin preparing for this exam months in advance. While many students prepare successfully on their own, commercial test preparation services are easily available to Penn students.. Detailed information about the test can be found on the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) website.. In addition to reviewing medical school admission websites, the following professional resources are very valuable when it comes time to navigate medical school ...

Yesterday I was visiting with a young woman who was home for the holidays from pharmacy school in Port au Prince. She and I had become friends 10 years ago or so working together in the childrens church outreach. She had been in the capital during the earthquake last year and returned to try to continue her studies. She has been rejected by her father but little by little, with the help of various people has managed to finish high school and is now attending professional school. What encouraged me the most about our visit was how she was telling me she had learned how important it was to share whatever she had. Whenever she has any extra change, shell buy some candy or bread and share it with neighborhood kids just to encourage them. She is a part of a generation of young Haitians who have embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ and is applying it in real ways in her life. Her generation will be the ones who inherit this nation. She reminds me of another young student from years ago. When he was ...

My guess is its a liability issue for the summer program. I answered yes to the same question for a summer program some 15 years ago out of honesty - and regret it to this day. I was 17, dealing with depression, had meds and a therapist, still quite high achieving and successful and all that other stuff. It was a paper application and I detailed under the yes by saying the issue was under control and under the treatment of a physician. Prior to being accepted I had to go through rounds of intrusive questions from slews of people, ranging all the way up to the director of the program. The directors also then insisted on separate and additional conversations and documentation from teachers, employers, supervisors, etc. In the end, I was permitted to attend the program, but the humiliation and trauma I went through in the process leading up to it is still clear in my mind. Never have I checked a yes in those boxes since. There absolutely is discrimination in the world and mental illness ...

Making sure you have developed an informed understanding of the health profession you seek to enter is an important aspect of the career exploration process. Ideally, your understanding is based on extensive and meaningful clinical experience in a healthcare setting such as shadowing medical professionals, volunteering with patients, or employment in a healthcare field. In addition to confirming your interest in the field, health professions schools are interested in students who have demonstrated compassion and empathy through volunteer activities. Cooperation, organization, self-discipline, tolerance, increased empathy and confidence are just a few of the areas where students will benefit from volunteering. Most health programs will value a long period of involvement with depth over a breadth of experiences.. ...

We started an enrichment Saturday class last fall for our son. Yes, we had to have him tested to get in, yes the classes are a bit pricey. On the other hand, our son really likes it and will always pick it as his favorite activity. We got a really nice comment card on our son after the first session. The second session though was good, also had his weakness listed (fine motor). I appreciated the honesty and found it balanced with the positive. ...

She was in McMinnville, on the clock at her other day job, the job she has dedicated the last 30 years of her life to as the director of a program that inspires and supports at-risk youth. A job that requires her to pack up her Portland life every summer and move down to Linfield Colleges campus (to eat, sleep, and live in the college dorms) for her Summer Program. When we were younger, my sister and I were allowed to move with her. We would all wave and kiss our Dad, four cats, and one dog goodbye, pile into the car, and head to wine country to live with my mom, 8 college-age counselors, and 60 high school kids. Once we got older and our summer schedules no longer permitted 8 week stays, Mom was forced to make the trek by herself, a task shes been diligently taking on alone for the past 30 years ...

We used the GPS for the first time on a Friday in July, as Bud wrapped up his first week in his Extended School Year summer program. As we drove, following the encouraging electronic voice of our new auto-navigating friend as she pointed us in all the right directions, I thought about how nice it would be to have a GPS for parenting. I imagined myself punching in the destination "outburst managed effectively" and waiting mere seconds for the instrument to calculate my route to success. How nice it would be to move forward with the assurance that if I made a parenting misstep, a gentle voice would instantly redirect me: "When possible, make a legal U-turn ...
